IS Department and IS Society General Assembly for First Semester
SY 2013-2014
The International Studies Society (ISSoc) opened School Year
2013-14 with its First General Assembly at the Little Theater last
July 8, 2013. Highlights of the General Assembly included talks by
invited speakers, Mitchie Boncodin (AB-ISD 2010) and Chantal Marie
Claravall (AB-ISP 2011); as well as the awarding of the You Make
the IS Proud cards by the IS Department.
Other activities during the event also included the oath taking
of the new International Studies Society (ISSoc) officers and
moderator administered by CIHDS Dean, Dr. Caridad Tharan; the Video
Presentation of the IS Department faculty roster and year-level
mentors for the 1st semester, SY 2013-14; the welcoming of the
First Year IS
students and transferees; and the Presentation of last years
ISSoc accomplishments, !nancial report and plans for SY 2013-14 by
the ISSoc Officers. The event ended with the Closing Remarks by
Prof. Pacita Fortin, IS Department Assistant Chairperson and ISSoc
Moderator. Nearly 75% of the 316 IS students attended the
event.
IS Department Awards You Make the IS Proud Cards to Student
Achievers
Every semester, the IS Department awards You Make the IS Proud
cards to IS students who demonstrate exemplary performance in
academics, student leadership, athletics, performing arts,
volunteer service. Awardees included Deans Listers for the 2nd
semester,
SY 2012-13, IS Team Debaters, student representatives and
presenters in international and national conferences, student
leaders, athletes, performing artists (singers, dancers, theater
arts group) and volunteers.
A total of 83 You Make the IS Proud cards were given to the
following !elds: Athletics (8), Scholars (11), International
Exchange Programs (2), Model United Nations of the Far West

IS Society and Pax Christi Join Worldwide Celebration
of Nelson Mandela Day
The International Studies Society (ISSoc) in collaboration with
Pax Christi set up an exhibit with a short program at the SMT Foyer
last July 18 to celebrate the Nelson Mandela Day, an annual
international day of humanitarian action declared through United
Nations resolution 64/13.
This years theme, Take Action and Inspire Change. Make Every Day
a Mandela Day! featured the life and contributions of !rst South
African President Nelson Mandela who was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1993 in ending the apartheid regime in South Africa.
The event included an awarding of certi!cates of recognition to
IS students who spent 67 minutes of their time setting up the
exhibit to represent the 67 years that Nelson Mandela has served
humanity.
The exhibit opening and program was led by ISSoc President
Rejane Torrecampo and Pax Christi President Lyka Cabacungan.
Fifty-eight students together with the Dr. Caridad Tharan (CIHDS
Dean), Prof Gigi Francisco (IS Department Chairperson), Dr. Loreta
Castro & Dr Jasmin Galace (Directors of the Center for Peace
Education) and Prof. Pacita Fortin (IS Department Assistant
Chairperson and ISSoc Moderator) attended the event
IS Society (ISSoc) is the co-curricular student organization of
the IS Department while Pax Christi is the peace advocates student
organization of the Center for Peace Education (CPE).

IS Department attends DFA Lecture on Foreign Service
International Studies students visited the Department of Foreign
Affairs (DFA) in Pasay City last July 24, 2013 to attend a lecture
on Foreign Service and view an exhibit entitled, The Philippine
Foreign Service: Its Beginnings. The IS Department hired a
60-seater bus to bring the students and faculty to DFA. The
students were assisted by Prof. Ronaldo Bong Joves, a part-time IS
faculty who works in the DFA and were accompanied by Prof. Pacita
D. Fortin, IS Department Assistant Chairperson and Prof. Ryan
Silverio, IS Faculty, during the visit. Topics discussed during the
lecture were: The Philippine Diplomacy during the Japanese Period
by Prof. Ricardo T. Jose, Ph.D, UST Department of History; The
State Department Boys: The Pioneers of the Philippine Foreign
Service by Mr. Marciano R. de Borja, Special Assistant, DFA Office
of the Undersecretary for Administration and DFA at Padre Faura by
Ambassador Alfredo L. Almendrala, Jr.
The International Studies Society, in partnership with the
Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) and the Institutional Network
for Social Action (INSA) hosted Masustansiyang Pagkain sa Swak na
Budget, a nutrition talk and cooking demo, to give meaning to the
schools Environment Week Cel-ebrations theme, Green All You
Can!

Ruta, registered Nutritionist and Dietician I from the Nutrition
Foundation of the Philippines while the cooking demo was led by
Chef Mohammed Ahmed Karim, Junior Sous Chef in Lentrecote at
Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Representatives from Park 7, one
of INSAs partner communities, and IS students attended the
event.
The event was held last July 30, 10:00am-12nn, in the ESI
Conference Room.
International Studies Students Participate in 2nd Philippine
Model
Congress
Eleven (11) International Studies students joined the 2nd
Philippine Model Congress held at the Philippine Senate Building
last July 28 & 29. The Philippine Model Congress is an annual,
student-run simulation conference on the legislative processes in
the Philippines.
The participants were selected from more than 1,400 applicants
and joined 500 other student leaders and achievers from all over
the Philippines during the 2-day Congress and passed bills that
will be compiled and passed to the nations legislators for their
perusal and possible sponsorship in their respective Houses.
Bills passed during the 2nd Congress were a Students Rights
Bill, a Bill on Good Governance, and a Bill amending RA 9262 or the
Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act, which was
sponsored by 4th year ISD student Arisa Junio.

General Assembly.
Alumnae Talk on Life after Graduation and Graduate Studies
Two graduates of AB International Studies were invited to
deliver talks on pursuing graduate studies right after college.
Prof. Gigi Francisco,
IS Department Chairperson gave the introduction of speakers. The
two invited speakers were Mitchie Boncodin and Chantal Marie
Claravall.
Mitchie Boncodin currently works at the International
Organization for Migration (IOM), an intergovernmental organization
under the United Nations system. Mitchie earned her AB
International Studies degree with specialization in Development
Studies, minor in Gender Studies and graduated Cum Laude in 2010.
She was also the 1st recipient of the Endeavor Exchange Program who
spent a semester of her college education in the Royal Melbourne
Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia. Chantal Marie
Claravall is currently taking up her Master of Arts in
International Studies in the IS Department. Chantall !nished her
AB-IS degree with specialization in International Politics, minor
in Peace Studies in 2011.
Other IS alumnae who welcomed the IS students through
pre-recorded video messages were Athena Gabrielle Keow Abanto
(AB-ISI 2010), former Pax Christi Internal Vice President and 2010
Senior Council Member of the Year, who now works as an Information
and Communications Assistant in Development Alternatives with Women
for a New Era (DAWN); Kathleen Aquino (AB-ISD 2010), former ISSoc
President in 2010, who currently works as Program Officer for
Library Development in Ahon Foundation, Inc. and Christa Margarita
Mixie Rivera (AB-ISI 2010), former SANGGU President and Sr. Mary
Alice O Rourke awardee who now works at the Kaya Natin Movement,
Ateneo School of Government.
