Tidbits is taking a look at some familiar folks born dur-ing the month of May. MAY BABIES (continued):• You may remember South African runner Zola Budd who, at age 17, broke the women’s 5000 me-ter world record. She was especially noted for the fact that she ran barefoot. While competing at the 1984 Olympics in the 3000-meter race, Budd had three collisions with U.S. runner Mary Decker, with Decker falling, injuring her hip and withdrawing from the race. An international athletic jury found Budd innocent of any wrongdoing in the incident.• Not too many music fans are familiar with the name Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin, but millions have heard the music of Enya. Enya Brennan is an Anglicized approximation of how this Irish singer’s name is pronounced in her native Donegal dialect. As of 2009, her album sales stood at over 70 million. This multi-talented musician performs all the instruments and vocals in the majority of her songs and has sung in 10 different languages in her recordings. Her vocals are layered up to 80 times during recording to achieve her distinctive sound. If you’ve seen the movie “Fellowship of the Ring,” you’ve heard her composition “May It Be,” the film’s theme, a song for which she received an Oscar nomination. She is Ireland’s second-biggest musical artist. • If Enya is No. 2 in Ireland, who’s number one? That honor belongs to another May baby, Paul Da-vid Hewson, better known as Bono. Rolling Stone has ranked him as the 32nd greatest singer of all time, and his band U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Back in 1978, while still in high school, Hewson answered a note on the school bulletin board seeking musicians for a rock band that was written by drummer Larry Mullin, and U2 was born. As to why he is rarely seen with-out sunglasses, Bono states that his eyes are very sensitive to light and swell up and turn red. But that’s not the whole story. In his words: “It’s part vanity, it’s part privacy and part sensitivity.” . • Who hasn’t heard Bing Crosby croon “White Christmas” in his distinctive bass-baritone voice? Born in May, 1903, Crosby was a descendant of Mayflower passenger and Pilgrim spiritual leader William Brewster. At age six, Harry Lillis Crosby became a fan of “The Bingville Bugle,” a column in the Sunday edition of Spokane, Washington’s Spokesman-Review. A 15-year-old neighbor and fellow fan began calling him Bing and the nick-name stuck. Crosby had his first No. 1 hit at age 25. His success continued as 10 of 1931’s top 50 songs featured his voice, either solo or with oth-ers. He made 1,700 recordings, and 383 made the Top 30, and 41 were No. 1 on the charts. Known as an avid golfer, he was also part owner of baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates. • Little did Ken Jennings know when he stepped

Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season – Prevention is Key!
Please call 303.663.2287 (CATS) for more information or visit www.catspecialist.com
Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats!
The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

The Evolution of the ‘Dog/Cat Doctor’ into the Feline Specialist –
2011In 1996 the American Board of Veterinary Practice (ABVP) first recognized the Feline Specialty as a distinct specialty area. Currently there are 84 feline specialists in the United States and Canada. A long, rigorous certification process is required to become a species specialist – practice requirements, continuing education, indepth case studies, a three part written and practical examination. The passion and persistence to improve professional skills is the reason to become board certified in a feline specialty. Foremost, feline practitioners must love cats and they are driven to elevate the medical/surgical care of cats.Dr. James Olson, DVM, DABVP (Feline Specialty) has been recognized for a chapter written in the new edition of THE FELINE PATIENT - 2011, Breed Specific Diseases. The chapter catalogs current diseases that affect feline breeds and the new laboratory and genetic tests that have been developed to identify them. Dr. Olson has also written a chapter on Hyperthyroidism in FELINE MEDICAL SECRETS that details the hyperthyroid disease syndrome and treatment. Hyperthyroidism is the number one endrocrine disease affecting cats. Dr. Olson was one of the pioneers who develped the radio-iodine treatment model with a three day release after treatment. This has become a the standard for new I-131 facilities in the United States and Canada. Others areas of interest are the study and treatment of resistant urinary tract infections, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiomyopathy and kidney disease. In the pasts, dogs have received most of the money and research efforts, but currently the feline specialists and feline directed research groups (The Cornell Feline Health Center, The Morris Animal Foundation and The Winn Foundation) are directing major feline research efforts. Cats are the number one pet in the United States and they are becoming the healthiest pet in the country.Cat Specialist and Drs. James and (daughter) Jennifer Olson are among the few veterinarians in the country to have a feline specialty practice that tries to make a difference in cat care. Cat Specialist hosts fellow practitioners, student externs and technicians to further feline health concerns. We love cats!

When is mosquito season? Why is this impor-tant in veterinary medicine?
Have you ever seen a mosquito out when you wouldn't expect to see one? The reason this is im-portant for your cat or dog is mosquitoes transmit diseases such as heartworm disease. What hap-pens is that a mosquito feeds on an infected animal and with the blood meal also ingests the immature form of heartworm dis-ease circulating in the blood stream. This immature form is then injected into the next animal the mosquito feeds on; maybe your cat or dog. Most of the products on the market are de-signed to kill this immature form before it develops into an adult in the heart with the pet developing heart failure. The recommended course for preven-tion is to preform an annual test for the disease. The test is to ensure the pet is not infected with the adult. This is an important step as treating a pet infected with heartworm disease carries a risk, although it has been determined, in dogs, the pre-vention may be given without the test but is still not recommended. Take home thought; prevention is far more cost effective that treating. So exactly when is mosquito season and is your pet protected?

Acupuncture: Tiny Needles with a Big Purpose. Picture a little dachshund named Rachel weighing in at about 14 pounds. Her brother, Leonard, is a playful 140 pound mastiff. Even though Leonard is gentle, one day he leaps into the air with excitement and unintentionally lands on her back. Suddenly, Rachel can no longer bear weight on her back legs and radiographs show two intervertebral areas suspicious for disk herniation. Although Rachel is more comfortable on muscle relaxants and pain medication, her rear limbs seem to have a mind of their own. Rachel’s family decides to explore the healing potential of acupuncture before considering more advanced imaging and invasive surgical options. After one session of acupuncture, Rachel’s hind legs stop cross-crossing. After three sessions, her mobility is close to normal. Since that time, she’s never looked back - just up, to keep a closer eye on her brother.
In people, the National Institutes of Health recognizes the positive role acupuncture can play with respect to surgical and dental pain, nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy, treatment of headaches, myofascial and osteoarthritic pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Acupuncture is supported as an effective treatment modality for asthma, stroke, and even certain addictions.
Acupuncture has been practiced in other cultures for thousands of years more recently becoming incorporated into Western medicine in the 19th century. The term, acupuncture, comes from Latin words for “needle” and the act of “piercing.” Although classical acupuncture theory recognizes about 365 points, new points now total at approximately 2000 with a particular practitioner using approximately 100-200 points.
Acupuncture points are cutaneous areas supplied by high numbers of mast cells, lymphatics, nerve endings, and vessels. Each point has a specific function based on the body’s response. One acupuncture point used fairly commonly by veterinary practitioners during an extreme emergency such as cardiac arrest or shock, is the resuscitation point, Governing Vessel-26, which is located in the center of the upper lip. A sharp repetitive, “hen-pecking” technique is used in an effort to resuscitate an unresponsive patient.
In veterinary medicine, pain relief and neurological stimulation are two of the primary applications of acupuncture although acupuncture may be helpful for respiratory, gastrointestinal, dermatological, and many other conditions. An elderly cat or dog may not be nearly so creaky after several weekly sessions although some animals can take longer to respond. Client feedback is critical in evaluating the effect of acupuncture. Is Callie more willing to walk up the stairs? Does Charlie have an easier time rising after resting?
Since acupuncture visits usually involve treats and mild manipulation, most animals seem to look forward to their weekly sessions. Some dogs and cats even respond by falling asleep due to release of endorphins during treatment.
So the next time your Charlie, Callie, Rachel, or Leonard is facing a problem that isn’t responding to a more traditional approach, consider giving acupuncture a try. Just a few tiny needles in the right spot might put the spring back in their step or even get those feet moving down the right path to healing. Stacy McVicker, DVM

Hematite
Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666
This very common mineral consisting of iron oxide has a great array of colors from steel gray to almost black, brown to reddish brown, or red. The variety known as rainbow hematite exhibits colors similar to oil patches on water. The name hematite is derived from the Greek word haima-tites for blood. Hematite also occurs everywhere on the planet Mars where it is responsible for the planet's distinctive red color. It is mined in Australia, Brazil (rainbow variety), England, Mexico, the United States and Canada. It is the state mineral of Alabama, where approxi-mately 375 million tons were mined between l840 and 1975. When cut into thin plates, hema-tite is red and transparent; when polished it is very shiny. It is commonly used for ring stones and bead-necklaces. In ancient times people believed that large deposits of hematite formed on battlegrounds where injured soldiers bled and died. It was also believed to have healing properties, and had the ability to give strength to the body while lessen-ing life’s stresses. It was also thought to increase optimism and courage and reduce negativity. Sounds like everyone should be carrying a hematite stone in their pocket, don’t you think?

During his tenure as champi-on, the Utah software engineer earned $2,520,700, plus $2,000 for second place on the day of his de-feat and another $500,000 prize during the pro-gram’s Ultimate Tournament of Champions. Bar-bara Walters featured Jennings on her 2004 ABC News Special “The Ten Most Fascinating People of 2004.” In addition, Jennings chronicled his suc-cess in a 2006 book “Brainiac: Adventures in the Curious, Competitive, Compulsive World of Trivia Buffs.”• At age 24, Tina Fey became a writer at NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” and by 29, she was the head writer. The next year she joined the cast, where she remained six years until 2006. She is the creator of the TV series “30 Rock” and is the winner of seven Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes. Her daughter was born in 2005, and she returned to work just one month later, saying, “NBC has me under contract. The baby and I only have a verbal agreement.”
• Clint Eastwood turns 81 this May and seems to have no intention or retiring. He spent his early years in a series of jobs, including lifeguard, gro-cery clerk, forest firefighter and golf caddy. He was almost 30 before the turn in his career came along with the role of Rowdy Yates in television’s “Raw-hide,” a character he would play for the next six years. After starring in a string of Western movies, he moved on to the “Dirty Harry” films. When Sean Connery left the role of James Bond, it was offered to Eastwood, but he declined, stating that Bond should be played by a British actor. Eastwood has had a lifelong love of music and the piano and has composed the music for many of his films. • The family of Henry Kissinger fled the persecu-tion of Nazi Germany in 1938 and moved to New York when he was 15. After serving in the U.S. Army for three years (where he was a Bronze Star recipient), he went on to Harvard University, re-ceiving his Ph.D. in 1954. For the next 15 years, he was a member of Harvard’s faculty before entering the political world, serving as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford.
OVERCOMING THE ODDS:
EDWARD P. JONES
It’s hard to say where Edward P. Jones would be to-day if he hadn’t been fired from his job. He devoted his “down time” to writing a novel, a decision that changed his life. Tidbits gives you a glimpse into the timeline of this award-winning author. • It’s ironic that a New York Times bestselling au-thor would be raised by a single mother who couldn’t read or write. His father, a kitchen worker, abandoned the family when Jones was a preschooler. Growing up in poverty in Washington, D.C., he read a steady stream of comic books until he was 13, when he dis-covered novels. A good student, Jones spent much of his time in libraries and earned a scholarship to Massachusetts’ Holy Cross College. • Following his college graduation, Jones began writing a few short stories depicting life as he knew it in the D.C. area in the 1950s and 1960s. He was living with his terminally ill mother, and following her death, he was unemployed, suffering from de-pression and living in one of the city’s rescue mis-sions. • Jones took a job as a proofreader and columnist for Tax Notes, a journal publication for tax profes-sionals. On his days off, he continued to write. His
collection of short stories about Washington was fi-nally published in 1992, and “Lost in the City” was nominated for a National Book Award. But it was a full 10 years later before he began writing a novel in earnest. • Jones, an African-American, had a great inter-est in the history of slavery and began researching the subject. It especially fascinated him that there were free blacks who became slave owners during the time of the Civil War. He started a short story about it during his Tax Notes employment, but it was shelved for years, although he continued to ponder the idea. • In 2002, the staff at the tax journal was reduced, and after 19 years there, Jones was fired. He dug out the 12 pages of the slavery story he had begun and set a goal of writing five pages per day. With only a small savings account, two months’ severance pay and a plan, he started putting on paper the plot he
had been pondering for a decade. It took him just two-and-a-half months to complete it. He entitled it “The Known World” and dedicated it to his late mother. • In “The Known World,” published in 2003, Jones penned the story of a former Virginia slave who pur-chased freedom and became the owner of 33 slaves and landowner of 50 acres. The novel was declared the winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and became one of the choices for “The Today Show’s” Book Club series. Oprah Winfrey declared it “the best book I have read in 10 years.” • Edward Jones followed up his Pulitzer winner with a second collection of short stories, which also was nominated for various awards. Overcom-ing the odds, he has progressed from proofreader at Tax Notes to Pulitzer winner and an instructor of fic-tion writing at several universities, including George Washington University and Princeton.

Full Coverage Means I’m Covered For Everything…Doesn’t It?
It’s always a good idea to start with your policy declaration pages. It covers all the specifics of your policy. But we’ll look at some of the most common misconceptions in this article.
I have “full-coverage” so I’m covered-
Many people believe that an auto insurance policy automatically includes things like comprehensive coverage, a low deductible, coverage for possessions stored or transported in your car, protection against theft or damage of special custom add-ons, or even automatic rental car reimbursement after an accident. In truth, these are options that you must specifically choose, and purchase, for your auto insurance policy.
I Thought I Had Rental-Car Reimbursement
If you’ve been in an accident and your car is not drivable, you’ll most likely need a rental car. It’s easy to assume that an auto policy automatically covers the cost of renting a temporary replacement car.
However, this, too, is an option. Rental car reimbursement coverage must be specifically requested and added when you start your policy. You do have the option to add it at anytime.
I Thought I Wasn’t at Fault
Determining who’s at fault in any accident is neither a hasty, nor an arbitrary decision. To gain a clear, 360-degree view of what happened, the claim’s adjuster will interview everyone involved in the accident—especially you—before any decision is made about who’s at fault. After this careful process, if you’re found to be “at fault,” your insurance adjuster will be happy to go over the details with you so you can better understand the many perspectives involved.
I Wasn’t Driving my Car when it was Damaged. Why am I Being Held Responsible?
If you lend your car to a friend who happens to then get into an accident, it might seem easy to assume that your friend will be responsible for the damage. In truth, however, auto insurance is designed to protect you, your assets, and your car. Auto insurance is designed to help protect you in situations that involve your vehicle. Which is one of the reasons that auto coverage follows the car.
My Car was Totaled in an Accident, but the Amount of my Claim Settlement isn’t what I Paid for the Car. Why Didn’t I Receive Full Payment for my Vehicle?
If your vehicle is deemed a total-loss after an accident, in certain cases, it may be impossible to recoup the full cost of the car. Natural depreciation, market changes, and other factors are all calculated into your reimbursement fee. This is why the claim payment for a totaled car will not be the same as the amount you originally paid for the vehicle. The insurance company will normally pay you the fair market value of your car. In simplest form, what are similar cars in the same condition selling for in the open market.
If there are some other areas you might want to ask about, shoot us an email at [email protected]. We’re more than happy to answer any questions!

Own a Small Business? Con-sider These Retirement Plans For a variety of reasons, many peo-ple, particularly those in the baby boom generation, are consider-ing retiring later than they might have originally planned. If you’re in this group, you’ll want to take full advantage of those extra work-ing years by contributing as much
as you can to a retirement plan that can help you build resources, defer taxes and, ultimately, maximize income. And if you own a small business, you’ve got some attrac-tive plans from which to choose. Let’s look at two of these retirement plans — the “owner-only” 401(k) and the de-fined benefit plan.
If you have no employees other than your spouse or a part-ner, you can establish an “owner-only” 401(k), also known as an individual 401(k). This plan offers many of the same advantages of a traditional 401(k): a range of investment options, tax-deductible contributions and the opportunity for tax-deferred earnings growth. You may even be able to choose a Roth option for your 401(k), which allows you to make after-tax contributions that have the opportunity to grow tax free.
Your owner-only 401(k) contributions consist of two parts: salary deferral and profit sharing. In 2011, you can defer up to $16,500 of income, or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older. The amount of your profit-sharing contribution is based on your earnings. The sum of your employer contribution and your salary deferral contributions can’t exceed $49,000 in 2011 (or $54,500 if you’re 50 or older). Keep in mind that if your spouse is employed by your business, you each can contribute the maximum amount allowed.
You’ve got considerable flexibility in funding your owner-only 401(k). Both the salary deferral and the profit-sharing contributions are discretionary, so you can change them at any time based on your business’s profitability.
Now, let’s move on to the defined benefit plan, which might be appropriate for you if you are highly compen-sated and have no other employees. By establishing a defined benefit plan, you’ll be providing yourself with a monthly payment (or “benefit”) for life, beginning at the retirement age specified by your plan. In 2011, the yearly benefit limit is $195,000.
The amount you can contribute to your defined benefit plan each year is based on several variables, including your current age, your compensation level and your retire-ment age. But you’ll certainly be able to contribute large amounts: A defined benefit plan is the only retirement account that allows contributions in excess of the limits placed on 401(k)s and other defined contribution plans. Generally speaking, the closer you get to retirement, the larger your maximum yearly contributions will be. (This is because you’ll have fewer years left in which to fund your defined benefit.) And since your defined benefit contribu-tions are tax-deductible, you are, in effect, getting a big boost from the government to fund a generous retirement plan.
Here’s one more benefit to owner-only 401(k) and defined benefit plans: You can contribute to both of them at the same time. But before you choose either or both of them, consult with your tax and financial advisors. After all, you work hard to help provide for a comfortable retirement to-morrow — so you’ll want a retirement plan working hard for you today.

God Is Your Source! What is it that you need today, a new car, a place to live, food to eat, healing in your body? Whatever it is that you need, understand that God is your source. In fact the Bible tells us 2 Peter 1:3 (NLT)By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. God is our supplier and we simply need to receive it from Him by faith. All we have to do is believe and receive. Trouble is we live in a society that teaches us that we are able to meet all of our own needs without any help from God. And to try and prove that we have thrown Him out of our schools, out of our government, and out of our lives. A socialistic society is one in which the society attempts to meet all of its own needs apart from God. And that is where we are today, a democratic socialistic society. Well we have seen how well that worked in the communist countries haven’t we?No, we need to understand that all things we made by God and for God. And He wants to be your supplier, He wants to meet your need, He wants to meet your wants. The Apostle Paul understood this when he said Philippians 4:19 (NLT) And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Understand God is not limited by your natural reasoning, His hand is not waxed short. Things that look impossible to us are possible with Him! He has ways of getting what you need to you in ways you could never think of or never dream of. Ephesians 3:20 (NLT) Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.Stop putting God in a box, stop limiting Him by your little thinking and your little faith. God loves faith, faith pleases Him, God is a faith God, so stand up on the inside, take His Word to your heart, begin to believe it in your heart, confess it with your mouth and watch what He will do! To confess something means you agree with it. When you confess the Word of God, it means you are agreeing with what God says about you and what God says for you! And no matter what happens around you, you are not moved by what you see, what you hear, what you feel, no…you are moved only by the Word of God!Get into a Bible believing church this week, begin to fellowship with people of like mind who can encourage you and help you grow in the things of God. And begin to take Him at His word, because He is your supplier, He will meet every need in your life because Jesus has paid the price for me and for you!

¥ On May 23, 1701, at London’s Execution Dock, British priva-teer William Kidd, popularly known as Captain Kidd, is hanged for five charges of piracy and one charge of murdering a crew-man. A colorful Kidd legend included reports of lost buried treasure that fortune seekers have pursued for centuries.
¥ On May 24, 1883, after 14 years and 27 deaths while being constructed, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York is opened, the largest suspension bridge ever built to that date.

¥ On May 25, 1977, George Lucas’ blockbuster movie “Star Wars” opens in American theaters. With its groundbreaking special effects, “Star Wars” was soon a bona-fide pop culture phenomenon, spawning five more feature films, five TV series and an entire industry’s worth of comic books, toys and video games.
¥ On May 28, 1983, Irene Cara’s song “Flashdance (What a Feeling)”, from the “Flashdance” movie soundtrack, goes to the top of the U.S. pop charts. The song helped propel the relatively low-budget film to the No. 3 spot on the total box-office rev-enue list for the year.

Younger people sometime forget that seniors had a career before they retired......
WAL-MART GREETER Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem to get to work on time.Every day he was 5, 10, 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, clean-shaven, sharp-minded and a real credit to the company and obvi-ously demonstrating their "Older Person Friendly" policies. One day the boss called him into the office for a talk. "Charley, I have to tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job, but you're being late so often is quite bothersome." "Yes, I know boss, and I am working on it." "Well good, you are a team player. That's what I like to hear. It's odd though, you coming in late. I know you're retired from the Armed Forces.. What did they say if you came in late there?"
"They said, "Good morning, Admiral, can I get your coffee, sir?"
A Jack Daniels Fishing Story
I went fishing this morning, but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. "Frogs are good bass bait," I thought to myself.
Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.
Just then, I realized I had a problem, how was I going to release the snake without getting bit? So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels (that I car-ry for medicinal purposes in case of snakebite) and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. The snakes eyes rolled back and he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge at my foot. here was that same snake with two more frogs in his mouth.
