In memoriam, Tidbits brings you the facts and figures of this monumental tragedy, as well as information about the famous 1997 film produced by James Cameron. • Constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland, the Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world at the time. Nearly 14,000 labor- ers contributed to her construction, at a cost of nearly $8 million. (Compare this to the cost of making Cameron’s 1997 movie “Titanic,” with a production price tag of over $200 million.) • The ship was four city blocks long and weighed 46,329 tons. Three million rivets held the hull togeth- er. On launch day, 44,000 pounds (19,958 kg) of soap, grease and oil were required to slide the massive craft into the water. Twenty-nine boilers fueled the 159 coal- burning furnaces. The coolers were stocked with 75,000 pounds (34,019 kg) of fresh meat, 11,000 pounds (4,989 kg) of fresh fish, 36,000 oranges, 40,000 eggs, 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg) of butter and 1,500 gallons (6,819 l) of milk. The cupboards were filled with 12,000 dinner plates, 3,000 teacups, 300 nutcrackers, 6,000 tablecloths and 45,000 napkins. turn the page for more!

THE TITANIC (continued):• Although designed and licensed to carry 3,500 passengers, only 2,223 people were on board, in-cluding millionaire John Jacob Astor, mining mag-nate Benjamin Guggenheim and Macy’s depart-ment store owners Isidor and Ida Straus. The most elegant first-class suites were priced at $4,350, which translates to about $75,000 in today’s money. Second-class fares were $1,750 ($24,000 today), and third class steerage was available for $30, about $350 today. First-class passengers ate their meals from fine china edged in 22k gold• The final evening meal served on the Titanic consisted of 11 different courses, including raw oysters as an hors d’oeuvre, cream of barley soup, cold asparagus vinaigrette and roast duckling. • Four days into the Atlantic crossing, the ship struck an iceberg, one estimated at 500,000 tons, with 50 feet (15.2 m) above the water and seven-eighths of its bulk below. Icebergs are typically at their worst during April, because warmer spring temperatures melt the thick ice of the sea that has held the icebergs in place, releasing them to float free. The ship’s wireless operators received seven telegraphed ice warnings that fateful night. The final message, placed under a paperweight, was never delivered to those on the ship’s bridge. The ice field the Titanic encountered was close to 80 miles (128 km) long.

• The ship was equipped with lifeboats for 1,178 of the more than 2,200 people on board. The death toll was 1,517, of which only 306 bodies were re-covered. Although a lifeboat could hold 65 people, the first one was launched with only 28 on board. Had the crew loaded the existing lifeboats to ca-pacity, 500 more lives could have been saved.

• The original plans called for an additional 12 lifeboats on the deck, but the White Star Line’s management ditched the idea, claiming the deck would “look too cluttered.”

• It was not a large gash in the hull of the Titanic that caused her to sink; rather the force of the im-pact caused the steel rivets to pop, buckling the steel plates of the hull. Based on the ship’s speed of about 22 knots, if the iceberg had been sighted only 30 seconds sooner, the collision could have been avoided. With one knot equal to 1.516 mph (2.44 km/h), 22 knots was close to the highest speed the ship had ever reached.

• It took only two hours and 40 minutes for the Titanic to sink after striking the iceberg. The ship that responded immediately to the distress calls was the Carpathia, 58 miles (93 km) away. Unfor-tunately, it took four hours for the ship to reach the Titanic. The Carpathia carried the 700-plus survi-

Special Senior Cats – Making a Difference One on One

(Part 1 of 4: Vinnie; Billie; Roxie and Columbine)

Senior cats are special companions for senior owners. Vinnie was the 28th cat owned by Monica. Vinnie was 17 and Monica was 90 years old. Each lived for the other and a strong loving bond had been formed. Vinnie came to Cat Specialist to be cured of hyperthyroidism and to get long term care with chronic kidney disease. Both cat and owner had a need that a group of people (10 in all) formed a bond with Monica to help her care for herself and to care for Vinnie. The goal was to have Vinnie live longer than Monica! Members of the group helped Monica with house chores, running errands, spending time talking and medicating Vinnie. This plan worked well until Monica’s health failed and she was forced to go to assisted living. What was to become of Vinnie? Monica talked to Dr. Jim Olson and it was decided that Vinnie would take on a new job – the ‘meet and greet’ cat at Cat Specialist. Vinnie would visit Monica at her new home every other week to keep their loving bond intact.

Vinnie’s new life as the ‘meet and greet’ cat was a natural fit. She was an outgoing feline that loved attention. Her medical care was ongoing – benazepril, subcutaneous fluids, a special diet and she was the perfect patient. Clients and area residents (some didn’t even own a cat) would visit Vinnie to see the perky feline dish out love and affection. Smiles and laughter filled the reception area. Trips to visit Monica were such an adventure with Vinnie knowing she would be with mom. Monica lived another 2 years, dying on St. Patrick’s Day. Vinnie lived another year and a half after Monica – Vinnie’s life filled so many with joy. Monica is now in heaven with all her 28 cats!

Emeralds, aquamarines, and the charming pink of morganite have left gemstone-lovers spellbound for years. They are famous for their variety of color, sparkling brilliance, and suitability for jewelry. What many don’t realize is that they belong to a single family - they are all beryls. The rare red beryl, the golden beryl, the yellowish-green heliodor, the pink, or the colorless goshenite beryl are all different but have similar chemical and physical properties, making them related. Beryl is found in the gemstone deposits of South America and those of Central and West Africa. However, they also occur on Madagas-car, in Russia and the Ukraine, and in Goshen, Massachusetts where goshenite berly is mined. The skilled hands of gemstone cutters turn them into a multitude of many-faceted shapes. In particular, beryls are well suited to rectangu-lar or square step cuts, since it takes a clear design to bring out to the full the transparent beauty of this colorful gemstone family.

Clearing Away Wasps

Q: Checking out the eaves last week, I saw sever-al small wasp nests tucked into the more sheltered

corners. What’s the best way to get rid of these nests? -- Charlie L. in South Carolina

A: There are a few ways to remove those small wasp nests from the exterior of your house, and the quicker, the better. Wasps could possibly begin extending the nests inside the walls if they’re not dealt with. In fact, you’ll want to check the attic or storage space above the eaves, as well as crawl-spaces under the house, for evidence of wasps be-fore starting the removal. To remove the wasp nest, make sure the kids and pets are inside to prevent possible stings from an-gry wasps. Wear long sleeves, pants, work gloves and sturdy shoes to protect yourself. And of course, if you have an allergy to bee stings, don’t clear the nests yourself; call in a pest-control service. The most effective way to get rid of the nests and reduce the chances of the wasps coming back is to use a chemical spray. Wait until dusk, when the wasps have returned to the nests, then spray ac-cording to the directions on the product. You may have to wait up to a week for all activity in the nests to subside; then you can climb up to the eaves and carefully pull off the nests. An all-natural method for wasp removal is to gear up (cover all your skin, put protective netting over your face, and have an escape route) and spray each nest with a jet of water from your garden hose. This doesn’t kill the wasps, and you’ll prob-ably see them building nests again in fall or spring. What if you found that the wasps have gotten in-side your home’s siding during your initial survey? You’ll probably want to stick with the chemical spray of the outside nests (not your interior walls) in order to kill them. One of my readers recom-mended using a wet/dry vacuum with a hose attach-ment to suck up as many wasps from their entry/exit point as possible. If neither of these methods eradicate the wasps, contact a pest-control service.

HOME TIP: Found a wasp’s nest in a tree at the far end of the yard? Consult a pest-control service before removing it, as the displaced wasps could simply move over to your house.

Q: What are porcelain veneers?A: Porcelain veneers are thin, durable shells designed to cover the front of the tooth. They are often used to lighten stains, close gaps, and even alter crooked or malformedteeth. You can change the shape, color, and length of your teeth using veneers. They are made of porcelain, and are durable, stain-resistant, natural-looking, and easy to maintain. Veneers are custom-fitted to your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel and bonding the veneer to your teeth

using a safe, high tech polymer resin.

Q: Will I need a shot?

A: Porcelain Veneers require little or no shots, and are painless.

Q: What’s the difference between Porcelain Veneers and Crowns?

A: Porcelain Veneers cover the front of the tooth. Crowns cover the entire tooth’s front and back. Veneers provide a much more conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color, size, or shape.

Q: Can Veneers close gaps in my smile?

A. Yes! Porcelain Veneers can be the ideal choice for closing gaps and spaces, and improving the appearance of the front teeth.

Q. What’s in a smile?Q. Is it happy, beautiful / handsome,

straight, and white? Or is it discolored, worn, broken, chipped, spaced-out, tired, and embarrassing?

vors into New York harbor, where the ship was met by over 40,000 people.

• Most of the victims froze to death rather than drowned in the 28º F (-2º C) water, where death oc-curred in as little as 15 minutes. When James Cam-eron produced his 1997 movie blockbuster, he in-structed cast members on the stages of hypothermia in order to make their scenes more realistic. Cameron advised his cast, “It’s supposedly a very peaceful feel-ing.” The actors’ icy frozen hair was created by coat-ing hair with colored wax.

• Of the 306 bodies recovered, 150 were never claimed. Those unclaimed were buried in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

• Captain Edward Smith had plans of retiring after safely navigating the Titanic to New York City, wrap-ping up 38 years with the White Star Line.

• The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in Sep-tember 1985, on an expedition led by Robert Bal-lard. She lay approximately 400 miles (644 km) off the coast of Newfoundland, 1,191 miles (1,917 km) from New York City, 12,460 feet (3,798 m) below the ocean’s surface. The bow and the stern were 1,970 feet (600 m) apart. During Ballard’s expedition, more than 20,000 photos were shot in four days. • Producer James Cameron made 12 trips to the ac-tual wreckage site to conduct research for his 1997 film. His movie contains actual footage from these trips, shot on location. A replica of the ship was con-structed for the film, and it was sunk in an immense tank filled with 17 million gallons of water. A hydrau-lic lift was used to tilt the tank and raise and lower the ship.

• Several items recovered from the wreckage now reside in a Philadelphia museum, including Mrs. John Jacob Astor’s lifebelt, a menu from the dining room, a deck chair and a piece of wood from a lifeboat.

Put Time - and Tax-Advantaged Investments - on Your Side

If you’re relatively young, and you’ve been investing only a few years, you pos-sess an asset that is invaluable and cannot be replaced: time. And the more time you spend contributing to tax-advantaged in-vestments, the better off you may be.

As an investor, time is your ally for two reasons. First, the more time you give to your growth-oriented investments, the greater their growth potential. And sec-ond, the effects of market volatility have tended to decrease over time, though as you no doubt have heard, past perform-

ance is not a guarantee of future results.

Clearly, it pays to put time on your side. And when you’re invest-ing in tax-advantaged vehicles, time becomes an even more critical component of investment success, especially when you are young and have several decades ahead of you before you retire.

Suppose, for example, that you put $200 per month into an invest-ment on which you paid taxes every year. If you earned a hypotheti-cal 7% return on this investment, you’d end up with about $324,000 after 40 years. But if you put that same $200 per month into a tax-deferred investment, such as a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and you earned that same 7% return, you’d wind up with about $513,000 after 40 years. Of course, once you starting taking withdrawals, presumably when you’re retired, you’ll have to pay taxes on your earnings, so your after-tax accumulation would be about $385,000, assuming you took your IRA in a lump sum (which most people don’t) and also assuming you were in the 25% tax bracket. However, by the time you retire, you may be in a lower bracket. Plus, you have some control over how much you withdraw each year, so you may be able to affect the taxes you’ll pay. Fur-thermore, depending on your income level, your contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible in the years in which you make the contributions. (Keep in mind that this hypothetical exam-ple is for illustrative purposes only and does not represent a specific investment or investment strategy.)

While tax deferral is obviously a nice feature for an investment, tax-free may be even better. If you meet the income requirements, you might want to consider investing in a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings withdrawals, provided you’ve held your account for at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59½. This means that, in the above example, you’d have accumulated that same $513,000 — but you won’t have to pay taxes on your withdrawals. Generally speaking, the Roth IRA may make more financial sense for those who are eligible, but if you think you’ll be in a lower tax bracket when you retire, and your income level permits you to deduct some of your contribu-tions, you may want to consider a traditional IRA. Consult with your tax advisor for guidance on the most appropriate approach for your situation.

When it comes to building resources for retirement, it’s almost im-possible to save and invest “too much.” So take full advantage of both time and tax-advantaged investments. By putting these invest-ments to work for you, and by keeping them at work, you’ll be putting time on your side as you work toward your financial goals.

STRANGE BUT TRUEby Samantha Weaver

It was beloved American humorist Will Rogers who made the following sage observation: “You can’t say civilization don’t advance, for in every war they kill you a new way.”

Elkhart, Ind., has the dubious distinction of being the RV capital of the world.

According to a survey by the magazine Vegetarian Times, if you’re a vegetarian, you have 3 percent of the U.S. population for company. Only half of 1 percent of Americans are vegans, consuming no animal products at all, while 10 percent say they follow a “vegetarian-inclined” diet.

The Hawaiian alphabet has only 12 letters.

In 1743 one Dr. John Cohausen wrote a book called “Hermippus Redivivus,” in which he described how anyone could live to the ripe old age of 115 -- a particu-larly impressive feat in the 18th century. His recipe for a long life involved burning gum olibani, styrae, myrrh and a variety of herbs, then inhaling the fumes, while at the same time “imbibing the exhalations of the nearest little girl.”

According to the law in the town of Chester, England, if you catch a Welshman within the city walls after the sun has gone down, you may shoot him with a long-bow.

Those who study such things say that the asteroids are so rich in minerals that one cubic kilometer of one of these heavenly bodies would provide the materials to make enough steel to supply the world’s industry for more than a decade, with more than a century’s worth of nickel, to boot.

The shortest complete sentence in the English lan-guage is “Go.”

If you’re like half of all Americans, you live within 50 miles of your childhood home. ***Thought for the Day: “If you live to the age of a hun-dred, you’ve got it made, because very few people die past the age of a hundred.” -- George Burns

On April 27, 4977 B.C., the universe is created, according to 17th-century German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler. Scientists in the 20th century developed the Big Bang theory, which showed that Kepler’s calculations were off by about 13.7 billion years.

On April 23, 1564, according to tradition, the great English dramatist and poet William Shakespeare is born in Stratford-on-Avon. It is impossible to be certain the exact day on which he was born, but church records show that he was baptized on April 26, and three days was a customary amount of time to wait before baptizing a newborn.

On April 26, 1865, John Wilkes Booth is killed when Union soldiers track him down to a Virginia farm 12 days after he assassinated President Abra-ham Lincoln. The original plan involved a simul-taneous assassination of Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward.

On April 24, 1936, a group of firemen respond-ing to an alarm in Camden, N.J., is televised. It was the first time an unplanned event was broad-cast on television, anticipating the development of live TV news coverage.

On April 25, 1947, President Harry Truman of-ficially opens the first White House bowling al-ley. Eisenhower closed the two-lane alley in 1955 and turned it into a mimeograph room. Nixon had a one-lane alley installed underground directly beneath the North Portico entrance of the White House.

On April 28, 1958, “The Witch Doctor,” by sing-er/songwriter David Seville, hits the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s pop charts. The song used the unu-sual technique of recording the singer’s voice at a speed different than the music.

On April 29, 1974, President Richard Nixon an-nounces to the public that he will release tran-scripts of 46 taped White House conversations in response to a Watergate trial subpoena. On Aug. 8, 1974, Nixon avoided a Senate impeachment trial by becoming the first American president to resign from office.

BUD LIGHT

I went into my proctologist's office for my first rec-tal exam.

His new blond nurse, Evelyn, took me to an examin-ing room and told me to get undressed and have a seat until the doctor could see me. She said that he would only be a few minutes.

After putting on the gown that she gave me I sat down. While waiting I observed that there were three items on a stand Next to the exam table:

A Tube of K-Y jelly, a rubber glove and a beer.

When the doctor finally came in I said, "Look Doc, I'm a little confused. This is my first exam...I know what the K-Y is for and I know what the glove is for, but can you tell me what the BEER is for?

At that Doctor Paul became noticeably outraged and stormed over to the door. He flung the door open and yelled to his new nurse......

Darn it Evelyn !!!

I said a "BUTT LIGHT"!
