On October 1, 1919, the Mormon church of Salt Lake City unveiled a monument to a bird. Mormon settlers were tending their ripening crops in 1848 when a plague of crickets descended, threatening to ruin the harvest. Fortunately, fl ocks of seagulls arrived, eating all the crickets. The Seagull Monument, designed by Brigham Young’s grandson, is thought to be the world’s only monument to a bird. The seagull is now the state bird of Utah. SEAGULLS (cont’d)• Seagulls have been seen stamping their feet in unison

to imitate rainfall to trick earthworms to come to the surface.

• Gulls are able to drink both fresh and salt water. Most animals are unable to do this, but gulls have a pair of glands above their eyes designed to fl ush the salt from their systems through openings in the bill. This makes it possible for them to spend days at sea without returning to land for fresh water. Given a choice, seagulls prefer fresh water over salt water because processing the salt is an energy-intensive process.

• Adults of many gull species have prominent spots on their bill that serve as visual cues to youngsters. In order to induce adults to regurgitate food, nestlings peck this spot.

• They have a small claw halfway up their lower leg that makes it easy for them to sit on high ledges without getting blown off.

• Gulls nearly went extinct on the East Coast when they were hunted for their feathers.

• Many species of gulls are ‘klepto-parisitic’ meaning that they steal their food from other birds to feed themselves, often using simple intimidation tactics which cause other birds to abandon their meal.

• Seagulls have excellent vision, even better than human’s. They are one of the few birds with eyes that can move in their sockets.

• Gulls often drop clams or other hard-shelled mollusks onto hard rock surfaces to break them open. Researchers found that gulls instinctively know the exact height required to drop a clam so it breaks open. Otherwise, they are wasting energy.

• The most common seagull species is the ring-billed gull, one of the most abundant species across North America. The population is estimated at 3-4 million. (more on next page)

• In a gull colony, when one gull sounds the alarm, the entire fl ock will take to the safety of the skies. However, some gulls are more skittish than others and frequently sound the alarm when it’s not necessary. Observers report that the alarm calls of the jitteriest gulls are routinely ignored by the rest of the colony, just like the boy who cried wolf.

• One ornithologist noted that gulls can be cannibalistic at times, feeding not only on the young of other species of gull, but also occasionally eating their own offspring. The researcher further noted that cannibalism inevitably increased every single Sunday. Why? Because one of their main food sources came from following fi shing trawlers on the ocean. None of the trawlers went out on Sundays because they were all at church.

• A scientist who was capturing and banding gulls was frequently bombarded by angry mobs of the birds who resented the intrusion. Other people could walk through the colony without arousing any attention from the birds, but whenever he set foot near them, they would gang up on him. He tried disguising himself by wearing different clothing and wigs, but they always recognized him. Finally he donned a mask, and the problem was solved. He concluded they recognized him by his facial features.

• Almost half of the bird/plane collisions in the U.S. are due to gulls. Eisenhower was aboard Air Force One when it lost an engine due to a gull being sucked into the engine.

• Orca whales at the Vancouver Aquarium learned that they could train seagulls to come take bits of fi sh out of their mouths.

• Seagulls in Cambridge, Maryland, habitually bombed cars with oyster shells after a parking lot was built over their nesting ground.

SEAGULL FACTS & FASCINATION• A company golf driving range was opened for

employees of Smith and Wesson in Springfi eld, Massachusetts, in 1984. It had to close in short order when fl ocks of seagulls mistook the white golf balls for

Understanding Your Cat – Part 1

To many people cats are a mystery because they are like no other domestic animal. People train dogs, people train horses, people train other people but cats train people. It is amazing how cats in a household tend to control the social environment and teach others to serve them. Cats do not respond to negatives. Understanding your cat will enhance the human/feline bond.

The domestic cat is social and they form matriarchal groups in their territory. Households with a few cats differ from groups of outdoor barn cats and still larger differences exist from large feral colonies of cats. Population pressures affect each group. Household cats (1-5 in number) are social but interaction with humans many times causes a lot of stress and the physical environment can create many behavioral issues. Barn cats have the best of both worlds – to be free in a protected area, to hunt, to have free choice food, to have human interaction if they want it and to have a territory of their own – noting the risk from other predators. A good barn cat has a pleasurable job for life. Feral cats whether free living or in colonies continue to give us insights into pure feline social behavior. Mothers and daughters in a colony develop kitten rearing duties teaching cat hygiene, hunting, and social interaction. Surrounding the matriarchal core are related males, befriended unrelated males from outside the colony but rarely is an unrelated female ever accepted in the family group. Housing unrelated females in a household can be diffi cult, whereas neutered males tend to socialize much better.

Social groups can be as little as a one cat group. Three cats in a household could have 3 social groups of one cat each, 2 social groups of a one cat group and 2 cats in the other group. Cats in the same group tend to interact together well – sleeping together, playing together, communicating together (meows, chirps, body posturing and eye language) and grooming each other. Groups have a common characteristic in that grooming amongst cats usually defi nes members of that group.

edible clams. The gulls picked up the balls and dropped them from heights, bombarding executives, motorists, and innocent bystanders with falling golf balls.

• When an estimated 7,000 seagulls took up residence at the Monmouth County landfill in New Jersey, officials decided to drive them away by using trained falcons to hunt them. The entire flock of seagulls subsequently vacated the landfill, and moved into a local neighborhood. They roosted on rooftops and bombarded the vicinity with poop, often hitting pedestrians. The falcons were removed from the landfill after officials decided it was best to have 7,000 seagulls pooping in a landfill than pooping in a subdivision.

Plant pansies, mums and more

Trees turning color remind us that the time has come to refurbish patio and porch containers with the bright colors of fall. And that goes for bed areas too.

Now that we're enjoying our patios into the fall longer than ever, we need seasonal color that outlives the petunias. The welcome container on the front porch also needs to be in tune with the season.

For many plants, the cool nights and warm days this time of year are ideal growing conditions. Planting perennials now in bed areas still gives them time to settle in before winter without having to endure the hot days of summer.

Why pansies?Pansies and their smaller cousins - violas - are standbys for fall fl owers and for good reason. They are hardy enough to bloom throughout the fall and even during the winter in some locations. Best yet, they'll be back early next sea-son with bright spring color.

There's never a boring moment with pansies. Combine black and orange pansies for Halloween - or orange and blue for the Bronco season. Pansies in traditional orange, rust and yellow can also be mixed with other plants.

Perennials that popOther great fall bloomers are asters and mums. Find your favorite colors ranging from lavender and purple to soft and brilliant yellow to rust and bronze. Most asters and mums are perennials that you can plant this fall and enjoy for years to come.

Perennials are a great addition to fall containers. Plant them along with annuals such as dianthus or snapdragons. Other good perennials include sedum, ivy, plumbago, dianthus, yarrow, grasses and Helen's fl ower.

Don't leave out leaves!Add foliage in fall combinations. Foliage adds drama when included with fl owers because of the deep shades and texture that make them distinctive. Add ornamental kale, sedum, coral bells and ornamental grasses into containers and beds alike. Their deep hues, shapes and textures will backstop fl owering plants and make their color pop.

Build upon holiday themes There are many creative ways to add Halloween and Thanksgiving interest to fall containers and beds. Look for: • pumpkin shaped containers • plastic witches' cauldrons • buckets and barrels • copper or other metal containers with a weathered patina. Take advantage of the colorful fall season to enjoy outdoor ambiance, plants and gardening a few weeks more.

Back to School Mouthguards ??

Q. What is a Mouthguard?A. A mouthguard is a fl exible appliance worn in athletic and recreational activities to protect teeth from injuryQ. Why should I wear a mouthguard? A. Why NOT? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, “A mouthguard can prevent serious injuries such as broken teeth, jaw fractures, cerebral hemorrhage and neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw gets jammed into the upper jaw. Mouthguards are eff ective in moving soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances. They may also reduce the severity and incidence of concussions”. A mouthguard can protect and conserve “what’s in your wallet” too.

Q. Are “Back to School Mouthguards” important? Really important?A. Yes! Kids will be heading back to school very soon, and many will end up in various

contact sports. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF), every year there are 15 million dental injuries and 5 million teeth are lost to injuries. According to the American Dental Association, mouthguards help prevent over 200,000 high-school and college athletes from getting these injuries.

Statistics from the NYSSF indicate that losing a single tooth can cost $10,000 to $20,000 over one’s lifetime to replace and restore that tooth!

Q. Why don’t more students wear a mouthguard? A. Students may decide not to wear a mouthguard for a number of reasons: Not all schools

Require wearing a mouthguard while participating in contact sports. Some that don’t fi t properly, or are too big, can impair breathing (or feel like it). Cost may be a

factor. Some kids just may “forget” to put their mouthguard in.

Athletes that wear properly fi tted mouthguards typically fi nd them to be comfortable, resistant to tearing, and durable. One study showed that a custom-made “double layered” mouthguard “off ers double defenses; the extra layers did not reduce comfort or wearability. These double layered materials are what the pros wear. Even the least expensive mouthguard is better than none. It’s true that some protect better than others, but most types help prevent injuries to the teeth, lips, cheek, and tongue.

Physical Therapy and Alzheimerʼs Disease byRosette Subia

Can a person with Alzheimerʼs Disease benefi t from physical therapy when they deal with memory loss, confusion and diffi culty following commands?

The answer is YES! Physical therapy can be benefi cial with the use of specifi c teaching methods and tech-niques. For example: (William Staples andMoveFor-wardPT.com)- Visual, verbal and tactile cueing: This technique uses pointing to objects or gesturing with short, simple one-step instruction.- Mirroring: The therapist stands directly in front of the person showing them how to move.- Task breakdown: Involves breaking down the task into short, simple ʻpiecesʼ to be completed separately.- Chaining: Is the linking of one step to the next step in the more complicated movement.- Hand over hand facilitation: The therapist takes the hand or other body part of the person who needs to move or complete a task and moves that body part through the motion.Physical therapy and other rehabilitative services have much to offer persons with Alzheimerʼs Disease to improve function, manage daily activities, reduce car-egiver stress and enhance the quality of life for all.

RECEIVE A FREE INITIAL CONSULTAn elderly couple, who had just learned how to send text messages were on their mobile phones. The wife was a romantic type and the husband was more of a no-nonsense guy.

One afternoon the wife went out to meet a friend for coffee.

She decided to send her husband a romantic text message and she wrote:

"If you are sleeping, send me your dreams. If you are laughing, send me your smile. If you are eat-ing, send me a bite. If you are drinking, send me a sip. If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you."

The husband texted back to her:

"I'm on the toilet. Please advise."

Sixteen Logical Reasons Why Some Men Have Dogs And Not Wives:

1. The later you are, the more Excited your dog is to see you.

2. Dogs don't notice if you call them By another dog's name.

3. Dogs like it if you leave things on the fl oor.

4. Dogs' parents never visit.

5. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.

6. You never have to wait for a dog; they're ready to go, instantly, 24 hours a day.

7. Dogs fi nd you interesting when you're mad.

8. Dogs like to go hunting and fi shing.

9. Dogs won't wake you up at night to ask: "If I died, would you get another dog?"

10. If a dog has babies, you can put an ad in the paper and sell them.

11. When you drop a silent one, they enjoy the aroma and don't run around frantically with room spray.

12. Dogs will let you put a studded collar on, with-out calling you a pervert.

13. If a dog smells another dog on you, it won't kick you; it just fi nds it interesting.

And last, but notleast:

16. If a dog runs off and leaves you, it won't take half your stuff.

To verify these statements: Lock your wife and your dog in the garage for an hour.

Then open the door, and observe who's happy to see you!
