    Dear Parents,

It has been a dramatic week on the weather front and I fervently hope for some signs of Spring before

    the end of term.

    Rats!

They fought the dogs and killed the cats,

And bit the babies in the cradles,

And ate the cheeses out of the vats,

And licked the soup from the cook’s own ladles.

This was not quite what happened when Freddie gave his highly

informative presentation on rats in assembly, but I confess to

have been somewhat perturbed by the sight of two rats scampering around in the foyer!

There is never a dull moment at Milbourne and the breadth and depth of the experiences on offer

    here still surprise me.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Future Schools event this evening.

marks). Henry comfortably earned his place in the Olympiad with a score of 109. Well done to

everyone concerned, to get a certificate when you are still officially too young to enter is a huge

achievement. Certificates will be handed out in assembly once they have arrived.

showcase their Art and IT submission at the Natural History Museum later this

month. All Prep pupils have contributed towards this achievement and ten pupils

will represent our school in the final. Mrs Bawden

  • House Pancake Races 2018

The whole school took part in our inaugural House Pancake Races on the last day of the half-term.

Chefs Salvador and Andy whipped up a batch of pretty indestructible pancakes, which were used in

the relay races and ultimate flip off contest. The local residents must have wondered what on earth

was going on as the children enthusiastically cheered on their houses. A great time was had by all!

The best Top Year flippers from each House took part in a head to head one minute flip as many as

you can pancakes, narrowly won by Ashwin Vishwanath from Amber House. However , when all the

races were also taken into account Blue House emerged victorious. Special mention must go to Tom

Twydell from Blue House who Mr Angus determined had the best technique overall.

Spelling Bee Finals – 28th February

Our annual Spelling Bee final took place on Wednesday 28th February, with representatives from each

Form taking their place in the finals. It was a hotly contested competition with Mr Angus calling the

words to be spelt. All the finalists were asked to write the word on their whiteboard and then sho w

their spelling to the audience. The winners were the ‘last ones standing’ in their age groups.

Congratulations to the winners: S. Bannister, A.Bose and C. Bulmer.

Some of the words that the finalists were asked to spell included: amnesty, cemetery, innocent,

    bouquet and mileage. Mrs Ashford

    Celebrating World Book Day 2018

Sadly our World Book Day celebrations were spoiled by the snow!

But luckily we have managed to re-schedule them for this week.

Pre-Prep World Book Day is being held today, Wednesday 7th March – Dress

    Up day and book swap.

Forms 1 and 2 World Book Dress Up Day will be held tomorrow, Thursday 8th

    March.

  • Thank you for supporting the Book Fair

A huge thank you to everyone who has bought books at

the travelling Book Fair over the past week. Thank you

also to Mrs Jordan, Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Groves and Mrs

Solanki for managing the book fair after school.

    Mrs Slocombe

    Child Bereavement UK Assembly

On 6th February Ruth Sanger from Child Bereavement UK

came to talk to children about the charity. Her presentation

was very gentle, age appropriate and informative. We were

all very impressed and proud of the children for asking

sensible and mature questions about the charity. We also

took the opportunity to present a cheque raised by Blue

House from the Christmas Jumpers and at the Carol

    Concert. Mrs Slocombe

Form 1 enjoy the Jungle Book

    Forms 1S, 1R, 2S and 2H went to Richmond Theatre on 7th

February to see the musical ‘The Jungle Book’. The

performance was able to bring the classic story to life. The

    children were on the

edge of their seat throughout the performance.

Le Café de Paris at Milbourne

  • Spoiled by our own French cook “du jour”, Amal, who prepared with his team a menu worthy of Louis

XIV’s banquet, Milbourne Lodge children were transported for a lunch to the Café de Paris!

From their seats they could admire the view of the Eiffel Tower while enjoying scrumptious authentic

French food: from tender beef bourguignon and confit duck salad to fennel and blue cheese tarte

tatin or garlicy snails for the more daring, they couldn’t believe their eyes.

But all the children agreed that the show stopper was the puddings buffet named after the famous

Parisian pâtisserie “La Pâtisserie des Rêves”. Tables crumbled under strawberry mille-feuilles gâteaux,

tartes au citron, profiteroles and even chocolate éclairs.

One word or maybe two….: MERCI and ENCORE! Madame Claude

REMINDER - Future Schools Evening – Wednesday 7th March at 7pm

Our biennial Future Schools Evening will take place on Wednesday, 7th March at 7pm in the Church of

the Holy Name, Hall. We have invited parents in Forms1, 2 and 3 to this event however, if you are in

another year group and would like to attend please feel free to do so.

The tone for the evening is very much an informal one, offering you the opportunity to talk to staff

involved with admissions and gather information from the Senior Schools that you may be

considering in the future. The schools that have confirmed attendance are as follows:

  • Form 4 visit the Emirates Aviation Experience in London

Form 4 enjoyed an excellent day out in London yesterday to visit the Emirates Aviation Experience in

North Greenwich. We made our way there via the train and tube, with the pupils keen to emulate the

other commuters on the train and tube by reading the newspapers. The children had an opportunity

to explore the centre, take part in a workshop on sustainability in the travel and tourism industry,

learnt how jet engines work, got to experience the safety demonstration on a plane, learnt how

baggage moves around a big airport and learn more about the smells encountered in Duba i by the

passengers and aircrew at the airport. Oh, and they also got to fly a plane! Whilst some have their

heart set on a future career as a pilot there were quite a few that I would never want to get in a plane

with as they did find landing smoothly quite challenging – luckily it was just a simulator and no real

buildings were demolished! We made our way back to Waterloo via the river bus, on which Abhay

sketched the sights we passed on a spare napkin! All in all a great experience for the pupils, and who

knows, maybe one day they will be your pilot as you travel around the world!

  • Celebrating Literacy Week in the Pre-Prep

    Dear Parents,

The snow added to an already exciting and eventful week in the Pre-Prep. Literacy has been our focus

and the children have thoroughly enjoyed participating in a variety of activities. These ranged from a

Spellathon and Pet Poetry to a journey into Africa with Kwame in the midst of the snow! Whilst we

have done our best to carry on regardless it has been necessary to move some events to this week.

We have postponed World Book Day to Wednesday 7th March and we ask that the children come to

school dressed in their wonderful costumes on this day. The Book Swap will also take place on

Wednesday so please ensure your child brings in a pre-owned book ready to swap.

Prizes for the Literacy Week competitions and challenges will be awarded in our Celebration Assembly

    on Friday.

Thank you to Mrs Franklin-Mitchell for organising an action packed week, full of challenges and

opportunities for the children to develop and deepen their appreciation for literacy. We look forward

to concluding our Literacy focus this week with our Book Swap and World Book Day celebrations.

I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable weekend in the snow.

    Best wishes,

    Mrs Elmer

    Head of Pre-Prep

    African Storytelling and Drumming

The snow did not prevent Kwame from African Activities, sharing his

storytelling expertise with all at Milbourne Lodge on Thursday. The children

experienced the rich African culture and were thoroughly entertained, taking

part in African storytelling and drumming workshops. They were able to

experiment with the drums using different beats and rhythms for each animal

in the story. We also took part in a traditional African dance called ‘Waka

Waka’. Kwame fully engaged the children's imagination and gave them an

uplifting day to remember on this somewhat cold and snowy day.

    Mrs Franklin-Mitchell

  • The Beauty of Poetry!

Adjectives, alliteration, similes and metaphors were tripping off the children’s tongues (and the end of

their sharpened pencils) when PP1 and PP2 set about writing their own poems about one of their

favourite topics: animals. All of their work will be sent into a national poetry competition and may

even be shortlisted for publishing by ‘Young Writers‘. All our budding poets put Tennyson and Blake

to shame as they truly excelled at this creative task. We have chosen a few to share with you here.

    PP1 visit the Lightbox

As part of Literacy week, on Tuesday, Year 1 enjoyed an exciting trip to The Lightbox in Woking. The

day started with an informative talk about Tudor times in Woking through exploring artefacts from

Woking Palace. It gave the children the opportunity to share their knowledge about Tudor houses and

the differences between rich and poor families whilst deepening their understanding about this

interesting period in history. By far the most exciting part for the children was exploring the fancy

dress rail and its array of Royal cloaks and dresses. The workshop culminated in the children

producing a personal 'coat of arms' badge using shrink wrap, which included 4 of their favourite

    things.

The day ended with a story-telling workshop and tour around the sculpture and paintings galleries.

The children were encouraged to observe the artworks and create an imaginative story. Back in the

art room, inspired by the fantastic works of art in the museum, the children developed ideas for their

characters and brought them to life in the form of puppets. The thoughtful creations included robots,

    knights, Kings, Queens and slaves.

All in all, the trip was a success and the children thoroughly enjoyed the creative activities . Many

thanks to the parent helpers who attended for your strong support throughout the day.

    U9 Milbourne Rugby Tournament – Monday 5th March 2018

A total of 9 schools attended the tournament on Monday including: Claremont, St George's Windsor,

Lanesborough, Northcote Lodge, Newland House, Aberdour, Sunningdale, Downsend

The U9A rugby team played Downsend and Sunningdale School in their group games. Milbourne

Lodge were able to set the bar high in their first game of the afternoon against a resilient Sunningdale

School. Through direct running and strength, Milbourne were able to pierce through their defence to

    secure a victory.

Milbourne then played Downsend which would become a tough contest. Both sides exchanged great

attacking phases of play throughout the game. However, Downsend became the eventual winners.

Through to the final stages of the tournament. Milbourne then faced St

George's Windsor and Northcote Lodge. After the unfortunate loss in

the group stage, Milbourne were hungry to get back on track. However,

Milbourne were put to the test and were unable to translate their hard

work and effort into a victory.

I give credit to all of the boys, for their resilience and determination

against strong opposition. As games go by, the group continue to

solidify their bond and cohesion. This group of players have great

potential and I look forward to seeing them grow as rugby players.

Furthermore, a congratulations to Theo G for being awarded a medal

for endeavour and Philip A for being awarded the 'man of the

    tournament'.

    Mr Callum Edwards

    U10 Team Report

As we approach two thirds of the way through term, I am delighted to report significant rugby

development throughout this age group. The only negative influence has been that of the weather,

which has seen the cancellation of a number of fixtures.

  • The A team have played 12 matches in fixtures & festivals, winning 10 of these & drawing one. The

single reverse (10-15) came courtesy of a last minute try against Northcote Lodge and a cursory

glance at their results confirm them to be one of the top teams in the South of England, as indeed are

    we.

What is evident with our A's and often commented on by spectators & opponents alike, is that we

play an open, expansive game, with all players demonstrating vision & skill. This will benefit not only

Milbourne Lodge as the team moves up the school but the boys themselves throughout their

hopefully long participation in the game.

A very welcome consequence of the success of the A team has been the galvanising effect it has had

on the other teams. The B team have improved dramatically in the last few weeks & this was

illustrated at the recent Aberdour School Festival, where they won all their matches. Ditto the C team,

who demonstrated their progression with a comprehensive victory over Newland House in their last

    match. Mr Smalley

    U11C v Northcote Lodge

This was a very close game which, due to the boys improved passing skills we managed to win 8 - 7.

    There were a number of stand-out performances from; T Brocklebank, H Tan and J Le-Men (2 tries

each), F Groves and a guest try. The team was ably captained by T Ewen, who made some very

intelligent passes to get the ball away from our try line. The highlight moment was when H Tan ran

and scored a great try, only for it not to be given, as he had managed to score on the pitch opposite!

The area the boys need to work on is tackling as there were a number of wayward tackles. Overall a

good performance well done! Mr Drummond

    U9A/B Rugby Festival at Aberdour

The U9's competed in a Rugby festival at Aberdour last week and played 6 matches against other

schools. The boys played very well against some tough opposition and in extremely cold weather. By

the end of the festival we had won 1, lost 1 and drawn 3. There were some great performances

particularly from A Durbar who was the main scorer of our tries and B Duke who also ran in 3 tries in

our last game. J McNally and O Scott Holland made a number of great tackles throughout the festival.

The boys should be very pleased with their efforts and the way that they conducted themselves on the

    games field. Mr Drummond

    Hockey

    Juniors v Chinthurst

Congratulations to the Junior girls who played Chinthurst ultimately winning 1-0. The temperature was

freezing but the girls simply pulled up their socks and ran on to the pitch with the usual Milbourne

spirit. The girls were keen to keep the ball down Milbourne's attacking end of the pitch whilst Anna

Wang defended admirably. Well done to all the girls who gave 100% effort to their match and to Anna

Wang who was awarded Girl of the Game. Miss Slatter

    Juniors v St Andrew’s

Milbourne Juniors looked to continue their undefeated start to the hockey season against a strong St

Andrew’s side. Both teams were quick off the marks, looking to take an early lead. Anna Wang and

Eloise Newman both made some crucial tackles and kept the St Andrew’s attack at bay. Whilst Evie

Ensor and Elsie Anderson worked tirelessly in attack, with Evie coming close twice within the first few

minutes of the game. St Andrew’s were first to find the back of the net, thanks to a quick counter

attack, taking a 1-0 lead into half-time. However, the Milbourne girls were not going to allow their

undefeated record to slip away so easily and a change of tactics saw Anna and Lilian Ye take on more

commanding roles in midfield, putting the St Andrew’s defence under immediate pressur e. After her

earlier near misses Evie was not going to let another opportunity pass her by and battled to gain

possession and pulling the scores back level. After much debate and discussion Evie was awarded girl

  • of the game for her determination in front of goal.

    Miss Watson

Middles and Seniors v St Andrew’s

Both the middle and senior girls ventured to St Andrew’s, braving the cold to face some tough

opposition. The senior girls were up first, with both teams getting early shots on target. Olivia Marshall

put in some early saves to keep the St Andrew’s attack at bay. However, a driving run down the wing

by St Andrew’s caught the Milbourne defence out and St Andrew’s took a 1-0 lead into half time.

Milbourne did not let their heads drop with Lucie Jordan linking up with Helena Ingram and Jeong Lee

in midfield to play Ellie Bennett into space, who brought the scores back level. Rosie Walker and Sonja

Thurow made several crucial tackles and showed excellent composure in defence. Milbourne

continued to look for the win, pressing forward and placing the St Andrew’s defence under pressure.

Unfortunately, a quick counter attack saw St Andrew’s score and take the match. Sonja Thurow was

awarded girl of the game and was praised on her skill set by the St Andrew’s coaches.

Next up came the middles and another end-to-end game. Both teams showed confidence on the ball

with Hattie Sabben-Clare and Ella McKinnon making strong runs in midfield. Sophia Austin-Foss and

Rebecca Turnock worked hard in defence to keep the St Andrew’s attack at bay. Esme Jordan proved

herself invaluable in goal making several goal line clearances throughout the match. St Andrew’s took

the lead into half time and were able to carry this lead onto full time. Milbourne were commended, by

the opposition, for their attitude and work rate and girl of the game was awarded to Esme for her

    excellent goalkeeping. Miss Watson

    Middles and Seniors v Chinthurst

The Middle and Senior girls had the pleasure of playing on home turf, and both rose to the occasion

to claim victories against Chinthurst. The Middle girls were up first and quickly adapted to the

challenges of playing on grass. Hattie Sabben-Clare took on the role of play-maker, controlling the

game from the centre of midfield to create a number of attacking opportunities. It didn’t take long for

Milbourne to find the back of the net with Scarlett Sleeman pouncing on an early ball into the D and

rounding the goalkeeper. Scarlett proved to be deadly in front of goal, adding further to her tally

throughout the match. Jaya Mittal came close to scoring twice, only to be denied by the post. Jaya

showed excellent perseverance and ran onto a cross from Ella McKinnon and find the bottom left

corner to score her first goal of the season. Hattie, Zara Latif and Alexandra Smith all scored to secure

a deserved win for Milbourne, with Hattie picking up girl of the game.

    Miss Watson

Spurred on by the success of the Middles, the Seniors were quick out of the blocks and placed the

Chinthurst defence under immediate pressure. Rosie Walker again proved to be lethal with her strong

runs from defence down the wings to play several crosses into the D, which Ellie Bennett was able to

capitalise on to add two more to her tally for the season. Lucie Jordan and Amel Khan displayed great

confidence, rounding defenders to score. Rebecca Turnock, Zara Latif, Alexandra Smith and Sophie

Austin-Foss all made their debut appearance for the Senior girls, with Rebecca and Alexandra both

showing composure in front of goal to find their way onto the scoresheet. Sonja Thurow was awarded

girl of the game for her darting runs down the wings.

The Year 3 recorder groups (all of 1R and 1S) will be performing at the concert. Please could all Year 3

recorder players make a concerted effort to remember their music and recorders on a Tuesday and to

complete their practice sheets during the week. Backing tracks for the two pieces they will be

performing have also been uploaded onto the music website. Please encourage your child to play

along to the music, which should really help them to prepare for their performance.

    Other Ensemble items

The Concert Band, String Ensemble and Advanced Recorder Ensemble will also be performing for us.

We are also looking forward to hearing our new Guitar Group performing for the first time. They have

been working hard in rehearsals and have been given music to take home with them to practise their

    parts.

    Auditions for Solo Items

There are a limited number of places for solo items and auditions for these are stil l taking place. A list

of pupils who have been selected for performance will be announced next week.

National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain

Congratulations to Cameron Kersey who has won a place in the National Children’s Orchestra of Great

Britain U12 playing on the trombone. Miss Cobham

    Guitar Club

Last week we started the first Guitar Club. This is for guitar

students who want to play pieces together and have fun. We

meet on a Friday before school and have begun to practise

different pieces. We will try a wide range of repertoire from

folk to classical and pop. Watch out for our first mini guitar

    concert.
