Dear Parents and Carers
Following on from my email last week. We currently have 2 vacancies for parents to join the Governing Board of Oaks Park High School.
This is an excellent opportunity to make a positive contribution and work as part of a team to help decide the priorities and strategic
direction of the school by working in partnership with the Headteacher, Senior Leaders and other Governors.
We are looking for dedicated individuals who can offer their knowledge and expertise in one or more of these areas; finance, human
resources, health and safety, communications or managing premises.
If you have a passion for improving the life chances of children and can offer supportive challenge to the leadership of our school
to help us to fulfil our vision, please refer to your GroupCall email sent on 31/10/17 for full details of how to apply. If you are interested
and wish to reserve a place at the meeting on Tuesday 7th November at 12 noon or require further information please contact;

International Links The last week of term saw Oaks Park and Alfred-Almond Central School have a video conference surrounding the
issues of Palm Oil. Alfred-Almond is located in Allegany County, New York around 2 hours southeast of Buffalo and
the Canadian border. Within science, Y11 students have been research the effects of palm oil on certain species as
part of Orangutan Land Trust and and Palm Oil Innovation Group’s education programme. Year 11 students Anjalina
and Aqila reflect on their experience:
‘Throughout the week, we had researched the benefits of palm oil and other factors that contribute to the extinction
of the orangutan population. We came together with students from New York, through a video conference, in a
means to discuss global issues. We recognised our roles as global citizens, and the reality of improving the econo-
my or saving a population. We came to the conclusion that both factors were equally important to the citizens of
Indonesia. By continuing to extract palm oil they would be increasing their GDP, however the mass deforestation
included would have devastating in the indigenous creatures. Both New York and here in Oaks Park High School,
the views were similar; both agreeing to balance the components out. As students we learnt the social skill of
interaction, even across the Atlantic Ocean. We are very grateful for this opportunity, and thoroughly enjoyed our
discussion with the New York pupils.’
We are looking forward to our next video conference with Alfred-Almond School in November and
thank you to the LCR and RNLC for hosting the conference.

Age Restrictions Social Media
Attached is a simple chart of age restrictions for social media. We have
been asked by our Safer Schools Police Officer to share this with you so all
of our parents/carers are fully aware of where the law stands with the use
of social media by children and what their legal responsibility is. We would
appreciate your support in making sure that all children are adhering to the
law and that any use of their phone is monitored by parents/carers so they
are using it properly and above all safely.

PiXL 'Getting students into top universities' conference
On Wednesday 1st November 2017, 22 of our Year 12 students travelled to the historic
Westminster Hall to take part in the PiXL Conference on 'Getting students into top universities'.
The students listened intently as they were informed about how best to select the right cours-
es at University, and what preparations need to go into ensuring that highly effective applica-
tions are written. The students also heard from representatives of Oxford University and King's
College London about how best to go about securing a place at their institutions. Oaks Park
students were some of the first to ask these representative about the structures of degree
courses at different Russell Group universities. The day concluded with the students being
given excellent advice on how to fulfil their potential and revise effectively for their A level exams.
The students who took part of the visit form part of our Sixth Form's unique 'Headhunted' group. These students have excelled
academically during and since their GCSEs and have been identified by the Sixth Form team as those who need additional advice
and guidance in making applications to the most competitive courses. They are provided with
personalised advice and are the first to hear about opportunities aimed at students who have the
potential to apply to the Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. The PiXL Conference begins a
new phase for the Headhunted group, who will now embark on Oaks Park's first 'Oxbridge
tutorial programme'. This will see students gaining one to one support from members of staff to
enhance their university applications and give them the academic support necessary in their
endeavour to succeed in gaining a place at the elite universities.

Mia's Visit to Cambridge University
In October, one of our More Able Year 11 students, Mia Olagbaju was lucky enough to visit the University
of Cambridge as part of her Jack Petchey competition. Here she describes how she found visiting the
university and what impact it has had on her thoughts on going to University:
"Taking part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Competition was an amazing
experience and I was lucky enough to be able to visit Corpus Christi College in
Cambridge in October with my fellow Regional Finalists. Being in one of the
most respected and oldest institutions in the country, surrounded by smart and
creative young minds was incredible. During my trip, I was able to speak with
an admissions tutor, tour the college with current undergraduates and have a
history lecture on excommunication in Medieval England. The highlight of my trip was the private tour of the Parker Library, where I
was able to see old manuscripts, texts and images, some that even predate the year 1000. My visit to Corpus Christi was inspiring
and I hope to one day be studying in such an innovative and incredible environment".

Week 7
Attendance - 16th October—20th October 2017
Dear Parents/Carers,
I am delighted to say that attendance has continued to be good again this week. Years 7-13 absence is 4.2% and Years 7-11 is
3.90%. We aim to keep this below 5% at the very most.
We have now been at school for half a term so this gives us a great opportunity to start looking deeper not only at overall figures
but individual students. All students across the school should be fully aware of what percentage attendance they have from the
4th September 2017 until the 20th October 2017. This should be recorded in their planner along with their forms attendance and
year groups attendance to show how they compare to others in their year group. They will also record the number of lates they
have had to all lessons over the term. Can you please take time to look at this with them whilst you are signing their planners
each week. When we have concerns over attendance and punctuality we will always contact you in the first instance so we can
work together. I have a simple table below to demonstrate what attendance looks like in relation to days missed of school and
more importantly the number of learning hours lost, We are grateful for your continued support at Oaks Park and if you do have
any questions please do contact your child’s form tutor in the first instance followed by their pastoral team.
Kind Regards,
Mr Todd
