Last week Y6 went on a residential holiday to Llangollen,

Wales. We went on several activities such as, canoeing, gorge

walking, two castle walks and

many more. These were all great fun activities to do and we are

very thankful to the helpers who

worked extra hours for us.

Year 6 Residential

On the very last night Y6 had an

awesome disco, everyone was dancing and singing. There were a

couple of songs from 'Grease'

where the boys had to find a girl to dance with, it was very funny to watch. Most girls just danced

with other girls.

Dinas Bran and Beeston were two castles that we walked through with everyone taking lots of pictures (we were surprised that the children had any pictures left). The castles were on top of very steep mountains that everyone had to climb to see the ruins and

castles up close.

It was very fun and nearly everyone went hyperactive including the teachers. Mr Postlethwaite and Mr Watson had a sherbet eating race which Mr Postlethwaite won.

SEAL Theme - Changes

This week in assembly the children have been introduced to the theme of Changes/Moving On as a build up to the first visits to their new classes, teachers and in Y6 children's case, their new school.

We talked about change and the feelings it sometimes leads to - both good and bad.Please help us to try to support your child with this theme by sharing your experiences of “Change” and how they can

manage the feelings as well as coping positively with them.

Dragons’ Den

Throughout the last week, the children of Norwood have been learning all about enterprise skills, as part of our

‘Norwood’s Next Big Thing!’ The children have learnt all about products, marketing, planning etc. All this knowledge has

lead to them designing a product that could be of use in the school. Once the product was designed the children had to

write their pitch to present to their class and the winning pitch was to go to the Dragons’ Den on Friday.

The panel of Dragons was Mrs Knight (Chair of Governors), Reverend Knight, Colin Lee (Business and Enterprise at Meols

Cop) and Rob Owens, a local entrepreneur. The children completed their pitches in front of the Dragons and were then

questioned about their product. Amazingly, the range of products was varied and there were some excellent ideas. The

Dragons were simply blown away with the standard of both the product and presentations and decided that they couldn’t

just pick one winner.

From Years 2 and 3 the winners were Elliot Howard and Jamie Shaw, with the product named ‘Flower Wall of Facts’. This

idea involved 2 greenhouses which would grow plants, flowers and vegetables that could be sold to parents etc. There

would be a variety of facts on the pots to help educate the children.

From Years 4 and 5 the winners were Alex Mackey, Cerys Valentine and Astrid Travis, with the product called ‘Super Jet

Bag!. This was a streamline bag that would fit on the back of a chair. Inside the bag would be a pen, pencil, ruler, and

whiteboard etc – everything you would need for a lesson.

The winning children won a ‘Get Out of Class Free Card’, that entitles them to leave any lesson of their choice over the

next few weeks.

The Dragons said that the children were a credit to the school and they were phenomenally impressed to see a primary

school involved in an enterprise project. Thank you to all those young entrepreneurs! You did us proud!

Last Tuesday, four children from Year 4 attended a tennis tournament at The Argyle Tennis Club.

They competed against nine other Southport schools, and even though they did not win, the children showed superb attitude and behaviour.

They were a credit to Norwood! Here they are, pictured with their certificates.

Children in the Spotlight

Shinewaves Competition Time

Last week’s competition was to make a tree from recycled materials. Again there were brilliant entries. A special mention goes to Joshua Bunting for his creative ‘Breakfast Tree’. But, this

week’s winner is a team effort by Robert and Emily Watson, who even recycled their newsletter to make leaves for their tree. Congratulations!

This week’s competition is a photography competition. You are looking for a great close-up photograph of an insect. For ideas and information take a look at HYPERLINK "http://www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk" www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk. You will find previous

competition winning photographs and ‘fun stuff’ to do.

Parents will have received a letter this week to inform them which classes will be open and

which classes are closed.

The threat of rain all afternoon did not spoil the big smiles and loud cheers as the girl's cricket team won

4 out of 4 matches to reach the final of the Southport Primary Schools Cricket tournament at Southport and

Birkdale Cricket Club.

The rules: Each team has 8 players who bat for two overs in pairs. Each team starts with 200 points and

gains points for runs they make and lose 5 points for every time they are out.

The third game was to be the closest against Farnborough Road with our 236 runs just beating their 232 runs, thanks to wonderful batting by Lucy Berry with 10 and superb bowling and fielding by Abi Wright with 3 wickets. The final game

was to be the most important as we met a Shoreside team who also had won 3 games out of 3. Our score of 232 was down to Natasha's superb 12 but was our lowest score yet. Our fielding and catching had to be good to win and they

were, with 2 catches by Anya Day and one each by Elise Bond, Natasha Leadbetter, Lucy Berry, Ria Milford and Georgia

Lonsdale. Shoreside finished with a score of 181 runs.

In the final we played an excellent St. Philips team whose bowling, catching and fielding were outstanding and our score

was not enough to win the match, but the girls did superbly well to win four matches and had a wonderful afternoon out of school.

After scoring 257 runs against Bishop David Sheppard with Natasha Leadbetter top scoring with 9 runs, the girls won by 43 runs as BDS only managed 214 runs.

In game two against Kew Woods, our team scored 251 with Aimee Crawford hitting the best shot and being top scorer. However it was Caris Dixon's catch and run out which kept Kew Woods at 222.

Staffing News

We are delighted to report that Mrs Baron will be returning to work next week after recovering from cancer. It will be superb to see her back at Norwood where she belongs and we are sure you will join us in wishing her a huge welcome

back as she begins her phased return to work over the next few weeks, in preparation for taking her new class on in September.

On another bright note, we will soon be welcoming back Mrs Brown and Mrs Norris, two of our smashing housekeeping

team, who help keep our school so clean and tidy. Both are returning after illness and we are glad to see them back and wish them well.

Y5 Visit to Greenbank High School

On Wednesday 8th June, Norwood’s Y5 pupils went to Greenbank High School for an enterprise. Our topic was newspapers. We started off doing the team name, newspaper name, a logo and a slogan. After that we chose the jobs for the group.

The jobs were two journalists, two photographers & designers and a sub editor and an editor.Then we got to have a break in the rain!

When we came back in, the drama production performed a show. The journalists had to write down as much information as possible. The head line was, Bill Turner Keeps High School Kids Held Hostage and He Is Armed…

Not long after that, we went to the ICT room to make the front page. We had an hour and a half to do so. Then the editor checked it. After that, we went back into the library for the presentation.

The team that won was The Daily Ketchup!They each received a gift from the Head Mistress of Greenbank.

Then we went back to our lovely school.Our favorite part was the ICT room.

Brake’s Giant Walking BusOn Wednesday 15th June 2011 at 10am Norwood Primary School pupils took part in Brake's Giant Walking Bus. The aim is

to raise awareness of road safety with a special emphasis on driver's lowering their speed around schools.

Joe Morris from Sefton's Road Safety team delivered a special assembly before the children set off and traffic control officer, Mike Abram and local community support officers ensured the children were safe as they took the protest to the

streets of Southport.
