Banksia Grove Christmas Lights Competition
Show Your Xmas Bling! The Banksia Grove Christmas Lights Competition is on again in 2014. Great prizes are on offer for the houses which give the best Christmas bling and enjoyment in our suburb. So get into the Christmas spirit and brighten up the lives of everyone in Banksia Grove. Lights will be judged on Friday 19 December. To enter your property please email your name, address, email and phone number to [email protected]. Let us know if you are ok with sharing your name on the Banksia Grove Facebook page so that other people can admire your efforts.
As 2014 draws to a close I hope it has been a great year for everyone, and I particularly welcome all the residents new to Banksia Grove in 2014. Hopefully you are all settling in well, meeting your neighbours and enjoying what Banksia Grove has to offer. No doubt everyone was looking forward to the opening of Banksia Grove Village which will be a great addition for the community, so we welcome all tenants and business owners, and appreciate that these businesses will offer not only a retail hub but importantly a source of employment, long term for a great many Banksia Grove residents. Moving into summer a great way to encourage spending some time with your neighbours is to organise a street BBQ. The City of Wanneroo have invite packs and resources available to assist with this – for information email Rebecca on [email protected]. Some of the BGRA activities of late include road safety activities. The most noticeable perhaps is the distribution of “Slow Down” bin stickers supplied to the BGRA by the City of Wanneroo. At this point they have been made available to all parents at both local primary schools and via the Facebook page. If you have missed out please email [email protected] with your address. Other related activities include discussions with the Police and City of Wanneroo about streets causing concern for residents in regards to hooning, and also discussions with the developers about the addition of a footpath for school children which was quickly actioned. The next meeting of the BGRA will be Monday 16 February. It would be great to see as many residents as possible attend. The minutes of the October meeting are available on the Facebook page still. We wish all Banksia Grovians and their families a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2015. A special mention for Eleanor and her team preparing for the opening of Joseph Banks Secondary College, and their first intake of Year 7 and 8 students in early February. Good luck to all staff and students.

"The children use this road to skate and ride their bikes and the drivers always drive so carefully and are all so considerate. I am so fortunate to live in an area where drivers are thoughtful and community minded. Thank you!".

Christmas Cookies Recipe This easy-to-make Christmas cookie recipe is a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen at Christmas time, as well as being a fun activity for the whole family. These cookies also make yummy decorations for the Christmas tree to share later! Ingredients: 225g butter 1 cup caster sugar 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups plain flour 1 teaspoon bicarb soda 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 2 free range eggs (59g) Method: Preheat oven to 180ºC and line baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Using a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and sift in the flour, bicarb soda and cream of tartar. Mix until a smooth dough has formed. You may have to scrape the beater down half way through mixing. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface, wrap in plastic wrap and put in the fridge for 30 minutes. Now for the fun part, summon the children! Roll the dough between two sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Cut out biscuits using Christmas shaped cutters and place on prepared baking trays. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden. Transfer to wire racks to cool. Call the wandering children back and let them do their thing with writing icings, smarties and/or lollies!
The Minister for Police, Hon Liza Harvey, attended a Wanneroo forum earlier this year to speak to local seniors about the State Government’s stronger penalties for home invasion offences. As the Minister explained, the new laws mean there is now a minimum sentence that the courts can give. For example: An offender who breaks into a house and violently rapes someone will face a
minimum of 15 years jail;
An offender who breaks into a house and seriously physically assaults someone will face a minimum of 7 years and six months jail; and
An offender who breaks into a house and seriously indecently assaults someone will face a minimum of 5 years and three months jail.
A three year mandatory minimum period of detention will apply to juveniles aged 16 and above who commit serious offences of physical or sexual violence in the course of a home invasion. The existing ‘three strikes’ burglary laws did not work. Our changes mean that for adult offenders, three burglary offences will mean three strikes, not three trips to court for a large number of offences. Adult offenders with three strikes will also face an increased mandatory minimum sentence – from one year to two years. These changes mean that serial criminals who break into homes in your community will be off the streets and in jail where they belong.
Stronger Penalties for Home Invaders

A huge thank you to the Physical Activity Community Program participants who attended the free exercise sessions at Banksia Grove Community Centre. The joint Edith Cowan University and City of Wanneroo four-week program provided six one-hour sessions a week of quality sustainable exercises. This program was created due to community feedback asking 'What would you like at the Banksia Grove Community Centre and what type of exercises are you interested in?' During the course of the 4 week program, a total of 240 men, women and children participated together in exercise sessions such as flexibility and core strengthening, bummy and tummy, exercising with your pram and personal training.
The four Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Sport Science) third year practicum students aimed to action a quality physical health and well-being program that serviced the Banksia Grove Community and surrounding areas, raise awareness of the importance of regular exercise, increase physical activity participation within the community and to provide exercises, education and support for participants to be able to continue exercising post Banksia Grove Community Centre Activity program. Comments from exercise participants suggest ECU students Jadon Gielingh, Brett Cole, Shaun McBurney and Charles Toweh were able to accomplish their mission and more.
90% of program participants said this program has raised their knowledge of the health benefits of engaging in physical activities, 96% program participants said the program has made me want to change my physical activity habits and 100% of program participant's response to 'How did you find the program?' said excellent/good.
"It has been a fantastic program. It’s professional and kids friendly. I love it. I also get advice from the trainers. I would love this program to run again next year." Iris Broeder
The City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts who spoke at the ECU and City of Wanneroo Physical Activity Program Celebration said “The intention is for this program to be used as a future model for more ECU students to engage with and deliver quality physical activities for the community and within City community centres.”
ECU Physical Activity Program a Big Success

Pinjar Road (between Splendens Avenue and Grandis Boulevard) The road was opened to traffic on 7 November 2014. The speed limit of 50 km/h is set by Main Roads. The landscaping of the adjacent eastern verge awaits the completion of earthworks for the future playing fields and Skate Park. Pinjar Road (Glasshouse Drive through to Flynn Drive) The works to complete the access through to Flynn Drive remains on hold while the City of Wanneroo resolves land issues to enable the intersection to be constructed. Rubbish Dumping Thank you for the feedback regarding dumping at the development. We are also concerned and disappointed at the amount of dumping and rubbish that accumulates across the development. We do request builders provide a containment bin for disposal of building products. Meridian Security patrol the estate and can be contacted on 1800 637 434. Also, please contact Dob in a Dumper 1300 273 9 273 or email [email protected] Next issue, we will have a fantastic story about a resident who has been cleaning up rubbish out of the Bush Forever areas. 2014 has been a fantastic year for Banksia Grove with many milestones being achieved. The Banksia Grove Development would like to wish all residents a wonderful Christmas and happy and safe new year.
2014, our 10th anniversary year, is rapidly coming to an end. As always the school year has been a busy and exciting one, with various events celebrating our 10 years as a school here in Banksia Grove and woven in amongst everything our building program which is also coming rapidly to an end. The Pre Primary classes had some special visitors join them for the day. They learnt lots, had new experiences and had tons of fun when the farm yard spent the day at school.
At 11 am on November 11 the whole school commemorated the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1 with a simple but moving service where we looked through the history window and gave thanks for the lives and efforts of those men and women who have fought and died in conflicts around the world for the protection of others.
Staff at Banksia Grove CPS also got into the spirit of service to others and responded to a challenge from some of

the students when they participated in the motor neuron ‘bucket challenge’. Everyone enjoyed the event, particularly those who were able to actually pour the icy water over the ladies. This week Archbishop announced that Banksia Grove is to be a parish in its own right, no longer part of St Anthony’s Wanneroo. It is quite exciting to know that we will be beginning a new Catholic Community in the Archdiocese. Fr Vinh Dong has been appointed as the first priest in charge. He will be moving into the community early in the new year. Fr. Vinh is currently parish priest in Greenwood and has also been parish priest in Lockridge. He is a lovely man and comes to the parish with lots of energy and experience. No doubt he will be asking for suggestions for a new name for our new parish. As we move into Advent and all the preparations for Christmas, sometimes we need to be reminded that it should be a time of peace and joy. In our very hectic and consumer driven world it is easy to forget the reason for the season and take some time out to prepare for Jesus’ birthday and to celebrate, not stress. To everyone a happy and holy Christmas and safe and peaceful 2015 from everyone at Banksia Grove Catholic Primary School.
Once again our annual family day was reported to be an outstanding success with an estimated 3,000 plus visitors attending over the 5 hours duration of the event. It was a lovely spring day and patrons began arriving prior to our advertised starting time of 10-00am. We planned as before to cater for all age groups and abilities and I hope we achieved our aim. In all we had in the region of 40 stalls selling their wares and produce with plenty of opportunity for local business to promote or display a wide variety of merchandise. Many of the stallholders have made tentative bookings for next year which proves to us that Banksia Grove is the beneficial place to be for a return for your time and effort. Onstage outdoors we had Sunday Driver and 3 Piece Suite two first class combos plus some local talent to keep us entertained while on the stage in the undercover area we had the musical aptitude of pupils from St. Stephens and Wanneroo High schools on show.
Out on the oval we could hear the screams of the younger generation enjoying themselves on the many rides and activities all at a reasonable cost with lots of long faces when it was time to go home. Any monies accumulated from rides etc. goes directly back into promoting and funding next year’s event.

It was nice meeting old and new friends and the offer of help in setting up and clearing away from members of the public was well appreciated. Our thanks go to the residents of Banksia Grove and the many visitors who attended for their support and we hope to see you all again next time.
