No, this is not about a Minnesota spelunking team. It’s about moles, and the title addresses a problem we have no shortage of in our fair state. There are 7 species of moles in North America. The ones we deal with here in Minnesota are the eastern mole and the star nose mole. How do you know it’s a mole? Here’s some helpful info. Moles will mound dirt similar to that of a pocket gopher. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is that the pocket gopher mound starts out as a half moon shape. A mole mound starts out round and stays round with a domed look to it. Moles push clumps of dirt up in the making of its mound. The pocket gopher throws it up and out, giving the dirt a sifted look. The biggest mole mound that I found measured 2 ½’ in diameter and 1 ½’ high. Here’s more: due to the makeup of the mole's blood they get all the oxygen they need from the ground and do not need holes in their system to breath. In fact, they hate holes and repair them daily. So a rule of thumb is... an open hole is not a mole. The holes we find in some mole tunnels can be blamed on a couple of other culprits, the vole and the shrew. The shrew runs up and down the mole’s tunnel stealing its food, and the vole; well, he likes to run up and down those tunnels to hide if need be, or to chew on the roots of all the plants the mole has tunneled by. Ever see a mole? They are about the size of a chipmunk ranging between 5 to 6+ inches in length. Moles are not rodents, they are insectivores, meaning they will eat all sorts of insects, larva (grubs and such) and earthworms being there main source of energy; and what an appetite! These little creatures have to eat 85% to 100% of their body weight each day just to avoid starving to death, and will consume 40 to 50 pounds of worms and other insects in a year’s time. Ever see 40-50 lbs of worms or insects? Doesn’t seem like much but, in comparison, the average human male with that kind of appetite would have to eat 120 to 150 pounds of hamburger each day… or over 200,000 quarter pounders in a year. Contrary to popular belief, a mole does not live on a straight diet of grubs, so killing grubs will not totally kill your mole problem and as far as I know there is no registered product to kill earthworms. The mole is a territorial critter taking anywhere from ½ to a full acre for their territory. Considering the female can only produce 2 to 5 offspring a year with 3 being average, you can expect 1 to 4 moles on a one acre or less lot depending on whether it is a female with juveniles, or a single male. Nevertheless, just one or several of these puppies can do a tremendous amount of damage to your lawn and flowers. So, with that said,-- let’s talk about how they get around. Moles cannot store any fat due to their metabolism, so the mole remains active all year long even winter. Because it does not hibernate it forces them to go below the frost line to chase earthworms during the winter, thus making their tunnels quite extensive. The tunnels we normally get to see from above ground are primarily used for warm weather feeding. The tunnels we want to place traps on are the main tunnels that take them to and from their various feeding areas. Now moles can travel through tunnels at around 80’ per minute. They can also do a summersault mid tunnel to head in the other direction very quickly. Their fur was even made to lay down in either direction so they can move backwards and forwards with no problem. Those mole tunnels we hate so much can be created at a rate of about 18 feet/hour. Even more interesting is that it can be so straight it’d look like they got out of their tunnel and snapped a chalk line to follow. Suffice it to say there’s a lot of power in these little fellas. In fact, if the average human was built like a mole, they could apply an outward force with their arms of up to 4,800 pounds. ■ On April 13, 1742, George Friedrich Handel’s “Messiah” premieres in Dublin. Although singing the oratorio has become a Christmas tradition, the
Messiah received its world premiere during the Christian season of Lent. Handel composed the score for Messiah in just 24 days.
■ On April 14, 1818, Noah Webster, a Yale-educated lawyer with an avid interest in language and education, publishes his American Dictionary of the English Language. The dictionary, which took him more than two decades to complete, introduced more than 10,000 “Americanisms.”
■ On April 15, 1924, Rand McNally releases its fi rst comprehensive road atlas. The fi rst version was called the Rand McNally Auto Chum. Today Rand McNally is the world’s largest maker of atlases in print and electronic media.
■ On April 11, 1945, the American Third Army liberates the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar, Germany. Buchenwald will be judged second only to Auschwitz in the horrors it imposed on its prisoners. Among those saved by the Americans was Elie Wiesel, who would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
■ On April 9, 1969, the Chicago Eight, indicted on federal charges of conspiracy to cross state lines with intent to incite a riot at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, plead not guilty. The trial turned into a circus as the defendants and their attorneys used the court as a platform to attack President Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, racism and oppression.
■ On April 22, 1889, at precisely high noon, thousands of would-be settlers make a mad dash into the newly opened Oklahoma Territory to claim cheap land. All told, from 50,000 to 60,000 settlers entered the territory that day. Towns like Norman, Oklahoma City, Kingfi sher and Guthrie sprang into being almost overnight.
■ On April 21, 1918, in the skies over France, Manfred von Richthofen, the notorious German fl ying ace known as “The Red Baron” with 80 victories under his belt, is killed by Allied fi re. He was 25 years old.
■ On April 17, 1937, Daffy Duck makes his debut in the Warner Bros. short “Porky’s Duck Hunt.” In the 1920s, movie houses had started showing a short cartoon before feature presentations, but the form became more popular after sound was introduced in 1928.
■ On April 16, 1947, in Texas City’s port on Galveston Bay, a fi re aboard the French freighter Grandcamp ignites ammonium nitrate, causing a massive blast that destroys much of the city and takes nearly 600 lives. The fi re department tried to douse the fl ames, but the ship was so hot that the water from their fi re hoses was instantly vaporized.

• A man in Bristol, Pennsylvania, was arrested after robbing a house when he found himself unable to leave. The man had entered the garage and locked the door behind him, only to discover he couldn’t get the automatic door to open. He remained in the garage for eight days, living on Pepsi and dog food until the startled owners came home.• A man in San Diego, California, was charged with stealing lobsters from traps. When the police arrived to arrest him, he hid the plundered lobsters in his pants. Ouch! • Shane Stant went before an Oregon judge to have his record expunged after a felony conviction for his part in the 1994 Olympic skating scandal that sidelined Nancy Kerrigan and put Tonya Harding in jail. His reason for wanting his record expunged? His felony was keeping him out of the Navy Seals.• In the 1991 fi lm “The Super,” Joe Pesci played a slumlord who was sentenced to live in his own run-down apartment building. In 2008, a Cleveland judge gave a man the same punishment: house arrest in his own dilapidated building.• A Los Angeles woman was charged with wasting police resources after she called 911 to report that her onion rings were cold after receiving them at a local fast food joint.• A woman in Lake Parsippany, New Jersey, was charged with disorderly conduct after making several 911 calls. She insisted that it wasn’t her fault,
saying her German shepherd had made them without her knowledge. • A Georgia judge got tough on graffi ti by ordering vandalized businesses to remove the offending graffi ti in 30 days or face a $1,000 fi ne.• Don’t steal Wi-Fi service in Florida, or you can face a felony charge. That’s what one man discovered after accessing a homeowner’s service while in his car. The homeowner reported the crime after noticing an unfamiliar car parked in front of his house.• A police chief in Washington, D.C., learned fi rst-hand about crime when his squad car was stolen a
block from his home. He was disciplined for leaving his riot gear in the trunk.• A man in Berkeley, California, received several ransom notes after a 6-foot bald Cyprus tree was stolen from in front of his house. The price of its return was the replanting of the tree in a place that didn’t obstruct the view of drivers in the neighborhood. remarkable for why he was arrested (for violating probation), but for his name. His legal name is Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop. • A 65-year-old Utah woman was charged with misdemeanor assault for an attack on the driver of an ice-cream truck. She claimed the attack was justifi ed because the prices of the frozen treats were too high.• When a policeman pulled over a Washington man for speeding, he discovered that the passenger was a green skeleton in a hooded sweatshirt. The driver employed his scary co-pilot to use the faster commuter lane.• A Florida man was charged with bribery of a public offi cial when he tried to bribe two arresting offi cers with tickets for the Miami Dolphins, who started the 2011 season by losing its fi rst seven games. Said the chastising judge: "Have you been watching the Dolphins? No one's going to go to that game."• Four Pittsburgh teens were caught and charged with theft after showing off their stolen loot on Facebook just an hour after they robbed a convenience store.• Two Florida women were accused of stealing decorations this past Christmas. They were caught because they put them in their yard less than a block from where the items had been stolen. • In Brookville, Pennsylvania, a 45-year-old man was charged with disorderly conduct after faking his own death to get out of work. He wrote up his own memorial notice, which was actually published in the local newspaper.• A Washington jury acquitted a man involved in a break-in where he threw a weasel at the homeowner. The weasel was deceased, and the projectile caused no harm.

►This tip is from my babysitter. She gives small children two ‘get
out of bed free’ tickets at bedtime. If they get out of bed, say, for one last drink of water, etc. (we parents know these are stalling tactics), they have to give her a ticket. If they still have a ticket unused when they fall asleep, she will leave a prize with their parents for the morning. -- M.J. in New Mexico
► A top coat a day keeps the manicurist away! Revive your polish by giving the ends a quick coat of clear top coat daily to extend the life of your manicure.
► To keep spring boots looking tall and smelling pretty
good, loosely roll a thin stack of newspaper, stick it down the leg portion of your boot, then fi ll it with a stack of balled-up newspapers. It will support the leg, which will not fl op over and cause cracks. And the newspaper absorbs any smells.

● Fresh eggs are rough and chalky. They will sink and
stay horizontal on the bottom of a glass of water. The eggwhite is viscous and close around the plump yolk. Old eggs are smooth and shiny. They will fl oat in a glass of water. The eggwhite is watery and the yolk is fl at in an egg roughly 3 weeks old.
● Before you wear a new garment, put a little clear nail polish on the front and back of each button. Buttons will stay on longer when their threads are sealed.
● Zippers won’t stick if you rub them with the edge of a bar of soap.
● To remove a hem crease, sponge the material with white vinegar and press with a warm iron.

As the annual income tax deadline draws near, here are some facts about this dreaded subject!
• Folks have been paying taxes in some form since ancient times. The fi rst written records date back to Egypt, when grain, livestock or oils were used as payment.• In American colonial times, the mother country England taxed its colonists on nearly everything, from newspapers, playing cards and documents to paper, paint and tea. The famous Boston Tea Party occurred in 1773, when 116 colonists dressed up as Native Americans and boarded three ships anchored in Boston Harbor. The ships’ entire cargo of tea was thrown overboard, 90,000 pounds (40,823 kg) of tea in 342 crates. The value in today’s money would be equal to about $1 million.• After the American Revolutionary War, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton needed a way to pay off the debt created by the war. His solution was the instigation of a “sin tax,” a tax on those items viewed by society as immoral. The Whiskey Tax of 1791 levied a 28-percent tax on every gallon of whiskey. In 1794, it was expanded to other “luxuries,” such as carriages, sugar, snuff and salt.• When the War of 1812 incurred more debt, the government initiated taxes on gold, silverware, jewelry and watches, an act that remained in place for fi ve years. When that tax was repealed, the government relied on tariffs on imported goods to fund the country.• The nation’s fi rst actual income tax was implemented to fund the Civil War in 1862. Those earning annual income between $800 and $10,000 paid income taxes of 3 percent, while those above $10,000 paid a higher rate. The inheritance tax was also introduced. The offi ce of Commissioner of Internal Revenue was established the same
year. But the income tax was repealed once the debt had been eliminated. • The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1913 gave Congress “power to lay and collect taxes on incomes” on a permanent basis. The fi rst Form 1040 was created that year. Because of generous exemptions and deductions, in 1913, less than 1 percent of citizens paid income tax at the rate of 1 percent of net income. • In 1913, the U.S. tax code manual consisted of 400 pages. Forty years later it was 14,000 pages. Another 40 years brought the document to 26,300 pages. It seems to be getting much more complicated as the years go by — the 2011 tax code contained 72,536 pages! • The complexity of the system has grown a lot since that fi rst Form 1040. In 1990, there were 402 various IRS tax forms. By 2002, that number had jumped to 526, and today there are more than 800 different forms. • Most of us complain about our taxes, but some just plain refuse to comply. Movie star Wesley Snipes began serving a three-year prison sentence in December 2010 for failing to fi le tax returns, in debt to the government for $17 million. The government seized the assets of singer Willie Nelson to collect the $16 million in back taxes he owed. Baseball great Pete Rose failed to claim income from his utograph signings and spent fi ve months in prison for this oversight. In 1973, the political career of Vice President Spiro Agnew ended when he resigned after being charged with tax evasion.
IT’S TAX TIME!
J. D. Roberts has a colorful past. He has served as a member of the Army’s elite Delta Force and as a narcotics agent for the Drug Enforcement Agency. He has even worked security for some of Hollywood’s top action adventure celebrities. He now uses his expertise and experience as an instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia. When asked if he had ever run into any dumb criminals, one incident immediately came to his mind. One night Roberts was involved in a raid on a drug house that was doing a brisk business in marijuana sales. He and the other agents were dressed in black “battle” fatigues with “NarcoticsAgent” stenciled on them. Local uniformed offi cers in marked police cruisers also took part in the raid. Roberts and his team easily
entered the house and apprehended the suspect. Several hundred pounds of marijuana were confi scated without incident. Within
minutes, the offi cers were collecting evidence and fi nishing up at the scene. As Roberts started out the front door, he noticed a pickup truck parked behind one of the marked police cruisers in front of the house. Two long-haired individuals got out of the pickup and strolled past the police cruisers parked in the driveway, then walked up to Roberts and his partner. “Hey man, he still selling pot?” Roberts looked at his partner, then back at the guy. “Yeah, he is. Just go around and knock on the back door.” “Cool.” The two men nodded and walked on. Roberts watched in amazement as the two individuals sauntered around to the rear of the house. Roberts radioed the offi cers still inside the house that they had customers at the back door.
The uniformed offi cers inside quickly hid while one plainclothes detective answered the door. The new customers asked where the old owner was, and the offi cer explained that the owner had stepped out but that he could help them. They requested a fi fty-dollar bag of marijuana. The offi cer went to the next room, grabbed a handful from the four hundred pounds of pot they had just confi scated and stuffed it into a plastic bag. The two customers were ecstatic. They thanked the offi cer for his generosity. Roberts and his partner were still in the driveway, still wearing the black battle fatigues with “Narcotics Agent” stenciled on their chests, when the two customers headed back to their pickup, oblivious to the uniformed offi cers and the two marked police cruisers in the driveway. Finally, Roberts walked up to the two satisfi ed customers and arrested them. The agents reconfi scated the dope and impounded the pickup—just as
another prospective customer pulled up. Roberts decided this was too easy to ignore. “We moved the two cruisers and started putting the impounded vehicles in the back. We made about fourteen more sales and arrests that night. By the time we were through, the backyard was fi lled with cars. It was the darnedest impromptu sting I’ve ever seen.”

The Reluctant PsychicGuides:
Our guides have a diffi cult time. Imagine having to “guide” someone down a specifi c path without them knowing what that path is. In a nutshell that’s what our guides have to do. One of the questions I’m asked frequently is, do I have a guide. Everyone has a guide. We do not take this journey of learning and experience without having someone there to help us along the way. Even if most people never meet their guide. We all have a spirit family. Before we make the journey to come into human form we make contracts with members of our spirit family to help us along our way. We know what we want to experience once we are born and we also know that after we’re born we won’t remember what that was, which is all part of the experience. We talk to our spirit family about what we want to accomplish while we are here and how and when they can best help us along on that path. In exchange for that we agree to help them when it’s their turn. The second we are born our guides are ready to help us along. As infants and small children their job isn’t too diffi cult because we can still hear them and we have no problem believing the voice in our head. It’s when we get older that their job really becomes interesting. Our guides have two main ways of communicating with us once we’ve passed the easy years. We are about school age when this happens. Once we reach the age when we begin to worry about what others will say if we tell them things unusual. When we are awake they let us know which direction to take by contracting our abdominals. It’s that “gut” instinct people talk about. If your stomach clenches when you think about doing something, it’s not the correct decision
for you to make to keep you on the path of what you wanted to experience in this life. I doubt that you have ever heard someone say they wish they hadn’t followed their gut instinct. It’s always the other way around. We frequently hear, if only I’d followed my gut instinct. I tell my students to always do a body check when making big decisions. If they feel comfortable and relaxed then it’s going to be the right decision for them. The second way our guides talk to us is in our sleep. Sleep is the perfect medium for our guides to communicate with us. There is nothing to get in the way. If you have a decision to make, before you go to sleep, pose the question to your guide about what you should do. In the morning you will have your answer. Not only will you have your answer, it will be so obvious to you that you’ll be surprised you were ever considering anything else. This is where the saying, “Sleep on it” comes from. Most people don’t realize what they are really saying. Knowing we have a guide out there to help us on our path makes me feel more confi dent about everything I do. I hope the same will be true for you now too. Thank you for your interest and attention. If you’d like to have a reading, please contact me. Till next time, stay in touch with yourself, your life, and with those loved ones who have moved on.
