What Do Our Third Graders NEED TO KNOW to pass? The specific skills that students need in reading are described in the LAFS http://www.fldoe.org/pdf/lafs.pdf. The standards describe what Florida students should know and be able to do at each grade level. By the end of third grade, students are expected to be able to read independently. This means that they can read and understand words, sentences and paragraphs without help. In order to meet the minimum reading requirements for the end of third grade, students are asked to demonstrate at least a limited ability to determine the meaning of words using appropriate strategies, apply reading comprehension and literary analysis skills, and locate, interpret and organize information for a variety of purposes from grade-appropriate texts encompassing a range of complexity.

What Can I Do to Help My Third Grader?1. Read 20 - 30 minutes each day. Including the weekends. Are you already doing that? Try including more nonfiction books and poetry! 50% of the FSA test is nonfiction passages. 2. Make sure your child is getting iStation minutes. He/she can log on at home. Contact your teacher for details.3. Make sure that you build a daily routine. A

consistent bedtime, breakfast time and structured homework time will help your child on the testing days. 4. Remind your child to use their strategies. Mark in the passage. Reread. Read the questions more than once. Eliminate the wrong answers. Underline key words and vocabulary.

5th Grade News for January 2017

What has been exciting in 5th grade in December and January?

science!

If you ask every 5th grader I am sure they will say making and launching water bottle rockets on Jan. 18th. It was an exciting day for all! All classes went to the cafeteria to learn how to make the rockets. Then we all went outside to launch and record the data. The top winners (longest flight) are remaking their rockets for a 2nd launch on Monday, Jan. 23rd. The top 2 groups will advance to the county SECME competition in March. The 5th grade team would like to thank all of the parents who came and spent hours helping students build and launch.

On March 1, students will work in teams to make mousetrap cars for the 2nd competition. They will build and then launch their cars to see whose car can go the greatest distance. The top 2 winners of this competition will also be going to the county competition in March. Parents, if you can help, please let your  child’s  teacher  know.  

Every 5th grade student also completed a science fair project during 2nd quarter. Students are presenting their projects in class and the top projects in each class will be judged by outside judges for the school science fair awards.

reading and writing:

Students continue to work on their reading skills in all content areas and in their small groups. The writing FSA will be on Feb. 28th, so all students are busy writing, writing, and writing. Students must be able to read 3 articles and use textual evidence from these articles to address either an expository or persuasive prompt. Students may not COPY extensively from the articles. They need to restate the evidence in their own words and properly site the article.

math:

Classes are finishing chapter 5 on division of decimals and beginning operations with fractions. We are also beginning our FSA review and revisiting skills from previous chapters to keep the students on top of their skills. It is important for all students to continue to do Reflex math on a regular basis and achieve 100%  proficiency.  Let’s  get  those  green  lights  for  3  days  in  a  row!

kickball:

The  official  kickball  season  has  ended  with  Ms.  Brunt’s  Bobcats  in  1st place. We will be moving on to an all-star season in the near future.

field trips:

100 students enjoyed a great day at Kennedy Space Center in December.

50 students will be away on the Manatee trip from Feb. 1-3. We will continue to work in class while those students are away!

The next field trip for all students is March 16 to JA Biztown. Students will begin lessons in real life math (banking) and in how to operate a business to prepare for this trip. We will needs LOTS AND LOTS of parent  volunteers  for  this  field  trip.  Please  contact  your  child’s  teacher  to  volunteer.  

K Energy

Sound Energy is caused by vibrating matter and travels as a sound wave

1st Energy

Light Energy helps us to see. It travels as a wave and does not need to travel through matter.

2nd Energy

Heat Energy is due to the movement of

molecules. The faster they move the higher

their temperature.

3rd Energy

Light travels in a straight line, but it can be

reflected (bounced), refracted (bent), or

absorbed.

4th Observing and

describing some basic forms of energy,

including light, heat, sound, electrical, and the

energy of motion.

5th Hooking up

electromagnets and taking down the data of how many paperclips are

attracted, then plotting on a graph. More

What can my student work on at home to help with science? Watch Studyjams videos with your student (studyjams.com) go to the Science tab, click on Energy, Sound & Light. There are 5 videos to watch: Heat, Light, Sound,

Electricity & Light Absorption, Reflection and Refraction. Try to answer the follow up questions together after the video. Did you learn something new?

Review on Quizlet (quizlet.com) search bbofill and find the appropriate grade level. Practice the study sets that have to do with energy.
