FLEXIBLE WIRING CONFIGURATIONSThe JM Series can accomodate up to 4 door stations and 8 master stations in a single system. The units wire using Cat-5e cable,allowing or easy installation into new or retroft projects. The wiring or this new system uses the traditional Aiphone KBWIRE (1pr)method rom master door station with a maximum distance o 100m door master. HD BASE-T | WHAT IS IT AND WILL IT REPLACE HDMI?By Mike Swann

What is it?

HD Base-T is a standard, just like HDMI is a standard. Also, like HDMI, HD Base-T came aboutdue to some o the biggest CE players (LG, Samsung, Sony) getting together with a chipmanuacturer (Valens Semiconductors). Their goal was to build a transmission method that

covers as many AV requirements as possible through traditional data cabling (Ethernet). Datacabling was seen as the ideal choice as it can enable [like HDMI] the transmission o loadso data, but being a balanced cable, it would also permit large transmission distances. It hasbecome the deacto standard or IP networks and these are everywhere! Our phone systems,security systems and even our homes have their own IP networks. The idea o leveraging o anexisting inrastructure makes a lot o sense!

Will it replace HDMI?

Whether it will eventually replace HDMI is yet to be seen. Size restrictions and costs have meantthat there are limited examples o equipment with HD Base-T in-built. Having said that, thebalun market is rie with dierent brands incorporating VS chipsets within their baluns*. Futuregenerations o chipsets will need to get much smaller and inexpensive!

*I know that it's technically incorrect to say 'balun'. It's also technically incorrect to say RJ45connector (should be 8P8C). The real question is, who cares?!

So what are these chipsets?To date, this alliance has came up with the VS100 chipset, the Lite VS010 and a CCTV solutionthat is aimed at the IP CCTV Camera market. We'll concentrate on the frst chipset, the VS100.

Under the PRO2 brand, we've been building products that incorporate the Valens chip (VS100)since early 2010. Since then, we have been building and incorporating more and more eatures.The latest and greatest in the HD Base-T industry (i.e. rom Valens) is called 5PlayTM. 5PlayTM inmy view* covers the ollowing things:

Uncompressed HDMI (10.2GBPS)Power over Ethernet (max 100W POE)100Base-T Ethernet (10/100M)Control via USB, IR or RS232100mt transmission

5PlayTM represents what I'd consider, the maximum the current Valens chip has to oer. What

you actually want will depend upon what you actually need.

To explain, let's consider every point individually.

Uncompressed HDMI (10.2GBPS)

HDMI High Speed is tested to a minimum bandwidth o 10.2GBPS. What we actually useis normally signifcantly less, so why worry? We want to uture proo or things like higherresolutions (4K x 2K), higher rame rates or gaming, 3D and whatever's next!

Power over Ethernet (max 100W POE)

For a CCTV camera that draws say 50W, POE is great. One cable run to the remote location.Who cares i the electrician has a power point, the HD Base-T product will supply enough poweror the camera. One day, remotely powering a TV will be possible.

100Base-T Ethernet (10/100M)

Installers would say that Ethernet ports are like torches. You can always do with another one.With smart TVs requiring a por t, you'll see this eature creeping into PRO2 products in the uture.

Control via USB, IR or RS232

AV installers look or these control interaces in order to integrate product within control systemslike AMX, Push, Creston, RTI and Control4. Having a separate IR remote or every box looksunproessional, so we're also looking to include control eatures.

100m transmission

The transmission distances are the same as network cable, though you'll also start to see HDBase-T Lite (VS010 chipset) with a transmitting distance o 50m (Cat6 70m). The Lite versionoers 2 advantages over the ull chipset. It's much smaller and less expensive. Okay, it deliversless power and can't do Ethernet, but or most common problems, it might prove to be a bettersolution.

* My view o 5PlayTM and Valens view o 5PlayTM dier. Valens mentions 1). Video & Audio 2).100Base-T Ethernet 3). Power over cable 4). Various control signals 5). The technology.

From PRO2, we'll continue to support the HDMIC6PRO, with the essential eatures, longcable distances and uncompressed signal (VS100 chipset). Next, the HDMIC6PRO will beaccompanied by a smaller and cheaper HDMIC6Lite, with stripped down eatures and shortertransmission distances. Later in 2013, we'd expect that the HDMIC6PRO will be updated toinclude Power over Ethernet, 100Base-T Ethernet out and a control port or signal.

Currently we are also testing HD Base-T matrix solutions. While the chipset doesn't supportmatrix solutions, additional transmitter chipsets can be used. For example, to allow a daisychained signal, you can place an additional transmitter on the receiver board, allowing daisychaining. I you have a special project, we'd encourage you to discuss it with us!

HDMI OVER IP | WILL THIS BE THE FUTURE OF AV NETWORKING?

The HDMIIP was launched in May 2010, delivering our frst networkable HDMI solution. Wecould deliver HDMI over large distances, switch, matrix and even control IR without almost anycompression o the HDMI signal.

At the centre o the HDMIIPLR is an Aspeed processor. Aspeed rom Taiwan has specialised indesktop virtualization and PC / AV extension solutions. This product was probably conceived asa PC networking solution, but with the convergence o technologies, it has become a great AVsolution also.

The frst PRO2 incarnation o the Aspeed chipset was the HDMIIP. The Aspeed IC allows thetransmitter and receiver units to send or receive HDMI signals via an Ethernet switch hub. Fromthe switch hub you could plug in your chosen transmitters and receivers. The hub doesn't haveto be vlan, managed or unmanaged. It would allow great exibility between the number otransmitters and receivers. For the domestic market, however, without the ability to switchbetween transmitters, the HDMIIP represented more o a commercial solution.

In developing the HDMIIPLR, we went a step urther by adding IR selection. Each transmitter

can be numbered (up to 16) and rom the receiver, you can select your source by its number. Thissystem makes the IR discreet. That means that you could theoretically have up to 16 dierentpay TV boxes and it would be able to distinguish between each one as the transmitters areunique. This single eature made the HDMIIPLR attractive to the domestic market. It would allowa large number o sources and displays to be networked at a budget.

Back to the question o 'being the uture'. For lower budgets, it has ound a place. For the megajobs, it has a ew notable shortcomings. We can't readily integrate it into control systems likeCreston, AMX, RTI etc. We will o course pursue this, but there's nothing on the horizon yet! Italso relies on an IP switch (like a Cisco), which is great or convenience, but the switch will slowdown the switching times between sources, meaning a mandatory pause o maybe 3 seconds asyou switch rom PayTV to DVD. You may think that that's fne or people like me, but the high-end market, they pay big money to have cars that accelerate a second aster and they demandthe same rom their gadgets! So in its current orm, it has a place, but to be all to everyone - no,it has a way to go...

HDMI OVER COAX | IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE?!

The HDMIRG6 is really a SDI solution, more derived rom the proessional broadcasting market.SDI is used to transmit high resolution AV signals over traditional coaxial cable. Being coaxialcable, the strength o this solution is the huge cable distances that are supported and the abilityto use existing cabling. We have also seen SDI explode on to the mass market segment o theCCTV camera market as the rapid uptake o the technology has permitted prices to tumble.

The HDMIRG6 uses a Gennum chipset (by Semtech) which allows us to transmit a ull 1080Psignal over 120m. We actually test this signal using DOSS RG59 cable, but customers havereported jobs where cables have been run as ar as 170m using RG6 Quad! We also opted toinclude the cascade unction, where an additional transmitter IC is placed in the receiver unit.This means that you can daisy chain a huge number o panels rom the one HDMI source. In act,the actory has linked a maximum o 40 panels rom a single 1080P source!
