The Wooden Bowl – Touching StoryA frail old man went to live with his son, daughter–in–law, and a four–year old grandson. The old man's hands

trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass often milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter–in–law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about grandfather," said the son. I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor. So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the dinner table. Since grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. Sometimes when the family glanced in grandfather's direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four–year–old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up." The four–year–old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes ever observe, their ears ever listen, and their minds ever process the messages they absorb. If they see us patiently provide a happy home atmosphere for family members, they will imitate that attitude for the rest of their lives. The wise parent realizes that every day building blocks are being laid for the child's future.

Let us all be wise builders and role models. Take care of yourself … and those you love, today, and every day!

The new funding model for The Rotary Foundation was developed because our ability to continue "doing good in the world" depends heavily on the Foundation having long-term financial stability. In the interests of improved communication and understanding of the changes, here are 10 important things to know about the new model, which becomes effective on 1 July 2015.1. Rotarians and clubs will benefitRotary's strength lies in the talents and dedication of its members and clubs. The recent recession showed that we must have adequate reserves in our Rotary Foundation to ensure that we don't have to cut programs and services in times of poor investment returns, and the increased volatility in financial markets emphasized the need for an adequate level of reserves. The new funding model is necessary to ensure resources are available to support the work of Rotarians now and in the future. The Foundation's current policy is to maintain an operating reserve equal to three years' worth of operating expenses.2. PolioPlus Fund contributions are not affected in any way3. Endowment Fund Contributions are not affected in any way4. District Designated Funds are not affected in any way5. Five percent of Annual Fund contributions are set aside from the World FundAfter Annual Fund contributions are invested, 50% will continue to go to District Designated Funds (DDF) and 50% to the World Fund. The 5% being set aside to help pay for the Foundation's operating expenses will come from the World Fund, but will only be used if needed to pay those expenses or to fully fund the operating reserve. If they are not needed for those purposes, they may remain in the World Fund for grants.6. Five percent of cash contributions for global grants set asideUnder the current system, cash contributed in support of a grant by clubs and districts requires administration, but provides no investment income to meet the cost of that administration, because the funds are not retained by the Foundation for any

length of time and therefore do not generate investment income. The 5% set aside from cash contributions for global grants will help pay the costs of processing, etc. It is not uncommon for many clubs to support a single global grant, and some clubs include payments from many members, thus requiring donor recognition to be processed for each contribution. Cash may also need to be converted into one of the 28 official Rotary currencies and then transferred to an international bank account for the project to be implemented.7. Up to 10% of corporate gifts set asideUsing up to 10% of large corporate contributions for operating expenses is a well-accepted practice among donors to charities. By obtaining such gifts, the Foundation can increase support for the projects in our areas of focus. Our polio eradication efforts, for example, have benefitted greatly from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's support. Up to 10% of these gifts will contribute to our administration costs, thus leaving more funds to support the grants for clubs and districts.8. A communication plan is in placeThe Trustees recognize that open, clear communication fosters Rotarians' continued support of, and active involvement in, Foundation programs. The first step in the funding model communication plan was an announcement on rotary.org with a link to Securing Our Foundation's Future. Watch for more information in Rotary media, coming soon.9. Training and resources are being developedTraining manuals for officers and committees at the district and club levels are being updated, and webinars and e-learning modules are being developed. For details, contact [email protected]. The Foundation has a record of financial stewardship and transparencyOur Foundation has consistently earned high ratings for sound fiscal management from Charity Navigator and other agencies. WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

1. This will be the first ever World Cup to use goal-line technology. There has been so much controversy surrounding World Cup goals in past years that the referee will now have the benefit of 14 camera and a mainframe computer to help him make calls.

2. This World Cup will witness only one new nation at the finals, with Bosnia-Herzegovina ready to play in their first major tournament.

3. The 2014 World Cup will see matches take place in 12 different cities, more than any other finals on record. There will be games in Manaus, Fortaleza, Natal, Recife, Salvador, Cuiaba, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, and Porto Alegre.

4. The smallest stadium, by capacity, is Arena de Baixada, which holds around 38,000 guests. The Maracana will seat up to about 75,000.

5. FIFA announced that the total Gross Capacity for the 2014 World Cup is estimated at 3,720,225 fans. Tickets were sold through a random selection draw for the first two phases, and the last minute sales phase was first come, first served.

7. This year's FIFA World Cup mascot is Fuleco the Armadillo, as voted on by the Brazilian public.

8. The caxirola, a maraca-like instrument, has been named the official noisemaker of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, federal officials have banned it from all 12 soccer grounds for safety reasons. That hasn't stopped the caxirola (pronounced ka-shee-role-ah) from making noise outside of the matches.

9. This is the second time that Brazil will host the World Cup -- the first time was in 1950 in which they lost to Uruguay. Therefore, Brazil has never won a World Cup on their home turf.

10. The official slogan of the 2014 FIFA World Cup is "Juntos num so ritmo," or "All in one rhythm."
