Only $35 GOOD AT 160+ GOLF COURSES Don’t Grow Old Before Your Time By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, DIBCN Board-certified Neurologist No one wants to feel old before their time with declining health, muscle loss, increased body fat, decreased energy, low sex drive and foggy thinking. Age may be inevitable but aging is not! Aging is the slow deterioration of cellular vitality, primarily controlled by our lifestyle choices and genetics. This degenerative process accounts for 90% of all adult illness. However, aging does not occur uniformly in individuals and the symptoms of aging can appear early in life to steal its joy and wonder. Aging problems usually become apparent to us in our 50s and 60s. But early aging can appear even in our 30s and 40s. The first signs are the all too common symptoms of fatigue, stiffness, chronic muscle and joint pain, loss of muscle mass, poor digestion, recurrent infections, insomnia, mood and memory problems. These conditions are all related to a loss of cell vitality. What are the primary causes of this loss of vitality and early aging? On the top is our Standard American Diet or SAD which is the overconsumption of calories and the under consumption of nutrients, it is a driving force of premature aging. Add to that the exposure to 4 million synthetic compounds and over 89,000 industrial chemicals we have put into our environment. Presently, five of the most toxic chemicals known are found in everyone and are linked to hormone disruption, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation. Our SAD diets and chemical exposure rob us of our vitality by disrupting the energy producing power plants of our cells the mitochondria, thus accelerating the aging process. Mitochondria are little bio-engines that take calories from your food and burn them for energy. When they are working well you have all the energy you need throughout the day. Energy to digest, move muscles, think clearly, and generally experience a vibrant mood. When they are not working efficiently, it leads to and you feel the symptoms of premature aging and ill health. Early aging with hormonal imbalance can also inhibit the physical, sexual and cognitive function in both men and women. This process begins to accelerate after the age of 50. In males the notable symptoms are increased abdominal fat and decreased muscle mass, the hallmarks of male hormone balance or Andropause. For women the most bothersome problems can be the vasomotor symptoms of hot flushes and night sweats of perimenopause, also caused by hormonal imbalance. Hormonal imbalance in both sexes will cause multiple symptoms associated with premature aging including loss of libido, depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, a decrease of facial hair in men and an increase in women. If this all sounds a little too familiar and discouraging fear not, there is something you can do to avoid growing old before your time! Recent advancements in science have found specific biomarkers in the blood and urine that can let us know specifically what is causing premature aging and health problems. With this knowledge a specific program of diet, nutrition, metabolic support and exercise can be developed specifically for you. Making positive dietary, nutritional and lifestyle changes can allow you to lead a healthy, vital and happy life. PS: There are no drugs existing today that can do this for you. Tired of suffering and feeling weak and confused? Take action! Start eating better. Consume more fruits vegetables, seeds, nuts, and 100% whole grains. Get off the couch! Start moving around more! Dust off that old exercise bike or just walk. If you really want to get serious, find a doctor who is knowledgeable in the Biomarkers of aging, and can utilize them to optomize a health and aging program specific for you. You can improve you health, happiness and your life. It’s not simple but it’s real and most importantly, it’s for you and those you love. Feel free to call our office at 763-862-7100 to learn more. He used it as a pseudonym in his writing for nearly 50 years.
● On April 10, 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is founded in New York City by philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh. Bergh’s impassioned accounts of the horrors infl icted on animals convinced
the New York State legislature to pass the ASPCA charter.
● On April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games, a long-lost tradition of ancient Greece, are reborn in Athens -- 1,500 years after being banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I. King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition.

to cheer when he hit a 4th-inning pitch off the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Al Downing
● On April 17, 1790, American statesman, printer, scientist and writer Benjamin Franklin dies in Philadelphia at age 84. Deeply interested in science and technology, his inventions include the Franklin stove, bifocal eyeglasses and the lightning rod.
● On April 11, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France, abdicates the throne and, in the Treaty of Fontainebleau, is banished to the Mediterranean island of Elba. He died at age 52 on May 5, 1821, possibly from stomach cancer, although some theories contend he was poisoned.
● On April 12, 1908, a fi re in Chelsea, Mass., at the Boston Blacking Company leaves 12 dead, 85 missing and presumed dead and more than 17,000 homeless. Due to high winds, a good portion of the city burned. It took nearly 10 years for Chelsea to be completely rebuilt.
● On April 16, 1943, in Basel, Switzerland, Albert Hoffman, a Swiss chemist, accidentally consumes LSD-25, a synthetic drug he had created in 1938 as part of his research into the medicinal value of lysergic acid compounds. Widespread use
of the so-called mind-expanding drug did not begin until the 1960s.
● On April 15, 1959, new Cuban leader Fidel Castro visits the United States. The trip got off to an inauspicious start when it became clear that President Dwight D. Eisenhower had no intention of meeting with Castro. Instead, Eisenhower went to the golf course to avoid any chance meeting.

Keep your “ears” open — It’s time to learn more about corn, a crop grown on every continent of the world except Antarctica.
• When we speak of a “bushel” of corn, we are talking about 56 pounds (25.4 kg). This weight is after the husks and cobs have been removed and only the shelled corn remains. There are about 1,300 kernels in one pound (454 g). During the 1930s, when farmers were harvesting by hand, their yield was about 100 bushels per day. Today, a combine accomplishes in less than seven minutes what it took the famer all day to do. The USDA tells us that in 1965, the yield per acre was about 74 bushels. Today, that fi gure is 154 bushels per acre.
• Inside each corn plant there are two fl owering parts or “infl orescences.” The male part is the tassel, and the silks are the female parts. Each tassel releases as many as fi ve million grains of pollen. The silks complete the fertilization process by transporting the pollen to the developing ear of corn, and each spot on the cob becomes a kernel. There is one piece of silk for each
kernel. Every ear of corn has an even number of rows, anywhere from eight to about 22 rows. The average ear contains 800 kernels arranged in 16 rows.
• Why are there ears of corn with missing kernels? It’s likely because it was a hot summer, and the silks dried out before all the cob’s sites were fertilized.
• An average corn plant growing under optimal conditions will be about 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall by the middle of the summer. Its roots will reach an amazing 6.5 feet (2 meters) into the ground.
• Ever year, one U.S. farmer will provide food for 129 people. Half of the U.S. supply comes from only four states — Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Minnesota. About 55 percent of Iowa’s corn is exported to foreign markets.
• The state of Iowa grows more corn than any other U.S. state, producing more in a year than most countries. In fact, Iowa, with an area of 56,276 square miles (145,754 sq. km), grows three times as much corn as Argentina, whose area is 1,068,296 square miles (2,766,890 sq. km). Most of Iowa’s corn won’t ever
make it to the dinner table. As little as 0.04 percent grown is sweet corn, just about 4,900 acres out of a whopping 11.9 million acres. The largest portion is used for animal feed. One bushel of corn will eventually yield 5.6 pounds (2.54 kg) of beef at the store, or 13 pounds (5.9 kg) of pork, or 32 pounds (14.5 kg) of chicken.
• As with all fresh produce, sweet corn tastes much better the sooner it is eaten after being picked. After just six hours at room temperature after picking, it loses up to 40 percent of its sugar content. And don’t husk it until you’re ready to eat it.
• Do you know the difference between white and yellow corn? White is smaller and sweeter than yellow.
• If you’re having a bowl of corn fl akes for breakfast, those fl akes are only about 8 percent corn.
• Edward “Cookie” Jarvis travels around America competing in speed-eating competitions and holds a number of records. Cookie has set a record by devouring 33 ½ ears of corn in just 12 minutes. He has even been featured in a Discovery Channel documentary entitled “Gut Busters.

● “To wrap a baby gift in unforgettable gift wrap, circle the announcement in the paper with a colorful marker, then use the newsprint to wrap your package. It has always gotten rave reviews from recipients.” -- R.L. in Virginia
● Another reason to get the newspaper: Crushed newspaper makes a great rag for shining windows in your home and in the car. No lint left behind!
● “When thickening soup, don’t overlook instant potato mix. It’s perfect for making a thin broth into a nice, thick stew sauce, and it’s pretty cheap. It only takes a couple of tablespoons.” -- I.F. in Utah
● Want delicious fried chicken crust but not the dripping oil? Baste chicken pieces with mayonnaise, then dredge in crushed cracker crumbs mixed with a bit of fl our. Bake and enjoy.
● Have stubborn stains in the toilet? Put some teeth in your cleaning job by dropping in a denture-cleaning tablet and letting it sit overnight. In the morning, scrub and fl ush. It just might do the job.
● “Lighten blemish spots on your skin with lemon juice. Just dab on several times
per day.” -- O.M. in Georgia
● Save power with this tip: Use cold water to wash towels and jeans. Then hang them to dry -- preferably outside, but on an inside line is OK, too. When they are mostly dry, pop them in the dryer on air dry to fl uff them up. Towels and jeans take the longest to dry in the clothes dryer, and use a lot of electricity.
● Take soap scum right off your shower curtain -- spray with a vinegar-and-water mixture, then throw it in the washer. Hang it right back up, and those mildew stains are gone!
● Another great suggestion from L.D.W. in Illinois: When canning or doing another job, “always do the thing you hate fi rst, and then the rest will be easier.”

APRIL EVENTS (continued):• April has been an eventful month
in the world of baseball. In April of 1912, Detroit’s Tiger Stadium and Boston’s Fenway Park both opened on the same day. Eleven years later, Yankee Stadium had its opening day in April. New York Mets’ Shea Stadium was inaugurated in April of 1964. It was an especially memorable occasion when the world’s fi rst domed sports stadium opened in April of 1965. Houston’s Astrodome was built at a cost of $37 million and included a sophisticated air conditioning system to deal with Texas’ July and August average temperatures of 97 degrees. Opening night entertainment at the Astrodome included performances by Judy Garland and The Supremes. The Astros were up against the New York Yankees in an exhibition game, and Mickey Mantle hit the fi rst home run
in the Astrodome off Houston pitcher Turk Farrell.
• The Titanic departed from the port at Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, bound for New York City. The ship set sail with 2,227 passengers on board and lifeboats for only 1,178 of those people. In the wee hours of the morning on April 15, two and a half hours after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic, the Titanic sank, taking 1,517 people to their deaths.
• You’ve probably never heard of Harriet Quimby, but she’s quite famous in her own right. Quimby was the fi rst woman to earn a pilot’s license in the United States and less than a year later, became the fi rst woman to fl y across the English Channel. In April of 1912, she took off from Dover, England, and landed on a French beach 59 minutes later. Unfortunately, her amazing feat
didn’t get much coverage in the newspapers, as the tragic sinking of the Titanic had taken place the day before. • April has been a big month for space adventures. In April of 1961, Soviet Yuri Gagarin became the fi rst human to travel into space aboard Vostok I, edging out American Alan Shepard by a mere 23 days. Apollo 13 blasted off on April 11, 1970, commanded by James A. Lovell Jr. and scheduled as the third space mission to land on the moon. Two days later, an oxygen tank aboard the craft exploded, placing the crew in grave danger. They returned safely on April 17. Apollo 16 made an April 1972 fl ight to the moon, under the command of John Young. The fi rst launch of the space shuttle Columbia also occurred in April, in 1981, and in 1990, the shuttle Discovery headed into space carrying the $1.5 billion Hubble Telescope.• Earth Day was fi rst observed in April of 1970, with 20 million participants. It was the brainstorm of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin,
who came up with the idea after touring a disastrous oil spill in the Santa Barbara, California, area. In his words, “It had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country.”
• The press dubbed it “The Wedding the Century” when actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in April of 1956. Thirty-six seamstresses worked on the 26-year-old Kelly’s wedding dress for six weeks in preparation for the nuptials. She had met the prince the previous April while doing a photo shoot in connection with the Cannes Film Festival. After eight months of correspondence, Rainier traveled to America, met the Kelly family, and three days later, he proposed. Her family was required to provide a dowry of $2 million to him before marriage plans were to proceed. Six hundred guests attended the wedding, and the royal couple departed that evening for a seven-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise aboard the prince’s yacht.
• Lots of folks don’t have to stop to ask for directions thanks to the efforts of Rand McNally. In April of 1924, the company published its fi rst road atlas, although they had been publishing maps and geography textbooks for years. The company was founded by William Rand and Andrew McNally in 1868 and became the fi rst major mapmaker to use a system of numbered highways.
• April has had its share of tragedies. In 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed by Timothy McVeigh. In 1999, Colorado’s Columbine High School shootings occurred. It was also the month of the assassinations of President Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. The devastating nuclear accident
at the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl plant also took place in April.
• Twenty-seven-year-old James Cash Penney headed out to Wyoming in 1902, and on April 13 of that year in the community of Kemmerer, he opened his fi rst dry goods and clothing store called The Golden Rule. He chose the name because it was his philosophy to treat others the way he would like to be treated. In his free time, Penney worked as a lumberjack felling trees. Ten years later, his chain of stores had grown to 34 stores, and he incorporated them all as the J.C. Penney Company. By 1924, he was generating an income upwards of $1.5 million a year. Today, the company operates over 1,100 stores with 150,000 employees and sales approaching $18 billion annually. And that little store in Kemmerer? Still there, operating on a daily basis.
