Jeff Stoughton returns to the World Financial Group Continental Cup after celebrating Team North America’s victory last year in Penticton, B.C.

It’s Show Time! Who, in their wildest dreams, would have ever imagined one of the most prestigious events in the world of competitive curling coming to Las Vegas, Nevada? Well, you better believe it because the World Financial Group Continental Cup gets underway today in the Orleans Arena! A star-studded cast - featuring the biggest names in the international game - are ready to dazzle the crowds in the entertainment capital of the world. Twelve teams, six each for Team North America and Team World, hit the ice in the 10th edition of the Ryder Cup-style competition, with the home side holding a 5-4 edge in championship titles. 7KH VSDUNOLQJ ¿HOG LQFOXGHV QLQHWHDPVWKDWDUH LQ WKH¿QDOSUHSDUDWLRQVto represent their countries next month at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia! 2014 WFG Continental Cup co-managers Jon Killoran and Anne Warner Cribbs have seen this grow from a passing conversation in January, 2012

The Orleans Hotel & Casino alone has 6,200 room-nights booked for the event, as many visitors have chosen to wrap the Continental Cup around other Las Vegas events, attractions and activities. “We anticipate over 45,000 enthusiastic fans to come streaming through the doors of the Orleans Arena WR ZDWFK WKH ZRUOG¶V ¿QHVW PHQ DQGZRPHQ FXUOHUV WDNH SDUW LQ WKH ¿QDOelite competition prior to the Winter Olympic Games,” said Brian Krolicki, Lieutenant Governor, State of Nevada and WFG Continental Cup Co-Chair. “Such a gathering of the world’s curling “family” would set a new WFG Continental Cup attendance record, and would convincingly serve as a tremendous validation for the vibrancy of this sport.” Championship curling comes

complete with its own party. The Patch, situated in the Mardi Gras Ballroom of the Orleans Hotel, is where fans gather in between and after draws to enjoy the tasty selection of food and beverages, test their skills in an assortment of games and dance to the sounds of some great bands. The right to represent Canada at the Olympic Games has been the only thing missing from the Winnipeg skip’s championship resume. She has competed 10 times at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts – the Canadian women’s curling championship – winning four national titles. Her lengthy list of achievements also includes gold and bronze medals at the World women’s curling championship, a pair of victories at the Capital One Canada Cup and seven championships in World Curling Tour Grand Slam events… more than any other female skip in the game.

In a competitive curling career spanning more than two decades at the elite level of the sport, Jeff Stoughton has compiled an extensive list of achievements. The Winnipeg skip has represented Manitoba at the Canadian men’s curling championship 10 times, claiming the legendary Brier Tankard on three occasions, along with winning a pair of gold medals at the world men’s curling championship. 6WRXJKWRQKDVOHGWHDPVLQWRWKHSDVW¿YH&DQDGLDQ&XUOLQJ7ULDOV7KHFORVHVWEUXVKZLWK2O\PSLFJORU\FDPHLQZKHQKHORVWWKH¿QDOWR%UDG*XVKXHLQDODVWURFNPHDVXUHPHQW*XVKXHZHQWRQWRZLQWKHgold medal for Canada at the 2006 Games. The Stoughton team returns to the World Financial Group Continental Cup after celebrating Team North America’s victory last year in Penticton, B.C.

At just 24 years of age, Rachel Homan has already secured a position among the ranks of the very best in the world of competitive curling. Homan is the defending Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion, symbolizing supremacy in Canadian ZRPHQ¶VFXUOLQJ6KHGHIHDWHG-HQQLIHU-RQHVLQWKHFKDPSLRQVKLS¿QDOODVW\HDUDQGDOVRUHSUHVHQWHG2QWDULRat the Scotties in 2012. Homan developed a winning attitude in her early days on the ice, prevailing four consecutive years at the Ontario Bantam Girl’s Curling Championship, for competitors under the age of 16. In the 2010 Canadian Junior Women’s Curling Championship, she won the national title with a perfect 13-0 record.

John Shuster is one of a select group of athletes that have won an Olympic medal for the United States in the sport of curling. In fact, the only time it happened was at the 2006 Games when he threw lead stones for the Pete Fenson team that earned bronze in Turin, Italy. Shuster was back on the Olympic ice surface in 2010 in Vancouver, moving up to skip Team USA, and will return in that role next month in Sochi. Shuster secured the top spot at the 2013 U.S. Olympic Curling Trials in November… but that was only WKH¿UVWVWHSLQSURFHVV,WWRRNDWULSWRWKH:RUOG&XUOLQJ)HGHUDWLRQTXDOLI\LQJHYHQWLQ)XHVVHQ*HUPDQ\EHIRUHWKH'XOXWK0LQQVTXDGORFNHGGRZQDVSRWLQWKH2O\PSLF¿HOG 7KHWHDPZRQWKHLU¿QDO¿YHJDPHVRIWKHFRPSHWLWLRQLQFOXGLQJDSOD\RIIYLFWRU\RYHU-LĜt6QtWLORIWKHCzech Republic.

In his third consecutive appearance for Sweden at the world men’s curling championship, Niklas Edin defeated Team Canada’s Brad Jacobs in the gold-medal match of last year’s international showdown in Victoria, B.C. David Murdoch is recognized as the most successful male curler to ever come out of Scotland, the birthplace of the roaring game. In six appearances at the world men’s curling championship, the 35-year-old skip from Aberdeen has returned home with a medal every time. The impressive collection includes three pairs of gold, silver and bronze medals. The most recent bronze came with the support of his current team at the 2013 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship in Victoria, B.C. ‘We’re not in Canada anymore, eh.’

By Colin Kelly

My knowledge of the words “skip” and “stone” comes from skipping stones on water as a kid. And FXUOLQJ",WKLQN,GLGTXLWHDELWRIWKDWZLWKRXQFHbottles back in college. But skips and stones take on an entirely different meaning in the fastest-growing winter sport in the world. As for water, well, I learned curling involves the solid version of it. I know a little more about movies. In the timeless FODVVLF¿OP³7KH:L]DUGRI2]´'RURWK\XWWHUHGWKHmemorable line: “We’re not in Kansas anymore.” By the time the opening ceremonies of the 10th &RQWLQHQWDO&XSRI&XUOLQJZHUH¿QLVKHG:HGQHVGD\QLJKWVXUHO\WKHPDMRULW\RIIDQVRI¿FLDOVDQGHYHQthe competitors had to be saying, “We’re not in Canada anymore, eh.” If the 69-degree weather didn’t give it away during a glorious January day, then surely the bikini-clad HVFRUWV DQG ³ELNLQL´ PLJKW HYHQ EH VWUHWFKLQJ LWwho led Team North America and Team World into The Orleans Arena last night let everyone know they were indeed in Las Vegas. But tradition wasn’t entirely done away with, as the Las Vegas-based Desert Skye Pipes and Drums belted out “Scotland the Brave” while marching the teams through the casino at The Orleans en route to the arena. That sight surely stunned gamblers running their money through slot machines or throwing down some chips at the blackjack table.,W¶VWKH¿UVWWLPHWKLVHYHQWKDVEHHQKHOGRXWVLGH

Canada, but you sure wouldn’t know it from those in attendance. The overwhelming majority, be they players, fans or volunteers, clearly hail from the Great White North. With the fabulous weather, WKH\ZHUHQ¶WGRQQLQJWRTXHVEXWWKHLUDFFHQWVZHUHunmistakable. (TXDOO\ DV XQPLVWDNDEOHZDV WKH WKLFN6FRWWLVKbrogue of World Curling Federation President Kate Caithness, who perhaps had the understatement of the night as she launched the opening ceremonies by

declaring, “We would like to extend a warm welcome to all curling fans.” Compared to the usual climate for this event, it was ÀDWRXWKRWDQGDFRXSOHWKRXVDQGIDQVZHUHDOUHDG\at a boil as they raucously cheered on the two teams, who today leave behind the fun and get started on the games. It’ll be four days of wall-to-wall curling, frenetic fans and a party atmosphere. And if Vegas is famous for anything, it’s the ability to throw a good party.
