● On March 24, 1765, Parliament passes the Quartering Act, which required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies, local inns, livery stables, ale houses, uninhabited houses, outhouses or barns. Forcing colonists from their own homes was not the intent of the law.● On March 21, 1871, journalist Henry Morton Stanley begins his famous search through Africa for missing British explorer Dr. David Livingstone. When Stanley found him on Oct. 27, he stepped forward and stretched out his hand: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”● On March 25, 1911, fl ames engulf the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City, killing 145 workers. Only one elevator was operational in the 10-story building. There were two stairways down to the street, but one was locked from the outside. The inside fi re hose was rotted and its valve was rusted shut.
● On March 26, 1941, Italy attacks the British fl eet at Suda Bay, Crete, using manned torpedoes to sink a British cruiser. Known as the “Chariot,” the manned torpedo was ridden by “pilots” to “drive” them to their targets in the harbor. ● On March 23, 1962, Pakistan’s governor, Ayub Khan, gives fi rst lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy a horse she nicknames “Black Jack.” Jackie chose “Black Jack” to serve as the ceremonial riderless horse during Pres. Kennedy’s funeral.● On March 27, 1973, the actor Marlon Brando declines the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “The Godfather” as a protest against Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in fi lm. Scott, who declined to accept his award for “Patton” in 1971.● On March 22, 1983, the Pentagon awards a production contract worth more than $1 billion to AM General Corporation to develop 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV). Nicknamed the Humvee, the rugged vehicle was designed to transport
troops and cargo. In 1992, a civilian version of the Humvee, known as the Hummer, went on sale.● On March 28, 1774, upset by acts of destruction of British property by American colonists, the British Parliament enacts the Coercive Acts. The acts included closing the port of Boston and making British offi cials immune to criminal prosecution in Massachusetts.● On March 30, 1820, Anna Sewell, author of “Black Beauty,” is born. “Black Beauty,” the fi rst signifi cant children’s story in the English language to focus on animal characters, established the precedent for countless other works. The story, narrated by the horse, showed Black Beauty’s progression through a series of increasingly cruel owners.● On April 2, 1863, responding to acute food shortages, hundreds of starving women riot in the Confederate capital of Richmond, Va., demanding that the government release emergency supplies. At one point, Confederate President Jefferson Davis threw his pocket change at the mob from the top of a wagon.● On April 3, 1882, Jesse James, one of America’s most notorious outlaws, is shot to death by fellow gang member Robert

When there are upheavals in the world, those of us who are sensitive may feel it and not understand what’s happening. Because everything is made up of energy, there are ripple effects when that energy is disturbed. With situations like the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, those of us who are sensitive can feel it in different ways.
When the earth shifted with the quake, the same energy that caused the tsunami was sent out all around the world, hitting everyone in its path. You can feel it inside your body and mistake it for illness or feeling “out of sorts.”
When the tsunami hit and so much destruction and loss of life happened, the emotional toll went out in a surge of energy, just like what was caused by the earthquake. The ripple effect of this energy movement causes us to feel differently.
You may notice an increase in headaches or body aches. Emotions will be running high. Do not be surprised if people around you cry easily or want to argue or that you are the one crying and feeling argumentative.
This can also be a ripple effect. The earthquake/tsunami causes someone to feel out of sorts and they begin to pick at you. You might not have felt the change due to the earthquake,
but you do feel the emotional change in the person wanting to argue with you.
During times like these, it’s important to take care of your emotional and physical needs. Eat healthy foods even though you will be craving carbs and sweets. Remember to drink water. Meditate more. If you fi nd yourself feeling crabby, take yourself away from others. Keep in mind that you could be spreading the emotional disturbance. Treat it like you would the fl u or a cold. Stay away from others until the worse of it has passed.
Now might not be a good time to make important life decisions. Avoid quitting your job or breaking it off with a loved one until we are all feeling settled again. You will not be happy if you do something drastic only to wake up a few days or weeks later wondering what you did and how can you correct it.Thank you for your interest and attention. Till next time, stay in touch with yourself, with your life, and with those loved ones who have moved on.

PARK IT HERE!For years, cities have had to come up with solutions
for parking cars to allow access for employees and people doing business as well as for visitors and tourists.
• Whether called a car park, parking garage, parking structure, parking ramp, parking deck, parkade or some other name, buildings equipped to hold lots of cars have become a necessity for crowded cities. Unique parking structures are found in cities around the world. Architects have not only worked to solve parking problems but have designed some memorable structures.
• One of the earliest, if not the earliest, parking garages was the Botanic Gardens Garage in Glasgow, Scotland, built between 1906 and 1912. It had cages for the cars and a distinctive façade of green and white glazed terracotta tiles. Preservationists have been fi ghting to keep it from demolition.
• The fi rst known multi-story car structure in the United States was built in 1918 for the Hotel LaSalle in Chicago. It was demolished in 2005.
• Designers of those fi rst parking structures would be astonished at the size, design and automation available today.
• Volkswagen’s Autostadt in Woofsburg, Germany, is an amusement park based on an automotive theme as well as a place to purchase a new car. It includes a car museum, car-factory tours, driving courses and more. Two 20-story car silos housing 800 new Volkswagens are attention-grabbing sites. If you decide to buy, a central robotic arm will travel up the tower and deliver your car to you with an odometer that reads zero. It is possible for six people to travel up the silo in the same way the cars do for a view of the towers’ interior.
• A parking area combined with shopping, restaurants, etc. in Tokyo Bay is quite a tourist destination. Even though it is expensive to access by toll, the Umihotaru, “fl oating car park,” is a must see. Its design resembles a cruise ship, and it is built on an artifi cial island where Japan’s longest tunnel, the Aqualine, ends and becomes a bridge.
• Another parking structure connected to water is Marina City on the Chicago River in Chicago that was built to discourage city residents from moving to the suburbs. Two 65-story towers that were part of the complex and completed in 1964 contain 18 fl oors for parking. Each tower of the “corncob” structure accommodates 450 autos.
• Turning from water to books, the “Community Bookshelf” parking garage for the Central Library in Kansas City, Missouri, looks like a row of books on a library shelf. The south wall of the garage is designed with signboard mylar book spines measuring 25 feet by 9 feet (7.6 m x 2.7 m). The books showcased are 22 titles that were suggested by readers.
• Cologne, Germany, has Europe’s longest parking structure. Rheinauhafen is a parking tunnel that is 2.5 miles (4 km) long with three strategically placed entrances.
• The Michigan Theater in Detroit, Michigan, is another unusual parking garage. Originally a grand theater built in 1926 on the site where Henry Ford built his fi rst automobile, it was scheduled for demolition in 1976. Engineers saved the historic building by redesigning it into a three-story garage.
• R. Omar Barker said it well in 1946: “Here lies an urban gentleman, who failed to make his mark, he died with his lifetime squandered, hunting some place to park!”
NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson
Before removing a splinter, ice the area. There’s less fussing, and a wooden splinter might absorb some liquid, causing it to swell enough to pop out a bit more on its own.
Trying to spot roof damage but not quite sure you’re ready for a trip up the ladder? Before you get up on the roof, get out your binoculars. You’d be surprised how much you can see from the ground. Do a cursory examination and then decide if anything needs a closer look.
“Cut kitchen sponges into
smaller pieces. They clean as well as a larger sponge, and you can dispose of the smaller pieces when they get yucky.” -- O.C. in Michigan
“Need sliced mushrooms for your salad or recipe? They are hard to cut, but you might have a perfect tool for doing the job already in your kitchen. If you have an egg slicer, get it out. It works very well for mushrooms, and it’s easier to use than trying to cut those slices yourself.” -- J.R. in Utah
Check your local newspaper or city/county government for programs that provide free or near-
free water barrels. Many areas have a program, and they really do help keep your water costs down if you have fl owers or vegetable gardens.
To keep the edges of lettuce from browning, tear
it or use a plastic knife sold just for this purpose. Metal will make the edges brown.
“If you want same-size cookies, roll and freeze your dough for 10-15 minutes.
Most doughs will harden enough to slice into perfectly uniform slices, and the freezing doesn’t really affect cooking time too much. (Watch your fi rst batch, though.)” -- R.L. in Missouri
If you are reattaching a button to shorts or pants, try using dental fl oss, the unwaxed kind. It’s much stronger, and can hold the button better than regular thread. Use a marker to darken it if the color is an issue.
“Shaving cream can be used as a spot remover for many carpets. Use only a small amount, and follow up
with a damp cloth.” -- D.L. in New Brunswick, Canada
“To prevent a skin from forming on the top of a can of leftover paint, you can infl ate a balloon and stick it in the can, cut a piece of wax paper to fi t or store the can inverted, so that the skin will form on the bottom and stay there when you fl ip it.” -- W.B. in Alabama

WILDFLOWERS (continued):
• Skunk cabbage is a swamp-loving plant that is well named. It blooms in February and March in swampy areas and produces an odd-looking fl ower before producing any leaves. The fl owers resemble pins in a pincushion. When the plant is bruised, it smells awful. • Native Americans used the orange sap of the bloodroot plant to color or paint their faces for warfare or ceremonies and to dye baskets. The fl owers on a bloodroot plant are so delicate that it cannot be picked successfully. The petals fall off with the slightest touch or breeze. The sap comes from the stem.• Mistletoe is a plant we traditionally associate with Christmas. Unlike most wildfl owers that are rooted in soil, this plant is termed a “semi-parasite” because it draws water and minerals from a host plant. It typically grows on hardwood trees in the southern United States producing small white berries coated with a sticky substance that is toxic to humans.• Dodder or Love Vine is unusual because it is a true parasite. Unlike semi-parasitic mistletoe, which produces green leaves, dodder vines are gold in color. Shortly after dodder seeds sprout, root-like structures attach themselves to a host plant, and the dodder plant draws all of its nourishment from the host plant. Common Dutch clover is a host plant for several dodder species.• The Southern or evergreen magnolia is emblematic of the Southern states in America. The fl ower is the State Flower for Louisiana and Mississippi. What some readers may not know is the large size of this fl ower. Flowers range from 7 to 10 inches across — That’s the size of a dinner plate! Also interesting is that magnolia fl owers are pollinated by beetles.• Wildfl ower festivals are popular in many different areas. The 25th Annual Mountain Flower Fine Art & Wine Festival in Dahlonega, Georgia, is held the third weekend in May. The Dahlonega Master Gardeners present wildfl ower displays, walks and tours.• The Mount Pisgah Arboretum in Oregon also has a Wildfl ower Festival in May. Always the Sunday after Mother’s Day, this year’s event will be May 15, 2011. Guided hikes are available, and 300 to 400 species of wildfl owers are displayed.• The Waterton Wildfl ower Festival is a nine-
day event in June at Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, across the border from Glacier National Park. Waterton is an International Peace Park and World Heritage Site. Due to the conjunction of prairie and mountain ecosystems, the park has a truly unique variety of wildfl owers. It is home to more than 50 of Canada’s rarest fl owers including 30 species that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. In fact, Waterton has more fl owers than any other mountain park. The festival has educational courses, art exhibits, workshops, hikes and even horseback rides.• Crested Butte, the offi cial wildfl ower capital of Colorado, began hosting a wildfl ower festival in 1986. Now the week-long celebration has over 200 classes, including art and cooking classes with wildfl owers. The 2011 event is set for July 11-17.• The Wildfl ower! Arts & Music Festival is a multi-day arts and music festival celebrating its 19th anniversary this year. Held north of Dallas in Richardson, Texas, it got its name from the wildfl owers planted throughout the parks, medians and roadsides of Richardson. • Do you know which United States’ First Lady is considered the “Environmental First Lady”? Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson, otherwise known as Lady Bird, was the wife of the 36th President, Lyndon Johnson. (The nickname was supposedly given to her by a nursemaid when she was a child who said she was “as purty as a lady bird.”)• While she was First Lady, Mrs. Johnson created the First Lady’s Committee for a More Beautiful Capital. She wanted to create natural landscaping to preserve the beauty of the nation’s capital. Later she expanded the program to include the entire nation. • In 1982, Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes founded the Lady Bird Johnson Wildfl ower Center, originally called the National Wildfl ower Research Center, “to introduce people to the beauty and diversity of wildfl owers and other native plants.” • The center in Austin, Texas, has public gardens, woodlands and meadows and is an internationally infl uential research center. In 2006, the center became an Organized Research Unit of the University of Texas at Austin. • Wildfl ower research has far-reaching implications. One wildfl ower that has made a huge difference in many lives worldwide is Wild Foxglove,
botanically known as Digitalis purpurea. The medicine derived from this plant is widely used today to treat heart disease. As Lady Bird has said, “Surely there are others like digitalis waiting out there.”• So, whether you’re canoeing down a stream, hiking in the woods, or observing the median on a road trip, notice the wildfl owers. Realize their value to society comes from more than their natural beauty.
