From the director’s desk: As Mark Twain said, “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated”… actually not my death but my retirement. As reported, I planned to retire on June 30th, however, plans are just that—a thought about how things will go. The search for an executive director has been extended allowing a number of interested applicants to apply. This is an exciting time of change which will bring new energy to the work accomplished through the Arts Center. When I think of the Arts Center’s accomplishments, I know a lot of programming has been created but more important are the changes that have been created. We have changed individuals as well as the face of downtown with the renovations and the beginnings of an art park. This green space in the middle of downtown has been referred to as the art park, community gathering spot, activity center, etc. It doesn’t matter what it’s called; but how it will function. It’s going to be a public place of beauty anchoring downtown; focusing the arts as a catalyst for renovation and development which will influence how residents imagine creative possibilities for change and growth.

AndersenisamastercraftsmanandaprofessionalconstructionmanagerbytradebutisanaccomplishedphotographerwhohaselegantlydocumentedthepassageoftimeinandaroundhisNDfamilyhomestead.Apatientphotographer,Andersencapturesthesubtletiesoflightandshadowtransformingthecommonplaceelementorlandscapeintotheextraordinary.

Hisphotosareastudyoflight,shadow,texture,formandtonalityfoundinoldfarmbuildingsandagriculturalrelatedimplementsfromtimespastthathavedevelopedtheirownuniquetextureandpatina.Thesetellafascinatingstoryofagricultureandfarmingpracticesatamuchearliertimeandbringmanyquestionstomindwhenyoucarefullyexaminethedetailsoftheseremnants.

In2011,hestartedthisprojectphotographingwithalargeformatviewcamera,ofonce-usedagriculturalobjectsthatarejustlyingaroundinthefieldsandshelterbelts.Tochallengehimself,heplacedconstraintsonthisprojectandselectedanareawithina3-mileradiusofhisregisteredNorthDakotaCentennialFarmlocatedinwesternCassCounty.Heplanstorecordasmanyimagesashecanlocate.Itisachallengethatwilltakeseveralyearstocomplete,ifitcaneverbecompleted.

find textures and form all around, too much to take in at one time.”

Heprocessesthefilmwithanearly1900’spyrostainingdeveloper,thenegativesarescannedandprinteddigitallyonaspecialprinterthatissetupforblackandwhiteprintingwith7shadesofblack/greyinksandnocolorinks.Andersensays,hedoesn’tfindaconflictincombiningoldandnewtechnologies.Withthisapproachheisabletocombinethebestofbothworlds.

Theexhibitincludes29blackandwhitelarge-scalephotographs.Loversofnostalgia,history,artphotographyaswellaslocalphotographersshouldenjoythisexhibition.
