The sun shone and the crowds flocked - more than 9,000 of them, on Saturday, November 7th, to celebrate the fifth Hororata Highland Games. They enjoyed watching 300 competitors take part, 102 stalls selling various wares, while 200 volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes and 350 bottles of Hororata whisky were sold. The Hororata Highland Games began out of a community desire to take charge of its own destiny after the Canterbury earthquakes and has grown in strength year by year. A new event, the Highland Spin, was enjoyed by spectators as they watched three teams compete to create a jersey in six hours, from freshly shorn wool. The winning team, the Gallus Wifies O’ Malvern, won the competition completing the
jersey in five hours eighteen minutes; they were judged on speed but equa l ly , on technique. The Oceania Heavyweight Championship was once again a highlight of the event with New Zealander, Ruben De JongRuben De JongRuben De JongRuben De Jong, taking out the title. The Hororata Highland Games Ama t eu r Me n ’ s H e a v y Championship was won by Gary Gary Gary Gary DuffyDuffyDuffyDuffy. Gary attended the Games in 2014 as a spectator and got involved in the Have A Go events; he did so well that he decided to step up to the competition this year. “Seeing what Gary has achieved
highlights what the Games is about. Giving people the opportunity to try something new with the Have A Go activities and then providing a p l a t f o rm wh i c h G ames attendees can enter,” said E v en t Manage r , C i n d y C i n d y C i n d y C i n d y DriscollDriscollDriscollDriscoll. This year we had the Deep South Inter schools’ competition which saw primary school teams compete in the Scottish Heavy athletics. Who knows some of these children might end up competing in the O c e a n i a H e a v y w e i g h t Championship in years to come,” Cindy added.
First placed team in the Deep South inter-schools competition where pupils competed in Scottish Heavy athletics was Hororata Primary School - L to R: Hamish Thornley, Tom Freeman, Will Cookson, and Ben Smith with a

Hororata Highland Games Dancing Champion was Ashleigh Ashleigh Ashleigh Ashleigh Vaughan Vaughan Vaughan Vaughan from Timaru. “It was great to see so many teams competing in the Southfuels Tug O’ War and the Duncan Cotterill Highland Challenge. This adds to the spectacle, but also allows a lot more people to participate in the competition side of the event.” Once again the massed bands marching at the Closing Ceremony was a fitting end to a wonderful day. The bands combined and marched into the Centre arena, saluted the Chieftain then performed a rousing medley including ‘Scotland the Brave.’ Chieftain, Alex BruceAlex BruceAlex BruceAlex Bruce, who travelled from Scotland for the event, commented, “I was impressed with how well organised the event was and by the number of people who a t t e n d e d ; w h i c h w a s considerably more than most Highland Games in Scotland. The Hororata Highland Games is most definitely authentic, paying tribute to many Scottish traditions, but I really enjoyed the new elements that have been introduced and the ‘Kiwi twist’ was very special. I was honoured to be involved in the event and would love to come back,” he concluded.
T he H i g h l a nd D an c i n g competition had the highest number of entries since the inception of the Games. Dancers competed in over thirty events with four Championships contested on the day. The

Serendipity Players opened on Thursday night, November 5th, with their first performance - a trilogy of one act plays by Nick Nick Nick Nick Warburton. Warburton. Warburton. Warburton. They follow an amateur drama group as they rehearse for their production of Hamlet. The audience enjoyed themselves thoroughly and laughed uncontrollably at the antics of the cast throughout their rehearsals, the backstage crew fiasco, along with the finale during the after-show party. The evening was hugely entertaining as the audience sat back and relaxed with their drinks and nibbles in the convivial surroundings. The hall
was set out with groups of chairs around tables which made the evening a relaxed affair. The next two nights followed the same form and

Darfield Library is soon to lose one of its long-serv ing Librarians. Fay McOscar Fay McOscar Fay McOscar Fay McOscar joined the Selwyn library team in March 2009, when Darfield Library was operating from the old building in McMillan Street. Fay recalls the hot summers and cold winters in that building, as well as the sound of the train that felt like it was heading through the walls! Moving to the new, light filled and spacious library on South Terrace in February 2011, has been a highlight, but what she
will remember most fondly is growing fr iendships with c u s t o m e r s , b u i l d i n g relationships with the young people of the community and working with a lovely team of library staff and volunteers. After 22 years working in libraries, she has seen the transition from manual to computerised systems, as well as the explosion in digital resources and eBooks. Fay commented that she will miss the customers and team at Darfield, but assures everyone
that she will be out and about in the community, and looks forward to some ‘mystery shopper’ visits to the Darfield Library. She is also looking forward to tending her country garden, volunteering in the community and taking care of her school aged granddaughter during the long summer holidays. Tuesday, November 3rd saw West Melton School come together for their annual, much-looked-forward-to pet day. Fortunately the rain held off, the weather brightened and the day ended warmer than expected. Plenty of construction was happening in the classrooms first thing, with a choice of act iv i t ies; sand saucer, decorated egg and 3D models. Imagination was running rife in the exhibition sections this year with four categories open for: baking, vege, flowers and technology. The animal section saw children bring in dogs of all shapes and sizes, along with sheep, goats,
calves and horses. There were even a range of smaller animals including fish, turtles, cats and chickens. An Agri-Kids competit ion rounded off the day and a wonderful time was had by all.

This month twenty members and friends of the Sheffield Garden Club had a wonderful day trip to Trott’s Garden and Conniston Garden in Ashburton. Although the weather had a wintery blast later in the day, it did not dampen the amazement that all experienced at such extensive exotic collections of mature trees and gardens at both of these huge properties. Amidst a maze of 650 flowering Rhododendrons sheltered by masses of exotic specimen trees, Trotts Garden gave all an appreciation of the planning and selection required, when this property was created in the mid 1980’s. Morning tea was enjoyed in the restored church and then we all walked through the herbaceous garden to the incredible knot garden and the picturesque lake. Alan Trott has recently produced a wonderful book and autographed copies were available for purchase; he has another pictorial due to be on sale prior to Christmas. It was an amazing garden leaving most with the desire to return to view, in the summer season. It was a privilege to be hosted by Conniston garden, as all were invited into the beautiful 1930’s restored homestead to enjoy lunch. After a talk on the history, by the owner Carol Williamson, there followed a walk through the huge forest of trees planted in the mid 1800’s and under planted with beautiful flowering Rhododendrons. What an experience! A huge lake with an island accessed by several arched bridges, was a focal point on the garden walk. Other points of interest were the beautifully restored country church shifted to this site from the rural area that the owner Donald Williamson’s family farm is located. As well, nestled about the garden are other restored buildings including, an old village store moved from central Ashburton, and a service station (village garage), these buildings contained a huge collection of antique memorabilia and many vintage cars. One particular car looking a bit like a mobile bicycle. In mint going order this a ‘Benz’ car - an exact copy of the very first car ever built, around 1887. Amidst the gardens and lake shore was a cute cottage and a restored piece of the original homestead, both of these furnished in character, vintage style and housing B & B guests. The present owners Donald and Carol Williamson have been there since 2002 and believe they are custodians of this amazing property. Their personal efforts have more than enhanced and restored this 19th century estate for the future, which they feel is their privilege to occupy and care for. All Club members where overwhelmed with the insight into these two majestic properties that have taken so many years to create. They were in admiration of the continuous efforts of the owners who lovingly and joyfully consider themselves custodians prepared to proudly share with the public. The Sheffield Garden Club meet monthly and look forward to their December visit to a property in the Oxford area.

The land is situated behind the students’ Target Wall and backs onto the school house garden fence. The gifted land was however, full of recently felled tree stumps, broom and gorse until Windwhistle contracting came to the rescue! They have cleared the site, ready for planting, with their twenty tonne digger. The students loved watching the machine in action and now the site is being prepared for a walking/bike track and will be a haven for native plants. Kris ‘Bus’ McLeish and supporters at the end of the 247km run - New Brighton Beach.
Kris McLeish Kris McLeish Kris McLeish Kris McLeish took on the epic challenge of running 247 kilometres in memory of his brother, Scott McLeishScott McLeishScott McLeishScott McLeish, who died tragically of a heart attack just over eighteen months ago. Scott was survived by six month old twins and his wife, Anna Anna Anna Anna McLeish. McLeish. McLeish. McLeish. Kris decided to run, straight from the heart, to raise money for Heart Foundation New Zealand. Kris set a target to raise $25,000 for the cause. This target was exceeded last week and with people still donating, it remains to be seen just how much Kris and his supporters have raised. Support came not only from family and around the country, but also from All Black, Brodie Rettalick, Brodie Rettalick, Brodie Rettalick, Brodie Rettalick, who sent Kris a pair of his track pants for luck, before the run. Kris was joined along the way by additional groups of runners and many will have seen them on the roads of Malvern, as well as passing through Darfield. Just as important as raising money for the Heart foundation, was Kris getting the message out there that everybody should be aware of their health. “The
one thing I ask of you is to take a look at your own health and get on top of it. Choose a bit of adversity and conquer it. Life sometimes isn't fair and will put you in situations you won't want to be in. If you set yourself challenges and knock them over you will be better equipped to handle what life may throw at you. Health is a perfect place to start.” The New Zealand Heart Foundation has their work cut out for them, with heart disease being the biggest killer in New Zealand. “My run had an end whereas their battle with heart disease does not. Hopefully with all our efforts as a group we can help them with their fight!”

Business properties showed the sharpest rise in property values between 2012 and 2015, with the capital value of these properties rising by an average of 40%. The value of farming properties also rose more than the average for Selwyn – with the capital value of farms rising by 28%. Residential property values rose by an average of 19%. Rateable property value changes varied across Selwyn townships – with values increasing most in Templeton and Southbridge (both 29%) and Darfield (26%). Townships that experienced less increase than the average residential increase of 19% for Selwyn were Rolleston and Leeston (both 16%), West Melton (15%), and Tai Tapu (15%). Around 27% of Selwyn District
Council rates are set based on the capital value of a property, with some rates also set based on a fixed amount per property (such as for library services). Some services such as building and resource consents are funded through user charges for services. Most property owners will find that the capital value of their property has increased, however this doesn’t indicate they should expect to see a s i gn i f i c an t i n c rease i n rates. Rates are set annually on July 1st, based on the amount of income the Council needs to provide services for residents. As the average increase in capital value for Selwyn was 21.8% (an average of all capital value changes for residential, rural and business land), property owners whose values increased more than the average can expect a higher than average rate increase from July 1st, 2016. Property owners whose capital value was less than the average for Selwyn can expect a lower than average rates change next year. Property owners should receive their letter with their updated property valuation in mid-November and they have the opportunity to object to the valuation if they choose to. The letter outlines how to make an
objection. Objections must be lodged by December 17th, 2015. “The rating value reflects the likely price a property would sell for on July 1st 2015, the effective date of the valuation, exclusive of moveable chattels such as c u r t a ins and appliances,” said Luke Van Den Luke Van Den Luke Van Den Luke Van Den BroekBroekBroekBroek, QV Rating Manager Canterbury. The last time the revaluation was carried out in Selwyn in 2012, 265 people - or around 1.3% of property owners - lodged objections to revised rateable values. Luke commented that QV uses a mass-appraisal process to ascertain new rating values. This involves taking relevant property sales in an area around July 1st, 2015 and establishing a market trend which is then applied to similar properties in that area. The mass-appraisal process is also supported by some valuation assessments of individual properties which are done every year as a result of building consents, subdivisions, sales inspections, objections and ratepayer requests to update rating values. Following th is, rat ing values are independently audited by the Office of the Valuer General.

This might have been the local David versus Goliath, and I don’t know who was which! It was an unusual game, whereby both innings were low scoring and slow batting, and yet Greendale won by 9 wickets. The margin flattered them. However, they certainly deserved to win. Played at Glentunnel, in perfect weather, although cooler later on. Sth. Malvern Sth. Malvern Sth. Malvern Sth. Malvern scored 102 102 102 102 runs ---- M. Pauling 38 runout. It was a superb performance by all five Greendale bowlers. Few loose balls were sent down, and the batsmen found it difficult to score runs freely. After 20 overs it was 59/2. T.
Dalley 4/15, H. Shipley 2/15, H. Pringle 2/26 - J. Clayton and N. Jenkins too, tied down the batsmen. Greendale 103/1 Greendale 103/1 Greendale 103/1 Greendale 103/1 ---- N. Jenkins 48 n.o. Nick Jenkins continues his good form, with bat and ball. He hit some terrific forcing shots. Try as they might, Sth. Malvern just
