1. System Requirements In order to run iSpring Kinetics, your computer must meet the following system requirements:

• 512 MB RAM, 1024 MB recommended

• 500 MB available disk space • Microsoft® Windows® XP/Vista/7 (32- or 64-bit editions) • Microsoft® PowerPoint® 2003/2007/2010 (32- or 64-bit editions) • Microsoft Word 2003/2007/2010 (32- or 64-bit editions) • Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher • Adobe Flash Player 10.1 or higher

To install Adobe® Flash® Player ActiveX on your computer: 1. Open http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash in Internet Explorer

Make sure you use Internet Explorer for this task, because other browsers will install a different plugin (not ActiveX).

2. Follow instructions on that page to install Adobe Flash Player ActiveX. 2. Quick Start As you start iSpring Kinetics, you will see a Quick Start screen, which gives you access to basic operations with the program. From this window, you can create a new interaction, open an interaction from the list of recent interactions, or choose to browse online resources devoted to iSpring Kinetics.

If iSpring Kinetics hasn't been activated yet, there will be a notification at the bottom of the window. After you activate the product, this notification will disappear.

Option Description

Create a New Interaction

This list contains four interaction types sorted by the last modified interaction. Choose the type of the interaction that you want to create or click More Interactions... to see detailed info about each interaction and its preview.

More Click this button to create a new interaction. You will be prompted to

Option Description

Interactions... choose an interaction type.

Recent Interactions

This pane shows a list of interactions that you have recently opened. You can also click the Browse button and open an interaction, which is not listed in the recent documents.

Resources This panel lists links to online resources devoted to iSpring Kinetics: online help, forums, and support. These links will open in your default web browser.

3. Interactions With iSpring Kinetics you can create the following four interactions:

• Timeline • Directory • FAQ • 3D Book • Timeline • Directory • FAQ • 3D Book

3.1. Timeline Timeline is an iSpring Kinetics interaction that can be used to visualize events that happened along a certain period of time.

A timeline is divided into periods. In fact, when you create a new timeline, it already appears with a blank period. Each period may contain as many events as you want. So here is the basic structure of a timeline (optional elements are shown in square brackets):

When you create a timeline, it already contains one period. Now you can add more periods and events to it and provide a brief or detailed description to each element of the timeline.

Adding Period 1. On the toolbar, click the Add Period button.

or Right-click any place on the Events pane and choose New Period in the contextual menu.

2. Type a period name in the Period Title field. 3. Select a color from the drop-down menu. 4. Provide a description, add images, Flash movies, videos and/or audio narration.

Adding Event 1. On the timeline, select a period to which you want to add an event. 2. On the toolbar, click the Add Event button.

3. Type an event name in the Event Title field. 4. Adjust event's position on the timeline. 5. Provide a description, add images, Flash movies, videos and/or audio narration.

You can adjust the position of each period and event by dragging and dropping it in the desired location within the Timeline.

Duplicating Period 1. Select a period on the Events pane. 2. Right-click the selected period on the Events pane and choose Duplicate Period

in the contextual menu.

The selected period will be duplicated along with the texts, images, audio, video and Flash files but without the added events.

Duplicating Event 1. Select an event on the Events pane. 2. Right-click the selected event on the Events pane and choose Duplicate Event in

the contextual menu.

The selected event will be duplicated along with the added texts, images, audio, video and Flash files. Introduction and summary cannot be duplicated.

Deleting Period or Event 1. Select a period or an event, which you want to delete, on the Events pane.

Note: To select several items, click them while holding down the Shift or Ctrl button.

2. Click the Delete button on the toolbar or press the Delete key on your keyboard. or Right-click the selected periods and events on the Events pane and choose Delete Selected in the contextual menu.

Moving Period or Event • Drag it to a desired location with a mouse.

When your timeline is ready, enter its name and proceed to publishing it to Flash.

Timeline propeties will open in a new window. Here you can change the default fonts and customize the look of your timeline.

Property Description

Title font Choose a font for the timeline title.

Content font

Choose a default font to be used for text in your timeline. When you change the default font, the program will ask if you want to apply the change to all content. You can always change this font for selected text using the drop-down font menu on the toolbar.

Show an event list in the title bar Clear this checkbox to hide the drop-down box with events.

Display a period description Select this checkbox to show a description when a period is selected on the timeline.

Show a list of the period events at the end of the description

Select this checkbox to show a list of events in the period selected on the timeline.

Title of the period events list Enter the events list title. Events are listed at the end of each period description.

Table 1. Text Formatting

Font When you start a new description, the default font will be Arial. But you can always choose a different font from the drop-down menu on the editor toolbar.

Size To change a font size, choose the new size from the corresponding drop-down menu.

Style There are three font styles you can apply to selected text -- bold, italic, and underline. To change font style back to normal, select text and click the corresponding font style button one more time.

Color You can choose the font color using the corresponding drop-down menu.

Alignment To change paragraph alignment, click inside a paragraph to select it and then click the corresponding alignment button.

Bullets You can quickly add bullets to existing lines of text. To do it, select the corresponding text and click the Bullets icon on the text formatting toolbar. To turn on/off automatic bulleting, click the Bullets icon and type in the text.

Indent You can indent text or bulleted list by using the Increase or Decrease Indent buttons.

Hyperlink You can add hyperlinks to the text elements.

Text You can add text paragraphs.

Image You can add multiple images to each interaction item.

Flash You can add Flash movies to each paragraph.

Video You can add video files to each interaction item.

Moving Text Paragraphs You can move paragraphs by dragging their handles (the leftmost part of the pane with three vertical dots).

Adding Hyperlink 1. Select text that you want to convert to a hyperlink. 2. Click the Hyperlink button on the editor toolbar.

3. Choose a hyperlink type using the radio buttons.

o Web page Enter a web page address in the corresponding field. You can try the URL by clicking the Open link (the program will open the URL in your default web browser). You may also want to select the Open in a new browser window checkbox. If you don't, a click on this link will open a target page in the same window.

o Interaction Item Choose an item from the drop-down menu.

o E-mail Type an e-mail address in the corresponding field.

4. Click OK.

Removing Hyperlink

1. Click the hyperlink in the text. 2. Click the Hyperlink button on the editor toolbar. 3. Click the Remove link.

Adding Images 1. Click the Add Image button on the toolbar or on the new snippet bar.

2. Choose an image file in the standard Open dialog.

The image will appear in the content pane. Now you can resize it, adjust its alignment, and move it if you want.

Resizing Images 1. Click an image to select it.

You will see sizing handles (square dots) on the border of the selected image. 2. Drag one of the sizing handles to change the size of the selected image.

o Use sizing handles in image corners to preserve aspect ratio of the selected image.

o Sizing handles placed in the middle of image borders will change image size only in one direction (modifying aspect ratio of the selected image)

Moving Images You can drag an image to a desired location holding the left mouse button.

Importing Audio 1. Click the Import Audio button on the editor toolbar.

2. Choose an audio file in the standard Open dialog.

Recording Audio Narration 1) Click the Record button in the Audio area. 2) Read your narration into the microphone. 3) Stop recording by clicking the Stop button. Moreover, the Narration script window has been added for your convenience. You can add your narrative description into the window and read from it while you record. If you close the window, the application will automatically save the text you've put there. You can play the imported file right in the editor by clicking the Play button.

Deleting Audio To delete an audio file or audio narration, click the Delete button on the editor toolbar,

1. Click the Add Video button on the toolbar or on the new snippet bar.

2. Choose a video file in the standard Open dialog.

Importing a video may take some time depending on the file size. Once importing starts, you will see its status in the progress window. The video will appear in the content pane. Now you can resize it, adjust its alignment, move it if you want. To preview a video, click the Play button.

Resizing Video

1. Click a video to select it. You will see sizing handles (square dots) on the border of the selected video.

2. Drag one of the sizing handles to change the size of the selected video

o Use sizing handles in the video corners to preserve its aspect ratio. o Sizing handles placed in the middle of video borders will change the video

To back up your interaction, switch on the 'Automatically create interaction backups' option.

If the option is enabled, a backup file of the previous version is created each time when you save an interaction. Each new backup copy replaces the previous backup copy. Kinetics saves the backup file in the same folder as the original interaction. The name of the backup file adds the word 'backup' to the file name, for example: 3D Book and 3D Book (backup).

Property Description

Title font Choose a font for the directory title.

Content font

Choose a default font to be used for text in your directory. When you change the default font, the program will ask if you want to apply the change to the content. You can always change this font for selected text using the drop-down font menu on the toolbar.

Property Description

Show alphabet Clear this checkbox to hide the alphabet for glossary navigation.

Generate automatically

Select this radio button to generate the glossary navigation automatically using the first letters of your terms. That option may come in handy if you use terms in several languages.

Use a predefined alphabet

Select this radio button and then choose a predefined alphabet from the drop-down menu. This way you will use a standard alphabet of the chosen language for your glossary navigation.

Use a custom character set

Select this radio button and then type letters that will appear in the glossary navigation bar. You can also save your string of letters as a custom alphabet for future use.

Hide unused Select this checkbox to hide characters that do not point to any term in

3.2.8. Managing Video

Adding Video 1. Click the Add Video button on the toolbar or on the new snippet bar.

2. Choose a video file in the standard Open dialog.

Importing a video may take some time depending on the file size. Once importing starts, you will see its status in the progress window. The video will appear in the content pane. Now you can resize it, adjust its alignment, move it if you want. To preview a video, click the Play button.

3.2.9. Creating Backups Creating backups is enabled by default. You can turn on/off backups creation option in the Application Menu -> Options.

To back up your interaction, switch on the 'Automatically create interaction backups' option.

If the option is enabled, a backup file of the previous version is created each time when you save an interaction. Each new backup copy replaces the previous backup copy. Kinetics saves the backup file in the same folder as the original interaction. The name of the backup file adds the word 'backup' to the file name, for example: 3D Book and 3D Book (backup).

Duplicating Questions and Answers 1. Select one or multiple questions on the FAQ Questions pane.

Note: To select several items, click them while holding down the Shift or Ctrl button.

2. Right-click the selected questions on the FAQ Questions pane and choose Duplicate Question in the contextual menu.

The selected questions will be duplicated along with the added texts, images, audio, video and Flash files. Introduction and summary cannot be duplicated.

Deleting Questions and Answers 1. Select a FAQ entry, which you want to delete, on the FAQ Questions pane.

To modify FAQ properties, click the Properties button on the toolbar.

FAQ properties will open in a new window. Here you can change the default fonts of your FAQ interaction.

Style There are three font styles you can apply to selected text -- bold, italic, and underline. To change font style back to normal, select text and click the corresponding font style button one more time.

Color You can choose the font color using the corresponding drop-down menu.

Alignment To change paragraph alignment, click inside a paragraph to select it and then click the corresponding alignment button.

Bullets You can quickly add bullets to existing lines of text. To do it, select the corresponding text and click the Bullets icon on the text formatting toolbar. To turn on/off automatic bulleting, click the Bullets icon and type in the text.

Indent You can indent text or bulleted list by using the Increase or Decrease Indent buttons.

Hyperlink You can add hyperlinks to the text elements.

Text You can add text paragraphs.

Image You can add multiple images to each interaction item.

Flash You can add Flash movies to each paragraph.

Video You can add video files to each interaction item.

Moving Text Paragraphs You can move paragraphs by dragging their handles (the leftmost part of the pane with three vertical dots).

Adding Text Box

3. Now you can click inside the text box and type text.

Arranging Objects

Objects on a page can overlap each other. In this case you can arrange how they are stacked by sending them backward or forward. To do that:

1. Select an object (text box or image) on a page. 2. On the toolbar, click the Arrange button.

3. Choose one of the four available actions from the drop-down menu:

o Bring to Front o Send to Back o Bring Forward o Send Backward

You can select multiple objects on a page (text boxes and images) and modify all selected objects at once. You have the option to change text formatting properties, move, resize, and delete all selected objects. Parent topic: 3D Book 3.4.4. Layout and Design A new book will always be created using the standard portrait layout. But you can always change the size of pages in your book.

Changing Page Size Choose one of the predefined page sizes from the Page Size drop-down menu:

• Standard Portrait • Wide Portrait • Square • Standard Landscape

This will change the size of all pages in your book. You can also customize the look of pages in your book. Each page can be customized separately.

Applying Background Picture to Pages

1. Click a page to select it. 2. Click the Page Backgrounds button on the toolbar. 3. Choose a background from the drop-down menu.

It’s also possible to apply color to page backgrounds. If you already added a picture background, the fill color will change the tint of the applied image.

Filling Page with Color

1. Click a page to select it. 2. Select the Use Color Fill checkbox. 3. Click the Fill Color button.

Parent topic: 3D Book 3.4.5. Zooming Pages There are two options to adjust the size of the book in the editor. In the View tab you can choose one of the two options: Zoom to Fit or 100%.

To fit the broadside to the size of the current window, click the Zoom to Fit button on the toolbar. 100% will zoom the book to 100% of the default size. The default size of the page can be found in the Publish window –> Flash Movie Properties -> Page size. The current zoom level will be shown in the right bottom corner of the editor. You can enlarge or reduce a page to any size allowed – within the range of the minimum and maximum zoom levels. To show the grid, select the Show Grid option on the product ribbon.

To show guides, select the Show Guides option on the product ribbon.

Note: you can also drag the guides to place them where you need them.

Snapping to Guides

The Grids and Guides tool helps to precise the alignment. With Guides enabled, text boxes and imported images will fit inside the space between the guides. If you use guides to align objects on page, you may want to make objects snap to guides. To enable snapping, select the Snap to Guides checkbox on the toolbar. 3. Specify a publish location. 4. Type a name for your output Flash movie in the File name field. 5. Select the Generate HTML checkbox, if you want to generate a sample html page

with your interaction embedded into it. 6. Specify Flash movie properties.

Auto size When this option is disabled, the output Flash movie and its player will be scaled to the window size. When enabled, the Flash player will be resized to the window, preserving the original size of its controls.

Frame rate

This option specifies the frequency at which frames are produced.

7. Click the Publish button. Your interaction will be converted to Flash. Now you can take a look at the sample html code to see how to embed your new interaction to your web site.

Compression Options The Compression tab allows you to configure compression settings for your interaction. The lower the quality of images and audio/video objects, the smaller the size of your resulting Flash file.

iSpring Kinetics offers two preset compression modes that optimize a Flash movie for the web with low or high connection speed. You can also create up to ten custom compression presets according to your needs.

Image Compression

If you choose "Smart compression" mode, all images will be saved, keeping their high quality and small size. Read more about Smart compression in the iSpring blog. Lossy compression will convert and save all embedded images to .jpg format. Lossless compression converts all images in your interaction with the highest quality.

Audio Compression

Audio compression

Audio bitrate value is set to 96 kbit/s by default. You can manually change audio bitrate and publish audio with lower or higher quality according to your needs. Changing bitrate will affect the output file size.

Video Compression

Video compression

You can choose one of the video quality presets offered by iSpring Kinetics. Setting higher or lower preset options will affect the output file size and video quality. To find accurate stream resolutions and corresponding bitrates, please check the Video Quality Table.
