Digital RaDio (DaB+) launches 1st of MayDigital Radio will initially roll out in the 5 major cities starting this May. Sydney has already been receiving test signals, but the official launch will involve Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
The launch of digital radio has almost slipped through the radar, but as interference issues are sorted and new models released, expect a bucket load more advertising… and rightly so, the advantages are significant.
Firstly, Digital Radio (DAB+) means you can listen to radio in digital clarity. Other countries saw the introduction of lower grade DAB radio, however Australia will leapfrog these countries with the vastly superior DAB+ standard, using MPEG4 to deliver the highest quality radio featuring MPEG4 benefits like error correction and the ability to support scrolling text.
For a company that started with Radio, this is a very significant event. We’ll have the Sangean radios and the first Grundig radio on offer. It is possibly the first place that you’ll actually be able to audition DAB+ radio in Melbourne!!!The exciting models on offer are:
The Hi-Fi component styled Sangean WFT1D+ will be on demonstration in our sound room. Not only will you receive DAB+ radio, but you can also receive internet radio and even stream music from your PC or internet wirelessly or via an Ethernet connection!
Changing over to digital TV reception? The Digiair is probably the best field strength meter we’ve seen. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a basic piece of hardware and has it’s limitations, but for the vast majority of jobs (particularly in metropolitan areas), it does everything that’s required.
Who should use it and when?Anyone can use it whenever they are setting up a new antenna, changing over to digital TV or anyone experiencing symptoms of poor signal such as poor analogue reception or pixilation on digital. It will not fix problems, but it certainly is a useful tool in assessing and diagnosing signal or signal issues.
So, what does it do and what doesn’t it do?It gives a nice simple dB reading for the inputted channels, a pass ‘OK’ and even has a basic spectrum analyser where you can select all your free to air channels and assess your signal across the whole spectrum. It’s doesn’t give a bit error rate, which will affect jobs in remote areas requiring masthead or distribution amplifiers. Having said that, when going digital, you of course, always avoid using amplifiers.
How do you work a basic field strength meter?Just choose the channels that you want to receive and away you go!
How do you know what channels?Go to the ACMA website pictured here [www.acma.gov.au]. You can select your area i.e. Someone in Melbourne would pick Melbourne (Mt. Dandenong) or South Yarra. From there, you can check your digital channels i.e. 6, 8, 11, 12 and 29 and punch the numbers into the DigiAir.
Why are these not more common? The Digiair is a basic solution costing $500 inc. for trade ($750 inc for retail). They are too expensive.

Being an importer and developer of digital television products since 2003, Radio Parts has maintained an keen interest in the Freeview logo. After a big Freeview campaign on free-to-air TV, we have also received many questions from you guys too! Unfortunately, despite our best intentions, some details have still baffled us, but lets have a bash at explaining our interpretation!
The media releases tell us that Freeview is intuitive run by the television networks to provide a ‘public voice’ for the TV industry, formed to promote free-to-air television. What does that mean? Does this make them just a corporate PR company with brand labels or will it offer us something of substance? Firstly, to dispel a myth. Freeview doesn’t entitle you to extra channels. Any high definition set top box like the STB5HD or PVR2HD will give you just as many TV channels. Freeview still hopes that people will feel safe and secure about digital TV, in part, because of the Freeview branding. In essence, the first round of Freeview marketing revolves around the idea that the Freeview logo also means future proofing. As per the DAB+ radio article, much of the world is moving across to the superior MPEG4 format. Australia [in the sense of free-to-air TV] has been criticised for supporting the older MPEG2 standard. Freeview initially required that both standards would need to be supported, thus providing future proofing.
Good idea - why not support all formats? This requirement has however been modified. Some confidential correspondence late in February indicated that the requirement for MPEG4/H.264 video HD 720x576 is not required & has been removed. There are a bunch of other future proofing requirements in order to receive Freeview approval. We would consider these as basic features such as:
∏ Support for standard and high definition TV∏ A minimum hard drive size of 160GB for PVRs∏ For TVs and boxes with LAN support: Wireless 802.11G or better and for wired 100baseT or better (which is standard)
There are a few questionable requirements also, like the minimum skip time of 10 minutes and limitations on the speed of fast forward and rewind. Seemingly an attempt to prevent us from skipping commercials!
Many people claim that Channel 9 initiated the whole exercise and still maintain control of Freeview - this is speculation?Freeview maintain that control is now shared between the TV networks. Besides, Channel9 view doesn’t sound as appealing!
If you see a TV or set top box on the shelves of a retail floor, is it really of benefit to you or just the same as the rest and a few dollars most expensive?I guess the Freeview logo might help products distinguish themselves from shady no name internet models. Other than that, you’ll need to pay a hefty price for the logo. It also necessitates some limitations like the skip times. It provides some basic comfort, but might jeopardise value for money, so the jury is still out!
