Introduction

November 2020

Walking around our wonderful town I have noticed an abundance of dog owners exercising their pets in the town and around Needham Lake. If you are a dog walker please would you ensure you always go prepared by taking a poo bag with you, at all times. If you are unable to supply

your own bag there are free bag dispensers located around Crowley Park which you are welcome to use. There really is nothing worse than, particularly for children, stepping in dog mess. Please help us try and keep the town pleasant, clean and litter free.

Very disappointingly but entirely necessary in the circumstances that prevail, key aspects of the Remembrance Sunday Service in the town have had to be severely scaled down. There will be no procession along the High Street and St John’s Church will conduct an appropriate service on the day, but with limited numbers in attendance, in compliance with the Government’s COVID-19 rules (see * below). The local branch of the Royal

British Legion will conduct a short commemoration service, at the town’s War Memorial, to pay respect to those that have gone before us and made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Town Council has considered including broad information and advice on COVID-19 in its newsletter. It has not done so for a number of reasons, not least as copy for the newsletter is written some time before it is published and it is likely therefore, with the situation being consistently fluid, we may put out misleading and/or out-of-date material. I am sure most residents will be keeping an eye on news media to keep themselves informed at this crucial time. If there is a need for a COVID-19 issue to be raised or responded to locally, then contact the Town Clerk who will be able to advise or point you to where you can obtain advice. The most reliable source for online information remains the Government UK web site, www.gov.uk or, if you haven’t got access to the internet, local TV, radio and other media.

Stay safe and please look after yourselves.

Cllr Steve PhillipsNeedham Market TownMayor/Chairman of Council*The St John’s Remembrance Service will be streamed live, or can be watched later, on YouTube. Access is on the ‘Needham Market Parish Church’ channel.

Two pictures of flowers on the High Street with St. John’s in the background, taken by David Campbell.

By the time you read this, Halloween will probably have gone already. The days are getting shorter and the leaves are falling from the trees.

It is during this time of year that the colours around Needham Market, particularly at the Lake, are spectacular. Please do take a few moments to look around you, breath in the fresh air and appreciate what we have in this town of ours.

Our shops are preparing for Christmas and decorating their windows. The Christmas trees will soon be installed on the lamp standards, and the High Street will take on a completely different look.

It is mainly volunteers that will be responsible for this change and I, for one, am grateful for all the effort that goes into making this town one of the best Christmas scenes around.

Well done one and all!Steve Phillips

Mayor’s Report

Gipping Women’s ClubAt this time of the year, normally we would be holding a Christmas crafts evening. Here’s what we might have been creating this month. The idea came from table displays we saw when enjoying festive meals at The Chequers, Great Blakenham and at The Limes. You might like to give it a go for yourselves or with the grandchildren. Take a large wine glass (up to you whether you fill it first and drink the contents to put yourself in the mood), turn it upside down onto a plastic cap (e.g. top from a Pringles tube or takeaway coffee), fill the inside of the glass with glittery stuff, put some more sparkly things around the glass, place tinsel and possibly a battery operated night light on the top of the glass (what is actually the base) and hey, presto, a table decoration. I’m sure you’ll be able to make a much prettier one than my example in the attached photo.

We hope that all our members and their loved ones are keeping safe and well.

Community News...St Elizabeth Hospice Shop

High Street, Needham Market

Thank you to all our shoppers for your patience. I find it so difficult to explain to people that they can’t come into the shop as we have our allocation of customers but we all know that we have to follow guidelines to protect us all. It’s still very difficult to do though! We really do appreciate you either waiting or coming back later.

The same applies to donations and, again, we appreciate your support and patience in these difficult times. As I write, we are still unable to take donations in the shop due to COVID-19 but please watch the notices in the window along with details on the St Elizabeth Hospice website and social media.

The Stowmarket store is now taking donations 10am-1pm however please call before donating due to capacity. You can ring the team 10am-4pm, Monday to Saturday on 01449 615808. Martlesham and Holywells Retail Centres continue to accept donations from 10am-1pm. You do not need to ring ahead if you are donating to these locations. For more information on donating, please visit the St Elizabeth Hospice website.

We are still receiving COVID-19 safe donations through the internal system, so we still have regular stock changes. We now have lots of lovely warm clothes in such as coats, jumpers, cardigans, scarves and gloves. Our range of new socks is always popular, especially the ones with the soft grip to stop them cutting into the legs, the thick ones for boots and our wellington socks.

We also have a good range of pet toys, which you might want to stock up on for your pet’s Christmas! Which leads me nicely into a reminder that we still have our Christmas cards on sale along with donations of other Christmas items including books, jigsaws, CDs, DVDs and decorations.

Thank you again for your patience and support at this difficult time. We look forward to seeing you in the shop in November.

Marion Gibbons, volunteer

1st Needham Market & Barking Guides, like many others, will be unable to take part in the Remembrance Day Parade and Church service this year. However, we are still going to pay our respects by decorating pebbles with poppies and leaving them around the town. Each person named on the Needham war memorial will be included on a stone. We hope you enjoy spotting them as you walk around the town. Why not create some of your own and include the names of your own family heroes?

If any girls aged 10-14 would like to join us, we meet Tuesday 6.30 to 8.30 at Christchurch. Contact Sam on 07725 018909 for more details.

Needham W.I.As Robert Burns said - The best laid plans of mice and men etc - because of the current restrictions our get together / coffee morning had to be cancelled and we are not planning anything until after Christmas. We are trying to work out if we can hold the annual meeting via Zoom but as I am writing this at the beginning of October there is nothing happening at the moment. Keep an eye open for emails on the subject. Some of us have met together in socially distanced groups of up to six occasionally and if you would like to join in please let me or any committee member know.

I must just say how sad it was to hear of Maggie Baxter’s death - we shall miss her smiling face at our meetings.

I thought I would share this apple cake recipe with you - it’s good as a cake but also as a dessert warmed up with cream or custard.

10 oz S.R. flour8 oz Demerara sugar2 oz raisins4 oz melted butter

Oven 180c / 350f / gas 4

Grease and line an 8 inch square cake tin. Method sift flour into bowl and stir in sugar and raisins - mix in the melted butter, eggs, milk and apples and beat until smooth. Put in the tin and bake for about an hour until cake springs back when lightly pressed. Dust with icing sugar if you wish - you can also add a teaspoon of cinnamon with the flour if you like - we don’t like cinnamon so I don’t put it in. Enjoy!

One of these days we’ll get back to meeting at the centre on the second Monday in the month but until then STAY SAFE!

Throughout COVID Needham Market Skatepark Committee have continued to run.

We have the initial plan for the Skatepark (subject to minor amendment) which was published in last month's newsletter.

We are currently working through grant applications to enable us to be fully secure and start work.

The Committee is always looking for new committed members so if you are interested in getting involved please contact Paul on 07722 475502.

Our Facebook page is maintained and updated so keep your eyes open for any further updates.

If the Needham Market Christmas Fayre takes place, we are ready to have a stall and support the community, so hopefully see you all there.

Community News...

Bosmere Primary SchoolIt has been truly lovely to have had a month back at school and have Bosmere full of children again! It hasn’t been without its challenges and the restrictions that have (quite rightly) to be in place have impacted on children and staff alike, however, we are all here and we are all learning and doing our best! The children certainly continue to seem to be happy to be in the routine of school life and provide many reasons to smile each day!

The year started with the whole school reconnecting. Children learnt alongside others in their class or phase of classes, among other things, reading a beautiful book called ‘Here we are’ by Oliver Jeffers. This inspired lots of vibrant discussion and creative thinking, alongside some rather lovely activities and experiences. We also launched Jigsaw, our new whole school approach to PSHE and RSE, commencing with the theme of ‘Being me in my world’-it could not have been better timed!

Mindfulness JournalsAs part of the launch of Jigsaw, the children have all created their own mindfulness journal, something they will contribute to throughout their time at Bosmere, adding to it year upon year.

Aspen Class here are using a variety of art techniques to create their journals, the inspiration for which was ‘Here we are’ by Oliver Jeffers. In fact, children across the whole of our school have designed their own journals. Aspen class explored mixing and blending paints, sketched sea creatures and emotion monsters and used leaf rubbings to add detail.

September in ReceptionOak class have really settled well into School life at Bosmere. They have all been working hard on their independence (putting on their coats by themselves) and learning routines (such as having PE and eating in the Dining Hall). They have had a great time learning and collaborating in the classroom, outside area and in the forest!

Community News...

With the virus back again and socialising restrictions in place it’s sad to hear that unscrupulous thieves are taking advantage of the situation. Apparently, they are targeting people living alone and asking if they can help them out by doing their shopping etc. It’s an easy way for them to get access into your property and in some cases obtaining your credit cards. If you are living alone or unable to get out and about and somebody you don’t know knocks at your door or phones you up enquiring if there’s anything you need and can they help just say no thank you and quickly close the door or put the phone down. Friends, neighbours or relations are the only people you can really trust to come into your house or to do your shopping. If you have a neighbour living alone nearby or an elderly couple please do get to know them and let them have your telephone number so if they need advice or help you are there for them. Incidentally the thieves get to know where vulnerable people live by getting a lot of information from social media and careless talk. Once or twice I’ve seen on Facebook people inadvertently advertising the fact that their granny lives

alone or an elderly couple from down the road. Do be careful not to give personal information such as this away. Due to the Virus there are many, mainly elderly, people reluctant to go out shopping nowadays or go for a walk into town and they have been persuaded by their grandchildren to purchase a laptop or tablet. It may be fine for keeping in touch with your friends and relations using the Internet and Facebook; also for ordering your shopping online but it is fraught with danger. You need to be so careful of the various scams that can catch you out. Never open an attachment that comes from a company you don’t know or use, and do check with your relations that you know exactly what you are doing if you use your credit card on line to buy goods. Remember there is always help available if you need it. Traditionally Needham Market has always been regarded as a town that looks after its residents and if we all do get to know our neighbours and help them when and if they need help, long will it remain so.

Trevor Gibbons Chairman

Needham Market Neighbourhood Watch...

Only a few weeks ago we were enjoying a late summer but all of a sudden everyone is getting ready for Christmas!

Halloween and Bonfire Night look as if they will not be able to happen in the traditional way so, like so many shops we have started to put out our Christmas Stock and what a selection we have! Lots of brand new items that will make great gifts but as usual, all at very low prices. Tree decorations, cards, jigsaws and books all with a Christmas theme are also now available. Also in stock we have disposable face masks at £1.00 for a pack of 10 and hand sanitiser at 80p. per bottle or 2 for £1.50. We also have new sets of Christmas pyjama’s from only £3.50 a set and packs of Christmas Socks at £2.50 for a pack of 5.

This year we may not be able to make our annual trip to Belarus to deliver the Christmas Stocking program to the children but everything is safely stored and as soon as travel becomes possible we will be off. We know the children who receive these gifts will appreciate them just as much whether we get there in December, January or February, they will be waiting!

Although we do not get involved in matters of politics I must just touch on the situation in Belarus, some of you may have seen or read some articles in the news regarding

the recent elections. Without going into detail I can tell you that what you may have heard does not give true representation of what has actually been taking place. People are suffering terrible retribution for just expressing an opinion the state does not agree with, human rights do not exist, as I am writing this message I received an update that the Head of the Transplantation department at the Children’s Cancer hospital has been arrested and put into prison for the crime of joining a video appeal on behalf of doctors opposing the state violence, detainment and torture of ordinary people. She is the only qualified consultant in the whole of the department which means all procedures and treatment that need her input have had to be stopped.

There are so many charitable causes that are all in desperate need of support, our charity is not widely known, we do not advertise and receive no funding other than what we can raise ourselves. Many people will say charity begins at home but please, do give a thought to the Children and families of Chernobyl.

Thank you

Community News...

Needham Market Entertainment Company

Sadly, the management team at Needham Market Entertainment Company have had to make the very sad decision that for the first time in 23 years there will not be a pantomime in our programme this season. We are absolutely gutted that we’ve had to reach this decision but the safety of our company and beloved audience will always come first and we hope that we will be able to see you all in person again in 2021/22.

HOWEVER, our technical team have been playing over the summer and as a result we are REALLY excited to tell you that we will be bringing you 2 virtual productions over the winter. Our first will be a Murder Mystery - The Parchers, which will be released over half term. The second, in February, will be a Variety Show, showcasing the wonderful talent of the Needham Market Entertainment Company! Something to look forward to!

Access For All CampaignThe fact that the train operator, Greater Anglia, submitted a successful bid for funding at the station earlier in 2020 is due in no small measure to the efforts of the Access for All campaign group. Support from the district and county councils was crucial, as was the backing of constituency MP Jo Churchill, but it was the tenacity of the campaign group - never taking no for an answer - that made the rail industry sit up and take notice.I have acted as chair of the campaign for the past year, taking over from Wendy Marchant who worked hard to get the campaign up and running. And the campaign would never have achieved the impact it had without the energy and drive of Jen Overett, a local resident with a passionate sense of social justice. The group has worked over a number of years to raise the profile of the campaign in the Needham community. Its members are drawn from that community. Whilst they include councillors from several different political persuasions, all committed to working together to achieve success, the campaign has made a point of working in a way that goes beyond party badges. And it includes individuals who have no specific political affiliation - people serving on the group have been united by the common goal of making life fairer and easier for a wide range of potential travellers to and from Needham station. It is worth adding that we are still some way off getting better arrangements in place at the station, and the campaign group will continue to work with all relevant parties, including local councillors, to ensure the station actually gets the improved facilities that are now promised. We are not giving up now!If any readers are interested to learn more about the campaign, please contact me - [email protected]. Support is always very welcome.

Town Council News...

Vacant Town Council SeatsTwo Town Council seats remain vacant should you have an interest in becoming a Town Councillor. Please feel free to contact me to express that interest or to have an initial discussion about what being a Town Councillor entails. Contact details for the Town Council Office are shown on the inside cover of this Newsletter.

Crowley Park – Appointment of Park KeeperThe Town Council has appointed Sam Hart to the part-time role of Park Keeper. Sam will also carry out activities around the town, particularly where the upkeep of Town Council property is necessary, plus when and where typical seasonal ‘hotspots’ occur (e.g. leaf fall, icy surfaces and overgrowth). Sam is an enthusiastic young person and his engagement is a very welcome addition to the very small band (i.e. our two longstanding Litter Pickers) of Town Council employees who help keep our town clean and safe.

Launch of New Telephone Support Line to help those with financial, job or housing worriesThe following advice has been received from Suffolk County Council:

A phoneline will go live on 1 October 2020 to help people across Suffolk access information or support relating to debt, benefits, housing or employment.

This support service is in response to the financial impact that Covid-19 has had, and continues to have, on people across Suffolk. It is estimated that the number of people claiming Universal Credit in Suffolk has increased by 75% (approx. 24,000) since March and there has been a 238% increase in the amount of food handed out to single adults and families from Suffolk’s foodbanks. There are also 104,000 people still furloughed from their jobs.

Citizens Advice Suffolk Alliance, which includes the eight Citizens Advice Bureaus across Suffolk, and Anglia Care Trust and Ipswich Housing Action Group will deliver advice and support to people through a single phoneline. Call handlers will use resources and information from across many Suffolk organisations and specialist providers, which can be tailored to individual needs. The phoneline is funded by Suffolk Public Sector Leaders and has been developed by Suffolk-wide partners on the Collaborative Communities Covid-19 Board, which is part of the Suffolk Resilience Forum.

The phoneline, 0800 068 3131, is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

On-street Parking – What the Highway Code saysThe Highway Code, paragraph 243 states: DO NOT stop or park opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space.

This is clearly not being observed in many locations in the town. The Police have been monitoring the situation and, where and when they see examples, they may penalise those responsible. The effect of cars parked either too close to or directly opposite junctions is blatantly obvious and causes danger, frustration and anger. Please always consider other road users if you are parking a vehicle on-street.

Planning MattersLand to the rear of 29 to 47 School StreetThe Town Council has received a Notification of works to trees in a Conservation Area – Removal of trees, relating to the above area of land that for many years has remained untouched and within which a wildlife habitat has been created. At the time of writing, an agreement has been made with the District Council to extend the period in which the Town Council can submit comments on the Notification. The extension allows members of the public the opportunity to attend the Town Council meeting being held on Wednesday 21st October and to voice their view on the proposed works to the trees and the impact it will have on the land in question and more generally. I will report further on the outcome of the meeting and the Town Council’s position in the next Newsletter.

Kevin Hunter, Town Clerk
