DEATH VALLEY (continued):• Only six places on earth are deeper than Death Valley, and they are all desert valleys. If these valleys received more rain, erosion would eventually fill them with sediments and they would no longer be below sea level. Also, they’d be lakes instead of valleys. • It’s HOT! The heat is partly caused by the low elevation. With every thousand feet you lose in elevation, the temperature rises by about 5 degrees F. Death Valley’s topography—a deep valley sandwiched between two steep mountain ranges—also magnifies the heat. Hot air rising from the valley floor gets trapped between mountain ranges. The hot air re-circulates and gets hotter. The dryness also contributes to the heat. Death Valley has no clouds for shade, no rain for cooling, and little vegetation to stop rocks from absorbing heat all day. In turn, the heat reinforces the dryness, evaporating rain before it reaches the ground. • The hottest temperature ever recorded in Death Valley was 134 F on July 13, 1913. By comparison, the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth was 136 F, recorded in the Sahara Desert in Libya in 1922.

• When it comes to average highs, Death Valley beats the Sahara. In 2001, Death Valley hit 100 F or higher on 154 days in a row. It’s hit 100 F or higher in every month except November, December, January, and February. It’s hit 110 F on (coincidentally) 110 days in a row, in 1996. And it hit 120 F on 43 days in a row, in 1917.

• July is the hottest month on average, with a daily high of 115 F. August is second, with an average daily high of 113 F. June is third, at 109 F.

• In July, when the average daily high is 115 F, the daily average LOW temperature is 88 F.

• Things cool off in winter. In November the average daily high is 76 F. In February it’s 72 F, and in January and December it’s 65 F.

• Death Valley’s official temperature is recorded at a weather station five feet above the ground. But the ground gets hotter than the air. The hottest ground temperature ever recoded in Death Valley was 201 F in 1972.

• The record low temperature in Death Valley is 15 F, set in 1913, which was the same year that set the record high of 134 F. Death Valley’s all-time low is about the same as the all-time lows of Phoenix or Houston.

• It’s DRY! Why is Death Valley so hot and dry? Don Lago describes the science behind it in his book, Death Valley Trivia. The main factor is called the “rain shadow” effect. When storms come out

Pain Medications and Anesthesia

Modern medicine’s two major triumphs are pain medications and anesthesia. The pain, suffering and death before the advent of these pharmacological agents were immense. Injuries, infection, cancer, tooth decay, intoxications, inflammation, sunburn, etc., etc. all respond to ‘pain killers’/anesthesia thus improving our quality of life. The medical treatment of domestic animals would difficult, if not impossible, without these ‘wonder drugs’. Pain is defined as “an unpleasant sensation, occurring in varying degrees of severity as a consequence of injury, disease or emotional disorder”. Many types of medications are available and they are very effective in blunting acute and chronic pain. The choice of drugs depends on the species, the type of pain, the condition of the patient and what the doctor is trying to accomplish. Cats are sensitive to many medications and care must be taken to use the right medication for the right disease. “Cats are not small dogs” so many canine medications cannot be used between species with success. An example: NSAIDS can be deadly poisons to cats but very effective in treating chronic pain in dogs. Anesthesia is defined as the administration of medications to create complete or partial loss of sensation/consciousness during a medical or surgical procedure. Modern safe anesthesia is usually a combination of medications addressing the complex nature of the patient. Before anesthesia all patients are ranked with a ‘risk assessment’ protocol. Avoiding complications is usually accomplished before the anesthetic procedure. Knowing the health of the patient will determine the type of anesthesia to be used and how long the anesthetic can be used safely. Is anesthesia safe in older cats? Age is not a disease. Most older patients can safely undergo anesthesia if the pre-anesthesia screening shows that they are healthy. The number one health threat in cats is dental disease. Without anesthesia dentistry would be impossible. Try brushing your cats teeth . . . 98% of the time it will end in failure. Orthopedic surgery to fix a broken leg and the pain involved would make the procedure impossible. Ouch! Currently the risk of death during a feline anesthetic procedure is 1 in 2,500 which equals 0.04%. The goal is to eliminate pain and be able to complete a medical/surgical procedure safely. A complete physical exam, pre-anesthetic blood testing & urinalysis, pre-anesthetic screening for heart disease, treating any underlying diseases before the anesthesia procedure are the first steps in deciding whether the patient is a good anesthetic risk. Picking the best anesthetic combination, state-of-the-art monitoring and having the best medical team insures the best anesthetic outcome.

Morganite

Need a little peace, love and joy? Try mor-ganite! Morganite was rst classied with the color-ful group of the beryls. Then in 1911, upon the suggestion of New York gemologist G. F. Kunz, the pink variety of beryl was named in honor of banker and mineral collector John Pierpont Morgan – thus, morganite. Why? Probably because JP Morgan had become one of America's most important collectors of gems and had assembled the most important gem collection in the U.S. consiting of over 1000 pieces. Morganite features a pink tone that radiates charm, vivacity and tenderness that the colorless beryl does not have. So, if you’re still shopping for that perfect gift – a piece of morganite gemstone jewelry might be precisely what you need. For sure, it will enchant the wearer and endear her to you forever! Some say the very site of morganite puts you in a good mood even when times are tough. Sounds like the perfect gemstone for today’s stress-lled world. We could all use a little peace, a little love, and a little joy!

Dealing With Damage from major storms

Q: After the recent megastorm, we had a lot of de-bris strikes on our house. The gutter and eaves took a lot of damage, with some of the gutters torn down and the eaves looking ratty. How expensive is this to fix? I don’t have a lot of money. -- Flores C., Taun-

ton, Mass.

A: The gutters themselves should not be too expen-sive to re-hang, or replace if badly damaged. How-ever, if there is damage to the roof eaves, you need to have a professional check it out and assess just

how severely those debris strikes affected the roof. You also should contact your insurance company to

report the damage.Because the damage occurred as a result of Hur-ricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast in late October, your state was under a declared state of

emergency. This means that in addition to state funds to repair and clean up storm damage, some federal funds have likely been allotted. Your state’s emer-gency management agency (MEMA, in this case)

can provide information on how and where to report damage, how to work with your insurance company

to get repairs made, and other important advice. While you’ll need to do your homework to find out

what funding is available to cover the repairs (if your insurance provider doesn’t), there are some general

guidelines to follow no matter what. Have more than one contractor or roofing company check out the

roof, eaves and gutters; have each provide you with a written estimate of the cost, as well as an estimate

of how much time it will take to effect the repair. Do not allow work to start until you’ve agreed to the

cost and scope of the work and have signed off on the estimate.

If you’re at all uncertain about your ability to ne-gotiate a fair price for the repair job, or to fill out

requests for repair assistance or reimbursement, ask a trusted friend or relative to help you with the proc-

ess.

HOME TIP: Gutters and eaves are key protective el-ements of a house, part of the “envelope” that keeps water and pests out. Make repairs as quickly as pos-sible to prevent damage to other parts of your home.

of the Pacific Ocean and head inland, they have to cross a series of mountain ranges, which force clouds to rise, condense, and drop their moisture. With every mountain range they cross, the clouds have less moisture left for the next one. The Sierras can get 34 feet of snow per year, but then the clouds have little moisture left for the Owens Valley just west of the Sierras; the Owens Valley gets less than 6 inches of rain per year. Clouds that make it past the Sierras then hit the Panamint Mountains and lose most of their remaining moisture. This leaves little rain for Death Valley, or for the Amargosa Range on the east side of Death Valley. While the Panamints get 15 inches of annual precipitation, the Amargosa Range gets only 3-5 inches.

• The average annual rainfall in Death Valley is only 1.94 inches. By comparison, New York City receives an average of 49.64 inches of rain per year. In some years, Death Valley has recorded no rainfall at all, such as 1929 and 1953.

• With so little rainfall and so much evaporation, the humidity level in Death Valley sometimes falls to 2 percent. With humidity this low, even when the temperature is a pleasant 70 F, people can become seriously dehydrated.

• Even in the summer heat, people in Death Valley may not get sweaty. The human skin often remains dry. But this doesn’t mean you aren’t perspiring: it means that perspiration is evaporating instantly. For people from humid climates, who are accustomed to skin and clothes drenched with sweat, this can trick them into seriously underestimating how much water they are losing.

Don't Overlook Financial Risks in

Retirement When you retire, you may well have accomplished some important financial goals, such as

sending your children through college and paying off your mortgage. Yet, you can’t relax just yet, because your retirement could easily last two or three decades, which means you’ll need at least two or three decades’ worth of income — which, in turn, means you’ll need the proper savings and investment strategies in place. And, just as importantly, you’ll also need to be aware of the types of risk that could threaten these strategies.

Let’s consider some of these risks:

Longevity — None of us can say for sure how long we’ll live. But it's still important to have an estimate, based on your health and family history. So if you think you may live, for 25 years in retire-ment, you’ll want to withdraw enough from your investments each year to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle — but not so much that you deplete your funds before the 25 years have passed. Inflation — We’ve experienced pretty mild inflation over the past few years. But over time, even a low rate of inflation can seriously erode your purchasing power. To illustrate: If your current monthly costs are $3,000, with only a 3% annual inflation rate, that would be about $4,000 in 10 years. And in 25 years at that same rate, your monthly costs will have more than doubled, to about $6,200. To help protect yourself against inflation risk, it's important to have at least some investments that offer growth potential, rather than only owning fixed-income vehicles, such as certificates of deposit (CDs). You’ll also want to consider sources of rising income potential, such as dividend-paying stocks. (Keep in mind, though, that stocks can reduce or discontinue dividends at any time and are subject to market fluctuation and loss of principal.) Market Fluctuations — When you retire and begin taking with-drawals from your investment portfolio — that is, when you begin selling off investments — you’d obviously like prices to be high. After all, the classic piece of investment advice is “buy low, sell high.” But it’s impossible to try to “time” the market this way, as it will always fluctuate. That’s why you may want to consider sources of income whose value is not dependent on what’s happening in the financial markets. Your financial advisor may be able to recom-mend investments that can provide you with this type of income stream. Low interest rates — Many retirees depend on fixed-rate invest-ments for a good portion of their retirement income — so it’s a real challenge when interest rates are low. Consequently, when you retire, you’ll certainly need to be aware of the interest-rate envi-ronment and the income you can expect from these investments. Longer-term fixed-rate vehicles may be tempting, as they typically offer higher rates than shorter-term ones, but these longer term investments may have more price fluctuation and inflation risk than shorter-term investments. Consequently, you'll still likely need balance between short, intermediate, and long-term investments to provide for a portion of your income in retirement.

Retirement can be a rewarding time in your life. And you can help make your retirement years even more enjoyable by understanding the relevant investment risks and taking steps to address them.

Ask the Dentistby Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Q. My 7 year-old daughter has no cavities. Should she have sealants placed to protect her teeth, or can she just brush and floss?A. It depends on several factors. You and your daughter can control some factors, such as effective oral hygiene, diet (sweet snacking), and regular preventive dental visits. However, you cannot control the hereditary anatomy of her teeth. That is, some children (and adult) teeth have deep pits and fissured grooves (“groovy teeth”). It can become nearly impossible for the toothbrush bristle to reach that last little “sugar bug” entrenched deep into the deep pit or fis-sure. This plus even a little “sugar” in the diet from processed foods can set up decay. Research has shown that almost everybody has a 95% chance of getting cavities in these areas. A well-placed sealant can protect the “groovy” tooth surface from bacteria and acid attack caused by sweet snacking.Q. What is a sealant?A. sealant is a thin plastic film bonded to the chewing surfaces of the tooth. The sealant fills in the deep pits and grooves where bacteria can hide. The “sugar bugs” have fewer places set up shop, which prevents decay. It’s important to note that a sealant is only effective in the pits and groove areas, not the smooth surfaces of the tooth that are easier to clean.

Q. Are the effective?A. Yes! About 80% of de-cay occurs in the deep pits and grooves of the chew-ing surfaces. Combined with twice-daily brushing with a fluoridated tooth-paste, healthy nutrition, and twice-yearly visits to the dentist, properly ap-plied sealants are 100 per-

cent effective in preventing cavities in these areas. Sealants have been described as “the greatest advance in preventive dentistry since fluoride”. Please send in your questions. You can Ask the Dentist by calling Dr. Burgner

¥ On Dec. 1, 1830, French novelist Victor Hugo is due to turn in a draft of his book “Notre Dame de Paris” (“The Hunchback of Notre Dame”). Despite his contract, he instead wrote two plays, “Marion de Lorme” and “Hernani,” and the book is not published until 1831.

¥ On Nov. 26, 1862, Oxford mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson sends a handwrit-ten manuscript called “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground” to 10-year-old Alice Liddell. Dodgson made up the story one day on a picnic, and Alice insisted he write it down. He published it under his nom de plume, Lewis Carroll, in 1865.

A GREAT STORY!

A GERMAN TOURIST JUMPED IN THE FREEZING WATER AND SAVED MY PRE-CIOUS LITTLE DOG.UPON GETTING BACK ON THE BRIDGE, HE CHECKED MY PUPPIE OUT AND TOLD ME,

"ZE DOG IS OK. HE VILL BE FINE."

Due to his selfless heroic act, I ASKED, "ARE YOU A VET?"

HE REPLIED,

"VET? I'M FREAKING SOAKED!"

PonderismsCan you cry under water? How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered? If money doesn’t grow on trees then why do banks have branches? Since bread is square, then why is sandwich meat round? Why do you have to “put your two cents in”... but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”? Where’s that extra penny going to? Once you’re in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? What disease did cured ham actually have? How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up like every two hours? If you drink Pepsi at work in the Coke factory, will they fire you? Why are you IN a movie, but you’re ON TV? Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and hen put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? How come we choose from just two people for President and fifty for Miss America?

Why do Doctors call their work practice?
