t Ski Trip!

Last Sunday, Pool Academy ski trip returned after an amaz-

ing week of skiing. This year the school visited the resort of

Alpe D’Huez in the French Alps, more famously known in the

summer as one of the summit finishes for the Tour de France

bicycle race. During the few days in July 800,000 people de-

scend on the small mountain top resort which has a usual pop-

ulation of 2500. Last week some 30,000 winter enthusiasts

were in resort, all treated to unseasonly snowy yet sunny

weather after one of the best snowfall

starts to a season on record.

For four days the students made exceptional progress on warm,

snowy slopes with their instructors Nicholas and Manu. The be-

ginners group went from barely being able to stand up to confi-

dently racing down blue slopes and even tackled a red slope on

the last day. Their instructor Nicholas was interestingly also a

paraskiing instructor which involves jumping off a summit with

skis on with a parachute…and they call that fun !!!

The students awoke on the first morning to 40cms of snow which

blanketed everything. The car park from the previous night, now looked like giant

humps of powder snow. Everyday it snowed and then was sunny, making it difficult

to know what to wear on the slopes. Hats and scarves one minute, boiling hot the

next.

Apart from the skiing, students had the opportunity to ice skate, bum board, sam-

pling the delights of Alpe D’Huez, , have a disco and ski presentation and students

also tried out their French in resort when purchasing

souvenirs.

Community Fun Day

With the Easter Holidays coming up, some of you may decide to have a clear out. We are going to have a second hand uniform stall so if you have any uni-form that no longer fits your child, please donate it to the school so we can sell it on. We will also be having stalls for raffles, tombolas, cuddly toys, books etc. If you have anything you would like to donate, bring it in to school after Easter and anything not suitable, we will donate to charity on your behalf.

Newspapers If anyone has any old newspapers at home, can they please be brought into school and given to the Art Department as their stock is running low!

Calling all Homemakers and Hobbyists

Do you have any useable remnants of fabric that we can recycle in our textile

projects? We are currently working with cotton so it’s very expensive and we are

struggling to offer a choice of resources to our students.

Can you help out? fabric, threads, wools, buttons and bows all welcomed.

Send your offerings to Mrs Wills, Textiles department DT6

Cornwall Music Festival

Following their recent success at the Music for Youth National Festival the school choir recently en-

tered the prestigious Cornwall Music Festival in Truro and came away with an amazing commenda-

tion from the adjudicators. The competition was of an incredibly high standard and the choir acquit-

ted themselves very professionally. Well done to the singers!

Their next major engagement will be to take part in the Heartlands Music Festival in the summer.

Are You a Student Leader yet?

If you look closely around school you will see pupils in all year groups proudly wearing one or maybe more of the badges shown in the picture. This means that they are a student leader within that department or a peer mentor / student researcher. All leaders will get to or-ganize their own projects, whether it’s a primary school festival or reviewing lessons and feeding back to teach-ers. Leaders will get to work with their old primary schools organizing lessons, festivals and workshops. They also receive a certificate which demonstrates to future colleges and employers their leadership and

commitment.

If you want to be a leader its never too late to join up. Please see your teacher or Mr.Webb for fur-

ther details and make the most of the fantastic opportunities available within Student Leadership.

Triple Jumping with Cassie Patten

12 of Pool Academy's top athletes were

guests at coaching masterclass organised by

the Curnow School at Cornwall College. It

was hosted by ex-Olympic triple jumper

Vernon Samuels, helped by Olympic Open

Water Swimming bronze medallist, from

Bodmin, Cassie Patten. It was based around

triple jumping, at which some of our students

excelled, with a question and answer session

at the end."

Year 7 Girls Rugby

On Monday, the Year 7 Girls Rugby team participated in the West Cornwall Schools Champs.

This event was the culmination of many weeks of practise where the girls were put through

their paces by rugby community coach—Phil Morris.

They won two and narrowly lost two matches, but more importantly, were fantastic ambassa-

dors for Pool Academy.
