DIARY My holiday to America with my family was amazing! We were away nearly 4 weeks, jumping from New York to Washington DC, then to Orlando, finishing in Las Vegas. It was so very nice to walk into GK yesterday though and be greeted by my beautiful students with smiles and welcome back greetings. I am a very fortunate individual to work at such a lovely place. While I was away my terrific staff did an amazing job in keeping things moving as it would normally. Phillip Banks has commented on what a lovely school community we have and I thank him for his leadership and support in my absence. Now I’m ready to enjoy the rest of Term 4 with what I know will be a plentiful term of excitement and busyness. 2016 Planning This term moves us firmly into planning diligently for our 2016 year. We are currently looking at projected enrolments, which includes our 2016 Prep cohort, staffing, class structures and of course budgets that align to all of this. We are also in the process of moving through the process of appointing a 2016 Assistant Principal which is an exciting task. You can help with our 2016 planning by informing us: • in writing, if your child/ren will not be attending GK in 2016. • if you have a 2016 Prep child who will be attending GK but as yet is not enrolled. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s class placement in 2016, please forward and email or letter to the school addressed to me. Please note that we only take into consideration concerns/requests that could be detrimental to the educational and social wellbeing of the students. These requests will be considered but not guaranteed. CAMPS The Grade 5 & 6 Camp have been successful this week with a team of staff and enthusiastic GK students heading to Camp Adanac at Yarra Junction. Our Grade 6 students returned yesterday from their three day trip and our Grade 5 students will complete their camping experience tomorrow afternoon. Our Grade 3 & 4 students head away next week to Mt Evelyn. Thank you to Sherryn Owen, Leigh Fatchen, Mary Green, David Blackburn, Shannon Whelan, Daniel Boulton, Aimee Deacon and Shirley Borg for their attendance and energy output this week. Next week Sandra Febbraro, Anna Kapnoullas, Katherine Graham, Tamara Brown, Hannah Longo and Amy Johnson will be picking up the reins and ensuring the Grade 3 & 4 camps are wonderful—thank you in advance. And to all the wonderfully supportive parents who have volunteered their time, I thank you for providing our staff and students with support during these tiring ventures. This term, as part of our Science and Sustainability Focus, GK will be having an
ECO-MORNING On Wednesday, 11th November from 8.50am-10.50am
(followed by a whole school assembly in the courtyard for Remembrance Day.)
And Parents/Grandparents/Carers are INVITED too!!
(sorry no toddlers during the eco activities)
Lead by teachers, students will be working in their communal groups to clean up or beautify an area in our school grounds.
This may be:
• Targeting an area outside their classroom that would benefit from some pruning, weeding,
painting or artwork.
• Using recycled materials to make artwork for our school gardens.
• Contribute to the establishment of a ‘sensory garden’ behind the chook shed. This space will
include a path of painted tiles designed by students and sections for each of the senses –
touch, smell, taste, touch and hearing.
• Do some ‘yarn bombing’ or fence art to beautify our fences especially down in the community
garden area.
• Paint concrete areas.
• Work on an area of the school that you think could do with some TLC—such as the
teachers courtyard behind the Ochre Room, garden beds at the front of the school.
Rie has LOTS of ideas and projects that need doing but firstly she would like to give teachers the opportunity to come up
with an activity that is FUN, easy to accomplish within two hours, requires only recycled materials or minimal resources
(some funding can be provided). Keep in mind we only have a small supply of shovels, secateurs and buckets so everyone
can’t garden and weed!
Have a think, talk to others. You may want to join up with someone else to work on a project together. Overall this is sup-
posed to be FUN and celebrate GK’s achievements in becoming a 5 Star Sustainable School!!!!!!!!!!!
In A3 poster will be put up in the staffroom for you to jot down activity, area and resources required . This will need to be
done by Monday 2nd November, otherwise Rie will allocate you a project (with consultation of course)
PREP ENROLMENTS
We are currently trying to finalise prep numbers for 2016. If you or a family you know have a child intending to attend Glen Katherine P.S next year and have not yet enrolled, we would appreciate it if you could drop in at the GK office and talk to the office staff.
Jenny or Louise would be happy to help you out by either collecting your enrolment paper work or providing you with the necessary forms. This would help us facilitate planning for next year.
Feel free to give the school a ring on 9431 1599 if you have any queries.
