Mercy University. The team won 73-59 and have an overall record of 9-13. Their MCC record is 5-4. The girls’ next game is Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. at Clarke University. Swwwwish! Add another point for the NAIA player of the week, another to her 1,000- point mark and another to her career high points scored. Jenn Jorgensen, soph- omore guard, has been ahead of the competition on the basketball court. She was named the NAIA women’s basketball player of the week two weeks in a row. Jorgensen said, “I never really thought that I would get the NAIA player of the week, so it came as a shock.” Jorgensen reached two other personal milestones this past month. She has scored over 1,000 points and also achieved her career high of 41 points on Wednesday, Jan. 19 against Ashford University. The team won 69-63. Her career high was 36 points, which she set on Jan. 12 against William Penn University. She tied that score on Jan. 15 against Viterbo University. “I really just go out and hope for the best,” Jorgensen said. Head coach Garey Smith was very happy with Jorgensen getting named player of the week. “She is a pretty good athlete that has worked hard through her career,” Smith said. “Jenn has worked with the team concept, and it shows within her stats that she helps the team. Her quickness helps her get up and down the floor. She is able to get the ball to others when she is double or even triple teamed.” According to Nicole Wilson, junior guard, the team’s motto is whoever has the hot hand that game, get them the ball, and Jorgensen has been the hot hand. Wilson said, “She can hit the open outside shot or can also drive into the lane and that’s awesome.” Jorgensen said her team does a good job getting her the ball, either in a set play or fast breaks. “It definitely helps when you have good teammates around you that are supportive and want to see you succeed. They are willing to pass up a shot to get an assist,” said Jorgensen. To be good at basketball Jorgensen suggests to start young, put extra hours in the off-season, get in shape and don’t settle for just being average.
