A visit from All Black Rudi Wulf

Principal Les Gribben and the Staff of OtamateaChristian School were thrilled to welcome back cur-rent All Black Rudi Wulf.Rudi first visited the school in 2004 when he was amember of NZ Colts and the North Harbour Squad, and returned last year.Rudi spoke to the children of his journey to becomingan All Black. He used the jerseys he has acquired toillustrate milestones on his journey. These includedjerseys from the NZ Colts, North Harbour, NZ Sev-ens; NZ under 21s the Auckland Blues and finallythe coveted All Black jersey this year.Perhaps even more remarkable is Wulfs comebackfrom injury. In 2005, on the eve of his departure toplay in his 3rdColts World Cup match in Argentina,he broke his neck after diving into the shallow end of

a swimming pool after training. There was doubt whether he might walk again, letalone play rugby. Wulf was in a halo brace for threemonths, completely immobilized and in a neck bracefor a further three months. What followed could bedescribed as nothing short of miraculous.By 2006 he was playing club rugby, was selected forNorth Harbour again and played so well he made theAuckland Blues for 2007. He puts his recovery downto the support of family and friends, prayer and acontinuing faith in God. He spoke to the childrenabout making your dream a reality. Never give up

Achieve your goal, set a new one and work evenharder to achieve it. Find out what your passion isand do what ever you have to do to achieve it.Wulf also talked about the thrill of hearing his nameannounced on the radio as a new All Black, perform-ing the haka, and achieving a goal he had onlydreamed of playing rugby with his heroes. He alsoadded that it was necessary for the children to payattention to their lessons, to listen to their teachers,to become good citizens and be the best you possi-bly can be. This, he said, was important for himselfas his rugby would not last forever.

Wulf spent time signing autographs and having hisphoto taken with various children in the jerseys span-ning his career. It was amazing the number of female students andstaff! who wanted to have their photos taken withone of N. Zs latest All Black!Following the Christian School visit, Wulf visitedOatamatea High School, Maungaturoto PrimarySchool, Maungaturoto Nursing Home and two sickrugby fans in the district.

Wulf was brought to Maungaturoto by local residentPaddy Hallissey whose daughter Kate attends theschool. Hallissey met Wulf when he was teaching atRosmini College in Takapuna, Auckland and man-

aged the 1st XV Rugby and 1st XIII Rugby Leagueteams Wulf was playing in."He was an incredibly disciplined and focused youngman even back then, Hallissey said "and is truly afine example of someone who has made their dreama reality. His comeback from injury was a miracle initself. We have maintained contact over the years,

and watched his progress. The family is thrilled hehas finally achieved his goal of the coveted black jer-sey."

Otamatea Day Camp - coming up soon

Quick!Get your red marker pen out and mark these dateson your 2009 calendar..Wednesday 15thto Friday 17thApril. These are thedates for Otamatea Day Camp 2009.Yes, we the committee have set the dates and put somewheels in motion. I can hear some of you asking, What onearth is Day Camp? Well, if you are aged six-12 yearsold, love having fun in the outdoors, singing and campfires, watching a drama unfold and building huts in the bush, meeting 130 other kids and learning new skills, then youllprobably want to put those dates on your adults calendar, because youll get to do all those things and more at DayCamp.Day Camp is run over the days above. The children arriveat a secret (but not too secret) paddock down StationRoad, Paparoa to find a huge marquee and a bunch of en-thusiastic adults and teen leaders waiting to take themthrough a day filled with all the above activities plus more, until 4pm. Then buses arrive to bring them home to you. This happens for three days until the adults are ready todrop and the kids are still buzzing. This wraps up with aBBQ tea for you and the kids on the Friday evening. This is the condensed version and a taste of what we willbegin telling you in full closer to the time. This event is run by the churches of Maungaturoto,Paparoa and Ararua. If you cant wait and want to knowmore, you can contact Ruth Rosser on 431 8491, JanineSheppard on 431 7196 or Debbie Blythen on 431 6892.
