This week, with an oink-oink here and a moo-moo there, Tidbits takes a trip to the farm and looks in on all sorts of farmyard activities. The 1819 “Farmer’s Almanac” advised, “Think not that because it is winter, a farmer may lie idle. Busy, sir, busy! This is the word for all farmers at all times and seasons.” The farmer’s field received its name from the ancient Anglo-Saxons. When they were preparing to plant, it was necessary to first clear the heavily forested lands. Areas that had been cleared of trees were referred to as “felled,” hence the name “field.” A top-of-the-line steel beam plow could be purchased from the 1910 Sears & Roebuck catalogue for about $10. Their best wheelbarrow was $8, while a top-quali- ty 24-tooth hay rake retailed for $18.75. Cows don’t really have four stomachs, but rather one stomach with four compartments. The stomach muscles send food back into a cow’s mouth to be chewed and swallowed again. If a cow is “chewing her cud,” she is actually re-chewing food she already chewed before! Cows are ruminants, which refers to this type of stom- ach that sends food back to the mouth. turn the page for more!

TIDBITS® GOES

DOWN ON THE FARMby Kathy Wolfe

Ee-i-ee-i-oh! This week, with an oink-oink here and a moo-moo there, Tidbits takes a trip to the farm and looks in on all sorts of farmyard activities.• The 1819 “Farmer’s Almanac” advised, “Think not

that because it is winter, a farmer may lie idle. Busy, sir, busy! This is the word for all farmers at all times and seasons.”

• The farmer’s field received its name from the ancient Anglo-Saxons. When they were preparing to plant, it was necessary to first clear the heavily forested lands. Areas that had been cleared of trees were referred to as “felled,” hence the name “field.”• A top-of-the-line steel beam plow could be purchased from the 1910 Sears & Roebuck catalogue for about $10. DOWN ON THE FARM (continued):• Texas leads the Unites States in the number of beef cattle, while Wisconsin is the leader in dairy cattle. The country with the most cattle is India, where the cow is considered sacred.• The average dairy cow gives about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. That’s an annual output of about 1,600 gallons per cow. • Although we in North America drink mostly cow’s milk, worldwide, more people drink goat’s milk than cow’s. • Do you speak “chicken?” These feathered creatures have been the inspiration for all kinds of idioms in our language, such as “chicken-hearted” and “chicken-livered” to denote cowardliness. We “walk on eggshells” when we proceed cautiously. Our “nest egg” is money saved for the future. An “egghead” is overly intellectual, and a person is seen as a “good egg” or a “bad egg.” If you’ve done something that made you look foolish, you have “egg on your face.” We’ve all “run around like a chicken with its head cut off,” “counted our chickens before they’re hatched,” and been ad-vised not to “put all our eggs in one basket.” Many offices have a “pecking order,” and some men claim to have been “hen-pecked” by a “biddy.”• There are more chickens in the world than any other bird. That little red growth that hangs be-neath a chicken’s beak is called a wattle. It’s red because it has a rich supply of blood. • A female chicken less than a year old is known as a pullet, while a very young male is a cockerel. When a cockerel is 8 to 12 weeks old and weighs 2 or 3 pounds, he is referred to as a broiler.• The average baby pig weighs in at about 2.5 pounds (.93 kg), doubling its weight during its first week of life. Adult males can reach about 500 pounds (186 kg), with sows at 450 (168 kg). Most hogs are off to market at about seven months old. • Let’s not waste anything! A pig’s fat, skin, hair and glands are all used in manufacturing and in-cluded in products such as soap, shaving cream, explosives, fertilizer, glue and medicine, includ-ing insulin.• If you’re feeding the Embden, the Toulouse, Sebastopol or the American Buff, you’re a goose farmer. If you’re eating your Christmas goose, most likely it’s of the Embden variety.• The delicacy pate de foie gras is made from the livers of geese. In Europe, geese are forced to eat more food than normal to produce a large, fatty liver. But don’t try it in America … This method of feeding is illegal in the States.

• According to folklore, when sheep run back and forth, jump up and down, and fight as they frolic, it means a change of weather is on the way.

Legend further maintains that if oxen are licking their forefeet, hens are taking dust baths, or frogs are croaking more than usual, rain is forthcoming. A chicken standing on one leg denotes impending cold weather.

• Roquefort cheese is made from the milk of the French Larzac, or Roquefort, sheep. The fat content in sheep’s milk is much higher than that of cow’s milk.

• What’s for dinner? If you’re having moussaka, you’re eating a dish of lamb and eggplant. Kibbe on the menu denotes ground lamb.

• When a female horse and a male donkey mate, the result is a mule. An old proverb says: “Mules make a great fuss about their ancestors having been horses.”

• The most common duck raised in the United States is the White Pekin. The Pekin duck, which originated in China, was introduced to America in the 1870s.

• Although most folks eat turkey in November, the month of June has been dubbed National Tur-key Lovers’ Month. September is National Chicken Month, May is National Egg Month, and October is National Pork Month. For those non-meat lovers, October is also Vegetarian Awareness Month, and November is Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month. • Although we think of turkeys as gobblers, only the male toms actually gobble. The female hens make a clicking noise. A mature turkey will have about 3,500 feathers. • A horse’s teeth take up more space in its head than its brain. While a male horse will have 40 teeth, the female’s mouth contains only 36. • We generally mount a horse on its left side. This practice has been around since the days of ancient

FELINE LEUKEMIA VIRUS (FeLV) – Feline leukemia virus adversely affects the cat’s body in many ways. It is the most common cause of cancer in cats, it may cause various blood disorders and it may lead to a state of immune deficiency that hinders the cat’s ability to protect itself against other infections

You can protect your “best friend” - We offer an accurate and fast screening test for feline leukemia. We recommend outdoor cats with a negative test result be routinely vaccinated and retested annually for this deadly disease. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your cat from feline leukemia.

Cat Q & ACat Q & A

How to Feed a Cat – Part Two of Three

Thus far we covered the fact that the domestic cat has not evolved much from his desert-dwelling ancestors. The cat is dependent on animal flesh and organs for his nutritional requirements, and to this day remains a “dehydrated” species.

Very few of us have the time or ability to prepare a home-made diet for our cat. Since our pets don’t have the opportunity to hunt freely in a game rich area, the answer is the commercial diet. And today, the choices are almost endless, so let’s cut to the core of what’s good and what’s not good.

Canned food is better than dry food. The cat is a dehydrated species and there is a lot of moisture in canned cat food. Further, there are fewer calories per volume unit in canned food than in dry food. Your indoor cat can enjoy more food with less risk of obesity. Most cats (not all!) enjoy canned food, so another benefit is the bonding that takes place between you and your cat at feeding time. You are always associated with bringing the food, compared with a dry food bowl that just sits there available when you are not around. Feeding canned food makes it convenient to vary the diet, just as cats choose to do in the wild.

There is less vegetable in canned food. It is the closest approximation to the cat’s natural diet. In order to make a dry kibble, starch must be a major ingredient. This is the reason why ingredients like “corn” or “rice” are often near the top of the ingredient list on the dry food bag. Cats do not need starch.

Finally, there’s the myth that dry kibble cleans the cat’s teeth. With the exception of a couple of dry dental diets, which can help reduce tartar buildup but not prevent it, there is no truth to this myth. Dirty teeth result from poor mouth chemistry. The only way to deal with dirty teeth is to have them cleaned professionally.

There’s lots of quartz out there for gemstone enthusiasts!Rose quartz is a pale pink quartz that can range all the way from transparent to translu-cent often used for beads, carvings, and architectural purposes.Smoky quartz has a limited market because there is not much demand for brown gem-stones. Don’t mistake smoky quartz with smoky topaz. They are different.

Tiger's eye quartz has a lovely golden yellow color that reveals a small ray of light on the surface that resembles the feline eye of a tiger.

Rock crystal is the transparent, colorless variety of quartz long believed to be a com-pact form of ice. Many people believe that wearing quartz crystals benefits their health and spiritual well-being.Rutilated quartz and tourmalinated quartz is transparent rock crystal with golden needles of rutile arrayed in patterns inside it. Each pattern is different and some are beautiful!Chalcedonies is quartz formed not of one single crystal but a number of finely grained microcrystals.

Greeks, when the soldiers carried their weapons on their left side, making it difficult to mount on the horse’s right side. • How fast are farm animals? The maximum speed a pig can run is about 11 miles per hour (18 km/hr), while a chicken struts along at 9 miles per hour (14/km/hr). A wild turkey can reach a ground speed of 25 miles per hour (40 km/hr) as well as fly for short distances up to 55 mph (89 km/hr). Compare these with the world’s fastest animal, the cheetah, whose speed is about 70 mph (113 km/hr).

TIDBITS AND MUSIC:

JOHN DENVER

With 14 gold and eight platinum albums to his cred-it, John Denver was one of the most popular artists of the 1970s. Follow along as Tidbits looks into the life of this gentle, down-home singer. • Although John Denver was born in New Mexi-co, he didn’t stay there for long. Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. into a military family, his father’s Air Force flight instructor position took them from place to place. As a youngster in Arizona, he sang in the Tucson Boys Choir for two years, and at age 11, was given a guitar that had belonged to his grand-mother. • Denver enrolled in college at the Texas Techno-logical College in the school of architecture, but it didn’t take him long to realize that his future was in music. At age 20, he made the move to Los Angeles, and at 22, joined The Mitchell Trio and started his recording career. After three albums with the trio, he branched out on his own at age 26. His friends urged a name change, suggesting John Sommer-ville, but John loved Colorado so much, he opted to use its capital city for his stage surname.

When Investing, Don’t Stop at U.S. Border

In less than two weeks, United Na-tions Day will be celebrated. It’s an occasion to highlight and reflect on the work of the United Nations, whose mission is to promote under-standing and cooperation among the world’s countries. Of course, in an era of instantaneous communica-

tions and speedy global travel, we are all connected much more closely than ever before. And that’s certainly true in the financial markets, too, because as an investor, you’ve got a world full of opportunities.

Many people, however, still think the U.S. totally dominates the investment scene. But the fact is that U.S. stock mar-kets make up less than half of the total global stock mar-ket value, according to the Census Bureau. And that should come as no surprise to you when you consider many of the products you use on a daily basis, from the Hyundai (South Korea) you drove to work to the Nestle Crunch bar (parent company in Switzerland) you snacked on at lunch to the Sony television (Japan) you watch at night.

Not only are many strong companies based in the devel-oped countries, but some emerging markets — countries such as China, India, Brazil and Mexico that are charac-terized by younger, less mature economies — are growing rapidly, which may produce good investment opportunities. Keep in mind, though, that emerging markets do involve investment risks different from those of more developed countries. Securities may be less liquid and more volatile because economic structures are generally less diverse and mature.

And by investing internationally, you can gain another key benefit — improved diversification. If you only invested do-mestically, and a downturn hits us, your portfolio will likely take a hit. But, at any given time, international markets may perform quite differently than the U.S. market. Consequent-ly, if you expanded your investment horizon beyond U.S. borders, your foreign investments could be doing relative-ly well, even if your American investments were lagging. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee profits or protect against loss, though it may be able to help reduce the effects of volatility.

While you can gain some benefits by investing internation-ally, you’ll also need to consider the risks, such as political risk. For example, new governments can come in, national-ize companies, drastically change policies or rules affecting commerce, or take other actions that could have a big effect on your investments. You might also encounter currency risk — that is, changes in the value of the U.S. dollar, rela-tive to foreign currencies, could negatively affect the value of your investments. Another factor to consider is the dif-ference in accounting standards between the U.S. and other countries, a difference that can result in difficulty analyzing the true value and performance of foreign investments.

You can enhance your portfolio's diversification without in-vesting a lot abroad. If you are considering international investments you may want to limit the foreign exposure to no more than 20 to 25 percent of your overall portfolio, with the exact amount depending on your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. Also, given the more complex issues involved in international investing, you’ll want to consult with a professional financial advisor before taking action.

But once you’ve done your “due diligence,” don’t be afraid to launch your voyage to the world of international invest-ing. You might like what you see on your journey.

As a pastor, I have found it interesting over the years of working with people, that so many in the church believe that God has hidden his will from us and that only a very few ‘special’ people ever find it. Quite to the contrary, the will of God has not been hidden, in fact, we are exhorted to know the will of God for our lives. In fact, the Word tells us that we are ‘unwise’ if we do not discern His will for us. Ephesians 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. KJV So if the Lord himself through his Word exhorts us to know, then it must be possible for every child of God to know and understand God’s will for their life. How do we do this? Well, it begins with your Bible. The Bible is the inspired and living Word of God. It has been given to all men for all ages. We must understand that we are what it says we are, we can do what it says we can do, that we can have what it says we can have. It is as relevant today as it was when it was written. It is to be a part of our everyday lives. The secret to all this is becoming a doer of the Word. This is where the local church has a big role to play. As a pastor, my job is to make God’s Word come alive, make it understandable in a practical, everyday way, in which people can live a victorious, overcoming life in Him. And that is what you will find as a family member of Faith Life Fellowship. We are a group of people, from all backgrounds, all denominations, that come together weekly, to learn of Him, and to discover our worth and calling to this world that we live in. Please make it a point to come visit us on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. and also on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. Child care is provided at every service. This week we are excited to announce a very special guest speaker, Pastor John Cappetto. Pastor John and his wife Carla are the senior and founding pastors of Faith Heights Church in Grand Junction, Colorado. You may have recently seen Pastor John on TBN as a special guest of Jesse Duplantis. Pastor John will be speaking on Thursday evening, October 14th at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday morning, October 17th at 10:30 a.m. You do not want to miss this anointed man of God as he brings fresh revelation and insight of God’s Word. Please join us for these two outstanding events and of course bring a friend, who is in need of victory and breakthrough in their life, they will not be disappointed!

¥ On Oct. 25, 1861, the keel of the Union iron-clad Monitor is laid at Greenpoint, N.Y. The ship had an unusually low profile, rising from the wa-ter only 18 inches, and had a draft of less than 11 feet so it could operate in the shallow harbors and rivers of the South.

¥ On Oct. 27, 1904, the New York City subway opens. The line traveled 9.1 miles through 28 sta-tions. The subway opened to the general public that evening, and more than 100,000 people paid a nickel each to take their first ride under Man-hattan.

¥ On Oct. 28, 1922, the first-ever cross-country broadcast of a college football game is heard. Telephone lines carried a play-by-play of the matchup -- the Chicago Maroons versus the Prin-ceton Tigers -- from Chicago’s Stagg Field to ra-dio receivers up and down the East Coast.

¥ On Oct. 31, 1957, Toyota executives, hoping to saturate the American market, introduce their inexpensive Toyopet Crown sedans. The car was a flop. It could barely meet California’s stand-ards for roadworthiness, guzzled extraordinary amounts of gas and oil, and tended to shake vio-lently, overheat and stall with little warning.

¥ On Oct. 29, 1971, guitarist Duane Allman, lead-er of the Allman Brothers Band, is killed when he loses control of his motorcycle and drives into

the side of a flatbed truck in Macon, Ga. One year later, the band’s bassist died in a very similar ac-cident just a few blocks away.

¥ On Oct. 26, 1984, at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif., Dr. Leon-ard L. Bailey performs the first baboon-to-human heart transplant, replacing a 14-day-old infant girl’s defective heart with the healthy heart of a young baboon. The infant, “Baby Fae,” survived the op-eration, but died of heart failure after 20 days.

¥ On Oct. 30, 1991, the so-called perfect storm hits the North Atlantic. The fishing boat Andrea Gail and its six-member crew were lost in the storm. The disaster spawned the best-selling book “The Per-fect Storm” by Sebastian Junger and a blockbuster Hollywood movie of the same name.
