The company has been reducing staff numbers for the past 10 years. In 2002, there were 6,200 employees – now there are 4,100. He said that costs were €413.3m in 2008 and were €344m in 2011. This won’t come as surpris- ing news to the staff as Mr Kenny con- firmed that a voluntary redundancy scheme has been on the table to all staff across the board since April of this year. These 450 jobs count for a massive 11 per cent of all staff around the country. Mr Kenny said that it was Irish Rail’s aim to “break even” by 2015, but to do that costs would have to continue to be cut. The company’s revenue had been €220.9m in 2008 and €182.1m in 2011. This seems like a big task for a company showing losses on its books especially since public subven- tion for the company has dropped drasti- cally from €191.2m in 2008 to €135.7m this year. There are also plans to further reduce subvention for Iarnród Éireann in the 2013 and 2014 Government budgets A spokesperson for Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said that they are well aware of the financial difficulties of CIE (which includes Dublin bus and Iarnród Éireann) which has been “de- clining” over the past couple of years due to “reduced subvention, higher fuel costs and falling passenger numbers”. The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Brian Hayes has an-nounced major changes for the Winter Solstice in Newgrange Cham-ber on December 21st. Minister Hayes stat-ed “Admission to Newgrange on December 21st has been traditionally done from a draw

– entered by thousands of peo-ple around the world. This year alone there were 30,000 entrants, proof of the endur-ing popularity of this amazing annual cultural showpiece.”Minister Hayes continued, “This year however I have re-duced the number of tickets in the draw and will instead offer six lucky school children along with their parent/guardian the opportunity to enter New-

grange Chamber and witness this spectacular event. In order to enter the competition the OPW will be running an Art Competition for school chil-dren aged 10 years and over.” Minister Hayes con-cluded. “I have today wrote to all local primary schools en-couraging them to participate in this competition. It would be great to have a local person present to witness this event.”

A new court rul-ing has suggested that there may be a direct link between mobile phone usage and brain tumours. The Ital-ian Supreme court made the ruling this October, after Ital-ian businessman In-nocente Marcolini was diagnosed with a brain tumour after being required to be on his mobile phone for work purposes for up to 6 hours a day. The ruling is expected to cre-ate several similar cases being brought to court, which could leave several leading mobile phone manu-facturers in hot water. The court decided that there was a “casual” link between heavy mo-bile phone usage and brain cancer, and enough to warrant a cause for concern. After win-ning the case, Mar-colini expressed his relief that the issue can now be high-lighted on a global basis and hopes that

more awareness will be created as a re-sult of the ruling. “This is sig-nificant for very many people. I wanted this problem to be-come public because many people still do not know the risks,” “I was on the phone, usually the mobile, for at least five or six hours every day at work. I wanted it recognised that there was a link between my illness and the use of mobile and cord-less phones. Parents need to know their children are at risk of this illness,” he urged. As a result of his tumour, Mar-colini was left with his face paralysed and takes morphine daily for the pain, and although benign, it was life threatening as it spread to his ca-rotid artery, the major vessel which carries blood to the brain. Italian on-cologist Angelo Le-vis has said that the ruling is a big step towards highlight-ing the issue of mo-bile phones and brain cancer to the public.

THIS comes on the back of the Government dra-matically withdrawing a €36m bailout for CIE that it had approved just two months ago with the aim of preventing these major cuts in bus and rail ser-vices. The Transport Minister stated that this bail-out would ensure CIE remained “adequately fund-ed for the immediate future”. But now it seems the semi-state company will have to go ahead with these redundancies and either sell assets or borrow money to keep their services in operation this year. An employee of CIE of nearly 20 years who prefers not to be named told Biz-Blitz that “the government don’t seem to care, even this week Leo Varadkar said that if CIE

don’t improve matters then they can go under and he’s meant to be the minister of transport”. He added about the withdrawal of the 36mil-lion, “To be honest it wouldn’t have made a dif-ference, we spend 50million on diesel alone a year”. The only answer he could give on what the CIE can do to survive was “to go private”. The U-turn also means that further measures might have to be implicated, such as withdrawal of some services as well as pos-sible garage closures and pay freezes. And we have no doubt there will be more fare in-creases on top of the already ludicrous prices. In a press release Fianna Fail Transport Spokesperson, Timmy Dooley TD, has expressed his concern at this withdrawal saying “This whole episode has revealed a lack of planning, and a lack of understanding of the most basic economics. You can’t offer CIE this lifeline and then suddenly take it away without explanation”. He goes on to say that the price hikes have contributed to fall-ing passenger numbers, adding that “the Minister has allowed massive price hikes. When he was in opposition Minister Varadkar hit out at fare increases; this seems to have changed now he is in Government.”

ONE million people across the globe die by suicide each year, that’s one suicide every 40 seconds. The number of suicides in Ireland rose to 525 in 2011, an increase of 7% on the previous year accord-ing to CSO figures. A total of 439 men and 86 women were recorded as having taken their own lives. For every death from suicide, it is estimated there are 10 – 30 times as many attempted suicides or episodes of self-harm. Suicidal behav-iour is a complex phenomenon that usually occurs along a continuum, progressing from suicidal thoughts, to plan-ning, to attempting suicide, and finally dying by suicide. Pieta House, the

centre for the prevention of self harm and suicide opened its doors in January 2006 and has helped over 4,000 people since then. About 9 years ago, Joan Freeman, a practising psychologist, closed down her own counselling business and dedicated her time to finding out how she could help people who were suicidal. After three years of research, she opened up Pieta House in Lucan, Co. Dublin. It quickly became a re-spected and recognised service for those who were suicidal. They have since opened treat-ment centre’s in Ballyfermot, Finglas, Tallaght and Limer-ick. Treatment at Pieta House is free of charge and you do not need a doctors referral and

you do not need to be linked in with a psychiatrist. If you are concerned about someone you know be it a family member, a friend or yourself you can make a referral by ringing (01) 601 0000 or email [email protected] As 80% of Pieta Houses income comes from donations and fund raising events, it is with great pleasure that Superquinn Lucan have announced that they have cho-sen Pieta House as their char-ity of choice for their making a difference locally program. The program was officially opened on the 12th October by Superquinn Lucan manager Ken O’Toole and Volunteer and fund raising co-ordinator with Pieta House Marie Peelo.

Superquinn Lucan will be sell-ing their ultimate chocolate biscuit cakes in store, they are a combination of buttery diges-tive biscuits and golden syrup smothered in a rich coverture milk chocolate finished with honeycomb. The best thing is that these delicious treats are guilt free because Superquinn have pledged to donate 80 cent from the sale of each cake to Pieta House. They have raised 1,900 Euro to date and with your help will raise much more needed funds for Pieta Houses counselling services.

Same-sex marriagesstill a hot topicNEW reports suggest that 66% of Irish voters are in support of the constitu-tion being changed to allow full same-sex marriages. These new fig-ures were taken from the Behaviour and Attitudes poll which was published in the Sunday Times. Younger voters and women were the strongest demographic look-ing for the change, while 57% of those ages above 55 were also in favour of this. The news comes as the Táinaiste Eamon Gil-more has expressed his sup-port for the cause, claiming that Ireland needs to com-plete its transition towards a society which is fully tolerant towards the gay community. Speaking at the an-nual European International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual

and Trans and Intersex As-sociation (ILGA) confer-ence, Gilmore said that he was more than proud of the change in Irish attitudes regarding the gay commu-nity from the last generation to the current generation. “There is a genera-tion of young Irish people, for whom the Ireland of 20 or 30 years ago would be almost unrecognisable. Thousands of young LGBTI persons, who in the past would have felt the need to live else-where, have opted to stay in Ireland. They have enriched the country and made it a more tolerant place,” he said Gilmore also stressed that “the question of same-sex marriage is one that will be considered by our forthcoming Constitu-tional Convention. This is

an innovation in Irish de-mocracy, where citizens and public representatives will come together to con-sider what changes might be made to our Constitution, so that it better reflects not just the society we are now, but the society we aspire to.”Currently, there are eleven countries worldwide (Ar-gentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Neth-erlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Sweden) and several sub-national jurisdictions such as those in Mexico and the US which allow same-sex couples to marry. Several countries, including Ireland, the UK, Australia, France and Germany currently al-low civil ceremonies be-tween same-sex couples.

New driving measures target the young andinexperiencedACCORDING to the Road Safety Au-thority (RSA), a new measure will be introduced to Irish roads which will re-quire all newly qualified drivers to dis-play an ‘N’ plate on their windows once they have passed their driving tests. The proposed measure is part of the new Road Traffic Bill, which is expected to be officially published by the end of 2012. The new law is likely to come into effect next summers, with the ‘N’ plate branding the newly qualified driver as a ‘novice’ for 2 years after passing the initial exam. Drivers who obtain a provisional license will still be re-quired to display an ‘L’ plate on their vehicle. Other laws which are expected to be introduced under the new Road Traffic Bill include the fact that both learners and novic-es could potentially lose their licenses if they

receive more than 6 penalty points. Fully ex-perienced drivers still must receive up to 12 penalty points before their license is revoked. Another measure to hit Irish roads in 2013 for inexperienced drivers is that an acceptable blood alcohol level for these individuals will be significant-ly lower for them compared with that of more experienced drivers. Inexperienced drivers will be allowed a blood-alcohol limit of only 20mg per 100ml of blood. These proposed changes are said to be the latest efforts to reduce the num-ber of deaths or injuries on Irish roads, and the RSA has suggested that the new rules will reward good drivers and will make younger people a lot more vigilant. Speaking on RTÉ’s morning Ireland programme, the Chief Executive

of the RSA, Noel Brett, said: “We’re try-ing to target those most at risk of killing and being killed on our roads, and those are young and inexperienced drivers.“What we’re trying to do is reward good behaviour and kind of a ‘polluter pays’ principle. Those who misbehave are those who feel the pain,” he continued. Brett has praised young Irish driv-ers, but says that more caution needs to be tak-en if Ireland is to continue in decreasing the amount of casualties on the road every year.“Our belief at this point is that the vast major-ity of young people here have a good attitude to road safety. If you behave yourself as a nov-ice then you will have no problem. And our overall goal is to make Ireland one of the saf-est places to drive in Europe,” he concluded.

FIANNA Fáil Environment Spokesperson Barry Cowen has described the Govern-ment’s commitment to establishing a Pyrie Resolution Board as overdue, but welcome. Deputy Cowen commented, “There has been far too much foot-drag-ging on this issue, particularly over the past year, and it will come as a relief now to the thousands families affected that there is finally some resolution in sight. “There are a number of questions still outstanding. For instance, will there be a time limit to this resolution process? There are many homes now which do not yet show visible signs of pyrite damage. Will these homeowners have access to the resolution process in years to come? Will

there be a testing mechanism to establish which developments are affected by pyrite? “For some time now I have been calling on the Minister to go further than the rec-ommendations of the Pyrite Report and to ensure that all of those culpable con-tribute to the cost of repairing the dam-aged homes. I very much welcome the fact that the Minister has now agreed to establish a Resolution Board and has giv-en the stakeholders 10 days to respond. “I intend to hold the Minister to this deadline. The damage, disappointment and financial pressure suffered by innocent homeowners who purchased their homes in good faith only to see them gradually col-lapse in front of their eyes must be con-

fronted by the government. Those thou-sands of ordinary families whose homes are now ruined by pyrite need to know that everything is being done to put this right. “The Minister has my full sup-port in establishing the Resolution Board and implementing all of the recommenda-tions of the Pyrite Report. This is a first and essential step towards justice for these homeowners – but it cannot stop here. We need more detail about the resolution pro-cess. I am also repeating my call for the establishment of a Planning Regulator to ensure that the lack of oversight that we saw for years in Dublin City Council and else-where will not be allowed to happen again.”

THE number of people sign-ing on the Live Register has dropped by 1,000 in October. New figures from the Central Statistics Of-fice show that a total of 434,200 people were on the Live Register last month - the lowest figure this year. Minister for Fi-nance Michael Noonan said that there are some signs now that the domes-

tic economy is beginning to bottom out and that there is some hope for the future. Although the fig-ures also revealed that the number of long-term claim-ants rose by 4.6% to 188,117. The CSO said the number of men who are long-term claimants in-creased by 2% in the year to October, while the increase for women was 11.5%.

PLEBISCITE ON MAYOR WILL GIVE DUBLINERS THEIR SAYFINE Gael TD for Dublin North and for-mer Mayor of Fingal County Council, Alan Farrell, has suggested that citizens in all local authorities should have the op-portunity to decide by plebiscite whether they want their own directly elected Mayor. Deputy Farrell made his comments follow-ing the announcement by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Gov-ernment, Phil Hogan TD, that Dublin will have a plebiscite in 2014. The announce-ment was part of wider changes to local authorities proposed by Minister Hogan. “I am pleased by the proposed changes to our local authorities announced by Minister Hogan. They will help create a more efficient, more accountable and more repre-

sentative local authority system in Ireland. “I firmly believe that all mem-bers of the public, and not just those in Dublin, should have the opportunity to vote on whether they would like their own Mayor. A Mayor that is directly elected and therefore directly accountable to the people will enhance the role and func-tion of each local authority, putting the citizen at the heart of decision making. “The authority of Councillors has been eroded over the decades and in particular by the 2001 Local Government Act. The changes proposed by Minister Ho-gan today will create a more defined man-agement structure at local authority level. “I believe the Dublin Mayoral

plebiscite will provide the opportunity for an important wider debate on how well the councils are managed and accountable to the people. For this reason, I would urge Minister Hogan to consider extending the Mayoral plebiscite to all local authorities. “The reduction in coun-cils from 114 to 31 and the reduction in numbers of Councillors by 42% shows that this Government is determined to make local government more efficient and is not afraid to take decisions that are in the best interest of the electorate. “Moreover, the changes will en-able savings of €420 million which in the current climate is most welcome.”

A key decision, related to the most important single building project in the State, has been made by the Government. The Cabinet has de-cided to develop the New Children’s Hospital at the campus of St James’s Hospital in Dublin. The decision, announced by Min-ister for Health Dr James Reilly, the Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald and Minister of State Alex White, will pave the way for the construction of a hospital that will be of ben-efit to many future generations of Irish children. The decision also ends a period of un-certainty around the project in the wake of the re-jection by An Bord Pleanála of plans to develop the hospital on the site of the Mater Hospital in Dublin. Speaking at the announcement of

the decision at a press conference in Gov-ernment Buildings, Minister Reilly said, “there is no building project to which the Government attaches a greater importance. A nation can be judged on the treatment of its chil-dren. This Government regards the building of the New Children’s Hospital as a key priority and no effort will be spared in expediting its completion”. The decision to choose the St James’s site from among the range of options presented in the Dolphin report ensures that the planned co-lo-cation with an adult hospital and, ultimately, tri-lo-cation with a maternity hospital, will be delivered. In identifying the new site, the Govern-ment has carefully considered the report of the Dolphin Group which was established last March

to consider the issues along with detailed supple-mentary information on cost, time and planning which was subsequently sought from members of the Group with the relevant technical expertise. The decision has been led by clini-cal considerations. It is essential that the new children’s hospital can deliver best clinical out-comes for our children. Co-location with St James’s and, ultimately, tri-location with a ma-ternity hospital on the St James’s campus, will the Government believes provide the excel-lence in clinical care that our children deserve. The Government also considered the very sig-nificant issues of planning, cost, time and ac-cess. Based on the detailed information avail-able from the Dolphin process, it is confident

that the hospital can be and will be built as quickly as possible on the St James’s site. The three existing children’s hospitals have been working closely together over recent years in readiness for the transition to a single hos-pital. In tandem with today’s decision, the Minis-ter has decided that the three hospitals should be-come a single Hospital Group as soon as possible, with a single governance structure, a single budg-et and a single voice for children’s healthcare. The new children’s hospital is now ur-gently required. This Government is de-termined to ensure that it is delivered.

Chinese man sues wife after she gives birth to ‘ugly’ baby

Written by Pieter Mens

Disneyland, but in agalaxy far far away..?!

IT has emerged this week that Disney is pay-ing $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the pro-duction company behind “Star Wars,” from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It’s also making a seventh movie in the “Star Wars” se-ries called “Episode 7,” set for release in 2015, with plans to follow it with Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years. The Walt Disney Co. announced the blockbuster agreement to make the purchase in cash and stock. The deal includes Lucasfilm’s prized high-tech production companies, Indus-trial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, as well as rights to the “Indiana Jones” franchise. Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the pur-chase is a great fit and will help preserve and grow the “Star Wars” franchise. “This transaction com-bines a world-class portfolio of content includ-ing Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertain-ment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple plat-forms, businesses and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.” In a statement George Lucas said “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next.

It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. “I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experi-ence give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.” Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become the di-vision’s president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas will be creative consultant on new “Star Wars” films. The deal comes on the heels of Dis-ney’s 2009 acquisition of Marvel Entertain-ment for $4 billion and its 2006 purchase of Pixar Animation Studios for $7 billion, two po-tent entertainment brands that appeal to families. We are not sure how happy Star Wars fans will be about this news, but we feel that Dis-ney could do no worse than Lucas did on Epi-sodes I II and III of the franchise. Only time will tell how strong the force is in Disney.

A CHINESE man Jian Feng has filed a lawsuit against his wife after she gave birth to the couple’s daughter. After his wife gave birth to the “incredibly ugly” baby, he started making accusations about her having an affair, because he couldn’t be-lieve that his “beautiful” wife could give birth to such an ugly baby. "I married my wife out of love, but as soon as we had our first daugh-ter, we began having marital issues. Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me." DNA tests proved the child was his.It emerged that Mrs Feng had

undergone €77,000 worth of plastic surgery in South Ko-rea, before the couple married. The Northern Chinese man, according to a report from PlanetIvy.com, divorced his wife and sued her, apparently, for be-ing ugly — and won. He was awarded $120,000 from his wife. The judge in the case stated that she had tricked him into marrying her under “false pretences”, as Mr Feng did not know about the plas-tic surgery, and was only told about it after he accused her of the affair.

A new workout craze is set to hit Ireland in 2013, which could push similar high-inten-sity workout classes straight off the map. “Relentless” is a power work-out, which includes up to 75 minutes of high-intensity cardio and strength activi-ties including squats, push-ups and sit-ups. Billed as the new “super work-out”, it was founded in New York City by former competitive boxer Sam Lopez, and has already taken America by storm, offer-ing no gimmicks other than pure fitness. Lopez, who is now 44, created the workout programme in an attempt to stay in optimum shape as he was getting older. “Agility, balance, coordination and endurance all go down as you age, and I wanted to design something which would help athletes like me compensate for the decline in reflex response time,” he said. The craze is already starting to take off in the UK. Frame, one of the UK’s

biggest workout chains has said that it has witnessed a major surge in the amount of clients it has attracted in the past 3 years, and that the majority of frequent gym us-ers today are looking for high intensity workouts which promise to deliver ma-jor calorie burn and adrenaline rushes. For instance, Frame has reported that its “Power Hour” class is one of its big-gest sellers with participants promised to burn off more than 800 calories in 60 minutes. An even more strenuous workout, the Sweat 1000, could also be threatening to burst onto Irish shores. In short, this work-out guarantees that you can burn up to 1000 calories an hour by alternating short but intense treadmill intervals with total body workouts. Originally a specialized weight endurance training for athletes, it’s aimed at those who are looking for boot camp or personal trainer results in half the time.

25 year old Scott Stephens was left with eight deep lac-erations after been attacked by the shark at Eureka, California The surfer was paddling on his board 150 yards further out than other surfers when the shark grabbed him and pulled him under water. “The shark came from underneath me, grabbed onto my side, shook me a few times and pulled me under water,” he told re-porters from his hospital bed. “I

opened my eyes under water and punched the shark on the side of the head a couple of times until it released me. I saw a lot of blood.” Luckily he was able to get back on his board and re-turn to shore before the shark which he believes was a 4ft juve-nile great white could strike again Fellow surfers came to his aid when they heard him screaming for help and took him to St Joseph Hospital. There doctors said that the

surfboard probably took some of the brunt of the bite, possibly keeping the shark’s teeth from penetrating organs that would have made sur-gery riskier and more complicated. Despite the traumatic experience, Mr Stephens said it will not keep him out of the wa-ter. “I will be very scared, I’m sure,” he said. “I’ll definitely have some mental barriers to get through. I think it’ll be worth it.”

Sinn Féin welcomes Homeless World Cup team to Leinster HouseSINN Féin spokesperson on Arts, Sports and Tourism Sandra McLellan TD welcomed the Irish Homeless World Cup team to Lein-ster House. The team finished 16 of 48 teams at the World Cup in Mexico this month. At a reception in the private din-ing room in Leinster House Deputy McLellan welcomed the team and made a presentation to goalkeeper David Byrne who was voted Goal-keeper of the tournament in Mexico this month. Speaking at the recep-tion this evening Deputy McLellan said:“On behalf of Sinn Fein, our Housing

spokesperson Deputy Dessie Ellis and my-self it’s a great pleasure to welcome Ire-land’ Homeless World Cup Soccer team, their mentors and friends to Leinster House. “Today is about honouring the play-ers who represented Ireland in the World Cup in Mexico namely; David Byrne, Ollie Carroll, Ian Gannon, Paul Fitzsimons, Michael Nevin, Keith Hogan, Wayne Reid, and Garreth Lynch. “During the tournament the Irish team played teams from Brazil, Ukraine, Poland, Argen-tina, Portugal, Norway, South Africa, and Scotland.“The Big Issue league now has tourna-

ments in towns and cities across the country. In total over 500 young people compete in street leagues. The leagues culminate with an All-Ireland final that brings teams from North and South to participate in a one day event.

Out of this tournament the current group of players were selected to represent Ireland. “Particular congratulations must go to David By-rne in recognition of his personal achievement in being voted goalkeeper of the tournament.”

AN Taoiseach Enda Kenny has announced a €2million IPB Gathering Ireland Fund at Government Buildings. The fund, a 50:50 partnership between IPB Insurance and The Gathering Ireland 2013 is in re-sponse to the rapidly growing number of gatherings being planned across the coun-try for 2013. The fund will be adminis-tered by local authorities across the State to support events and gatherings that have the capacity to attract overseas visitors. Speaking at the launch the Taoi-seach said “The core objective of The Gathering Ireland 2013 is to deliver an ad-ditional 325,000 tourists to Ireland in 2013 and this generous fund by IPB Insurance and the further provision of funds by the Government is a reflection of the impor-tance of The Gathering as a key Govern-ment project that will directly contribute to the economic revival of our country.” IPB Insurance has allocated €1 million of the fund to support local flagship events and activities in every city and county. The fund will be distributed across city and

county councils and will range from €25,000 and €60,000 to support up to three flagship events in each council area subject to approv-al based on application criteria. In parallel, The Gathering Ireland 2013 has allocated a further €1 million to the fund to target other local and community events in each county. Grant amounts from €500- €2,500 will be made available to these events following ap-proval through a short application process. Ronan Foley, CEO of IPB Insur-ance said: “As a 100% Irish owned mutual insurer whose remit it is to protect the inter-ests of our local authority members and their communities we are absolutely convinced by the economic rationale and business op-portunity afforded by the Gathering Ireland 2013 initiative. The Gathering Ireland 2013 will I believe, bring new momentum to the development of the global Irish network and deliver not only short term benefits next year but longer term rewards as relation-ships develop. Corporate Ireland must step forward and assume a leadership position and must do more for our country and our

communities by contributing to the future of Irish society in which we all have a stake.” The target for the combined fund will be to support 700 or more individu-al Gathering Ireland events. Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varad-kar said: “There has been huge interest in organising Gatherings around the country. To date, between 6,000 and 7,000 people have attended more than 50 meetings in every single county, at which all sorts of Gathering ideas were proposed. Thanks to IPB, for the first time funding will now be available for certain local and community Gatherings. Even if you don’t qualify for funding, I would still urge everyone to get involved, and get organising. Everyone can still organise a Gathering of their own, even if it’s something as simple as inviting one or more people to visit Ireland next year.” The Gathering Ireland 2013 is Ire-land’s biggest ever tourism initiative, provid-ing an opportunity for those with ancestral links or an affinity to Ireland to play a part in and benefit from our economic recovery.

FIANNA Fáil Seanad Spokes-person on Education & Skills Senator Averil Power has de-manded action from the Edu-cation Minister following confirmation that more than 10,300 students from Dublin are still waiting for their stu-dent grants to be processed. The figures were re-vealed by Education Minister Ruairí Quinn in a series of Par-liamentary Questions from Fi-anna Fáil. It was confirmed that just 21% of the 13,114 student grant applicants from Dublin have received a reply from the Department. That means that almost 8 out of every 10 students from Dublin who applied for a grant are still waiting for it to be processed. Nationally, over 50,000 applications still haven’t been decided on.Senator Power has described the situation as unacceptable and has called for an urgent ex-

planation from Minister Quinn.“It is clear that the new central-ised grant application system (SUSI) is riddled with prob-lems. Minister Quinn launched this system amid great fanfare in June saying the process will be ‘quick and easy’ and it will stop students waiting for ‘lengthy pe-riods of time and facing undue hardship as a result of delays’. However the reality for students is far from what was prom-ised,” the Dublin Senator said. “As we head into the Christmas period there are tens of thousands of students in Dub-lin and across the country who are still waiting for their grants to be processed by this ‘quick and easy’ system. For many of them, the delays are pre-venting them from registering fully at college and accessing library and computer services. Some have been asked to pay the €2,250 third level regis-tration fee up front until their

grants come through. Others who are in receipt of the Back to Education allowance have been issued letters saying they will be cut off by November 6th unless they can show proof of college registration, which they are prevented from doing until they receive their grant. “The delays are hitting the most hard-pressed students in Dublin. These are students who because of their personal situation need state support to go to college. It is disgraceful that it is now November and so many of them still have no idea if and when they will receive their grant. Minister Quinn was quick to accept praise when this new system launched. But now that the grant application sys-tem is in crisis, he is nowhere to be seen. Students deserve an explanation from the Min-ister and some assurance about what is being done to rectify the situation,” said Senator Power.

Time to Introducemandatory ‘Traffic Light’ labellingfor foodFINE Gael Senator for Dublin South East, Catherine Noone, has called for Ireland to leg-islate for mandatory ‘traffic light’ packaging on food sold here. Under the traffic light packaging guidelines green represents healthy, red signi-fies unhealthy and orange and yellow are in between the two. “There is no ques-tion that, as the Food Advisory Committee in the UK reported, people are being misled by rela-tively meaningless descriptions on food labels. ‘Traditional’, ‘original’ and even ‘diet’ are generic terms that can be con-jured at the whim of a market-

ing department’s imagination.“The traffic light initiative pro-vides concise, clear informa-tion for the consumer. It makes sense for a number of reasons: firstly, people are familiar with it as many supermarket own-brands already use it, secondly the UK will be introducing such mandatory packaging in 2013, so it gives our food exporters an advantage as Irish products can be easily shifted to the UK and thirdly it will benefit consumers as they can make healthier choices at a glance. “Lidl are also due to roll out this packaging in its Irish outlets in 2014, bringing

to six the number of super-markets that currently engage in some form of traffic light labelling of their own accord – it’s common sense for the retailers: it means they can pro-duce and export very similar packaging in Ireland and the UK, while also allowing their customers to choose healthy items in a more convenient way. “We are in a long-term battle to ensure that our nation is eating more health-ily, and I believe this is a simple, effective method of changing habits for the better.”

DVD & BLU RAYSnow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Snow White and the Huntsman is based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale “Snow White” and stars Kristen Stewart (Snow White), Chris Hemsworth (The Huntsman) and Charlize Theron (The Evil Queen, Raveena). When the Evil Queen, Raveena dis-covers that her beautiful and kind stepdaughter Snow White is now the fairest of the land, and will soon become ruler of the kingdom, she sends the troubled Huntsman to kill Snow White. But he becomes Snow White’s protector, and what follows is a good old fashioned tale of good versus evil. As Snow White fights to return the kingdom to its former glory, as Raveena has destroyed the once beautiful kingdom, and created a dark and evil kingdom in its place.

Snow White also enlists the help of the dwarves (who she meets along her travels with the Huntsman). The dwarves add a warmth and charm to the film, and Bob Hoskins is excellent as Muir, the blind elder Dwarf. And there’s even an Irish dwarf played by Brian Gleeson thrown in for good measure! The visuals in the Fairy Sanctuary are captivating, creating a magical place that you will gaze at in awe of its beauty. The special effects used on the dwarves are also exceptionally good. Charlize Theron is excellent as the Evil Queen Raveena, and Kristen Stewart conveys the vulnerability of the Snow White character perfectly.

Snow White and the Huntsman is an epic fantasy action adventure film, which is bound to keep you entertained during these cold Winter nights. It is a very enjoyable film, and is an extremely well made blockbuster.

FOOTBALL is no stranger to racism, and even in the 21st century, players, officials and fans globally are still sub-jected to abuse regarding their nation-ality, skin colour religion or ethnicity. Campaigns and networks such as ‘Kick It Out and ‘Football Against Racism in Europe’ established in 1993 and in 1999 respectively have been backed by many high profile fig-ures in the sport such as Sir Alex Fer-guson, and whilst these measures have progressed the issue, events which have conspired over the past few weeks have propelled the issue of racism in football into a major talking point once again. After the Football Asso-ciation’s (FA) decision to hand John Terry a mere four-match suspension following his racial abuse over Anton Ferdinand, several high profile black footballers were outraged by the lenient punishment. Several of these players,

including Anton’s brother Rio Ferdi-nand decided against wearing a ‘Kick It Out’ t-shirt in support of the campaign against racism as a show of frustration against the progress of the campaign.During Manchester United’s 4-2 vic-tory over Stoke City on the 20th of October, in which Rio Ferdinand had refused to wear the ‘Kick it Out’ t-shirt, United’s manager Ferguson described Ferdinand’s decision as “embarrassing for me” and com-menting that “he’ll be dealt with”.The Professional Footballers Associa-tion (PFA) was quick to defend the de-cision of Ferdinand and other player’s decisions to not wear the t-shirt, cit-ing the right of freedom of expression. Clarke Carlisle of PFA has said: “Sir Alex Ferguson is con-tinual in his unwavering support for the Kick It Out campaign which is commendable and what we all want

to see, but you can’t vilify or coerce any individual for making a stand,”“Everyone has a right to free speech – just like you can’t coerce anyone into shak-ing hands, you can’t make somebody wear a T-shirt – although I do personal-ly believe that joining in with the cam-paign is the best way forward,” he said. T-shirts have become some-what symbolic in the Premier League of late. Last season, Liverpool showed their support for Luis Suárez after he received an eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrick Evra by wearing t-shirt which depicted the striker’s face on them. At the end of October, Chel-sea filed a formal complaint to the FA in regards to referee Mark Clat-tenburg, who they accuse of racially abusing two of their players using in-appropriate language during their 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United.

Kerry Group has announced the establishment of an industry-leading global technology and innovation centre in Ireland. The €100m investment, which will create 800 jobs, as well as 400 immediate construction jobs, will be part-funded by the Depart-ment of Jobs, Enterprise and Inno-vation through Enterprise Ireland. The new flagship global technology and customer innovation centre will serve as a key focal point for Kerry’s customer engagement activities pro-viding strategic customers with ac-cess to the Group’s complete breadth and depth of technologies, scientific research, innovation and applica-tions expertise across food, bever-age and pharmaceutical markets. Welcoming the an-nouncement, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innova-tion Mr Richard Bruton TD said: “As I have said before, central to the Government’s plans for jobs and growth is creating a powerful en-gine of indigenous enterprise. We must not only continue to deepen and develop the impact of the very important multinational sector, but also crucially support Irish com-panies who are seeking to expand their presence in export markets and become world-leaders in their field. I commend Enterprise Ireland on their excellent work on this project.

Minister for Ag-riculture, Food and the Ma-rine, Simon Coveney TD said: “Today is a phenomenal announce-ment and is perhaps the most signifi-cant investment ever in the Irish Agri Food industry. Not only is this an an-nouncement of 800 high end jobs, but it is the proof that the agri food sector can be central to rebuilding the Irish economy. Kerry Group are Ireland’s largest Agri food and food innovation company. They employ 24,000 peo-ple around the world. This investment is a statement of confidence in the Irish economy and in the quality of Irish food science graduates to deliver food innovation in the most modern facility of its type on the planet. The agri food and food innovation sec-tor will continue to provide positiv-ity and optimism in the Irish econo-my. The leadership that Kerry have shown with this project is testament to their commitment to this country” CEO of Enterprise Ireland Frank Ryan added: “Food is Ireland’s number one export sector and critically important to our economy and to export-led growth. This centre will be one of the world’s most advanced food innovation fa-cilities. It will underpin Ireland’s world-wide reputation in food in-novation and secure our standing as a world leader in the food industry.

THE Central Bank of Ireland has is-sued an update on its on-going inves-tigation into the sale of PPI policies. At the request of the Central Bank the following firms (Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Banks, EBS, GE Money, Ulster Bank and Permanenttsb) have commenced reviews of their PPI sales since August 2007. During September the Central Bank extended its inves-tigation to look at PPI sales by other banks and credit institutions. Enforce-ment actions are also being considered.

At this point we are naming the firms which, at our request, have begun their reviews and who will be communicat-ing with their customers over the com-ing weeks to outline the approach they will be taking and the expected time-lines for completion of their reviews.

We will update consumers as develop-ments arise in relation to other firms.

The Central Bank is aware that a signif-icant number of PPI related complaints and enquiries are being referred to firms by claims management companies on behalf of consumers. It is important for consumers to know that such com-panies charge fees and that the costs to the consumer can be significant.

Complaints regarding the sale of PPI since August 2007 will be investigated by the firms listed as part of their reviews. All other PPI complaints must be dealt with in compliance with the 2012 Con-sumer Protection Code, including those relating to sales prior to August 2007.

Central bank requests firms to review PPI sales and the contact all their customers

Road Rage on theIncrease on Ireland’s Roads

NEARLY 40 per cent of Irish drivers admit to shouting or getting angry behind the wheel on a weekly basis – with a very angry 11.5 per cent admitting to daily bouts of road rage. These worrying statistics are the findings of a recent study carried out among Irish drivers, which also revealed around 13 per cent of motorists have got out of their car to confront another driver. The Continental Tyres report also found that near-ly one in three road users ‘expect’ to experience ag-gressive or intimidating driving whilst out in the car. Paddy Murphy of Continental Tyres Ireland said: “The road rage figures revealed in our survey are shocking. Of paramount im-portance is road safety but if motorists feel intimidated or an-gry they will lack concentration, increasing the danger for other road users, never mind not enjoying the driving experience.”

“We are urging drivers to consider using more courtesy while driving, not only to improve safety and the driving experi-ence but also because showing consideration to others on the roads actually eases congestion and reduces delays.”It also emerged that when on the receiving end of road rage 40 per cent feel angry, 21 per cent feel shaken and nearly one in five (18.9 per cent) feel like retaliating. Dr Mark Sullman, expert in driver behaviour at Cranfield Uni-versity said: “When driving, we are prevented from using the normal cues to work out people’s intentions, such as facial expression and body language, so we are more likely to mis-understand their behaviour and interpret it in a negative way. “For instance if you bump into someone on foot, a quick smile or ‘oops’ is all that is needed to show it was ac-cidental. However, when in the car, with the absence of these cues, people are much more likely to react in an aggressive manner than in other ‘public’ situations.”

Dr Sullman advises: “You can choose not to let it rile you and instead deal with the situation in a posi-tive way, such as concentrating on driving safely your-self or realising that everyone makes mistakes.”Paddy Murphy added: “Avoiding the stop-start of harsh braking and acceleration associated with aggressive driv-ing saves energy and improves the flow of traffic, reducing journey times which in turn should make motorists happier.”Getting a blast of the horn from another driv-er is the most common form of aggression, fol-lowed by offensive hand gestures and being ‘tailgated’.As to the road users who annoy drivers the most, learn-ers topped the list (52.7 per cent), followed by older or slower drivers (45.5 percent) and boy racers (43.6 per cent).Contact: 085 155 4992

Medal of Honor Warfighter: The Most Authentic Military Shooter This Year Step into the boots of the most elite Tier 1 Operators to hunt down terror. The award-winning Medal of Honor franchise has sold over 50M copies in its illustrious history, with Medal of Honor Warfighter set to deliver this year’s only true modern military shooter experience. Introducing 12 Tier 1 units from 10 different na-tions including the Polish GROM, German KSK, Canadian JTF-2 and U.S. Navy SEAL, Medal of Honor Warfighter will deliver one of the pre-mier multiplayer experiences of the year. Pow-ered by the advanced technology of the Frost-bite™ 2 game engine, IGN.com says the game “looks and feels far better than its predecessor.” The Medal of Honor Warfighter in-novative multiplayer design allows players to represent their nation as gamers go head-to-head pitting the best-of-the-best soldiers from around the world in online competition. The game also introduces a new multiplayer co-operative feature called Fireteams, which gives players a com-petitive advantage and rewards them for team-

ing up with a friend on the battlefield. Players will be able to represent their global warfight-ers and experience Fireteams in eight real-world maps including Sarajevo Stadium in Bosnia and five unique modes like the nerve-rattling “Hot-spot” and fast-paced “Home Run” Sport mode. Written by actual U.S. Tier 1 Opera-tors while deployed overseas, Medal of Honor Warfighter features a dotted line to real world events and provides players a view into glob-ally recognised threats and situations letting them experience the action as it might have un-folded. From rescuing hostages in Abu Sayyaf’s stronghold in Basilan, Philippines to assault-ing Al-Shabaab’s “Pirate Town” on the So-mali Coast, the single player campaign allows players to step behind the iron sights of Tier 1 Operators as they hunt down a terrorist mas-termind and the global threat of the distribution of a deadly explosive chemical called PETN. Medal of Honor Warfighter is available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertain-ment system, PlayStation®3 computer enter-tainment system and the PC.

MAKE trouble for the cops, for your friends or just for fun! Need for Speed Most Wanted, is now available at retail stores. After shattering franchise re-cords with a total of 43 award nominations and winning the prestigious Best Racing Game award at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), from the E3 Game Critics, Need for Speed Most Wanted is poised for global success. In Spain, Official PlayStation Magazine awarded Most Wanted with a 9.4/10 and called it, “the best online multiplayer experience ever.” Game Informer, in North America, gave Most Wanted a 9/10 and described the action as an “exhilarating experi-ence.” Edge Magazine, in the UK, also awarded Most Wanted a 9/10 and credited the game for setting a “new standard in open world driving games.” Need for Speed Most Wanted puts social competition at the heart of the experience, and lets players compete to be-come the Most Wanted amongst people they care about the most - their friends. Need for Speed Most Wanted is powered by Autolog 2, an innovative online technology that automatically tracks and compares every-thing players do in the game against their friends, from earn-ing Speed Points to achieving

best race times and more. Need for Speed Most Wanted has been declared, “the ultimate social game” by IGN, engag-ing friends unlike ever before, and allowing players to leave their mark in the open world across their social network. Winning never felt so good. “With our years of experience creating critically acclaimed blockbuster hits, Need for Speed Most Wanted is Criterion’s vision to shake up the series and breathe new life into the genre,” said Matt Webster, Executive Produc-er, Criterion Games. “We’re throwing years of convention out the window and creating an open world game with an open structure that lets players drive whatever car they want, how they want, without consequenc-es. We’ve built an experience full of variety that enables free-dom and choice for the player to play the game the way they choose. Take down friends in a race to the finish, explore the city to find new cars, flash past speed cameras, jump through billboards or take on an Au-tolog Recommendation. Not only do players have complete freedom, they’re rewarded for everything they do. With friends so naturally embedded into the heart of the experience, Need for Speed Most Wanted

is the most socially-connect-ed game of this generation.” Developed by award-winning studio, Crite-rion Games, Need for Speed Most Wanted features a seam-less, nonstop multiplayer ex-perience, with no menus and no lobbies - just competition. Gamers are thrust into a con-tinuous playlist of different events with persistent scoring and endless rewards. Players must fight for position on the start line, or turn around to take out oncoming rivals at the finish. Furthermore, with the all-new CloudCompete tech-nology, players can extend the game beyond the console with a cloud-based scoring system that tracks Speed Points and game accomplishments across multiple platforms through http://www.needforspeed.com. For the first time, players can rack up points on the couch while playing multiplayer on the console and then top off their Speed Points while on the go on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android or PlayStation® Vita.

Now available for the Xbox 360® videogame and entertain-ment system with Kinect sup-port, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, PC, PlayStation Vita, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Android..

The Killers fourth studio album takes its name, from a phase on the state flag of Nevada, where the band are from. It fits the album perfectly as this album stands for everything that the killers are, which is heav-ily styled synth /rock sounds under Brandon Flowers booming voice.

The album itself flows, like a band that is running on dry, bar the sin-gle “Runaway” there is no real

hits and the band seems to have no direction where to go next. The only highlights are “Runa-way” which lyrically could have been written by Bruce Springsteen.

“A matter of time” which sounds like it could have been a Meat-loaf song in the late 80s early 90s (not that that’s a bad thing) though it will make a great live song and the last track “Battle born”.

The Killers: Battle Born

Before pressing play on this album, you know Mumford & Sons are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. In the sense that if the album sounds dif-ferent from “Sigh No More” they run the risk of losing the fans they have and if they don’t change, people may say they only have one kind of sound.

I am one listener who is glad they did not change too much. Keeping their new folk/pop sound, while injecting a country sound and tempo into songs like “I will wait “ you get a feeling

of where the band is going. Then you have the striped back sound that runs through most of ‘Lover’s Eyes’ a song that would make Damien Rice proud. The Highlights of the album have to be “Broken Crown” which is the soundtrack to the best scene in a western movie, that is yet to be written and the song “Below my feet” which can only be described as beautiful. This album may not have songs that you will hear at your local nightclub, but I do warn you get ready to sing your heart out to it, at house parties for the next year or so.

Mumford & Sons: Babel

Irish Singer/Songwriter Cathal Fla-herty has been going from strength to strength over the last few years. He has played support to artists such as Bressie, Jamie Lawson, The Walls, Jack L, Bonnie Tyler, Brian Kennedy and Francis Black. It seems now is his time to shine with his debut EP ‘Lost & Found’. Cathal Flaherty voice sounds like across between Jack L and

Declan O’ Rourke. His writ-ing style is one from the heart, straight and to the point, there is no double meaning in his songs.

A stand out track is “where to hide “which has a great anthemic chorus that will have you sing-ing alone before the end of your first play and will stick in your head for the next few hours.
