Year 7 News Hub is Buzzing!

The Student View journalists have had a busy few weeks

being involved in a number of fun and exciting events! On

the 20th November our Year 7 News Hub had a blast with

the awesome Hazel Shearing, who is the breaking news

reporter for Buzzfeed. They worked closely with her to

write their feature articles, with useful hints and tips from

her along the way. They also had a Q & A session with

her where they used their journalistic skills to ask her

about her job. “Does it ever get boring?” was one question

asked. A great morning was had by all!

Just a few days later on Wednesday the 22nd November

our TSV journalists had another amazing opportunity; a

visit to the Houses of Parliament to take part in the ONE

Campaign “Poverty is Sexist”. It was very exciting as we

entered the building with MPs running around like headless

chickens on Budget Day! The children were in awe at the

magnitude and decadence of the building and this only

got better when they were met by the Tooting MP, Dr

Rosena Allin-Khan. Students listened to her talk about why

education is so important and then took questions from

the floor. After this our journalists were given time to talk

to the school’s local MP Helen Hayes. They asked many

questions ranging from “What’s it like being an MP?” to

“How can you ensure our safety with the rise of terrorism

and knife crime?” The students had a fantastic time and a

big adventure for many being inside Parliament on a very

busy day.

Our final engagement saw our Year 9 News Hub take part

in a workshop with the inspirational Emma Barnett, who

presents BBC Radio 5 Live mornings, BBC 1’s Sunday

Morning Live and is a guest presenter on BBC Radio 4’s

Woman’s Hour, as well as a Sunday Times columnist!

Students worked closely with Emma writing articles that

ranged from ‘The Royal Engagement’ to ‘Explaining Memes

to the Oldheads’. Emma gave our Year 9 journos the

lowdown on her career to date and shared her feature

article tricks and tips! The students had a brilliant

time and shared their experiences of the workshop

and The Student View programme as a whole with

Manveen Rana, a Senior Broadcast Journalist at

BBC Radio 4, who was recording the session for

BBC Radio 4. We look forward to listening to the

final package when it is aired.

House News House Poetry

Celebration Week

Following on from last week’s

Poetry Celebration, we have

for you another poem:

The Place Where We

Are Right

by Yehuda Amichai

From the place

where we are right

Flowers will never grow

In the spring.

The place where we

are right

Is hard and trampled

Like a yard.

But doubts and loves

Dig up the world

Like a mole, a plow.

And a whisper will be

heard in the place

Where the ruined

House once stood.

We are asking our parents and carers to also

get involved by sending us one of your

favourite poems to publish in next week’s

Parental Bulletin. Please email:

[email protected]

Well Done to everyone who took part in last

week’s Odd Shoes & Socks Day!

It was a great

turnout and

a lot of fun!!
