Cook This Tidbits uncovers some fascinating facts about cranberries, the tart, red berries that show up in vast quantities at stores this time of year. October is National Cranberry Month. If you live in or near one of the states where the little red fruits are grown, you’ve probably seen signs for festivals and celebrations. Cranberries are one of the few fruits that are actually native to North America. (Concord grapes and blueberries are as well.) Native Americans introduced the berries to the Pilgrims in the early colonies in the 1600s. Some tribes called them ibimi and sassamanash, meaning “bitter berry,” while others referred to them as atoqua, meaning “good fruit.” Colonists started calling them “crane-berry” because the plants resembled the neck, head and bill of a crane. The name was later shortened to cranberry. • Pilgrims quickly learned from Native Americans that cranberries had great health benefits. High levels of vitamin C in the fruit helped prevent scurvy, a disease that was prevalent with sailors. Native Americans made pemmicana, a healthy survival food, by mixing deer meat and mashed cranberries. Cranberries were also used as a natural dye for rugs, blankets and clothing and in medicinal poultices for wounds. turn the page for more!

TIDBITS® GOES

DOWN IN THE BOGby Patricia L. Cook

This Tidbits uncovers some fascinating facts about cranberries, the tart, red berries that show up in vast quantities at stores this time of year. • October is National Cranberry Month. If you live in or near one of the states where the little red fruits are grown, you’ve probably seen signs for festivals and celebrations. • Cranberries are one of the few fruits that are actually native to North America. CRANBERRIES (continued):• The first known recipe for cranberry sauce was in “The Pilgrim Cookbook” in 1633. Wild cranberries were probably on the table for the first Thanksgiving in 1621. Cranberries have been a traditional side dish for Thanksgiving meals in Canada and the United States since their discovery so many years ago. By the way, Thanksgiving Monday, the second Monday in October, is celebrated this week in Canada. In the United States, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November.• The first recorded cranberry cultivation was in 1816 in Dennis, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. Commercial harvesting began in Harwich, also on the Cape, in 1847. The cranberry industry is still a major source of income for Cape Cod today, totaling over $100 million annually. Nine hundred cranberry bogs taking up 14,000 acres (5,665.6 ha) are located in southeastern Massachusetts, with over half of them on Cape Cod.• So, what exactly is a bog? It is “an area of wet, marshy ground, largely consisting of accumulated decomposing plant material.” Bogs provide a fertile, moist habitat that is perfect for cranberries. • Many people think cranberries grow on top of the water, but it is only at harvest that the “sea of red” is evident, and the berries float. During harvest time, two different methods are used. For “wet” harvesting, bogs are flooded at night, and the next day, water reels, sometimes called “egg beaters,” beat the vines to loosen the berries. Since the berries are hollow, containing pockets of air, they float to the surface. The berries are then gathered and loaded into trucks. The wet-harvested berries are used for sauces, juices and other products. • Dry harvesting is used for berries sold fresh. For this type of harvest, the berries are combed off the vines by mechanical pickers and bagged carefully to prevent damage. • Approximately 5 percent of cranberries are sold fresh, while the other 95 percent are used for juices, sauces, “Craisins®” and more. Craisins® are sweetened, dried cranberries made by Ocean Spray that started hitting the shelves in 1993.

• Cranberry farms are mostly family owned operations that have been handed down for generations. Cranberries are grown commercially in five states: Wisconsin, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington and Oregon. They are also grown in Chile and several Canadian provinces, including Quebec, British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

• Canada’s oldest commercial cranberry farm is in Hebbville, Nova Scotia. Indian Garden Farm was started in the late 1800s and has been passed down through four generations by the family of William Webb.

What Is Zoonosis and Why You Should Care?Zoonosis refers to a parasite or other disease, like rabies, that can be passed from animals to humans. Members of your family can unknowingly pick up a zoonotic disease at the park, on a sidewalk, or even in their own backyard. Children are especially vulnerable to zoonotic disease, mostly because children play outside and sometimes have a tendency to put objects in their mouths.

Cat Specialist takes parasites and zoonotic disease transmission very seriously. We STRONGLY recommend annual parasite testing and a monthly prevention program. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your family and cat from zoonotic diseases.

• Wisconsin is the leading cranberry-producing state in the United States. The cranberry is the official state fruit; it is the number one fruit crop, both in acres planted and in its contribution to the state economy. The tart berries are grown in 18 counties in central and northern Wisconsin.

• Visitors to Wisconsin can enjoy five festivals associated with cranberries. In June, the Wisconsin Rapids Cranberry Blossom Festival displays the beauty of the cranberry blooms, dressed in pink. Manitowish Waters hosts the Cranberry Colorama in September, which includes harvest tours. Warrens, Stone Lake and Eagle River host Cranberry Festivals in late September or early October. The Warrens Festival is the largest and oldest of the festivals. (The festivals are all over for this year, but check the Internet for next year!)

• Wisconsin is home to the 50-mile (80-km) Cranberry Highway that traverses Wisconsin Rapids to Warrens and goes between Pittsville and Nekoosa. It goes through Cranmoor, the largest inland cranberry area in the world. The 29-mile (47-km) Cranberry Biking Trail is also in the area. • The beauty of cranberry bogs and marshes can be observed first in the blooms and later, when the ripe, red berries shine on the vines or float as they wait for harvest. Pink flowers develop in June and July with small, green fruit developing behind the flowers. The green changes to white before transforming to dark red in August and September. • While much cranberry history and many commercial operations are in the Northeast, Wisconsin and Eastern Canada, commercial growing in Washington State was started in the late 1800s. A visitor from Massachusetts noticed that the area was similar to Cape Cod when he found wild berries growing. Entrepreneurs purchased around 1,600 acres (647.5 ha) on the Long Beach, Washington, peninsula between 1872 and 1877 and began developing cranberry beds. They used vines brought over from the East Coast, and many pests caused problems in the new environment.• In the 1920s, scientist D.J. Crowley helped to solve the problems faced by cranberry production in the Pacific Northwest. The Cranberry Research Station was started and recommendations helped growers improve their crops. Today, the Pacific Coast Cranberry Research Foundation continues to support about 250 growers from British Columbia to Oregon. • Native Americans knew it many years ago, and now, research has proven that cranberries have many health benefits. They are a tasty, nutritious fruit that should be enjoyed year round.

WARNING: Don’t confuse natural zircon with cubic zirconia, the laboratory-grown diamond imitation. It is actually a famous gem of many colors, known for centuries for its luster and fire. The uninformed may look upon it as a cheap diamond because for years the most popular zircon was of the colorless variety, appearing at first glance to be a diamond. Today the most popular color is blue zircon, often used as an alternative birthstone for December. Zircon is also avail-able in green, dark red, yellow, brown, and orange. In the middle ages some believed that zircon relieved pain, prevented nightmares, ensured a deep and tranquil sleep, and brought wisdom, honor and riches to the wearer. If your zircon stone loses its luster, some believe it is a warning of danger. Some zircons do lose their luster, but it is because of over exposure to the sun and the luster can be recalled by a special heat treatment.

CELEBRITY EXTRABy Cindy Elavsky

PHOTO: Josh Hol-loway

Q: I am heartbroken that Fox has can-celed ÒAmericaÕs Most Wanted.Ó IÕve watched the show since the be-ginning, and I am so proud of all the good John Walsh and his crew have done to Òget those dirtbags off the streetsÓ! Is there an address for Fox that we can write to, hopefully to change their minds? -- Gertrude T., via e-mailA: I have good news for you, Gertrude. Lifetime Television recently announced that it has picked up John WalshÕs top crime-fighting show, which will return for its 25th season later this year. While there is not an exact airdate scheduled as of this writ-ing, keep an eye on this column for updates as I get them. Also, check online at www.celebrityextraon-line.com as December gets closer for my exclusive interview with John Walsh about the resurrection of ÒAMWÓ on Lifetime. IÕm sure weÕll also talk about all those ÒcreepsÓ and ÒslimeballsÓ that John will be trying to capture this upcoming season. ***Q: I loved the TV show ÒLostÓ and have been wondering about the man who played Sawyer. He is such a good actor. Do you have any info on what heÕs doing now? -- Janet R., Newark, OhioA: The handsome Josh Holloway, 42, has been keep-ing pretty busy since ÒLostÓ ended last year. You can see him again soon on the big screen in ÒMis-sion: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.Ó In the movie, which hits theaters on Dec. 21, Josh plays Trevor Hanaway, a member of Ethan HuntÕs (played by Tom Cruise) Mission Impossible force, along with Ving Rhames and Academy Award-nominee Jeremy Renner. ***Q: I really liked your idea a few months back of having Beth Littleford (of ÒCrazy Stupid LoveÓ) playing James SpaderÕs wife in ÒThe OfficeÓ this season, but now I hear Maura Tierney has been tapped for the part. Is that true? If so, what do you think about that? Ñ Holly T., via e-mailA: While Maura is no stranger to comedy -- she co-starred on ÒNews RadioÓ from 1995-99 -- she usually plays the straight (wo)man, which is exactly what James Spader needs, now that we are getting a better idea of what his character, Robert California, is like. So now I make this modest proposal: How about we cast Beth as RobertÕs Scranton mistress? Her offbeat and hilarious sense of humor, along with her improv skills and deadpan humor, would make her the perfect Òsecret loverÓ for the new boss, as well as an excellent foil for the rest of the cast. Are you listening, Paul Lieberstein and crew?***Q: I really like the reality/survival series, ÒThe Colony,Ó on the Discovery Channel. When will the third season start? -- Jane R., PhiladelphiaA: According to a Discovery Channel representa-tive, currently there are no plans to bring ÒThe Col-onyÓ back in 2011. IÕll keep checking and keep you posted as I learn any more details for 2012.

Why Do I Need X-Rays?

Radiographic, or X-ray, examinations provide your dentist with an important tool that shows the condition of your teeth, its roots, jaw place-ment and the overall composition of your facial bones. X-rays can help your dentist determine the presence or degree of periodontal (gum) disease, abscesses and many abnormal growths, such as cysts and tu-mors. X-rays also can show the exact location of impacted and unerupted teeth. They can pinpoint the location of cavi-ties and other signs of disease that may not be possible to de-tect through a visual examination. Your radiographic schedule is based on your dentist's assessment of your individual needs, including whether you're a new patient or a follow-up patient, adult or child. In most cases, new patients require a full set of mouth X-rays to evaluate oral health status, in-cluding any underlying signs of gum disease, and for future comparison. Follow-up patients may require X-rays to monitor their gum condition or their chance of tooth decay. Please see our ad on page 7 of Tidbits

ForecolosurePart 2: options Available to stop Foreclosure

There are several options available to you to stop foreclosure. The worst thing you can do when having trouble making house payments is doing nothing. The earlier you get started working with your lender will significantly increase your chances to stop foreclosure. Your options are:

loan Modification

Loan modification allows you to restructure your loan and reduce payments. You have to qualify for a loan modification through your lender. Each lender has a specific loan modification package that needs to be submitted for review and approval. If approved, the lender will present a new payment schedule to you for acceptance. If you accept the terms of the loan modification you will begin making new payments immediately.

sell Your Property

One option for homeowners with equity in their home is to sell the property. You first need to determine the propertys current value by having a Real Estate Agent prepare a free Comparable Market Analysis (CMA). Next, contact your lender to determine the current payoff on the mortgage. Once you know how much your house is worth and how much you owe, you can determine if you can sell your property. If you cant sell your property for a profit, the short sale is another option to sell your property and avoid foreclosure. The Short Sale and other options are described in the third and final part of this article.(Reference: http://www.shortsalecolorado.com/stop-foreclosure)

It's a Good Week to Think about Retirement Savings

You may not see it posted on your calendar, but Oct. 16 – 22 is Na-tional Save for Retirement Week. This annual event, endorsed by Congress, is designed to raise awareness about the importance of saving for retirement — so you may want to take some time this

week to review your own strategy for achieving the retire-ment lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

If you’re not convinced of the need for an event such as National Save for Retirement Week, just consider these statistics, taken from the Employee Benefit Research In-stitute’s 2011 Retirement Confidence Survey:

The percentage of workers not at all confident about hav-ing enough money for a comfortable retirement grew from 22 percent in 2010 to 27 percent — the highest level meas-ured in the 21 years of the Retirement Confidence Survey.56 percent of respondents say that the total value of their household’s savings and investments, excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit plans (i.e., traditional pension plans) is less than $25,000.Less than half of the respondents say they and/or their spouse have tried to calculate how much money they will need for a comfortable retirement. These numbers are obviously troubling — and they indi-cate that most of us probably need to put more thought and effort into our retirement savings. What can you do? Here are a few suggestions:

Determine how much you’ll need in retirement. Try to define the lifestyle you want during retirement. Will you travel the world or stay close to home? Will you work part time or spend your hours volunteering or pursuing hob-bies? Once you know what your retirement might look like, try to estimate how much it might cost. Identify your sources of retirement income. Take into account your IRA, 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, Social Security and other savings and investments. How much income will they provide? How much can you withdraw from these vehicles each year without depleting them?Calculate any retirement shortfall. Try to determine if your savings and investments will be enough to provide you with an income stream that’s adequate to meet your retirement needs. If it isn’t, develop an estimate of the size of the shortfall.Take steps to close savings “gap.” If it doesn’t look like you’ll have enough to meet your retirement needs, you may consider adjusting your savings and investment strategy. This may mean contributing more to your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts. Or, perhaps your investment mix may need to be reviewed to find a better balance growth potential with risk. Or you may need to take both of these steps. Monitor your progress. Once you’ve put your investment strategy into place, you’ll need to monitor your progress to make sure you’re on track toward achieving your re-tirement savings goals. Along the way, you may have to make adjustments, if there are changes in your objectives or your specific situation.Taking these types of action can be challenging, so you may want to work with a professional financial advisor who has the experiences and resources necessary to help you identify and work toward achieving your retirement goals. In any case, though, National Save for Retirement Week is a great time to consider your course of action.

JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOODBy Tony Rizzo

PHOTO: Daniel Radcliffe

NEW YORK -- I went to New York to a Broadway show and found out that Harry Potter can sing and dance! Daniel Radcliffe is singing and danc-ing his way into the hearts of Americans in ÒHow to Suc-ceed In Business Without Really TryingÓ until the end of the year, when Nick Jonas of The Jonas Brothers takes over. Former ÒNight CourtÓ and five-time Emmy win-ner John Larroquette won a Tony Award for the show. Anderson Cooper also is listed as a cast member. He narrates the book ÒHow to Succeed in BusinessÓ for RadcliffÕs character. IsnÕt CNN and a new talk show enough?Daniel worked hard to win over ÒHarry PotterÓ fans, but he works even harder to win over expe-rienced theatergoers ... and succeeds. Audiences love him!***While dining at OniealÕs on Grand Street, I was surprised to see 40 women arrive at once and found myself in the middle of the ÒSex and the CityÓ tour! People pay $44 to ride a bus around to New York locations where the show and movie were shot. In addition to OniealÕs, which dou-bled as Steve and AidenÕs bar, Scout, in three or four shows, they are taken to the site of Carrie and BigÕs wedding rehearsal dinner; The Pleas-ure Chest, where Charlotte bought her ÒrabbitÓ; and several Greenwich Village boutiques where the girls shopped, to name a few stops. Three gals from London found the tour online and said it was a must see for them -- even in a heavy rainstorm. Their favorite stop? ÒOniealÕs,” one said, “be-cause we drink Cosmos like the girls on the show did!Ó

I went to see ÒThe Addams Family,Ó which stars Brooke Shields as Morticia and ÒCheersÓ alum Roger Rees as Gomez Addams. The musical, based on characters in The New Yorker Magazine and TV series, gives the audience sight gags, hu-mor and a chance to enjoy Brooke Shields’ strong singing voice and flair for comedy. The show runs Ôtil New YearÕs Eve, then goes on tour. ItÕs great fun.

Also saw ÒBilly Elliot,Ó with songs by Elton John. Five boys rotate as Billy (in my performance Joseph Harrington played the title role). Audienc-es enthusiastically applaud throughout the show and give several standing ovations to whichever boy is playing Billy. The story is about a North-ern England coal minerÕs son who wants to be a ballet dancer. It starts out as a tragedy and ends up a feel-good show. It wonÕt be long before it becomes a favorite school play.

After riding clean, efficient subways and buying first-rate theater tickets near Times Square for half off, I can happily say, ÒI took a bite out of the Big Apple, and it tasted really good!Ó

“Jesus come into my life. Forgive me of all my sins. I ask You to cleanse my

heart, and make me a new person in You right now. I believe that You are the Son of God and that You died on the cross for me. Jesus, I want to thank You for loving me enough to die for me. I accept all that your shed blood bought for me on the cross, and I re-ceive you as my Savior and Lord. In Your name I pray. Amen.” When a person prays that prayer from their heart, the most amazing thing happens. You become a brand new person. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (New Living Translation) This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! God himself comes to live inside of you. You might look into the mirror and notice that you do not look any different. If you weighed 150 lbs before you got born again, you still weigh 150 lbs. If you had grey hair before you prayed you find you still have grey after you prayed. So what’s changed?

The key is understanding who you really are. You were created in the image and in the likeness of God him-self, and since God is a Spirit, the real you is a spirit too. You are a spirit, that has a soul, (the soul consists of your mind, your will, and your emotions), that lives in a physical body. Your physical body is needed while you are on this earth in order to move and live, but once you leave that body, you still continue to be the person you always were. A good example of this would be to visualize your hand with a glove on it. While you are wearing the glove, as you move your hand the glove seemingly has life to it, but take the glove off and throw it on the floor, it just lies there lifeless!

That is the exact same thing that happens to our physi-cal bodies, once your spirit leaves the body, the body becomes absolutely lifeless, and hence we die physi-cally. But you do not cease to exist; your spirit was created eternal so now since it does not have a body to live in any more, it has to go some place. And there are only two choices, like it or not. One is heaven and the other is hell. Yes both places are a reality; one is a place where there is no more tears, no more sorrow, no more death or destruction. The other is all that and more, more horrible than anyone could possibly think.

So how do we go to heaven? Jesus is THE only way to heaven. John 14:6 (NLT) Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. This is why pray-ing the salvation prayer I started this column with is so important. Have you prayed it yet?

¥ On Oct. 30, 1938, Orson Welles causes a nationwide panic with his broadcast of “War of the Worlds” -- a realistic radio drama-tization of a Martian invasion of Earth. The radio hoax included an announcement of a large meteor crash in New Jersey and the annihilation of 7,000 National Guardsmen.

¥ On Oct. 25, 1944, during the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, the Japa-nese deploy kamikaze suicide bombers against U.S. warships for the first time. More than 1,321 Japanese pilots crash-dived their planes into Allied warships during World War II.

¥ On Oct. 26, 1986, Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner lets an easy ground ball dribble between his legs and roll down the right-field line during the 10th inning of the sixth game of the World Series. The game was tied and, thanks to BucknerÕs error, the runner on third had time to score, winning the game for the Mets and forcing a tiebreaking seventh game -- which, in the final in-nings, the Mets also won.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Take time and think about these sayings.

I have since been visited by her sister, and now wish to withdraw that state-ment.. - Mark Twain <><> The secret of a good sermon is to have a good be-ginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible - George Burns <><> Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people only once a year. - Victor Borge <><> Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint. - Mark Twain <><> By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. - Socrates <><> I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury. - Groucho Marx <><> My wife has a slight impediment in her speech. Every now and then she stops to breathe. - Jimmy Durante <><> I have never hated a man enough to give his dia-monds back. - Zsa Zsa Gabor <><> Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar and fat. - Alex Levine <><> My luck is so bad that if I bought a cemetery, peo-ple would stop dying. - Rodney Dangerfield <><> Money can't buy you happiness ..... But it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery. - Spike Milligan <><> Until I was thirteen, I thought my name was SHUT UP . - Joe Namath <><> I don't feel old. I don't feel anything until noon. Then it's time for my nap. - Bob Hope <<> I never drink water because of the disgusting things that fish do in it.. - W. C. Fields <><> We could certainly slow the aging process down if it had to work its way through Congress. - Will Rogers <>
