Explanatory Notes

The Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on the basic production data of major non-food and industrial crops namely, abaca, coconut, coffee, rubber, sugarcane and tobacco. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture which is released quarterly by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS). This 4th quarter 2012 issue of the Bulletin provides preliminary estimates of production and area planted for permanent crops and area harvested for temporary crops in January-December 2012 and preliminary estimates of production in October-December 2012. The data on area and bearing trees are reported on a semi-annual basis. Area, production and number of bearing trees data are sourced from the Quarterly Crop Production Survey (CrPS) of the BAS and the Quarterly Coconut Production Survey (QCPS) of the Philippine Coconut Authority and BAS. Data on cane milled are from the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

Production, Area and Number of Mature Trees

Abaca

October-December 2012

Production of abaca fibers decreased by 6.34 percent or from 14.98 thousand mt in 2011 to 14.03 thousand mt in 2012.

Production in Davao Region dropped by 12.96 percent due to the adverse effects of Typhoon Pablo that badly hit the provinces of Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental in the first week of December.

Production in Western Visayas went down by 43.00 percent due to low demand and lesser buying of abaca fibers resulting from the high inventory in Aklan and Iloilo.

The output of Eastern Visayas also declined by 9.46 percent since the municipalities of Mahaplag, Burauen, Bayabay, Kananga, Sogod, Bontoc, Maasin, St. Bernard and Ormoc City were continuously affected by mosaic and bunchy top diseases.

January-December 2012

Annual production of abaca fiber went down by 0.12 percent from 68.61 thousand mt in 2011 to 68.53 thousand mt in 2012 (Table 1).

Bicol Region topped all other regions with a share of 33.69 percent in the national production. Other top ranking regions were Eastern Visayas and Davao Region with shares of 28.00 percent and 12.90 percent, respectively (Table 3).

Area planted of abaca dropped by 0.12 percent, from 139.77 thousand hectares in 2011 to 139.61 thousand hectares in 2012 (Table 2).

Coconut

October-December 2012

In the 4th quarter of 2012, coconut production increased by 0.64 percent, from 4.20 million mt to 4.23 million mt.

Production of matured nuts went up by 0.59 percent while output of young coconut surged by 2.89 percent.

Coconut production in Davao Region dipped by 7.57 percent due to strong winds and floods brought about by Typhoon Pablo.

Production in Eastern Visayas went down by 0.95 percent due to: o infestation of brontispa longissima in Southern Leyte, o adverse effects of strong winds and rains in Leyte, and o low price of copra in the region.

Increased production in the rest of the country offset the negative outputs of the above provinces. Cited for the upsurge in production were: o Less weather disturbances in Isabela, Aurora, Pangasinan, Camarines

Sur, Masbate, Albay and Sarangani. o Increase in number of bearing trees in Ilocos Norte, La Union,

Laguna, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Sultan Kudarat, Misamis Occidental and Maguindanao.

o Salt fertilization in Palawan, Western Visayas provinces and Lanao del Norte.

The top producing regions were Davao Region, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula and CALABARZON (Figure 2).

January-December 2012

Coconut production in 2012 rose by 3.83 percent from 15.24 million mt in 2011 to 15.83 million mt (Table 1).

The top producing regions in 2012 with their shares in the national output were Davao Region, 17.15 percent; Northern Mindanao, 11.47 percent; Eastern Visayas, 11.19 percent; Zamboanga Peninsula, 10.77 percent; and CALABARZON , 8.96 percent (Table 4).

Coffee

October-December 2012

Coffee production in the 4th quarter of 2012 shrank by 3.10 percent, from 39.58 thousand mt in 2011 to 38.35 thousand mt in 2012.

Coffee crops in Iloilo and Negros Oriental were adversely affected by strong winds and rains in the flowering stage, thus, production in these provinces dropped by 5.65 percent and 27.66 percent, respectively.

Coffee crops in Compostela Valley drop in production were severely affected by typhoon Pablo and this contributed in a 15.11 percent.

Shifting to lakatan and cavendish brought production down by 7.87 percent in Davao City.

Cutting of trees was cited in Talipao, Sulu.

There was movement of harvest to the 1st quarter of 2013 due to late maturity of coffee berries in Batangas.

The top producing regions during the period were SOCCSKSARGEN, Davao Region and ARMM (Figure 3).

January-December 2012

The yearly production of coffee in dried berries improved by 0.47 percent (Table 1).

Area planted posted a slight increase of 0.003 percent while number of bearing trees went up by 0.17 percent.

Robusta is the major variety with 71.76 percent share in the 2012 production (Figure 4).

The top producers in 2012 were SOCCSKSARGEN, Davao Region and ARMM with respective shares in the national production of 31.33 percent, 21.31 percent and 11.95 percent (Table 5).

Rubber October-December 2012

The October-December 2012 production of rubber cuplump went up by 0.47 percent, from 159.31 thousand mt in 2011 to 160.06 thousand mt in 2012. This was due to: o Increase in the number of tappable trees in Laguna, Palawan,

Bukidnon, North Cotabato, Basilan and Agusan del Norte; and o Higher yield due to sufficient rains raised production in North

Cotabato.

Production during the period would have been higher had not been to: o Early defoliation and frequent rains hampered harvesting in

Zamboanga Sibugay; and o The adverse effects of Typhoon Pablo to the rubber crops in

Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental.

The top producing regions during the period were Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN and ARMM (Figure 5).

January-December 2012

Production of rubber surged by 4.06 percent in 2012 from 425.71 thousand mt in 2011, it went up to 443.00 thousand mt in 2012 (Table 1).

Area planted to rubber also increased by 8.75 percent from 161.57 thousand hectares in 2011 (Table 2).

The number of mature or tappable trees also increased from 42.06 million trees in 2011 to 43.35 million trees or by 3.05 percent in 2012.

The top rubber producing regions in 2012 were Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN and ARMM with respective contribution of 42.63 percent, 38.32 percent and 9.22 percent to the annual national production (Table 6).

Sugarcane

October-December 2012

The production of sugarcane increased by 18.94 percent in the last quarter of 2012 (Table 1).

The increase in output was attributed to increase in area harvested in Negros Occidental and Bukidnon.

The top producing regions were Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Central Luzon and Central Visayas (Figure 6).

Most of the harvested sugarcane was processed as sugar (Figure 7).

San Carlos Bioenergy, Inc. in Negros Occidental resumed production of ethanol alcohol while Green Future Innovations, Inc. in Isabela reported a 66.20 thousand mt sugarcane production for ethanol.

High demand for panocha/muscovado in Albay increased production of sugarcane for this particular product in this province by 520 mt.

Only six (6) provinces, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Isabela, Quirino, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat processed sugarcane for basi/vinegar during the quarter. Fertilizer usage in Abra and Quirino were cited.

January-December 2012

Production of sugarcane was lower by 6.83 percent in 2012 at 26.44 million mt compared to the demand motivated high output in 2011 of 28.38 million mt.

The top producing region was Western Visayas with 55.14 percent of the total national output. Other top ranking regions were Northern Mindanao and Central Visayas with shares of 15.30 percent and 7.84 percent, respectively.

Area harvested declined from 439.70 thousand hectares in 2011 to 431.04 thousand hectares in 2012, or less by 1.97 percent (Table 2).

October-December 2012

The reported tobacco production was only for the Native variety since Virginia and Other varieties were still at their planting stages.

About 92.18% of the national production was produced in Misamis Oriental of Northern Mindanao (Figure 8). The high price of native tobacco last year influenced the decision of farmers in Misamis Oriental to increase the production area, thus, increasing the provincial output by 178.22 mt or by 103.75 percent.

January-December 2012

Tobacco production increased by 6.97 percent, from 44.94 thousand mt in 2011 to 48.08 thousand mt in 2012 (Table 1).

Area harvested to tobacco increased by 5.55 percent, from 32.24 thousand hectares to 34.03 thousand hectares in 2012 (Table 2).

Virginia is the major variety of tobacco produced with a share of 49.18 percent in the national production (Figure 9).
