O n the 13th,14th,15th of April 2011 we had an induction programme

for our newly appointed employees. Mrs Miya-Human Resource Practitioner was the Programme director, she welcomed everyone to the programme and thanked them for attending . Basically an induction programme is a way of welcoming new staff in our institu-tion, making them feel at home. Also giv-ing them clarity about all the departments that we have and what they do. An induc-tion programme helps an individual to know exactly what is expected from him / her to do (duties). There were lot of activities included during the programme which helped the new em-ployees to relax and calm themselves be-cause some of them were scared to even talk , but thanks to Mrs S Miya with her magic words and some extra activities for late comers, at the end everyone felt at home.

New employees listening attentively to the induction programme.

T here was also another Induc-tion Programme that took

place on the 25th and 26th of May which is called a Public Service In-duction Programme which was held at Amatikulu PHC Training centre. This programme enables the newly appointed employees to be aware of all the policies of the Department. It gives clarity in so many things e.g. the structures of government & Code of conduct Batho Pele principles were also dis-cussed in the programme. It was a very fruitful programme indeed be-cause it also teaches you more on how a Public Service Servant must treat his / her internal and external customers.

H CT was introduced in order to in-crease the number of people who

are testing for HIV. Sometimes people can’t afford to go to Hospital due to financial prob-lems, so as Montebello Hospital we try by all means to take the services to them. The HCT Campaign enables everybody to get access to the services of the Hospital since it is indicated in the Batho Pele Princi-ples that everybody must get access to the services of the Government which they enti-tled to. . HCT Campaign was conducted on the 12th of April 2011 at Mahlubi Secondary School.

I’M JUST A NURSE I REACH OUT & TOUCH YOUR HAND,TO HEAL YOUR BODY & CURE YOUR SOUL

A n estimated amount of 90 learners were counselled for HIV/AIDS but they were not tested. School Health team provided other services such as BP Screening, eye testing, HIV Test-ing, Diabetic testing, Blood pressure screening, Condom dispensing, TB screening and Nutri-tional advise. The teachers too did some tests for BP, Eye testing and Diabetic testing.

I t has been discovered that there are still communities that are facing a huge chal-

lenge when it comes to accessing services, more especially health services. Most people have to travel long distances when visiting health institutions ( mobile points, clinics and hospitals). Some of them end up not going to the health institution as they do not have money. On the 9th of April 2011, Ilembe District Office felt that something should be done in order to assist those in need of care. A Khanya Africa outreach programme was taken to Nsuze/Gcwensa Primary School, where healthcare workers were providing services to the commu-nity of Nsuze. Different services were performed on the day. Amongst those were :-TB Screen-ings, cervical cancer screenings, Eye tests, HCT as well as minor ailments. The programme was not going to be a success it wasn't for KwaDukuza Clinic , Sundumbili CHC & iLembe District staff who volunteered their services on the day. It was indeed a suc-cessful campaign as 163 people visited the site.

BP screening in progress

ACCESS Department will have to set targets for extending access to public services. They should implement special pro-grammes for improved services deliv-ery to physically , society and cultural disadvantage persons

WE ARE TAKING THE SERVICES TO OUR COMMUNITY

S ending a child with diabetes to school can be a nerve wracking experience for both parent and child but with planning, preparation and education , your child can quite easily and safely integrate into the school environment. The following is a handy guide to give to your child’s teacher. Parents should set up meeting with the school and prospective teachers in advance. Many of the problems faced by children with diabetes in school could be alleviated if the school personnel were adequately trained and equipped. Effective diabetes management at school can:

• Promote a healthy, productive learning environment for students with diabetes. • Reduce absences of students with diabetes. • Reduce classroom disruption. • Help assure effective response in case of diabetes-related emergency. • Promote full participation in all areas of school curriculum and extra-curricular activi-

ties.

Parents should be prepared to provide education material to the school and perform basic diabe-tes education covering:

1. General information on diabetes. 2. Why blood glucose control is important. 3. Provide a diabetes care plan including:

• Testing times, target blood glucose ranges • What to do if glucose levels are high or low • Insulin schedule • A meal plan • Emergency contact number • A full stocked hypo kit

There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be managed. Careful attention to a management plan can reduce the occurrence of short term complications such as high and low blood glucose, and in the long term it can delay or prevent the devastating long term complications such as kidney failure, blindness, amputation and premature heart disease and stroke. The key to good diabetes control is a careful balance between food, exercise , and insulin. It’s a juggling act to keep blood glucose levels within the target range. In a nutshell , food makes blood glucose level to go up, and exercise and insulin makes the blood glucose levels to down. People with diabetes have to check their blood glucose levels throughout the day using a blood glucose meter. The meter tells them how much sugar (glucose) is in their blood at that time, and they take insulin ,eat or modify activity to try to stay within their target range. School Bill of Rights for Children with Diabetes 1. Do blood glucose check up 2. Treat hypoglycaemia with emergency sugar 3. Inject insulin when necessary 4. Eat lunch at an appropriate time and have enough time to finish the meal 5. Have free and unrestricted access to water and the bathroom 6. Allow the child to miss school for doctor’s appointments to monitor diabetes without nega-

tive consequences 7. Participate fully in physical education and other extracurricular activities , including field

trips.

W hen you are tired of sneezing , clearing your throat, and blowing your nose, you may reach for an allergy medicine to tame your symp-toms. But did you know that taking some allergy medicine is risky especially if you have diabetes or high blood pressure?

Preventing allergies Although its extremely difficult to avoid allergies altogether, it’s a good idea to go for an allergy test to see what you are most allergic to. • Keep your home as dust-free as possible and vacuum

every day, especially if you have pets. • Wash pillows and linen at least once a week. • Don’t use pillows filled with feathers. • Keep away from foods that you know you are allergic

to. Always read the labels on food. • Avoid fresh flowers in your home if you are allergic to

pollen. • Stay away form trees and flowers which are covered in

pollen and producing flowers.

S ince Montebello Chronic Sick Home (MCSH) caters for about 105 residents

with large variety of conditions ranging form cere-bral palsy, hemiplegia, arthritis, epilepsy & mental retardation. MCS aims to provide holistic care i.e. spiritual, emotional & physical care to the resi-dents of the home. The home provides daily meals, clothes , assistive devices ( wheelchairs, buggy's, walking sticks), medical care as well as assistance with daily routines. On the 08th of June 2011, our rehab team along with the rehab team from iLembe District paid a visit to the Paediatric Ward & Adult Ward. Their aim for this day was to do an In-service training in positioning during feeding, dysphagia, sensory, speech, language stimulation , passive stretches to prevent contractures , and pressure sores. They also wanted to change wheelchairs for those that have old unsafe wheelchairs and walking sticks.

They also wanted to identify patients that will benefit form individual therapy from the already existing support group and refer them accord-ingly. To also identify new patience that have been missed in the wards and book them for the support group. They also provided hearing screening for all adult patients and referred them accordingly. It was a successful day indeed.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will When the road you are traveling seems all up hill When funds are low and debts are high And when you want to smile, but you just cry When care is pressing you down Rest! If you must; but don’t you quit Life is a queer with its twists & turns And may a failure turn down When he might have won, had he stuck it out? Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow You might succeed with another blow Success is failure turned inside out The silver tint of the clouds of doubts And you may never tell how close you are, It may be near when its seems far So stick to the fight when you are a hardest hit When things seems worst, you mustn’t quit.

DON’T GIVE UP

OUR ATTITUDE DEFINES LIFE Life is best for those who want to live it Life is difficult for those who want to ana-lyze it Life is worst for those who want to criticize it OUR ATTITUDE DEFINES LIFE Enjoy your life, Laugh so hard that even sorrow smiles at you Live life so well that even death loves to see you alive FIGHT SO HARD THAT EVEN FATE ACCEPTS ITS DEFEAT.

Issue 9, Volume 5 APRIL TO JUNE

O n the 7th ,8th,9th of June 2011,Communications Department con-

ducted a Batho Pele in-service training for staff. The purpose of the training was to revitalize the Batho Pele principles in a workplace. It has been discovered that in many instances people tend to get bored when they hear about Batho Pele principles and others only learn about it when going for interviews. Some of the other findings reveals that people regard Batho Pele as an add on to their duties but not as part of their day-to-day duties. Staff members from all categories of staff were divided into 3 groups, so as to accommodate almost everyone. Sessions were presented in both English and IsiZulu. Staff were encouraged to give the best service to the people that they would like to get from any other government departments. As Public servants we need to know that we serve different types of people. We do not need discriminate people ,we need to serve them with pride and smile regardless of their race, gender and disability etc. The communities we serve believe in our government, and they always expect excellent service when visiting our institutions. It is vital that we take care of them as most of them rely on the ser-vices we offer. As employees , we all need to practice these principles and adhere to them.

Patient’s Rights were also tacked on this presentation. It was emphasized that we should respect patient’s rights as we all know that even our constitution states that every South African citizen has rights. It was also stressed that rights go hand in hand with responsibilities as some of the other patients are abusing their rights and not considering their well-being of their lives So, patients need to be given clarity about their rights and responsibilities so as to know what is expected of them.

Sekunjalo 2011! Its another year for our stu-dents who are currently studying Matric in 2011. Every year the department of health offers the opportunity to our communities around iLembe District for students who are interested on Health faculties to go and study at University for their desired courses. We as Montebello Hospital have decided to go all the way out to reach our students on our area by marketing our very own district training needs. We have arranged with our fellow col-leagues or clinical staff to come with the HR team to the nearest school to advice the grade 12 students on what to do when applying us-ing the CAO, also about the requirements that they need to have when applying for these

courses. We brought along the follow-ing staff: Physiotherapist, Pharmacist, Professional nurse, Speech therapist and a Radiographer. They explained everything to the stu-dents about the careers that they want to pursue and the students were so much interested. We have advised them to apply for the courses through the CAO and they should collect the bursary forms from their nearest Health institu-

tions. The main purpose for the Department is to reach out to all those students who cannot afford to pay tertiary fees and to straighten the Department service delivery by recruiting the theses young stars to get the best careers and to support their institu-tions & communities and the same time fulfilling their dreams of becoming doctors.

M y name is Nondumiso Nzuza, I’m 23 years of age, all the way from Maphumulo. I

graduated with a Diploma in Public Relations in 2009 at Durban Computer College and my Major subjects were Public Relations & Communications Science. The first day they told me that I'm going to be placed at Montebello hospital, I cried because it was far away from home and God had just blessed me with a child, The time I had about the news, he was turning one month, and I had to live him behind but as time went by I got used to seeing him on weekends only. It was really sad living him behind but I realised that this is where god wanted me to make a difference. God placed me to Montebello for a reason, now I feel at home.

T o Department of Health, thank you for giving me the opportu-

nity to gain my experience at Montebello and thanks to Montebello for welcoming me with warm hands . I'm sure for the 12 month that I’ll be here, I will do my best. Ms TF Ngubane keep up the good work and thank you for making me feel at home. For the past few months that I’ve been in this Department you’ve taught me many things. Now I can face any challenges and overcome them, now I also know what is really expected from us to do as a Communications Depart-ment. Last but not least, lets us care for our patients and treat them the way we would want our families to be treated. Lets us serve our community with re-spect and know that without them, we are nothing. Until Next time....owakaManzuza umtwana ayixabene….till next time.

I am, Sthembile S Mkhize. I was born on the 28th of August 1985. I started schooling at Montebello Primary and completed my com-pleted my matric in 2003 at Sacred Heart Sec-ondary. I did my tertiary education at Durban University of Technology. I am currently doing my internship at Monte-bello Hospital as a Supply Chain Management Officer-Intern.. I am so grateful and I thank the almighty for being so good to me. To iLembe District , Dept. of Health & Montebello Hospi-tal : Thank you for giving us this opportunity. To Montebello Hospital Staff & My Supervisor: Thank you all for welcoming us and for helping us through hard times ... Ngiyazibongela...

I'm all the way from Ndwedwe. I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce at University Of South Africa in 2009. I would like to thank the Department for giving this opportunity. Its very hard to get employment these especially if you don't have any experience like most of us who just graduated. I’m really enjoying my internship programme and the people that I’m working with welcomed me with open hands. They always try by all means to guide me in everything that I do. Sengazi ngisho uBAS lo okuhlezi kukhulunywa ngawo... Let us work together and help our community.
