"What could be more symbolic of Rotary than a great
symphony orchestra, bringing together in perfect
harmony people from many different countries,
nationalities, races, creeds, and cultures,
representing many specialized talents but each
playing a different note on a different instrument,
and each essential for the perfection of the whole?"Address to 1956 Rotary Convention, Philadelphia,

USING VOCATIONAL SERVICE TO BUILD PEACEBy Sakuji Tanaka
In Japan, we place great importance on the value of
work. Whatever we are called to do, we should do it to
the very best of our abilities, with dignity and with pride.
Whether the job is running a country or shining shoes,
there is honor in every vocation.
I grew up embracing this belief, but I had never stopped
to contemplate it. One day, in my third year in Rotary,
we had a speaker at our club who talked about the
purpose of one’s livelihood. He asked, why do we work
hard? What is the importance of our work?
I had never thought about this before. I never saw it as
a question. We work to earn money. We work to be
successful. We work because it is required of us. To me,
this was all.
On that day, I learned about the idea of vocational
service. It was the idea that through our work, we can
serve others. We think about others’ needs, and grow
to care more for the needs of our communities. We build
positive connections between people, and a more
peaceful world.
This is the idea that has changed my life. It did not
change how much I worked, or how hard I worked. But it
changed why I worked, and how I experienced my life. Itas a reference. He desperately needs a job (he is the
only person, capable of earning in the family.), and he

has made me see a higher purpose in everything I do.
The idea of Service above Self is an idea that is unique
to Rotary. But it is an idea that can be embraced by
anyone. And I believe very much that in Rotary, and
beyond Rotary, we can build Peace through Service.
UN International Day of theGirl Child -11 October, 2012Millions of girls around the world face many challengesand barriers in their lives every day—limiting their abilityto reach their full potential. In its inaugural year, the UNInternational Day of the Girl Child (11 October) has beenestablished to help draw the world’s attention to theseissues.A primary focus of this year’s campaign is education andthe tens of millions of girls around the world who are outof school. The difference education makes to a girl’s life isprofound. The knowledge and skills they gain help themto build better futures for themselves. They have betteraccess to health care, greater employment opportunitiesand have the power to make important decisions abouttheir own lives. An extra year of schooling can boost a girl’s future wagesby between 10 to 25 per cent. This has flow-on effectsin reducing poverty as women typically reinvest 90 percent of their income in their family, compared to 30 to40 per cent of men’s income. To recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girlsface around the world, the United Nations GeneralAssembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. On December 19, 2011, the UN General Assemblyadopted the resolution to declare October 11 as theInternational Day of the Girl Child.
A child-centred community development organisation,Plan India is celebrating the first ever 'International Daythe Girl Child' by illuminating iconic monuments in colourpink, said a media report. As a part of it's "Because I am a Girl" (BIAAG) campaign, the organisation has urged people from all walks of life tojoin hands together to support girls' rights. Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb and Purana Quila in Delhi, and Charminar in Hyderabad will be illuminated pink onOctober 11 to create awareness and mobilize support forgirls' rights. It may be noted that the day focused on child marriage, which is a fundamental human rights violation and impactsall aspects of a girlâ•™s life. Child marriage denies a girl of her childhood, disrupts
her education, limits her opportunities, increases her riskto be a victim of violence and abuse, jeopardizes herhealth and therefore constitutes an obstacle to theachievement of nearly every Millennium Development Goal(MDG) and the development of healthy communities. According to reports, around one in three young womenaged 20-24 years were first married before they reachedage 18. One third of them entered into marriage beforethey turned 15. Child marriage results in early andunwanted pregnancies, posing life-threatening risks forgirls. In developing countries also, 90 per cent of births toadolescents aged 15-19 are to married girls, andpregnancy-related complications are the leading cause ofdeath for girls in this age group.
