This week, Tidbits has researched some of their early jobs — before the famous became famous. After being expelled from high school for riding his motorcycle through the halls, actor Marlon Brando was enrolled in military school, which resulted in another expulsion some months later. He went to work as a ditch digger, which he followed up with a position as an el- evator operator in a New York City department store. Next came a stint as a night watchman before he finally entered acting school. It’s hard to imagine James Bond as a milkman, but that was actor Sean Connery’s first job during his youth in Scotland. He went on to serve in the Royal Navy, fol- lowed up by positions as a lifeguard and ditch digger. Five-time Oscar winner Clint Eastwood held a num- ber of positions before making it big. He labored as a lumberjack, lifeguard, golf caddy, aircraft factory work- er, steel mill employee and gas station attendant. At one point, he was cleaning swimming pools by day and au- ditioning for bit parts by night. He was nearly 30 by the time he got his breakthrough part as Rowdy Yates in the CBS series “Rawhide.”

FORMER OCCUPATIONS (continued):• FOX news commentator Mike Huckabee has worn many hats over the course of his lifetime. As a young man, he was a Baptist minister and the youngest president ever of the Arkansas Southern State convention for that denomination. At 41, he was elected governor of Arkansas, becoming one of America’s youngest governors. Huckabee moved on to become a presidential candidate in the 2008 election and has written two books since that time. He is also a musician, playing the bass in his band Capitol Offense, and he performs regu-larly on his news magazine program. • Before her show-business success, Whoopi Goldberg had a job in a funeral parlor putting makeup on embalmed corpses. Goldberg enjoyed the job because her clients, “never complained about how they looked.” • That “wild and crazy guy” Steve Martin’s first job was selling concessions at Disneyland before he advanced to performing magic tricks, juggling and creating balloon animals at the park. He at-tended UCLA, majoring in philosophy and theater, before becoming a writer for variety entertainers such as Glen Campbell, the Smothers Brothers, Dick van Dyke and Sonny & Cher. Martin was in his mid-20s when he first branched out into stand-up comedy. He’s appeared in more than 50 movies and is an accomplished banjo player, as well as a best-selling author. • Ashton Kutcher’s father Larry was an employ-ee at an Iowa General Mills factory, so it figures Kutcher would have a job at the Cedar Rapids ce-real plant while pursuing a degree in biochemical engineering. While a student at the University of Iowa, he was recruited by a scout to enter a model-ing competition. After winning the state contest, he traveled to New York where he got his start in Calvin Klein ads. His first television role came along in 1998 on “That 70s Show.”• Michael Dell secured his first job at age 12, washing dishes in a Chinese restaurant. Dur-ing high school, he was selling subscriptions to the Houston Post. At 15, he made a choice that launched his destiny — He purchased his first computer and took it apart to see how it worked. At 19, as a pre-med student, he started up a side business “PCs Unlimited,” which upgraded cus-tomers’ computers. Within months, he had incor-porated as “Dell Computer Corporation.” In 1992, when Dell was 27, he was the youngest CEO with a company on Fortune magazine’s list of the Top 500 corporations. By 1996, the company was ex-periencing sales of $1 million a day from online sales. Today, he is ranked the 44th wealthiest per-son in the world, with a net worth of $14.6 billion.

What Is Zoonosis and Why You Should Care?Zoonosis refers to a parasite or other disease, like rabies, that can be passed from animals to humans. Members of your family can unknowingly pick up a zoonotic disease at the park, on a sidewalk, or even in their own backyard. Children are especially vulnerable to zoonotic disease, mostly because children play outside and sometimes have a tendency to put objects in their mouths.

Cat Specialist takes parasites and zoonotic disease transmission very seriously. We STRONGLY recommend annual parasite testing and a monthly prevention program. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your family and cat from zoonotic diseases.

The Deadly Seven Feline Viruses

What is a virus and how does it cause disease?

A virus is not a true living disease organism like a bacterium or fungus. It is a complex collection of genetic molecules, either DNA or RNA, encased in a protein coating. A virus is made up of chemical sequences that reproduce themselves rapidly in an animal or plant and it can cause disease. Medical researchers ascribe the words – “a smart virus”, “ability to adapt”, “a killer bug” giving the virus almost human characteristics, whereas the biochemist will ascribe chemical reactions and base pairings as a laboratory experiment devoid of all living character. They are both right.

A virus’s job is to make as many copies of itself as quickly as possible. Viruses enter the body and make large numbers of viral copies using the cat’s cells as a virus factory. Ultimately the infected cells burst, shedding large numbers of viral copies that infect other normal cells and then the process is repeated over and over again. Viral infections can spread throughout an animal’s body at a very rapid pace causing sickness or death.

A cat with a healthy immune system or who has been vaccinated against a specific virus, can stop the invasion and remain virus free. Poor immunity will cause the cat to become ill and many individuals die.

The Deadly Seven:

• (FPV) Feline Panleukopenia virus (feline distemper) is a highly contagious virus that can quickly kill cats that do not have a healthy stimulated immune system.

• (FHV) Feline Herpes virus is a highly contagious virus that causes severe upper respiratory distress – sneezing, troubled breathing and decreased appetite.

• (FCV) Feline Calici virus is a highly contagious virus that infects the nose, eyes and causes ulcers in the mouth.

• (RV) Rabies virus is that attacks the central nervous system and is inevitably fatal.

• (FeLV) Feline Leukemia virus directly or indirectly causes multiple diseases that are ultimately fatal.

• (FIV) Feline Immunodeficiency virus that weakens the immune system and eventually the cat is overcome by multiple diseases.

• Jack Nicholson, voted Class Clown by his Class of 1954, worked as a lifeguard before tak-ing a job as a messenger boy for the animation department at MGM studios. When it was dis-covered he had significant artistic ability, he was offered a job as an animator, which he turned down to pursue an acting career. This choice led to 12 Oscar nominations, with three wins. • While studying English and philosophy and doing a little acting at Wisconsin’s Ripon Col-lege, megastar Harrison Ford was expelled three days before graduation for failure to complete a required thesis. As a talented self-taught wood-worker, he was contracted to construct an out-building for Brazilian musician Sergio Mendez, and the word spread of Ford’s talents. He was on a construction job for a casting director when the gentleman helped him get a part in 1973’s “American Graffiti.” It was on to “Star Wars” in 1977, followed by the first of the Indiana Jones series, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981.

• Prior to “St. Elsewhere” and “Deal or No Deal” fame, Howie Mandel was a carpet sales-man. He was so good at it, he opened his own store and by age 24, owned several stores in the Toronto area. In his free time, he was trying his hand at stand-up comedy, and it soon blossomed into a new career. • Television journalist and legal commentator Nancy Grace is a former Georgia state prosecu-tor who made the decision to enter law school after the murder of her fiancé. She moved to “Court TV” from there, then on to CNN. Her first job, however, was working the candy coun-ter at the Macon Sears Roebuck store.

• The name of Madonna Louise Veronica Cic-coni is most often associated with her frequent-ly controversial singing career. But her money-earning career began at a Times Square Dunkin’ Donuts shop. Madonna arrived in New York at age 20 with $35 in her pocket and a lot of am-bition. Today, in addition to her music, she is a noted fashion designer, children’s book author, film director and producer.

• In 1986, little did the managers at Holly-wood’s El Pollo Loco restaurant know that their newest hire would go on to reign as People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” Brad Pitt’s first job in Hollywood was standing on the curb out front of the restaurant dressed in a chicken suit waving at customers and handing out fly-ers.

Tiger's eye quartz has a lovely golden yellow color that reveals a small ray of light on the surface that resembles the feline eye of a tiger.

Rock crystal is the transparent, colorless variety of quartz long believed to be a com-pact form of ice. Many people believe that wearing quartz crystals benefits their health and spiritual well-being.Rutilated quartz and tourmalinated quartz is transparent rock crystal with golden needles of rutile arrayed in patterns inside it. CELEBRITY EXTRABy Cindy Elavsky

PHOTO: Ann-Marie Johnson

Q: I really loved Ann-Marie John-son on “In the Heat of the Night.” What can I see her in now, and is she married with children? -- Virginia, C.A: I can’t even begin to list Ann-Marie’s film and TV credits, as there are way too many of them, but I can tell you the first series I remember seeing her in was “Dou-ble Trouble” back in 1984. Since then, she has been featured in “Hill Street Blues,” “I’m Gonne Get You Sucka,” “In Living Color,” “Melrose Place,” “Ally McBeal,” “The X-Files,” “JAG,” “Pursuit of Hap-pyness” and “NCIS.” Her most recent projects have been “Leverage” and “Fairly Legal.” Ann-Marie, 51, has been married to actor Martin Grey since 1996, and they have no children.***Q: I was watching an older movie called “Dracula III” with Rutger Hauer as Dracula, and I could have sworn the red-haired vampire also plays the assistant D.A. on “Law & Order: SVU.” Are they the same person? Also, was Mariska Hargitay, also of “SVU,” ever on the TV show “Freddy’s Nightmares”? -- Kevin B., Edmore, Mich.A: You are correct on both counts. Diane Neal did indeed play Elizabeth Blaine in the straight-to-vid-eo vampire movie “Dracula III,” starring alongside Rutger, Roy Schieder and Jason London. And back before Mariska was detective-extraordinaire Olivia Benson on “SVU,” she did indeed have a role in one of the “Freddy’s Nightmares” episodes, playing medical student Marsha, whom Freddy -- played by the always-scary Robert Englund -- harasses on Hal-loween, driving her to the brink of madness.***Q: The TV show “The Mentalist” shows Ashley Ga-ble as producer. Is she a daughter or granddaughter of Clark Gable? -- Juanita S., St. Clair Shores, Mich.A: Ashley Gable, who recently took over as execu-tive producer of the CBS crime drama, is not related to the iconic actor, known best for his role of Rhett Butler in “Gone With the Wind.” Clark had two chil-dren: a daughter with actress Loretta Young named Judy Lewis, who has a daughter named Maria, and a son with actress Kay Williams named John Clark Gable, who has a son named Clark James and daugh-ter named Hayley. Ashley Gable -- who, again, is no relation to Clark Gable -- is a prolific writer and pro-ducer, working on such shows as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Xena: Warrior Princess,” “Crossing Jor-dan” and “The Mentalist,” to name just a few.***Q: Will the horror series “The Walking Dead” be back for another season? -- Donna C., Warner, Okla.A: AMC has rewarded “The Walking Dead” with a 13-episode second season (up from a six-episode first season), which is scheduled to begin Sunday, Oct. 16, at 9 p.m. ET. For those unfamiliar with the critically acclaimed series, it is based on the comic-book series of the same name and centers on a group of people who’ve survived a zombie apocalypse and are searching across America for a new, safe home away from all the killer zombies.

ForecolosurePart 1: What Is Foreclosure?

Foreclosure is a process that allows a lender to recover the amount owed on a defaulted loan by selling or taking ownership of the property securing the loan. The foreclosure process begins when a borrower defaults on loan payments and the lender files a public default notice, called a Notice of Default. The foreclosure process can end in one of four ways:

1. The borrower reinstates the loan by paying off the default amount during a grace period called Pre-Foreclosure.

2. The borrower sells the property during the Pre-Foreclosure period and the borrower pays off the full amount of the loan and avoids having a foreclosure on her credit history.

3. The lender agrees to allow the borrower to sell the property during the Pre-foreclosure period for less than the full amount of the loan. This is called a short sale.

4. After the Pre-Foreclosure period, the property is sold at public auction to a third party or to the lender. When the lender buys the property, this is called repossession. Properties that are repossessed by the lender are known as bank-owned or REO (Real Estate Owned by the lender) properties.

(Reference: http://www.realtytrac.com/foreclosure/index.html)

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers programs that assist some qualifying homeowners who are at risk of foreclosure. More detailed information about HUD programs can be found at http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/topics/avoiding_foreclosure.

Holly – Expanded Duties Dental Assistant (E.D.D.A) I have been in dentistry for over 25 years. I start-ed back in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a den-tist who was in private practice. I started as his receptionist. When we were in between patients he would pull up a chair and do a little one on one instruction, it didn’t hurt that he taught at the Uni-versity of Pittsburgh as a Professor. I worked for him for over 7 years and then moved to Colorado. I moved to Colorado in 1989 just about the time my two nieces were starting school, and have been here for 23 years. I loved being involved in their lives. The youngest had just got married in May 2011. In 1995 after I had moved here from Pennsylvania, I was lucky enough to work with a Dentist who had seen promise and potential in me. He offered me an opportunity to enroll in the University of Colorado’s Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Program. Of course I took it!, and received my E.D.D.A Certification.

Organizing Your Finances Can Pay Off - In Many Ways A few years ago, the National As-sociation of Professional Organizers designated the first week of October as Get Organized Week. And while you may have misplaced your noti-fication of this event, it’s nonetheless a good time to see just how organ-ized you are in the important areas of

your life — such as your finances.

You can organize your finances in two basic ways: by keep-ing track of where your various accounts are located and by consolidating your assets. Let’s look at both these areas.

To begin with, you might think it’s no big deal to keep track of your financial accounts. After all, no one lets these accounts just slip away, does he? Actually, you might be surprised: At least $32 billion, and possibly much more, of “lost” property (savings, investments, retirement accounts and so on) are in the custody of state treasurers and other agencies, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Admin-istrators.

How do people misplace these funds? They might move from a town and forget to close a bank account. Or they might leave a job and not realize they’ve left behind money in a 401(k). However they do it, it happens — but you don’t want it to happen to you.

Fortunately, it’s not hard to keep tabs on your various ac-counts — you just need to make a list. Where do you keep your checking and savings accounts? Where are your invest-ments held? Do you have a retirement plan, such as a 401(k) with your current employer? How about any retirement plans with former employers? If you have Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), do you keep them with multiple provid-ers? By answering these questions, you can develop a com-prehensive list of what you own and where it’s located. Of course, it’s a good idea to update this list periodically — at least once a year — to reflect any changes in your ownership.

Knowing what you have will be helpful to you in evaluating your financial situation today. But if you want to help your-self make progress toward your goals for tomorrow, you’ll also want to consider another organizational technique: con-solidating your assets.

Specifically, if you have some stocks here, a couple of cer-tificates of deposits (CDs) there and some IRAs at still an-other place, you might consider consolidating them with one financial services provider. With all your investments in one place, you can possibly reduce the fees and paperwork asso-ciated with maintaining your accounts. And when you even-tually start taking withdrawals from your IRA and 401(k), you may find it easier to calculate these required distribu-tions if they’re coming from just one provider, rather than multiple sources.

But most importantly, when you consolidate your invest-ments with one provider, you’ll find it easier to follow a sin-gle, unified investment strategy. A qualified financial advi-sor can look at all your assets and determine if you’ve got redundancies in your holdings and if you need to increase your diversification. (Keep in mind, though, that diversifica-tion, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Furthermore, once a financial advisor knows your situation, he or she can recommend strategies that are appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon.

Get Organized Week lasts only seven days. But by using this time to begin organizing your finances, you could see ben-efits for years to come.

GOD IS NOT MAD AT YOU!!! Does that statement surprise you?

If you listen to religious circles, popular belief, and rumor you most likely have heard this kind of thing. I have heard all kinds of things that God will do to you, He will make you sick, He will keep you poor, He will cause bad things to happen in your life, He caused that storm to come, He caused that earthquake, He caused that famine, He caused that flood, you fill in the blank. But if you will read the Bible, you will find just the opposite, God is not mad at you at all. Isaiah 54:10 (New Living Translation)” For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.” This may be earth shaking news for some of you but it is true. This is such good news that many people have a hard time believing it. People think back on all the wrong things they have done, the bad things that have gone on in their lives, and think… how could God not be mad at me for all those things, surely He will do something about it! Well, you right about that in a way…God did do something about it. He sent His son Jesus Christ to the cross. When Jesus went to the cross, he took all your sins, He took all your sicknesses, His body became so marred and disfigured, that He didn’t even look like a human being. But this very event is the one which has freed you and me, the very event that brought us a covenant of peace, it freed us from the wrath of God forever. Isaiah 53:10-11 (New Living Translation) “But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands. 11 When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins”. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was enough to pay for your sins and mine. Sin now has no authority over you in any way! Jesus has paid the price and as far as God is concerned it is all over. All you have to do is accept this finished work, allow God to come into your life, come into your heart and change you forever. Let that Good News sink down deep inside of you, God is not mad at you, He loves you, He will always love you, and He sent His only son to die for you because of that love. That is awesome!

You Don’t Have Life Insurance

Because…

1. You’re not gonna die. It sounds good but it’s not true.2. You have free life insurance through work. Typically

it’s a group plan that would stay with the employer if you ever left your job…but you don’t have to worry about ever leaving your job, right?

3. You’re filthy stinking rich. Yup, you just hit the lotto. Congratulations.

4. You don’t like your kids. I’m sure the state won’t mind caring for them if something happens to you.

5. That life insurance agent is annoying. That’s why we have free donuts on Friday so you can put up with us.

6. You enjoy your cigarettes too much. As much as you like them, wouldn’t it be more relaxing knowing you’re not leaving family in a bad financial spot?

7. Your children are filthy stinking rich. So they just won the lotto right after you did…now let’s hope they remember how much you did for them.

8. Filling out paperwork is boring. After all, you need to get to the store to buy that lotto ticket.

Now that we know why you don’t have life insurance, maybe it’s time to find some reasons to get it. It’s the start of the year and there’s no better time than today. Give us a call or stop by our office to find the best policy that suits your needs. Don’t let a tragedy turn into a financial catastrophe. For as little as one night out at the movies, you could provide financial protection for your loved ones. Don’t delay, call us today!

¥ On Oct. 19, 1869, work begins on one of the most ambitious Western engineering projects of the day: a 4-mile-long tunnel through the solid rock of the Comstock Lode mining district in Nevada to divert water. The tunnel drained some 2 million gal-lons of water from the mines per year.

¥ On Oct. 23, 1925, John William Carson, who would become famous as the longtime host of the popular late-night TV pro-gram “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” is born in Corning, Iowa. Carson hosted “The Tonight Show” on NBC for 30 years, from 1962 to 1992.

¥ On Oct. 20, 1944, U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur wades ashore onto the Philippine island of Leyte, fulfilling his promise to re-turn to the area he was forced to flee in 1942 under orders from President Franklin Roosevelt. He had left behind 90,000 Ameri-can and Filipino troops, only one-third of whom survived to see his return.

¥ On Oct. 22, 1957, U.S. military personnel suffer their first casualties in Vietnam when 13 Americans are wounded in three terrorist bombings of Military Assistance Advisory Group and U.S. Information Service installations in Saigon. The rising tide of guerrilla activity in South Vietnam reached an estimated 30 terrorist incidents by the end of the year.

When the game ended, the field flooded with fans. They had a new hero: Reggie Jackson, now known as “Mr. October.”

¥ On Oct. 21, 1988, “Mystic Pizza,” a romantic comedy star-ring Julia Roberts, Annabeth Gish and Lili Taylor as three young women who work at a pizza parlor in Mystic, Conn., opens in theaters. Matt Damon, then 18, also made his big-screen debut in the film.

How to start the fight off right.... My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels.

She asked, ‘What’s on TV?’ I said, ‘Dust.’ And then the fight started... **************************************** My wife and I are watching “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, “Do you want to cuddle?” “No,” she answered. I then said, “Is that your final answer?” She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying, “Yes.” So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend.” And then the fight started.... **************************************** Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a terrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.” My loving wife of 10 years replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?” And that’s how the fight started... **************************************** I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah, well I couldn’t believe it.... He was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, “I AM NOT HAPPY!!!” So, I looked down at him and said, “Well, then which one are you?” And then the fight started..... **************************************** My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, ‘I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds.’ I bought her a scale. And then the fight started... **************************************** After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver’s license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, ‘Unbutton your shirt’. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, ‘That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me’ and she processed my Social Security application When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, ‘You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too.’ And then the fight started.... ****************************************
