Greetings from the Board of Directors

    President Charlene Nicholson

    100th

    Newsletter

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Brantwood

Community Services, I would like to thank all

the staff and volunteers of Brantwood for theircommitment to the individuals we support.

Brantwood is a special place where people

are encouraged to dream, to thrive and to

experience life; none of which would be possible

without the dedication of all associated with our

    organization.

The Board of Directors is comprised of a wide

variety of individuals representing a broad facet

of knowledge and experience. From bankers to

community activists to health care providers to

business people, all bring a unique perspective to

the table which contributes to a holistic approach

to the issues under consideration. Whether the

topic is governance, policy, nancial or service

delivery, each decision is weighed against themission, vision and values of Brantwood but

always in the best interest of the individuals we

    support.

These are interesting and challenging times in

terms of service delivery and funding. The Board

of Directors remains committed to ensuring that

Brantwood continues to be a forward thinking,

leading edge organization that sets the bar ever

so slightly out of reach. As was so aptly put by

Robert Browning a mans reach should exceed

his grasp, or whats a heaven for?

Thank you for all you do.

Hydrotherapy Pool that reaches temperatures of 94 degrees and is

fully accessible for all ability levels.

Drop in to Aqua Art, a modied aqua t program that caters to

people with mobility challenges of all ages. This 30 minute low

If you have been visiting the centre lately, and

wondering where all those good smells have been

coming from, The Community Day Program was very

busy baking cookies and mufns for the Working

Together Symposium. This has been an excellent

opportunity for the people supported in the program

    to build some new lifeskills.

    The Community Day

    Program has also been

    hard at work making the

    colourful centrepieces

    for the golf tournament

    and preparing some

    sweet treats for the Sea

    of Blue celebration.

Winifred Rodrigues recently became familiar with Brantwood

and the supports and services we provide in her ongoing journey

to help her husband Leonard achieve quality of life. Leonard

suffered massive cardiac arrest three years ago and Winifred has

been exploring all means possible to help Leonard reach his full

    potential.

Thank you so very much for offering the support of your

kinesiologist! She is truly one of the very few I have met over these

past three years who is dedicated and passionate about helping

others! I pray soon Leonard will have the opportunity to benet

from her support. I am not sure if you heard, but my day was made

when without hesitation she helped me to see if Leonard could

be lifted off the bed to stand from a sitting position. How I had

longed for someone just to give it a try! She is denitely someone

who I just know will help on this support team we need to build

    for Leonard!

I feel so positive now of the possibility to truly have a plan for

    Leonard.You made this step happen!

The 24th Annual Wheelchair Basketball Tournament hosted

by the North Brantford Lions and Canadian Pioneers in

support of Participation House and Brantwood Community

Services raised a total of $11,000. This year, thirteen

teams participated in the event which was a new record. Each team was comprised of individuals of all ages and all

athletic abilities. Participating teams had a couple laughs,

enjoyed some friendly competition, and gained some

rst hand knowledge about the limitations of being in a

    wheelchair.

Congratulations to the winners of the tournament,

Brant Mutual Insurance, spearheaded by Rob

Nagy, and the runner ups, Brant Clown Alley

    Family Entertainment on games well

    played.

Many thanks to the Brantford Lions Club

    and Canadian Pioneers and Scotiabank

West Brant for volunteering their timeand putting forth great efforts to

ensure the event was a success.

On Tuesday May 14, the Brantwood

Foundation will be hosting the 17th

    Annual Charity Golf tournament at

    Northridge Municipal Golf Club.

Community Connections is an initiative at Brantwood to increase

the number of and quality of social connections between

people with developmental challenges and members of the

community. Community Connections celebrates the importance

of recognizing, building, fostering and expanding on relationships

in the lives of the people we support.

Brantwoods Volunteer base has grown with thirteen newrecruits throughout the agency. Since last Spring Brantwood

there have been 69 more connections made between family,

friends and the community. These connections take all shapes

with family, with friends, with community members and

with organizations within the community. Whether the person

supported is enjoying live music with their mentor, or going

to volunteer at a veterinary clinic, these connections

are integral to the people we support as it allows

them to build on existing relationships, develop

    new relationships, foster new interests,

and gives both the mentor and the person

supported a sense of companionship. In

turn, Community Connections is a key

ingredient in the recipe to providing a full

    life.

If you are interested in becoming

    involved in the Community Connections

    volunteer program, contact Deb Thornberry

    at (519) 753-2658 Ext. 461.

    A grandmother and retired Speech

Pathologist, Wynn has a quiet zeal for

life from which many of us at BrantwoodCommunity Services benet, especially

    Rodney.

Wynn has been a Volunteer Friend in

    the Community Connections program

    for Brantwood Community Services

since 2006. During her seven years here

she has become a close companion to

Rodney, a person who resides within one

    of Brantwoods group homes. Rodney

has a developmental challenge and has

very low responses to the environment

around him. Those that know him best

    understand his subtle facial expressions

and body language, but Wynn achieved a

major milestone when after two years ofspending time with Rodney he smiled from

cheek to cheek for the rst time, a moving

indication of the impact Wynn is having in

Rodneys life. In the past few years Rodney

has experienced some changes and has

moved to our enhanced care group home.

Wynn has followed. For Rodney, Wynns

extra mile brings value and meaning

to his life as he gets the opportunity to

experience the beauty and enjoyment of

friendship. Brantwood is grateful to Wynn

for being such an asset to our team!

Shelley from Tollgate has recently reconnected with

her Mother after losing touch for several years.

This relationship was fostered by Brantwood staff.

With openness, two way communication, and an

understanding that both had Shelleys best interest in

mind, Shelley and her Mother have begun meeting on

a monthly basis. While recently going for her monthly

visit, Shelley was surprised with a visit from an oldfamily friend. Shelley immediately connected with her

old friend and appeared to have remembered her. The

two of them spent hours together chatting and laughing

and getting on like lifelong friends. The ladies have

made plans to make the visits more frequent and plan

on getting Facebook so they are able to stay in touch.

The visit was enjoyed by Shelley, staff and Shelleys

Mother, and the memories made during these visits

    will surely last a lifetime.

On November 29, 2012 Ontario Ombudsman Andre

Marin announced an investigation into the provinces

services for adults with developmental disabilities

who are in crisis situations. The investigation is

focusing on two issues, whether the Ministry is

adequately responding to urgent situations involving

adults with developmental disabilities, and whether

it is doing enough to co-ordinate, monitor and

facilitate access to services for them.

By sharing our stories about the unmet needs

within our community and across Ontario we will

help facilitate change by helping him understand

where there is a lapse in service. The Ombudsman

is encouraging anyone whose has information

relevant to the investigation to contact his ofce
