It just gets better and better at BGCBy Keith Beggs Hon Treasurer and Vice President)

Venue ManagerAt time of writing this article I’m pleased to advise that the new BGC Website Member Portal Venue Manager (VM) has recently gone LIVE, with several members already taking advantage of having their membership financial status upgraded instantly upon payment of the Membership renewal Invoice. This is what happened in the previous portal ClubLink and I’m very pleased to see this time saving (back office) facility continue with inbuilt added improvements.

The process of modifying on-line systems hasn’t progressed without a few problems, as anyone involved in website development would understand. But we made it! The portal is now a facility where you’ll have access to your own Club account to top-up your house account, pay fees, view results, check future completions and locate fellow members contact details. With the new enhanced software this can all be done on your PC, Mac or on the fly with your mobile phone or tablet.

The other matter I was remiss in mentioning in the bulk email is that before paying subs on-line members should collect their invoice from the Club. This is because the invoice has the all-important Membership Number and Password on the remittance slip. It is mentioned in the bulk email send on 1st October – but not emphasized.

So I’ll take this opportunity of asking members to collect their Renewal invoice from the Clubrooms prior to trying to login to the portal.

BPGC & Dendy Park Sustainable Water SupplyThanks to reasonably fine weather the project is proceeding well and we’re looking forward to a completion date this month. I know what a pain this has been for a lot of members but change had to take place because of the condition of the ‘course prior to the start of works’.

Early in 2015 the Committee of Management took what I regard as prompt action, via the forming of a special sub-committee, when the membership started to complain about state of the Course.

This saw many meetings with LMS and BCC which resulted in the successful petitioning within the local neighbourhood for a sustainable water supply for the golf course and Dendy Park. This is what we’re seeing now when we are walking or playing the course.

This is the largest Golf Course infrastructure project undertaken by Bayside City Council, (it has not cost us a cent- we got these $3 Million works commissioned and undertaken for free!) but from the outset the scope of the project and interruption to play was inevitable.

Page 4: Issue #74 September 2017 BGC News - Brighton Golf Club...Issue #74 September 2017 September Edition BGC News 97-99 Glencairn Ave, East Brighton 3187 P: 03 9592 7806 E: bgolf@bigpond.net.au

The CoM did convey to the membership how important it was going to be to be patient. It’s short term pain for a long term gain. I urge members to have a good look at the works already undertaken and now nearing completion particularly the enormous availability of water we will have in the near future;

• Widening, Lengthening and excavation of water storage dam on 2nd Hole

• Widening, Lengthening and excavation of water storage dam on 11th Hole

• New water purification on the 10th Hole

The CoM is watching progress closely and will continue to keep members up to date with the promised regular reports coming from LMS.

MembershipI’d like to appeal the all Members of the Brighton Golf Club to take every and any opportunity that presents itself to promote and encourage friends acquaintances and even those you meet on the golf course to join the BGC. As mentioned below the club has a lot to offer, compared to other clubs and the golf course will get back to being one of the best in the metro area.

FinallyWe are a small private sporting club which others are envious of. Indeed as one member mentioned ‘it’s a hidden gem and our little secret’.

Most sporting clubs particularly in Bayside can only wish that they had;

• A private car park facility in Brighton• That they ‘owned’ the freehold in Brighton• That we have no debts• Full Bar facilities in Brighton with the cheapest bar

prices between ‘Elwood and Black Rock’• The most up to date Competition, Handicapping,

Leaderboard, integrated accounting system, an on-line subs and house account payment portal.

• A recently revamped class 2 kitchen with fabulous food provided by qualified staff

• Soon to be installed Foxtel TV system with large screens

• OH! Don’t let me forget to mention the new comfortable lounges and chairs soon to be provided for the benefit and comfort of members and guests.

So, I’ll finish by saying; if you‘re not totally happy with how the club is running, turn up at the next AGM. Put voice to your complaints, if you want more tell us, give the CoM your ideas or better still put your hand up for a committee position at the forthcoming Club elections.

Remember this is your club................!

Long time member and volunteer around our club Trevor George has been in the wars.

After a recent stint in hospital and rehab he is home and recovering although his return to our club maybe delayed a little. Reports from wife Sandra confirm that Trevor is on the path to recovery with the rebuilding of strength in the body the first priority.

He says he is keen to return asap, and if you know Trevor, that is motivation enough for this diehard Collingwood supporter.

Get Well Soon Trev’ – we need you!!

Construction work is nearing completion on Council’s $2.95 million stormwater harvesting project at Brighton Golf Course. The dryer weather has enabled works to continue with minimal delays and most works to be completed by the end of September 2017.

The project will see around 86 Megalitres of water diverted from the Melbourne Water stormwater system each year that will be naturally treated and used to water both the Brighton Golf Course and areas of Dendy Park.

Work to date The topsoiling of all lakes is nearing completion

The rockwork beaching within the lakes is 50% completed

The construction of the two rain gardens is being finalised

Approximately 800 shrubs will be placed on the South Road soil stockpile to replace the removed pines.

The concrete pits and pump station for the buffer storage are being installed. Backfilling will commence in late September and then the practice fairway reshaped and grassed during early October

The turtles accommodation is being closely monitored

Completion dateWhile most works will be completed by the end of September, completion of the Irrigation pump station and water diversion from the Melbourne Water Drain will be about one month later.

Leisure Management Services updateThe works are continuing full steam ahead, although it may look from the exterior things have slowed a little the contactor is hard at work on the interior of the design. Rock walls, soil compaction and top soil base are currently being laid, to ensure sealed dams which will never leak or erode.

You will notice over the next few weeks a few large logs being placed around the dams and also native shrubs planted on the water line. This is to help the environment develop within the dam ensuring the survival of all the wildlife which live beneath the surface, especially our 180 turtles!

During the storm water harvesting project ground staff have undertake a few other tasks which will compliment the finished product. These include:

• New tees on the 16th and 18th holes• Drainage line from the bunker on the front right

of the 2nd hole• New sewage line from the on-course toilets

so we can get them operational again• Lifting of tea tree around the course • Filling in some un-needed bunkers• Path works

We are also happy to announce that a new highly qualified Superintendant is due to start in the next month which will ensure the course is kept in pristine condition come the end of the project.

Congratulations also go out to our Head Professional and Manager Travis Harrison on winning the 2016/17 Victorian PGA club professional of the year. Book your next lesson in to learn from one of the industry’s leaders. See below press release.

Cobra Golf Demo DayWednesday 13th September 12noon-4pm

Try out all the latest gear from Cobra golf including the new MAX range and the revolutionary one length irons. Bring your clubs along on the day and compare it to the latest equipment so you can justify any purchase.

Leisure Management Services updateThe weather gods have continued to be good to us with the rain coming at night and we have enjoyed mainly dry days. There have been some chilly mornings this winter but this has not stopped the works continuing on full steam ahead. The new dam has been formed on the 11th which will lead to the hole being an enjoyable challenge and give that area of the course some real character in the future.

School is back for term 3 and the junior program is in full swing. Junior Tiger Clinics are run every day of the week after school and also on weekends, so there are options to cater for every busy family. There are still a few spots left in the program so take advantage of our term 3 special and bring the kids along to have a free trail class.

September is club fitting month at Brighton with 2 big club fitting/demo days. These events are free to attend so you can enjoy a day out trying the latest gear.

• He noted that total BGC income at this time is less than same period last year and compared to this year’s budget.

• Bar income and member subscriptions are still below budget. Unfortunately bar wages are above the budget.

• Additional members volunteering for bar duty would help reduce this wages expense.

Secretary provided written report: • New memberships are, as usual, very low at this

time of our year, although some applications have been received and new member recruiting is now aimed for new members from 1st October.

• The BGC 5-year planning work is to continue, and as the BPGC is upgraded and more reliable water supply becomes available over the next few years, more realistic assumptions about the future for BGC can be made and incorporated in our plans.

• Over 300 Member renewal letters and Annual subscription invoices covering our financial year from 1st Oct, 2017 to 30th September, 2018 are planned to be available in our club rooms for collection by members from Wednesday 4th October and over the following two weeks.

• Preparations for our AGM on November 21st are already underway. All positions on our Committee of Management (CoM) are available for members, financial as at 31st October, to nominate and stand for election at the AGM. Nomination forms are available from the club office. Advance nominations have been received for Hon. Treasurer and Hon. Secretary.

• A paid Club Manager position is being evaluated by a sub-committee for the future operation of our club, should there not be enough member volunteers available, at some time in the future.

Captain provided written report:• Stirling Hookway won the Fred Meean Memorial

Trophy, beating Ray Desmond in close contest.• The Men’s Championships have been postponed

until November, due to the course works. • The modified course, 9-holes, played twice, is

continuing at least until October.• The annual challenge Vic. Veterans vs BGC will be

held Monday 25th September at BPGC, followed by lunch at our clubhouse. The starting order will be displayed at BGC Saturday 23rd September.

• Aug/Sep Birdie Comp winner is Ken Brown.• The Bayside Golf Challenge, BGC, Elsternwick and

Sandringham clubs will be played at Elsternwick course Sunday 8th October, in teams of eight, playing aggregate par. Best individual score wins the Life Time Trophies Medal.

• Glen Martin Golf day (AFL Grand Final guest day) will be played Saturday 30th September, shotgun start at 7.25/7.30 am. The House of Golf sponsors this event with prizes for the winning team and vouchers for all players to use at their Mentone store.

• No new full members signed up during August.

Ladies sub-com President provided report: • No Wednesday competitions were cancelled due

to rain. • The Ladies are now “tidying and rearranging” their

rooms and are happy with the re-painting completed by our volunteers over the last couple of weeks.

• Preparations are under way for the Nepean Shield and for the President and Captain’s Day Trophy events.

When you think of school and a golf club it would be natural to think of golf tuition.

Not so recently when students, teachers and parents from the Brighton Secondary College just around the corner in Dendy Street, came to our club to show off their talents. The concert was performed by music students from years 7 and 8.

Approximately 50 performers and about 100 parents attended with 2 more bookings coming from this very successful event.

As you can see from the pics the place was crowded and a great time was had by all.

The clubby atmosphere of the BGC was considered to be much more appealing than a cavernous and cold school hall. If you couple that with a fully licensed bar, quality catering and plenty of off street parking it was an ideal venue.

Firstly, well done to those members who made this happen. We have been talking about brining in additional income from other than members for a long time but here is tangible proof that it can be done.

Secondly, it makes you think our facility could well be of interest to others too. This helps each and every club member by reducing the pressure on their pocket to run our club.

Special rates apply to club members too. So “WHY NOT use our clubrooms for YOUR next function!!” Talk to club member and caterer David Heraud.

Brighton Golf Club Winter Classic 2017

What a wonderfully competitive year we have had. It was very interesting that the top 4 of last year, became the bottom 4 this year.

The winning side ASADA Squad consisted of :

Alex Johnson (the Captain):The Beloved Alex was inspirational the way he delegated to his side, while he met all his holiday commitments during the season. Alex produced in the final a score that counted in the best three for his side.

Kate Tester and Daryl Carter:They are “The Team“ within a team. Their start to the season was outstanding and gave the team the foundation to go all the way. It deserves a mention that on the final day Kate got out of her sick bed to play, what an effort.

Colin McDonald:“The Grunt“ behind the team, turning up every weekend (rain, hail or shine ) as Alex’s wing man. His support gave unification to the side and helped others to play at their best.

Angelo Mercuri:“The Banker“ who always knew when the rate of his interest would generate the best return.

Karl Lindberg (Our Secretary):“The Heart“ loves this club and has put in long hours in administrative duties to the detriment of his golf. His support through thick and thin was instrumental in the teams toughness.

Mark Oglethorpe:“The Finisher“ what a Final series, with his best game in the Grand Final. Mark was the match winner that every side needs to be Premiers.

It was a great effort for Ken Brown’s side “Sainters and Sinners“ to climb from fourth to play in the Grand Final and lose by only 3 Pts. But in the end the BEST side for 2017 won.

The Winter Classic Cup and Denis Farrell Medal to our most consistent player will be presented to our winners at the Annual Presentation Night and Dinner on:

• Saturday Night 6.30pm 2nd December• Price $35.00 per head, all partners are welcome

A great way to support the club and congratulate our Champions for 2017.

It has been a pleasure for us to run our competition for the fourth year. We hope it brought another enjoyable dimension to the game of golf with our Great Club.

Regards, Andrew Blunden and Bill Dooley

Captain’s Report

Monday September 25th saw the Annual Brighton Golf Club vs Victorian Veterans Challenge event held at our club.

Yeah… So who Won?? WE DID!!

That’s Great!!…. Sure was…. and the pic of BGC Capt John McCreery with Vets Captain Harold Hayes is proof positive that this time WE Won again - after consecutive losses over recent years.

It was a lot of fun with the Vets finding our temporary course layout a bit of a challenge. Catering was up to the normal standard… excellent…. with our own David Heraud cooking up a storm.

So, a good time was had by all and now for next year. Remember if you are a BGC Vet and would like to be amongst this WINNING team talk to John McCreery.

Ladies Activities

The months of August and September have been pretty quiet for the Ladies Comp.

Although the weather has been mostly fine, but bitterly cold, attendances have been down on previous months. There is no doubt the longer 9 hole course is having its toll and many are off to seek some sun.

The August monthly medal winner was Robyn Napolitano with a great score of 67 net which was followed up with the win of the Captain’s Trophy. Congratulations! Robyn was so excited we heard about it all month Marie McGowan, Sue Bamberry, Robyn Napolitano and Julie Butcher (a new member) combined to win the Ambrose comp by a margin of 1 stroke. This was a close competition with many within striking distance.

The September medal was won by Sue Bamberry in a very small field .

August has also seen the loss of two great elder lady members, very sad for us and their families. Condolences are extended to all concerned.

The coming months will see the competition between Nepean and ourselves for the Shield and we hope for some good attendances for this competition. Keep the date free girls. At this stage the 11 Oct. We are hosting the day with lunch at the club after the event and we won last year so look forward to trying to retain the shield.

BGC Member Profiles

Jason Mills is one half of a brother duo of BGC members. Craig is the other half.

At the tender age of just 50yrs young Jason has been in logistics for almost 20yrs and has been a BGC member for the past 3yrs.

Jason became a member of our golf club simply because he was asked. Yes, Life Member Beau Roberts suggested he should join and he did. It was that simple.

Amongst his recent achievements Jason feels that playing with members like Kevin (Tubby) Pearce was very memorable. But seriously, he loves his golf, the camaraderie of the members and the warm and friendly banter with fellow club golfers.

Jason reckons that more (Saturday) lady members from our part of the world would be a valuable addition to an already great club and general environment. Now there’s a challenge if ever I saw one!!

We know Mal as the member volunteer who does our Saturday Tee Time booking sheet. But did you know this??

Although retired Malcolm keeps busy with gardening and partying. Mal has two sons and a daughter. In his work life he was the Finance Manager of a large dairy.

Like George Bernard Shaw Malcolm’s education was interrupted by his formal years of schooling. He learnt a lot by working and travelling widely in Europe, Africa, Nth America, Canada, Mexico and of late Asia. Lucky Starr eat your heart out!!

A BGC member for the past 16yrs, Mal joined because he was asked to and loves the friendships made. Achievements include a Hole in One, Member of Handicap Pennant winning team, Summer Shield winner, along with Medal of Medalist and a VGL Medal.

You might recognize the face but know little about the person.

Norm Martin is a retired Maintenance Dept Supervisor who worked for over 30 years with W A Deutsher. Married to Rose they have 2 children Karen and Steven.

A BGC member for 30+ years Norm originally joined to meet new friends. He has renewed his membership each year simply because he enjoys the company of fellow members (his new friends).

During his years with the BGC Norm has won Monthly Medals, VGL Medals and achieved a Hole in One. Norm most enjoys being with family and friends but he is also a keen caravan traveler. If he could change anything it would not be at the BGC but rather the state government.

Recent health issues have restricted Norm’s ability to play his beloved golf however he regularly comes into the clubhouse to meet and chat with his many friends.
