Although Noemi Gonzalez has been on plenty of auditions, there was something different about the casting call for Y&R to play Rey’s estranged wife, Mia. “This one was unique in the way that it was a same-day audition,” says the actress. “I had three or four hours to prepare, then run to CBS. Luckily, the scene was short and the material really clicked with me. I was drawn to the role and I was drawn to the show immediately. It was to me a wonderful experi-ence to do it this way where it was ‘All right, get going, make it happen!’ ” After the meeting, Gonzalez “felt wonderful about it. As soon as I was done, the casting director had her arms in the air like a victory, like I had nailed it. I asked if she needed any-thing else from me and she said no, but I have had that experi-ence before and nothing comes from it. However, the next day I was called back for a chemis-try read. I think that the hands in the air was a great sign!”The next step was reading with Sharon Case (Sharon) and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey). “Sharon was just a sweet-heart; I felt her welcoming energy,” Gonzalez recalls.

“With Jordi, I asked if he was willing for me to be affectionate with him and potentially kiss him, so I had to ask more of Jordi and he was game the whole time. He’s a very giving partner.”Finding out that she won the role was the best medicine. “It was a Saturday and I was nursing a migraine,” Gonzalez sighs. “At 11 a.m. I got a phone call and my rep said, ‘What did you do at the test?!’ I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ I was so worried, and they said, ‘No, you booked it!’ I got up from my bed and my migraine was gone! And then two minutes later, production was calling me to pick up my scripts!”There was no time to cel-ebrate, the actress reports. “I had to be ready by Tuesday and I had a good amount

what they’re wearing...wh ere they’re going...what they’re doing

n If you’ve noticed

a change in the

clothes that Laura

Wright’s Carly has

been gravitating

toward on GH, that’s

by design, reports

Wardrobe Director

Shawn Reeves. “For

quite a while, we had

gotten into this really

tight area of look

with her, which was

a little on the severe

side, and dark col-

ors. Black skirts

and tops, and her

dresses were those

little, fitted blacks

and grays and blues.

I just kind of needed

to sort of break her

out of that sort of

look. I was getting

bored with it, too, so

I thought, ‘You know

what? I’m just going

to start trying differ-

ent things. I’m going

to start trying red

dresses, I’m going to

start trying different

styles.’ I got some maxi dresses for her

because she’s tall and beautiful. So, I

got that Michael Kors, navy maxi dress

that goes all the way down to the floor

and has, I think, silver snaps all the

way up the front, which is really kind of

different for her. Just not quite so tight,

lighter colors, some slightly different

fabrics, so it’s just kind of breaking

her out of that severe look that we had

going for a while.”

What item is currently on

your must-have list? “A

very spe-

cific pair of

white, leath-

er, high-top

Converse

sneakers.”

What’s the last great pur-

chase you made? “I found

the perfect, vintage Kurt

Cobain T-shirt, complete

with real-life holes and

ultra-thin fabric from

being worn so much. It

cost 50 cents at Goodwill.

Cha-ching!”

What trend are you

incorporating into your

wardrobe? “I’m really

digging long, flowy, old-

school dresses with unique

patterns.”

What new prod-

uct are you using

that you love?

“Hallelujah Serum

by Bare Naked

Botanicals. Vegan

and cruelty-free.”

How do you pamper your-

self? “Yoga, painting my

nails, and buying fancy cof-

fee — and a cookie.”

What’s your go-to drugstore

buy? “Cheap nail polish or

swanky bar soap.”

Whose style inspires you?

“Lauren Koslow [Kate].”

What’s your favorite thing in your closet? “I

have three dresses my grandmother used to wear

when she was young, and a red leather jacket

from the ’80s that’s perfectly funky in every

way, complete with shoulder pads. Don’t judge.”

HOW

TO GET

responsible for the fabulousp f f

soaps share their inside secrets.HAIRAccording to Hairstylist Anzhela

Adzhiyan, “She has really curly hair,

so her hair has to be kind of wet in

order for me to get this look. So, we

start with it damp, and I put a little

bit of Paul Mitchell Smoothing Super

Skinny Serum onto her hair, which is

GENERAL HOSPITAL

good for someone with wavy, curly hair. When

you put it on before you blow-dry it straight, it

helps the hair look smoother. Then, I blow-dry

it with a round brush, section by section, giving

it some volume but also straightening the hair.

Once it’s dry, I use a dime-sized amount of

Aveda Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss. After

that product is in, I might touch it up a little bit

with a flat iron, just pieces here and there. I use

a little Paul Mitchell Dry Wax to put down her

flyaways. To give it a light hold, I might use a

little bit of the Sebastian Shaper Hairspray.”

MAKEUP

Makeup Artist Angela Ackley notes, “Carly

was grieving for Morgan, so this was a very

simple makeup. I used a Chantecaille founda-

tion and then Bye Bye undereye concealer by

IT Cosmetics. We did a little cream shadow,

M.A.C Bisque, on her eyelids, and a little bit

of Tarte’s Sweetheart, a mauve color, in her

crease. She likes a very thin black line just

on top of her lashes. For that, I used M.A.C

Fluidline eyeliner in Blacktrack. For her cheeks, I

used a cream stick from NARS [The Multiple] in

Portofino. I filled in her eyebrows with a M.A.C

crayon called Lingering. On her lips, she’s just

wearing balm, but when she adds a little bit of

gloss, it’s usually Brown Sugar by Stila.”

WARDROBE

Shawn Reeves, GH’s wardrobe director,

details, “Ms. Carly is in that beautiful red. The

fabrics are a mix; the front, with the drape,

is a jersey, and the sleeves are leather. It’s

by Bagatelle and I believe I got it at Neiman

Marcus. The skirt is Theory and her tank top is

BCBG. Her shoes are Kate Spade pumps. Her

stud earrings come from JCPenney.”

Animal Attraction: French bulldogs George and Gracie

How did the puppies come into your home? “We’ve always had four kids and four dogs. When we lost our pugs, we started getting the French bulldogs and then we had Rosie and Ruby. Ruby is now 9 ½ and we lost Rosie so quickly last year. She had cancer really bad. We figured we needed to get Ruby a friend. So we looked at some puppies and we bit the bullet to go through the puppy training all at one time. So, the puppies are from different litters but they’re only three weeks apart. They’re best of friends for life now and they have a good time at home.”How did Ruby react? “Ruby’s good with it but she was like, ‘Are you kidding me? What are you doing? I thought we had a thing going on here. You and me, we go on walks together! It was all about me!’ So she still looks at me like, ‘Oh, what hap-pened?’ But the thing is the puppies keep

“They’re the best of friends for life,” says Hogestyn of George (l.) and Gracie.

themselves occupied because their energy level is that of a puppy and Ruby’s older, but they think Ruby’s mom and they try nurs-ing with her and Ruby loves them. George kneads on her back and she has a cowlick right in the middle of her back that sticks up and he sucks on it. His paws are splitting out and he’s pumping each like he’s nursing. I was reading about that and it’s the way they bond — it’s a sign of comfort — and Ruby’s fine with it. It’s kind of like sucking your thumb.”How did you decide on the names? “I think it started with [daughters] Whitney and Alex. They are just all over the royals and the babies and stuff. So George is for [William and Kate’s son] and I think Gracie’s from Princess Grace. They wanted to go with the royals and I said, ‘I can go with it, George and Gracie,’ and they go, ‘No, it’s just George and Grace.’ I said, ‘Well, you don’t know about George [Burns] and [wife] Gracie.’ ”

What are their personalities like?“French bulldogs come in a lot of different styles. Gracie has long legs and a perfectly proportioned body and not a lot of folds in the face. She runs like the wind and jumps

and has just so much energy. I was out doing some work on the patio and they were up on the hillside and they came running down and jumped over the retaining wall and hit the ground and George is running toward me and Gracie is just tracking him and does the police maneuver where she clips his back-end, like how you spin the car around? It just sent him sailing on the patio. He could prob-ably do some damage to her if he wanted to and he doesn’t. But with his body type, he looks like a cougar when he’s stalking her.”Will you teach them tricks? “I’m start-ing to do the training individually and that’s a fun process. Of course they rebel, but you get them to sit and stay and wait to jump up, and obey your commands. Start with the simple things first and then we move on to the tricks.”

“Face to face or back to back, they are inseparable,” says Hogestyn of

his pups.

“Here’s George with his ‘cigar’. ”

I’m sure you know that old say-ing, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” In my family,

neither does the apple pie. It’s defi-nitely one of our favorites. I have many versions of this dessert in my culinary repertoire, but this clas-sic, old-school style is the one that brings me back to my childhood. It reminds me of the ladies who came before me: my grandmother, my mother and my favorite aunt, who all shared their baking secrets with me. Now that I’m a mom, I’m look-ing forward to passing these secrets on to the apple of my eye, my daughter, Jemma. Until then, I’m happily sharing with all of you for your family’s Thanksgiving holi-day. I hope you have as many things to be grateful for this year as I do.

PASTRY DOUGH FOR A 2-CRUST PIE

Make sure to keep your butter and shortening very cold from the refrigerator. It’s the secret to a flaky

crust!

2½ cups sifted all-purpose flour

1 tsp. salt

½ cup cold butter, cut into ½-inch cubes

½ cup cold vegetable shortening, cut into

roughly ½ inch cubes

4-5 Tbsp. ice water

• In large bowl, mix flour and salt.

• Add cold butter and shortening cubes to flour

mixture and pinch cubes with your fingertips until

mixture forms clumps about the size of tiny peas

(clumps will be uneven).

• Quickly sprinkle ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time,

over all of the flour mixture, tossing lightly with a

spoon until you can form the dough into a ball.

(Don’t overwork dough.)

• Flatten the ball into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and

let rest refrigerated for at least 30 minutes.

• Remove pie disk from refrigerator and let sit at

room temperature for 10 minutes just to soften a bit.

• Cut disk in half. Dust surface and rolling pin lightly

with flour and roll one half into an 11-inch circle

of about 1/8 inch thickness.Close up any cracks by

pinching them together and smoothing out gently

with the rolling pin.

• Gently fit dough into the bottom of a pie plate and

crimp edges with your fingers. Cover up any holes

or cracks at this time. (A little water can be used to

help with cracks just by dipping your finger in the

water and gently pinching the dough back together.)

• Repeat rolling process for top crust and bake as

directed.

CINNAMON SAUCE

1½ Tbsp. cornstarch

1 Tbsp. water

1½ cups apple juice

½ cup brown sugar

1½ tsp. cinnamon

½ tsp. salt

• While pie is baking, dissolve cornstarch in

water and stir until smooth. Set aside.

• In a small saucepan, stir apple juice,

brown sugar, cinnamon and salt until

dissolved and bring to a low boil.

• Add cornstarch mixture and whisk at high

heat until sauce comes to a boil. Sauce

will thicken a bit.

• Remove from heat. Serve warm. (When

reheating, you can thin sauce with a little

apple juice or water if needed.)

pie plate and dot with butter.

• Roll out remaining pastry dough,

place on top of apples and crimp

edges. Make several slits near the

center for steam vents while baking.

• Sprinkle top of pie with 1 tablespoon

of sugar and bake for about 45-50

minutes until crust is golden brown

and juices start to bubble in the

center of the pie.

• Cool partially on a wire rack and

serve warm or serve at room

temperature.

• Drizzle warm cinnamon sauce on top

with a side of vanilla ice cream.
