Welcome to our second issue!

editor’s note

This issue was really fun to do. We, once again, had the priviledge of meeting and working with aweseom vendors. We focused a lot on color in this issue. There’s on better way to start the summer then with bright colors! We had the honor of covering a wonderful event in Philadelphia called, “Let Them Eat Cake”. This event is put together to help raise money for an organization called, City of Hope. You can find a huge article featuring all the cakes and telling you a little bit more about the event itself as well as City of Hope. Our venue that we featured is great, because the entire rental fee goes to Cancer Support Community Philadelphia. Make sure to check out the article on them for more details.

This issue is full of color and ways to plan your wedding to help support charitable organizations. Enjoy!

Hearts Always,

Jason and Heather

Back to Nature and comfort“Earth tones, whites, and a basic dress are great for a laid back summer day. You can look stylish and be comfy. Don’t forget to add touches of color”

Q- Is it rude to ask people for cash instead of presents?

A- Yes, it is considered rude. However, if they ask which you would prefer, cash or physical present, than it’s ok to let them know.

Q- My budget is really small and I barely have any extra for flowers, but I’d really like some at my wedding. What should I do?

A-Try to pick flowers that are in season and keep the arrangements simple. If you really can’t afford to get all your flowers through a florist, consider doing your own centerpieces. Have a florist do your corsages, bouquets, and boutonnieres. Remeber, just keep it simple, compare wholesale flower websites, and enlist the help of your bridesmaids.

date night uring the planning stage of your wedding, it’s easy to forget about the main reason why your getting married… your future spouse! And then once your married, it can be easy to let the fire start to wane and for romance to fall by the wayside. For many couples the solution can be picking a night to have a “date night.” This too can get stagnant however. How many times can a person go to a movie and grab a bite at the local chain restaurant? That’s why we recommend “spicing it up” with a few ideas that are maybe a little bit more unique.

Local fairs are a fun

place to hang out. Most towns have some kind of

local fair or festi-val in the summer time

that is accompanied by rides, food, ven-

dors, and some-times even fire-

works.

Local Sporting Event

For those couples on a budget, you don’t

have to go to a major league level sports

team. There are plenty of minor league

teams, with very nice stadiums whose ticket

prices can be a little more budget friendly.

Even if neither person has a vested interest in the local sport teams, a great place for a date can be

grabbing a pair of tickets to a sporting event in your area. Baseball games tend to be the best because they are tamer than the other sports, and the fans

tend to be a little less rowdy, but just about any event can be fun. You can grab a bite, a drink, and

just sit back and enjoy the game.

style & beauty - grooms tie and bow ties

Or instead of a tie, try going back to the old fashion bow tie. They come in a variety of colors or you can go with the traditional black. Either way it is a change from the ordinary.

One way to add a splash of color to you wedding day is to venture away

from the traditional and go for a brightly color tie. Feel free to use patterns and stripes to dress up

the grooms suit.

re you a bride that is looking for less expesive items to use on your wedding day? Is there a way to get used or left over items cheap? Or maybe you’re a newlywed who doesn’t know what to do with all of the left over items from your big day. What do you do with all that stuff? You could try eBay, but that website is so generalized that your few wedding items could get lost in the shuffle. And if you are a buyer, it can be really hard to search through the 100,000 search results to find the item you were really looking to pur-chase. So what can you do? That’s when you go to BravoBride.com!

AFounded in October of 2008 by Susan Shapiro, BravoBride is a great wed-ding resource. It is a global market place where brides can buy and sell wedding items of all shapes and sizes. What makes it different then other online auction sites? According to Susan, “BravoBride is the largest on-line marketplace for everything wed-ding. Almost all items are free to list and we never charge a commission upon sale. This sets us apart from oth-er classified and auction sites.” And anyone can use it! “We have brides, grooms, newlyweds, mothers of the bride, bridesmaids and just about anyone else you can imagine using BravoBride. Brides can list almost all wedding items for free, there is a small listing fee for wedding dresses and wedding rings. We also have a section called BravoBride boutiques for retailers and wedding vendors to list their products.”

“The overall goal is to help brides have more

practical weddings and relieve some of the financial stress that a

wedding can cause.”

Women campaign.

features

Page 25: Issue 2 - Summer 2011

Now down to the details. How much can a person expect to spend when listing items? Well according to Susan, “Almost all items are free to list. There is a one-time $19.95 fee for wedding dresses and wedding rings. We never charge a commission upon sale and all items remain on BravoBride until sold. Retailers pay a low monthly fee to advertise their products on BravoBride.” And there is no limit to the number of items that can be listed. The only rule is that you can only list 8 items per day. They also offer the option of upgraded listings at a minimal fee. But a portion of the proceeds from that is donated to the American Heart Association Go Red for Women campaign.

What can we find at BravoBride?

“From used wedding dresses to jewelry, accesso-ries, shoes, veils, ceremony and reception items to

decorations and more. We’ve even had wedding attire for dogs listed for sale on BravoBride.”

So how did it all begin? Well Susan actually got the idea when she was planning her own wedding. “When I was planning my own wedding I quickly realized how ex-pensive weddings were. I became tired of overpaying for brand new wedding items I’d use only once and for just a few hours. I looked online for used wedding items but couldn’t find a website that was specifically focused on wedding items. I decided to create a website were brides could find what they needed without spending a fortune and get some money back on their wedding. And so BravoBride was born.”

So make sure you go online and check out BravoBride and get some great wedding deals!

a honeymoon wishlist

ne of the most fun things a couple gets to do together before their wedding is the filling out of their gift registry. It gives the couple a chance to have fun together and pick out all the things that they need for their new lives together. But many couples have a lot of the items they already need for their future lives. Whether it is because they lived together before the marriage, which is a growing trend, or they lived separately, many couples are presented with the prob-lem of already having most of what they need. In some cases they have more then what they need. And how many couples really need two toasters? Most couples don’t want to ask for cash, because it can be a little awkward and it’s bad etiquette. So what can you do?

If you are finding yourself in this predicament, or are just not interested in unwrap-ping bath towels; there is an alternative to the traditional gift registry. It’s called a honeymoon registry. This is where couples are able to go online and select things that they would like to get for their honeymoon. It could be a massage, a romantic dinner, or anything else that you might desire on your honeymoon.

Page 29: Issue 2 - Summer 2011

One place that couples can make one of these registries is a site called honeymoonwishes.com. It allows the bride and groom to customize a registry that specifically fits their needs. They can ask for airfare, a room upgrade, and more. But that’s not all. This site also allows for a special bride and groom website showcas-ing their story or any other information they wish to share. They can also put up a photo album full of great couple shots and more. It’s a great site for the couple that has everything they need. So, if you’re a couple that is looking for great honeymoon adventures go create a honeymoon gift registry!

Many people have started taking part in the new emerging trend of “group” buying power. There are sites sprouting up all over the internet that allow you to select your local area and received great discounts on restaurants, movies, and more all through the power of group buying. And now that trend has reached the bridal community. BustMyBudget.com, launched in 2010, is a group buying site that helps brides and grooms get great prices on some outstanding vendors. This is a great way for couples to work with amazing vendors all over the country without having to worry about the big price tag that usually comes with a great wedding day. So how does it work? Well, visit the site daily for new and exciting deals. Tell your friends about and if enough people buy the deal, the deal is on! A voucher is put into your account and you’re ready to go. So head on over to bustmybudget.com and check out all the great deals that are available in your local area. New areas are being added all the time so if your area is not on there yet, be sure to keep checking back. Hopefully it will be up soon.

Tips for a Destination Weddingby; Alisha Fuller of Hummingbird Hall Jamaica

Page 32: Issue 2 - Summer 2011

fair priced wedding in a gorgeous destination has become an increasingly attractive option for couples wishing to restrict their guest-list, control their budget and begin their happily ever after in paradise. As a social anthropologist turned wedding designer, noth-ing excites me more than destination weddings. There is something magical about couples choosing to incorporate another culture and area of the globe into their love story!

Making full use of the host country or city is therefore a must!

For instance, rather than traditional welcome parties at a resort, Hummingbird Hall couples have welcomed their guests to the island by hosting volunteer-work “parties” at a local children’s home, stingray sanctuary or butterfly sanctuary. Wonderfully, not only do these parties make a lasting and positive contribution to the host-country; guests are given a once-in-a-lifetime, feel good experience too.

Other details that guests tend to appreciate are locally made wedding favours. Think handmade soups, locally grown coffee, honey and candles made by local bees, or miniature bottles of the local alcoholic delights. Not only do these favours root the guest experience in the locale; but by purchasing in-country, couples again support the local economy and spread the feel good factor!

Indeed, with use of technology, the wedding feel good factor can even spread beyond the country’s shores. For, at innovative resorts and venues at least, couples have the opportunity to beam their wedding live and in real time to password protected websites. This is an ideal way of ensuring that those unable to travel can witness and participate in the festivities and celebrations.

Destination weddings are also a wonderful opportunity for couples to introduce their guests to a place they might not have visited.

A

Page 33: Issue 2 - Summer 2011

Destination weddings really can be what dreams are made of.

Page 34: Issue 2 - Summer 2011

Yet for most couples the real difficulty revolves around deciding on the actual location of the wedding. This decision is made all the more difficult because few couples have the opportunity to see their wedding venue in person until shortly before their wedding.

Due diligence is therefore a must; and couples who opt for destination weddings are well advised to ask their venue or planner questions that are listed on the next page.

Armed with questions, there is no need for couples to hold a wedding at a large chain hotel simply because their advertising budget enables them to advertise on prime-time television! In fact, boutique and smaller venues are often more reasonably priced, offer a more exclusive experience and are more delightfully situated than their larger competitors.

ne detail that sometimes gets overlooked is the final exit of the newlyweds. There are a lot of options for this, but sometimes nothing is more fun than the traditional getaway car. All you need is a car, some decorations and you’re ready to go.

In the past, people would write on the windows with a bar of soap, or shaving cream, and tie cans to the bumper to drag along the road. The problem with this is that shaving cream can damage the paint, and cans could create sparks which can be dangerous. A better option for the decorations are kits available to decorate your car that come with a variety things, from magnets, to window clings, to streamers, and more. We found a great kit at A.C. Moore that does the trick. Just make sure that safety comes first when decorating the car.

Don’t put too much on the windows, or do anything that will obstruct the drivers view. To add an interesting twist to the getaway car, try finding an uncommon car or a classic car. For our getaway car we used a 1965 Plymouth Fury. Enjoy your GETAWAY!

Ridgeland Mansionvenue spotlight

itting on a large plot of land overlooking the Schuylkill River in beautiful Fairmont Park, one can find a hidden gem, known as Ridgeland Mansion. Open for weddings since 1999, Ridgeland Mansion is a beautiful outdoor wedding venue, with a fully operational kitchen, as well as indoor facilities for smaller events.

S

Page 56: Issue 2 - Summer 2011
Page 57: Issue 2 - Summer 2011

With no restricted or recommended vendor list, and a large space that offers a lot of flex-ibility to set up your event your way, Ridgeland Mansion is a great place to have your special day. The staff there is more then willing to help in any way that they can and to make your big day come together as easily as possible. Not only that, but they are flexible and open to your less then traditional wedding party requests. One couple even requested (and had) a moon bounce! Check them out online at www.CancerSupport-phila.org

Built before 1763, Ridgeland Mansion served as a residence for Fairmount Park directors. Now it serves a different purpose. Aside from being a great place to hold a wedding, it now stands for rejuvenation and hope. This complex is now home to The Suzanne Morgan Center at Ridgeland, an award winning non-profit organization that provides support services to people with cancer and their families. The best part is, 100% of the rental fees directly benefit the Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia – a nonprofit organization that provides, at no cost, a professional program of emotional support and education to people whose lives have been impacted by cancer. “A true sanctuary, featuring a contemplation garden, this facility brings healing and hope into the park.”

Let Them Eat CakeHistorical Romances-Love in Any Age

edding cakes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles, and colors. Every baker has a different outlook and interpretation of a theme or an idea. So what happens when you give over 30 plus bakers a theme and let them run with it? You’re faced with City of Hope’s 8th annual cake bake off, known as “Let Them Eat Cake.” It is held at the Lowes Hotel in Philadelphia. This was quite a site to experience.

City of Hope is a Comprehensive Cancer Center, as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It is an independent biomedical research, treatment, and educational institution that has been around for almost 100 years. In that time, they have helped improved the qual-ity of life of countless patients, as well as pioneered new developments that have brought us ever closer to finding a cure for numerous life-threatening diseases, from cancer to diabetes. City of Hope has chapters all over the United States. This particular event was hosted by the Philadel-phia Chapter.

This year’s theme was historical romances – love at any age. This brought out a variety of cake designs that those in attendance were able to take in visually, as well as taste. This year’s event was one of the most highly attended bake offs that they have hosted. If you want to check it out next year, keep an eye on City of Hope’s Website.

4 Ways to Create a Wedding Your Guests......

ow do you want your guests to feel on your wedding day? Do you want them to be talk ing about how fabulous wedding was for years to come? Nobody can force your guests to have a good time, but there are certainly plenty of tips that you can use to make it hard for them not to enjoy themselves!H

These games are not for every reception, but hopefully you will get inspired. When de-

ciding on these games to play, make sure that you consider

the demographics of your guests.

Entertain Your Guests!

Think about hiring en-tertainers such as dancers,

impersonators, caricaturists, or magicians to perform for

your guests. This is sure to leave a great impression for your

guests!

You can also rent a photo booth. The photos that come

out of these booths can be used in your guest book and can also

be used as a wedding favor!

An inexpensive way to entertain your guests is to

play games on the dance floor such as limbo, hula hoops, and

dance-freeze.Have the DJ play some

upbeat music, and freeze it. Whoever keeps moving

is out!

Find a limbo bar and have two

people hold it. Let the DJ know what you are

doing so he/she can play appropriate music. Then

let the contest begin!

Purchase some hula hoops,

and scatter them around the edge of the dance

floor. People are bound to pick them off and show everyone their

talents!

Get guests to talk to each other!

Remember that you can’t please everyone! You’ll exhaust yourself if you try to listen to everyone’s advice! In the end, it is your day and you should feel like a guest at your

own wedding!

Have a well-planned itinerary!

Have fun!

You want to

avoid having your guests show up at your

wedding and look around at a room full of strangers. Intro-duce your guests to each other.

Your guests will feel much more comfortable and will

make your wedding day more enjoyable.

Have a lunch or dinner the day before the wedding

and introduce your guests. You can have an informal barbeque

or you can use your rehearsal din-ner as a way to have your guests

mingle before the big day.

The seating chart

can become an im-portant role in getting your

guests to have good conversa-tion. You don’t want to make

one couple feel uncomfortable by sitting them in a table of strang-

ers who happen to all be best friends. Seat people to-gether that have simi-

lar interests.

Create an itin-

erary that is well thought out and stick to it! I am not

saying that you should stress out if it is 6:05 and you were supposed to

be introduced at your reception at 6:00. You do, however, want to ensure that your guests are not waiting around with nothing

to do. While you’re taking your photo-graphs between the ceremony and re-ception, give the guests some drinks,

snacks, and/or hors d’oeuvres to enjoy while waiting for the

reception to begin.

Have fun and relax! What guest is going to have

fun when they look at you run-ning around and stressed? If you want your guests to get up and

dance, you should go to the dance floor yourself to get it started! This

is your big day, and you should be able to enjoy it!

WILL LOVE!

What better way to celebrate the 40th birthday of the

classic film, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" than to have a wedding i nspired by

the candy man himself.

Page 84: Issue 2 - Summer 2011

illy Wonka’s world has always been a mix of magic, excitement, and pure imagination. All of these elements translate to a fun and magical wedding theme. That means that you don’t have to be scared to reach a little outside the box and create some breath taking and magical elements for your big day. That can mean edible elements, including a rock candy bouquet. Or an all out candy bar, featuring candy from the man himself, Mr. Willy Wonka. Instead of invitations, send your guests a golden ticket inviting them to the big day.

When the door to the chocolate room opens, the characters are greeted with a chocolate waterfall. Willy Wonka’s factory is the only factory in the world to mix its chocolate by waterfall. Further more, everything in the room is edible. You can eat everything in the room. Why not then make this vision a reality with the cake? That’s what Nick from N Clare was able to do. He engineered a cake, with a fully functional chocolate waterfall, and all of the elements used to decorate the cake were in fact edible. And what better way to top it all off then with an Oompa Loompa and a golden egg.

Dee & Shawn’s EngagementHow they met: Dee and Shawn met in high school. When they first met, Shawn was a very closed person. Dee couldn’t pin point exactly why, but she just had to get to know him. After he accepted her invitation to prom, she soon found herself gushing about him and exclaiming to her best friend that “he was the one”. Later that night, they set up their first official date. The relation-ship lasted for a year before they parted ways. Five years later Dee found Shawn on Myspace and they decided to rekindle their friendship. The friendship quickly escalated into the romance they began years ago.

The proposal: In March 2009, Dee had just returned from a trip visiting her grandparents in Florida. It was a long two weeks, as her and Shawn had never been away from each other for that long. After their excited hellos upon first seeing each other airport, their lives changed forever. Shawn explained that he didn’t want Dee that far away for that long again without knowing they would be together forever. With that, he placed the ring on Dee’s finger.

isha was born in England and all of her family resides there, other than her sisters and parents. In addition to their wedding being a celebration of love, it was also an opportunity to see family members that lived thou-sands of miles away. It was an extremely emotional affair the day of the wedding. Minutes into getting ready, each bridesmaid began tearing up. They had all grown so close to each other over the years and couldn’t find the words to express how they felt about their friend getting married. It wasn’t long into the ceremony before doz-ens of people began to shed tears, including the groom and a few groomsmen. Keith’s brothers used their talents to perform a song that they had written specifically for the occasion. Misha had no idea that this was planned and was completely floored by their heartfelt performance. The ceremony was followed by a small recep-tion in which everyone from the church was invited to. After thanking each attendee, the second and more intimate reception began.

It didn’t take long for the party to begin. In fact, unlike most traditional weddings, Keith and Misha didn’t begin their reception with a first dance. They instead had everyone on the dance floor for a celebration. In addition to the bride and groom, father/daughter, and mother/son dances they also had an anniversary dance to celebrate the long marriages of each of their grandparents plus a special surprise to Misha’s side of the family – a special dance very well known in England.

How they met: They met in high school. Misha was on the volleyball team and Keith was manager of the team.Proposal: While home alone at Keith’s mother’s house, he cooked Misha a three course meal and set up a little table for the two of them. After dinner, he proposed.

Proposal: Paul proposed in August 2009 on Cadilac Mountain in Main.

tefanie and Paul both grew up in the Flemington area. Paul had just found his biological father two years before the wedding so for Paul this was the first event that both parents were able to share with him. For Stefanie, the location was most memorable. Stefanie’s Parents and grandparents were both married at Three Bridges Reformed Church with a reception at the Firehouse just like theirs. Both Stefanie and Paul grew up very close to their grandparents. Pauls maternal grandparents were a huge part of his upbringing as was Stefanie’s. Both sets of grandparents had deceased so a big memorable part of the reception was a banner Stef and Paul had made with their grandparents wedding picture stating “In loving Memory of our grandparents on our wedding day.”

The minister was a very close friend of Stefanie’s that just became ordained and Stefanie and Paul were his second wedding ever. At the Reception, there were two high-lights for Stefanie and Paul. Their wedding favor was called “photo favors” everyone left with a professional photo of themselves. The other fa-vorite was the blow up guitars from the DJ. Ev-erytime someone talks about our wedidng they mention the picture or guitars!
