If anyone would like to start saxophone or clarinet lessons then please do get in contact with Miss Whittingham at [email protected]

In music lessons throughout the year boys are encouraged to perform a piece of music that they have been working on in their instrumental lessons in front of their classmates. From Year 1 up to Year 8 I have been enjoying a varied programme of music. This week Mathew Philips performed a rendition of Swan Lake and Enzo Manuel performed two technically difficult pieces on the recorder. Well done boys.

Saxophonists and clarinettists provided a cool soundtrack to our Friday morning. Parents and pupils enjoyed hearing a variety of styles from ballet to rumba.Proceedings were expertly orchestrated by Mr McGovern – the future of woodwind at THS is very bright indeed.

Mr Magil delivered two inspiring drumming workshops

to the Junior and Senior School this week. The boys learnt about the different

parts of the kit, the different sounds you can create and how to play a disco beat compared

to a rock beat. Some very lucky boys were selected to have a go on the drum kit including Jasper Sutton in reception who shouted ‘this is

amazing!’ If anyone else thinks that learning the drums would be an amazing idea then

please do contact Miss Whittinghamat [email protected]

Visitors to the Junior School open afternoon today could not fail to be impressed with a stunning display of ceramics.Under the skilful and watchful tutelage of Mrs Griffiths and Mrs Rau, the Year 2 boys have produced some amazing clay leaves; which after firing in the school kiln have been glazed with beautiful autumnal colours.

On Tuesday 10th of October it was ‘World Mental Health Day’. In music lessons this week we discussed how important it is to be in the moment and take some time to relax. The boys listened to calming music while they closed their eyes and practised mediation breathing exercises. I was astonished at how mature the boys were and what a difference it made to the level of concentration of all the boys for the duration of the music lesson. One boy in Year 1 said ‘I like that I can hear myself think and how calm I feel’ another boy in Year 3 said ‘my lungs feel fuller and I feel lighter’. I learnt a lot from the boys this week and I think starting each lesson with different mindfulness activities is a good idea for all.

Even though it’s still October we are now leading up to the Christmas season. This week in the Senior Choir rehearsal I had the very difficult task of choosing 20 boys to perform at The Bank of England Christmas Fair on the 8th November. Senior Choir now has 75 members and I really wish I could take every boy to sing their hearts out at the fair. Mr Orme was our guest judge and, together with Mr Wolf accompanying the boys on the piano, we managed to select 20 boys who stood out from the crowd. I will be sending a Clarion message, after half term, to the boys involved so that parents are made aware of timings. I want to stress that there will be many more opportunities for boys to perform as part of the choir, ensemble or as a soloist – keep working hard and keep singing!

As Year 1 have been learning all about shops from the past to the present, the boys walked to Sheen High Street yesterday to have a look around. The boys had a look at all the different shops, from supermarkets to toy shops and looked carefully at their different windows too. The boys really enjoyed their little outing!

I have never had so many headlines to write at the midpoint of a term. What a football season it has been. 47 matches played across the school plus many, many more played by 8 teams entered in various tournaments, and with 34 wins or draws, the boys across the school can be very proud. The term began with our most successful tournament season on record and this success has continued with win after win from U8s (Year 3) to the 1st te nam.

Well done to all of the boys who have played so well this term for THS and to all the great results. I must just particularly name check the 1st team who have won all of their matches scoring 17 goals and are really having a brilliant season and playing some fantastic football. To then be unbeaten at both 2nd and 3rd team as well is a magnificent achievement. Brilliant effort from our senior boys. Plenty more fixtures after half term so fingers crossed for more great results after the mid-season break.
