Selwyn District Council is advising motorists to expect the unexpected while driving on rural roads. A new road safety campaign reminds drivers to slow down on rural roads and be ready to brake - especially near corners or road works, and around wandering stock or farm machinery such as tractors. Between 2010 and 2014, there were 164 crashes in Selwyn District where speed was a contributing factor, with 82 of these resulting in injuries. These included nine fatalities, 40 serious injuries and 69 minor injuries. Eighty-five per cent of these crashes occurred on open roads,

with the majority of motorists losing control when driving around a bend (65%), and 17% losing control on a straight road. In 74% of these crashes a single car was involved. Alcohol was also a contributing

factor in 28% of these crashes. Selwyn District Council’s Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning Ngaire Tinning Ngaire Tinning Ngaire Tinning commented that the faster motorists travel, the higher the risk of serious injury. “It is very important that people are aware that travelling too fast isn’t always travelling above the speed limit. Even if you have travelled the same route before, always expect that there could be things on the road that can cause an accident, such as wandering stock. “Many accidents are caused by motorists driving too fast for the conditions. Being aware of your surroundings and slowing down before going around a bend allows you time to stop if you need to,” Ngaire said. The ‘Expect the Unexpected’ campaign will run during October and November and includes an educational video, radio and newspaper advertising, plus giveaways of pens, along with packs of tissues containing messages to remind drivers to expect the unexpected on roads.

Large vehicles are one of many potential hazards motorists can encounter in Selwyn.

Tickets are selling fast - bookings can be made online at ticketek.co.nz or call the Isaac Theatre Royal box office. Ticketek has a special group booking offer - book ten tickets

Spring is here; time to get your run on. Before you hit the trails for a few kilometres on a sunny day, it is essential to do a few stretches. Stretching is an important component of any fitness routine. Stretching has many benefits, including increased flexibi l ity and i m p r o v e d m u s c u l a r coordination. Stretches can help improve your running performance and

prevent the aches and pains runners/ joggers commonly experience. Running, while good for you in many ways, does put stress on your body, especially the lower limbs and joints. The following short stretching routine before your run would definitely help in minimising the risk of running injury. Firstly, the most important

thing to remember is to only stretch the warm muscles. So, take a walk for five minutes (before your run). Then stop at a lamp post/bench/tree to d o y o u r h am s t r i n g , quadriceps, calf and Achilles stretches. While stretching, breathe deeply, hold each stretch for 30 seconds, and repeat on the opposite side. Perform each stretch twice.

For those that were looking forward to either attending or intended participating in the forthcoming Malvern Have a Go Day - it has been postponed. “For an event like this it is crucial to have a large number of both indoor and outdoor activities happening,” said Se lwyn D i s t r i c t Counc i l Recreation Advisor, Dave Dave Dave Dave

TippettTippettTippettTippett, “and although a number of people had committed time and resources to the event, for which I am hugely grateful, generally low participation numbers indicate the timing of the event may not have been quite right.” Dave added. “I am keen to reschedule on a date towards the end of

summer and focus on the promotion of winter sport and recreational activities of any shape and size.”

What’s the real risk to me? Recent statistics show that 28,000 people die every year - the causes however may surprise you. Medical conditions and illnesses accounted for 94%, (26,320). Of all deaths 65% (18,200) from heart disease, cancer and strokes. Cancer was the leading cause relating to 8,200 deaths. Of the 28,000 deaths, only 3% (800) were sudden (i.e. unexpected, undiagnosed or untreated conditions). About 400,000 income earners are disabled for at least three months every year. The cause - 16% accidents and 84% due to medical conditions and illnesses which ACC does not cover. Most of us don’t take the time to consider the effect this would have to ourselves, family and businesses. The ‘she’ll be right’, and ‘we can look at this tomorrow’ approach, often means we don’t take the time to look into ways of reducing this risk before an event occurs. It is commonly known that New Zealanders are under insured. Whilst more than half of families have life insurance, only 18% of people will have considered and have in place Trauma (Major Illness) insurance which provides funds whilst you’re alive. Do you have insurances to protect your lifestyle, and if so, would this meet your needs should a claim occur? A comprehensive review of your situation will provide you with the tools to make informed decisions going forward.

Selwyn District Council is reminding all rural property owners to check they have a rapid number displayed at their driveway entrance. Having a rapid number is essential as it gives every rural property an identifiable address to assist emergency services identify where people live. Rapid numbers also help identify ind iv idua l propert ies to couriers, and can also be given out to help friends and visitors find a property. Summer is the high-risk season for fires in Selwyn, especially in rural areas, so the Council is also encouraging people to ensure their driveways are wide enough to allow emergency vehicles in and out. One to four digit rapid numbers are found on blue plastic posts and are used to help identify the exact address of a rural property. Numbers are allocated

based on a system which measures the distance from the start of the road to the property’s driveway in units of 10. For example number 390 is 3,900 metres (or 3.9 km) from the start of the road. This nationwide system is known as the Rural Address Property Identification system or RAPID. Se lwyn Distr ict Counci l’s Emergency Management Officer Ryan O’Rourke Ryan O’Rourke Ryan O’Rourke Ryan O’Rourke said it is important for people to understand what a rapid number is and how it can be helpful in an emergency. “Rapid numbers are particularly useful for emergency services such as Police, Ambulance, Fire Department and Civil Defence, as they make it easier to find rural properties. It is a good idea to write the rapid number down close to the phone so it is easy to access in an emergency,” Ryan said. “It is also important to ensure that the driveway or yard entrance is wider than four by four metres to allow enough room for emergency vehicles like a fire tanker to access the property and turn around if they need to,” he added. “Property owners should also make sure their rapid number is clearly visible and keep any trees or plants around the number trimmed if needed.” Each blue post should show one to four digits, but many still show seven digits from when posts showed two sets of numbers - a three-digit ‘road ID

number’ followed by a four-digit ‘property ID number’. Properties that have a seven-digit number should remove or cover the top three digits (road ID number) as it can be confusing for emergency or postal services. Ryan commented that as many new families have recently moved to Selwyn not every rural property will have a rapid number. Any rural property that does not have a number should request one. Rapid numbers are not used in townships, and urban properties do not need a number. Rural property owners can request or replace a rural rapid number by filling out an online form at www.selwyn.govt.nz/rapidnumber.

Know your rapid number: Found on blue plastic posts outside rural properties and must be visible from the road.

Hampton Engineering’s original base is located at 90 High St, Southbridge and has been servicing the Ellesmere area for over 25 years. Due to local demand, the newest branch of Hampton Engineering is a base at 2253 Bealey Rd in Hororata. Intended to cut down on travelling mes and costs to their local client base, the Bealey Road branch will make for a much more efficient service. Hampton Engineering was recently purchased by Fred Dodson from Rangiora and Hororata local Phil Freeman. The company’s previous owner, Geoff Hampton is currently redeveloping the Challenge Service Staon in Darfield. Fred has a twenty year background in dairy, agricultural contracng and farm advisory, while Phil has a whopping thirty year’s experience in industrial, agricultural and structural engineering. This wealth of experience has given the pair and their staff, the skills to cater to a huge range of farming and industrial engineering requirements. Hampton Engineering currently employs eleven staff over both sites, giving them the people-power to cover all aspects of general agricultural engineering, specialising in dairy sheds, feed systems and the manufacture of the Hampton Rollermill. Also in their extensive repertoire is the manufacture of top gates, backing gates and specialty trailers. The Hororata branch currently employs two engineers, with a third joining them aOer Christmas. The workshop is open between 7:30am and 5pm weekdays and also offers a 24/7 callout service. The versale Hampton operaon includes five service vehicles; a small crane truck; and the flexibility of seven engineers and two trade assistants. This allows them to take on larger projects which makes Hampton Engineering a fast-acng, onsite, soluon provider, not to menon the usual engineering workshop facilies. With a service first atude and wealth of knowledge, Hampton’s aims to become the engineers of choice in the Malvern area, as well as further afield. They are already the preferred engineers for many clients ranging from Golden Bay to Invercargill. Hampton can also organise sub-contractors to assist with specialist jobs and are pleased to be able to offer the services of Ken James Impellors (Jet Boat Specialists), Selwyn Structural Steel and James Silver Smith (Milk Tesng, Waikato Agent).

injury crashes. Check www.drivesafe.org.nz to help educate visiting drivers when they’re planning their trip and also on arrival and during their journey. Changes are to be made to Google Maps travel times to be more reflective of New Zealand’s roads. Air New Zealand has created a ‘Driving in New Zealand’ app which is available on long-haul flights and it’s screening videos on driving in New Zealand, in a range of languages, on all international flights. Initiatives already rolled out include the Tourism Industry Association and Rental Vehicle Association’s Code of Practice for rental vehicle operators, which recommends a range of activities including enhanced checks when people are renting vehicles, and providing safety information in vehicles. Acting National Manager Road Pol ic ing, Inspector Pete Pete Pete Pete

McKennieMcKennieMcKennieMcKennie said Police are aware of the concerns regarding visit ing drivers, but the percentage of visiting drivers who have difficulties on New Zealand roads is very low and when they do crash it is normally for the same reasons as New Zealand drivers. “People make mistakes, whether they’re from New Zealand, or overseas. Our challenge with this project is to design the ‘system’ with our tourism partners to protect all road users so that if they make a mistake the chance of them being killed or seriously injured is signif icantly reduced,” commented the NZ Transport A g en c y ’ s J im H a r l a nd . “Part of that is about being responsible hosts and helping our visitors access information to make safe choices and then protecting them if they do make a mistake. That’s what the Visiting Drivers Project is all about.”

A range of organisations from transport and tourism organisations are coming together to ensure visitors drive safely.

A broad package of initiatives designed to improve the safety of visiting drivers, and those they share the road with, is well underway. The Visiting Drivers Project is de l i v e r i n g ro ad sa f e t y programmes aimed at each stage of a visitor’s holiday – and is being delivered by a c ross-sector partnersh ip between government and the t r a n spo r t a nd t o u r i sm industries. “There is no single solution, or single organisation that can improve road safety for visitors and others on the road. It takes a range of organisations working together across all parts of the system including roads and roadsides, speed, vehicles and road use,” said the NZ Transport Agency’s Southern Regional Director, Jim Harland. Jim Harland. Jim Harland. Jim Harland. The number of international visitors coming to New Zealand over the last ten years has increased by about thirty per cent, and is continuing to grow, with three million people visiting in the past twelve months. However the number of crashes involving overseas licence holders has stayed relatively constant or decreased over the last ten years. In 2014 overseas drivers were involved in, but not necessarily at fault in, sixteen fatal crashes and 536 injury crashes. In the same year there were 268 fatal crashes on New Zealand roads in total and more than 8,600

Waste reduction Waste reduction Waste reduction Waste reduction ---- "Is it okay to "Is it okay to "Is it okay to "Is it okay to put lids in with recycling?"put lids in with recycling?"put lids in with recycling?"put lids in with recycling?" The answer is NO - remove the lids and put them in the general rubbish. Plastic bottles with lids on can’t be crushed. "A loader can drive over a closed plastic bottle without even bursting it," according to Gavin Sole Gavin Sole Gavin Sole Gavin Sole (Solid Waste Manager for Selwyn District Council). Lids on plastic bottles must be removed manually by operators, so it is much more efficient to leave them off bottles in the recycling. Glass bottles with lids on smash up in the recycling plant, however the glass can remain trapped inside the lid and this must also be removed by hand. Bottles and jars, including wine and beer bottles, must be recycled without their lids on. It should also be remembered to clean any containers before putting them in the recycling bin. “These small actions on your part will reduce the cost, and increase the efficiency of our recycling system and help reduce waste going to landfill.” For more recycling info visit

Tips for reducing the amount of Tips for reducing the amount of Tips for reducing the amount of Tips for reducing the amount of organic waste:organic waste:organic waste:organic waste: • Be more aware of how to store

and use food more effectively. It starts with buying the correct quantity of food - buying in bulk only saves money if everything purchased, is consumed.

• Get label savvy - ‘use-by’ dates

are about food safety. As long as the food is stored correctly and isn’t opened, it should be safe to eat before its use-by date

• A ‘best before’ date indicates that

the product’s quality (freshness, texture and taste) will be reduced after that date. Check the product’s condition, if it looks okay it can usually be safely eaten shortly after the best before date

• Make a list of what’s needed

before going shopping. Check the freezer, refrigerator and pantry to avoid buying more of what’s already there, especially if it’s perishable

• Cook with what’s in stock and

reuse leftovers in a new dish for the next night’s meal or freeze them for later.

Forty of the br ightest secondary school science students have been selected to attend the inaugural event Powering Potential to be held in Wellington from December 13th to 16th and which will seek answers to some of New Zealand’s future problems and amongst them and the only student from the Canterbury Region is George Watson George Watson George Watson George Watson a pupil of Darfield High School. Organised by the Royal Society of New Zealand and supported by Freemasons New Zealand, Powering Potential will bring New Zealand’s most promising science students together to work out how to solve challenging issues facing the country. They will be supported and guided by scientists and mentors. The students will work in teams of three to five on problems that have been submitted by science organisations. They relate to a wide range of areas critical to New Zealand’s future, from the environment to health. The students will research, investigate and collaborate to solve the problems they have been given. They will also visit GNS Science to meet with scientists and learn about the skills they have used to solve science problems. “The students will need to think outside the square and use their creative capabilities to find solutions. At the end of the four days each team will present its findings at a special function,” said Andrew ClelandAndrew ClelandAndrew ClelandAndrew Cleland, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Each student was required to submit an in-depth application, which focussed on their own science research or outlined how they have contributed to an area of science in their school or community. The students were selected because they are serious about

going on to study science at a tertiary level and also have a passion and thirst for the world of science. Andrew added, “the calibre of the eighty students who applied was excellent and some tough decisions had to be made by the selection panel to get the number down to forty.” Grandmaster of Freemasons New Zealand John Litton John Litton John Litton John Litton added: “Freemasons New Zealand is absolutely delighted to be involved in Powering Potential in partnership with the Royal Society of New Zealand. “Education is a cornerstone of Freemasonry. Our organisation is all about self- improvement and having the courage to make changes for the benefit of all. Powering Potential is a perfect fit for us and we are excited about the next three years.” All costs for the students, including social activities, are covered by the Royal Society of New Zealand and Freemasons New Zealand.

Local vege garden enthusiast would like to start a

vegetable gardening group in the Malvern area

with like minded people.

This would be a social/casual group to share

knowledge/seedlings.

How this would be run will depend on interest.

It is with regret that organisers of the annual Darfield

Country Christmas in the Park advise that there will be no event

this year. It does however mean that performers have a whole year to perfect their acts and practise some great routines for

what will be a great 2016

Christmas in the Park

MALVERN CRICKET

Saturday October 24th

Oxford 145 Mitchell 32 Sth. Malvern 146/0 - This total was scored off 9.4 overs. J. Ferris 119 n.o M. Pauling 20 n.o Played in Glentunnel, in great cricket weather. Sth. Malvern won by 10 wkts. The Oxford innings, after a slow start, eventually gathered momentum. Two or three batsmen had good knocks, and played some excellent shots. The home bowling was good, and the wickets evenly distributed. M. Pauling’s figures were: 8 overs, and 3/5 runs. T. Rowlands (still at school) shows promise, with his leg-spin. James Ferris scored a century in 40 mins. He hit seven 6’s, and thirteen 4’s, and so scored 94 runs in boundaries. He hit 75 runs o f f 3 o v e r s , n o t consecutive, and his shots were - 644444, 6666.1, 46446. He has the uncanny ability to whack a good length ball, on stumps or to the off, to the on-side boundary. Again, I have never seen anything like it. Greendale (Home) 159/7 N. Jenkins 59 R. Wilson 32 D. Nightingale (still at school)-3/20 Weedons 160/6 R. Dalley 3/19 Weedons won by 4 wkts. Jenkins and Wilson shared in a 1st wkt partnership of 97 runs. A. Dalley achieved a run out with a direct hit. Regan Dalley told me that a good game was had by all.

Mainland Plumbing & Gas Ltd

A group of women were at a seminar on how to live in a

loving relaonship with their husband.

The women were asked, “How many of you love your husband?” All the women raised their hands.

Then they were asked, “When was the last me you told

your husband you loved him?” Some women answered

today, a few yesterday, and some couldn't remember.

The women were told to take out their cell phones and

text their husband: “I love you, sweetheart.” The women

were then instructed to exchange phones with another

person, and to read aloud the text message they received, in response. The replies were:

1. Who the hell is this?

2. Eh, mother of my children, are you sick or what?

3. Yeah, and I love you too. What's up with you?

4. What now? Did you crash the car again?

5. I don't understand what you mean?

6. What the heck did you do now?

7. Don't beat about the bush, just tell me how much you need?

8. Am I dreaming?

9. If you don't tell me who this message is actually for,

someone will die.

10. I thought we agreed you wouldn't drink during the

day.

11. Your mother is coming to stay with us, isn't she?
