Aldean Tour: Yes They Do Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean kicked off his They Don’t Know Tour with RCA’s Chris Young and Kane Brown over the week-end in Toledo, OH, Fort Wayne, IN and Green Bay, WI. “What a night with Jason,” says Midwest WNCY/Apple-ton-Green Bay, WI MD/morn-ing co-host Charli McKenzie. “You can tell why he was given Entertainer of the Year. I thought the screams were going to make me go permanently deaf. They couldn’t get enough.” In Fort Wayne, Federated WQHK PD/MD midday host Dave Mi-chaels reports Aldean “opened with the new single ‘They Don’t

Big Numbers In Big D Working at a small Dallas directional AM – KBOX, Mac Daniels listened to “All Star Country” KPLX sign on with Willie Nelson’s “Whiskey River” in 1980. Daniels soon went to work for the then-Susquehanna station in nights, rising to MD and
eventually APD. For the duration of his 14-year run, KSCS was “the competition, the enemy,” he says. Returning as PD for both stations in February 2016, Daniels has proved you can go home again – even if the furniture’s been moved around. KPLX has spent the last three months as the market’s No. 1 station 6+ and this March as America’s largest cuming station. KSCS has risen to more than one million cume.
With heritage air staffs on both and minimal differences in the approach to imaging and events, Daniels says music has been the key to both differentiating the stations and to ratings growth. “Texas Country” and “’90s To Now” positioned KPLX is the Hot AC, as Daniels hears it, with a core 25-54 target demo. The station has grown from a 4.4 to 6.0 6+ over the past year. “New Country” KSCS has moved from a shade under a million in 6+ cume a year ago to 1.083 million this March, and is the Top 40-leaning offering aimed 18-49. “But 25-54 is very important on both,” Daniels says. Team (In) Building: Overseeing two Country stations in a market is nothing new for Daniels, who programmed KASE & KVET/Austin for six years after stints at WMZQ/Washington, DC and WYCD/Detroit. Since he lived the battle “back in the day,” Daniels wanted to “reignite the passion on both sides of the halls.” He concentrated on KSCS, since it was striving against the strong Wolf brand. “The KSCS staff was ready,” he says. Mark “Hawkeye” Louis has been on the KSCS morning show since 1988 – he’s the longest running morning personality on the FM band in DFW. His longtime co-host, the late Terry Dorsey, retired in 2014. Louis is now surrounded by youthful co-hosts Jasmine and Konnected K. Michelle Rodriguez started at KPLX in 2004 in promotion and on-air part time, switched to nights at
Cameron Duddy from Big Machine’s Midland puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KROQ/Los Angeles and KRTH/Los Angeles. My scariest memory of radio tour? Perhaps it’s this hotel room I’m in right now. Once, we were with WUBE/Cincinnati’s Grover Collins and we drove across the border into Sugartit, KY. But
that was one of my fondest memories! Without sounding too mushy, after two decades of playing music, it’s really an honor to be out here doing this. All of our promo reps are fun to be around. [Former SVP/Promo] Jack Purcell was our first and I got to spend a lot of time with him. He’s a musician, he plays drums. He turned me on to music I hadn’t heard, while we were driving hundreds of miles. He was a mentor to me. But also, Kris Lamb, he’s like a big brother. And Erik Powell is the drill sergeant/football coach. They’re all really cool. We play modern traditional country music. We’re influenced by ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s country. We like to think of ourselves as a cross between the Eagles and Dwight Yoakam. I’m not really an impulse buyer. Spoiler alert: we’re not making any money right now, so I have to be a good boy on the road and think of my family. But I do have a penchant for cowboy hats, and if I find a good one, it’s hard for me to resist. Only Bob Dylan could have written “Like A Rolling Stone.” But I wish I could’ve been a fly on the wall to see the stream of consciousness that must’ve happened when he wrote that song. It’s probably one of the most powerful songs ever written. We always have a vial of tea tree oil with us on the road. When you’re staying in the world’s worst motels, you sprinkle that on your pillow. It makes the room smell better. I never get annoyed by any interview question, but I guess having to describe the meaning of “Drinkin’ Problem” is sort of annoying. There’s no real meaning. I don’t know if there’s anything deeper than just the hook. If we were on radio tour, I’d love to be stuck in Phoenix. I love the desert heat. If I’m picking anywhere in the world, I’d say Paris. I love that city. No one’s ever “stuck” in Paris.

Know’ and I think from the first note until the end of the show, no one sat down. He was definitely on and glad to be back on stage.” WQHK had Aldean sign a set of “old barstools” for a giveaway. Both McKenzie and Michaels remarked that Kane Brown, drew one of the bigger crowds they had seen for an opening act. “He had people’s attention the minute he started singing,” observed McKenzie. “Kane Brown was the shock of the show,” added Michaels. “Chris Young, as always, was stellar,” says Michaels. He noted that during the first handful of songs, Young spent time signing autographs from the stage and taking selfies with the audience, “The fans loved it.” McKenzie added “The crowd was on their feet his whole set. He sang nine No. 1 songs in a row.” In Green Bay, Aldean’s band performed 22 songs including an encore of “Big Green Tractor” and “She’s Country.” The tour has a new dynamic new backdrop and pyro during Aldean’s set. This week, Aldean is in Texas at the iHeartCountry Festival in Austin and the Off The Rails Country Music Fest in Frisco. The tour kicks back in at Blossom Music Center in Ohio May 12.

The Week’s Top Stories Full coverage in the archives at countryaircheck.com.• Jules Riley added KSD/St. Louis PD duties (4/24).• Fitz exited mornings at KKWF/Seattle (4/24).• Dave Parker was promoted to PD at WUSH/Norfolk (4/25).
Webster Public Relations CEO/President Kirt Webster discusses his most influential music:1. David Frizzell & Shelly West, Celebrity Theater, Phoenix: It was my first concert. The duo had “You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma” out and Shelly was touring off of her hit “Jose Cuervo” and “Flight 309 To Tennessee.” 2. Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton’s Real Love, HBO: Growing up, Kenny and Dolly were
everything country music was. I set a goal to move to Nashville and work for them. Here I am today, representing both artists, knowing everything I dreamed is completely how I envisioned it. 3. Janie Fricke: She was one of my first clients more than 20 years ago. I’ll always remember how she took a chance and gave me the opportunity to pursue my dream of doing PR/publicity for country artists.4. Hank Williams Jr.: I’ve been with Hank Jr. for 17 years. Hank opened doors for a broader, national and even international appeal for my company. He’s truly a trailblazer and I’m thankful for his friendship. 5. George Jones: I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with King George for several years before his passing. I always laughed how he called me “Big Daddy.” It was truly an honor to produce the “The Final No Show” tribute at Bridgestone honoring his legacy. We also had a huge part in planning and broadcasting his memorial service. We miss him every day. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I don’t really listen to Top 40 pop. I’m not familiar with anything that’s “hot” in the pop/R&B genre. • “Important” music you just don’t get: I honestly don’t “get” rap.• An album you listened to incessantly: Kenny Rogers’ Something Inside So Strong. I wore out that tape when I was a teenager listening to it in my car. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: The USA for Africa “We Are The World” collaboration includes some of the biggest icons of all time, like Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper. The coolest thing about that video is picking out the artists we’ve worked with the past 20 years, including the three I just mentioned.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I really love all the ‘80s acts and the timeless music that’s just fun to sing along to, like K.T. Olsin’s “80’s Ladies” or Reba McEntire’s “Little Rock.”
• WUBE/Cincinnati and WYCT/Pensacola won NAB Crystal Awards (4/25).• iHeartCommunications extended its private term loan offers (4/27). • Lola Montgomery is leaving KSJJ/Bend, OR (4/28).

KSCS in 2011 and moved to middays four years ago. APD/MD Trapper does afternoons and is in his ninth year at the station, followed by Cumulus’ Nash Nights Live. At KPLX, Lisa Taylor has been a fixture in mornings since 2007. Daniels added co-host Trey Morgan last year after Skip Mahaf-fey departed (CAT 8/17/16). Morgan was raised in Dallas and
returns after stops in Boston, New York and Los Angeles, among others. APD/MD/middayer Smokey Rivers has been at the station for 21 years. The staff is rounded out by 10 year station vet Mark Phillips in afternoons, night jock Bill Bowen and Cumulus’ Blair Garner in overnights. Image Is Everything: Positioning may be different, but Dan-iels pushes a high-energy, fast-paced, freshly packaged imaging concept for both stations. The cluster’s Randall Wright juggles those demands. Voices on KPLX are Barry Corbin, Lynne Hoffman and Pat Garrett, while KSCS utilizes Dave Foxx, Allan Peck and KellyKellyKelly. Event differentiation is important, though tempered by a balance that favors neither. “Wolf has 10 Man Jam at Billy Bob’s

Texas and Texas Mardi Gras at Fair Park,” he says. “KSCS has a series of New Faces shows during the year.” The KSCS Country Fair has been retooled as CountryFest. Daniels also splits up the club shows between the stations based on the artists – who’s on the air where, for instance – and the specific station calendars. Both are at the venues, but only one station’s personalities go onstage. Both stations have presence for the big concerts at the outdoor amphi-theatre, soccer stadium, the 5,000 seat Verizon Theatre and American Airlines Center. On the community service side, KPLX hosts an annual St. Jude Radiothon and KSCS works with Cooks Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. Music Dialed: As for Daniels’ most significant changes, “Making the music consistent was key,” he says. “It helps having Smokey and Trapper doing the logs, but I eyeball them daily. The shift in Cumulus allowing local level music decisions also helped.” According to Media-base, KPLX is 36% current and KSCS is 34% current. KPLX is 21% recurrent and KSCS is 45%, while gold titles flip flop – 43% for KPLX and 21% for KSCS. KPLX is spinning 39 current titles seven or more times per week, with 29 recurrents at that pace and 240 gold titles spinning more than once per week. There are two current songs playing
50+ times a week, three in the 40-50 spins-a-week range, three titles play 30-40 times a week and six in the 20-30 count. KSCS plays 27 current unique songs seven or more times per week, 41 recurrents at seven-plus and only 116 gold more than once per week. Three current songs are spinning 60+ times, eight titles in the 30-40 range and four in the 20-30 weekly spin category. KPLX’s local flair is clear with Aaron Watson as the fifth most-played current last week, Casey Donahew twelfth and Cody Johnson thirteenth. That compares to the KSCS list where Watson is ninth, Johnson eleventh and Donahew has no airplay. To refer-ence the three Texans’ music from a national view, on this week’s published chart Watson is at No. 44, with Johnson and Donahew uncharted. As for Texas-based gold and recurrents, the only acts seeing more than one spin a week are on KSCS: Josh Abbott Band’s “Wasn’t That Drunk” and Randy Rogers Band’s “Kiss Me In The Dark,” both of which were worked nationally. Overall, the approach is working nicely, and that may be un-derstatement in an national ratings environment in which Country has seen annual declines. There are no complaints from Daniels. “It feels great to be back,” he says. “To be with this all-star team full of hard-working passionate people – some days it feels like I never left.” –Paul Williams

These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporters and Activator stations based on audience estimates from the Spring 2017 Nielsen Audio ratings. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of AQH Persons. The weights are calculated using this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing the ad- justed AQHP by a number that is 10% of the leading Country station’s AQH. This calculation assigns a weight for each panelist on a 1-10 scale. These new weights are effective today
