[isolated] connectionsOur exhibition title this year is about contrasting concepts and a play on feelings that have come out of the last year.

The pandemic has left us feeling isolated and reaching out for connection, but in turn we’ve been brought together and united by that in the classroom. Connections have been more meaningful because of the anticipation that things can change in a seconds notice.

As Year 12 teachers we are proud of the resilience and determination our students have displayed and wish them all the best in their futures.

I planned to create a narrative story about the human condition which includes love, loss, anger and ennui. To do this I used my younger cousin as my main subject and my family to recreate these emotions. Creating this series of photographs that represent the human condition has helped me gain more knowledge of combining multiple images into one which is shown within the emotion of loss and improve on my photoshop skills.

Disney movies are films that are usually introduced at a young age. These films shape early stereotypes into young minds and educate children on their place in society based on the characters. For my artwork, I have decided to show how Disney films have influenced the way we see our world, the stereotypes and messages that were exposed to us when we were younger and the ways in which this can shape our identities.

I have been interested in music for a long time and for the first time at the start of this year, I decided to try and create my own music with different effects, techniques, and instruments to create melodies. I make the kind of melancholic music with slow soft instruments, but it was only recently that I started to develop my own style of music. I am sure it still has much more development ahead.

For my artwork, I chose to experiment with filming, particularly with a Go Pro. The themes for my work were to ‘live in the moment’ and to live your life to the fullest. I think that so many people get caught up in the complications of everyday life and overthink too much! It’s good to step back and look at how beautiful our beaches and parks are or enjoy the vibe of the city buzzing with life. I love putting together simple videos which capture the moments of adrenaline and happiness with family and friends.

My abstract portraits consist of vibrant and flamboyant colours that emphasize on the use of unique and unusual features of the face. To achieve this aesthetic, I investigated the work of other abstract painters, such as Kandinsky as well as experimenting with a wide range of mediums and techniques.

Tiarna has utilised her role as a dancer in the Ensemble cast during the College Musical’s production of Catch Me If You Can. In her products she has explored her role not only as part of a collective but also as an individual and the way that impacted her style of dance.

The created space is effective for the specific company, and truly highlights my strengths when it comes to interior design; being able to create a welcoming environment. I decided to work with another strength of mine being the ability to include nature within my designs as it provided myself with the best opportunity of creating a design to my fullest potential. I also decided to incorporate this strength due to the connection made to The Body Shop, which is another designer that I was influenced by. A specific weakness I came upon was making the final pitch seem realistic due to my lack of ability in the use of specific technology.

For my work I merely wanted to create pieces in celebration of body and of womanhood, I wanted her to be fun and bouncy and for the audience to try and see some of that joy and celebration as well. I wanted this to exist as an exploration of love and appreciation to other women, based on exaggeration of being proud of that. The mushroom is a representation of womanhood and the way we grow, the sate of life that we all live is different then some gorgeous rose or other flower, I wanted to be less traditional and unconventional, as is her body and the way she represents herself.

Sophia Bitter(Visual Arts - Art)

My work explores the feeling and emotion of indulging in the comfort of death. It depicts the mixture of guilt and consideration of accepting death as a good thing, in some circumstances. I like the contrast between mediums and colour and how that symbolises death lingering. Contrasting the background from white to black really helped the colours become quite vibrant, which is an ironic way to represent immortality .

When observing the artwork, I find that straight away thelight will have different looks on the bark texture. The lighter texture on copper which is shown in the final photos they are both copper. I went with the flow and some otherjewellery designs for inspiration that based their pieces onnatural elements. I practiced different techniques oftexturing with different tools to see if I could get a differentfinish compared to others.

‘untitled’ is about combining portraiture and floral together to celebrate beauty. Beauty of portraiture is with humans, when getting up close and personal. Beauty of Floral is with nature and growth. Together in ‘untitled’ they create the beauty of expression.

For my product I created to characters that would serve as a protagonist and antagonist in a fantasy world video game. I wanted to create two unconvential characters that would insight interest and would be diverse from other characters within that genre. I used shape language and colour theory to increase appeal in my designs and tie into tropes relating to fantasy protagonists and antagonists. I am fairly happy with how they have turned out, although I am disappointed that I ran out of time to draw any action shots of the two characters.

Nature photography is an art that is devoted to displaying natural elements, closeups of scenes and textures, all which can be interpreted differently. My passion for nature photography has influenced me when capturing these unique macro photographs which have stark contrasts. The colour elements are what allures the eye to the focal point while the composition highlights the photographs meaning and purpose.

I was interested in the environment and drew inspiration from the coral reef. I sculpted a female figure with coral forming from the back of her head around to her opposite towards the waist. By using different colors and textures of coral, I could define different species of coral but also make the forms stand out against the white body. Once I kept adding more pieces until it finally came together. Overall, although it was a challenge, it was the most enjoyable challenge to achieve.

Sabrina Costa(Visual Arts - Design)My starting points and influences for my design was part of my interest in logos and brand identity. I originally thought of the idea to design a logo for a photography company in which linked to my interior design folio for a photographic studio. After researching different ideas and brand identity, I developed the idea of creating a logo for a cosmetics company. As there are multiple cosmetics brands that are on the market today, it inspired me to create something that is accessible in shops, which is natural, ecofriendly, and vegan.

The photography I developed this year explored the various techniques on how to create vineyard photography through using, shutter speed and Marco. The purpose of this product is to allow the public to see a unique side of photography. The tools that were used for most of my experiments were a camera, animals, and scenic views. Throughout these experiments I used different camera lens and angles, and focused on developing creative images.

I have decided to initiate my investigation on the process of how weapon concept art is portrayed, and how this can be utilized in such forms of entertainment such as videogames, cinema, and television shows. This has been a demonstration of how artists can use stories to add detail and information to a weapon as well as how the concept art itself is shown both in the original designs and through the form of entertainment it is used for. The skills and information gained will help with the overall understanding of the importance and use of concept art in every aspect.

For my final piece I decided to paint a tribute for my dog who passed away while I was doing this folio. This artwork’s theme was the love you feel for a pet or even the familial love that comes with having an animal apart of your family for a long time. I also tried to communicate that love is apart of grief, because I believe you cannot grieve something or someone that you did not love.

These pieces were inspired by my growing concern for the health of our marine wildlife and they’re ecosystems. I express the original theoretical trauma of being manipulated and aim to raise awareness of our oceans fragile state. The pieces emphasise that the true beauty of our ocean and its inhabitants are perishing, becoming a framed relic rather than majestic environmental presence’s. The three sculptures are in the form of lungs that interconnect to emphasise the final breath of the ocean inhabitant’s, symbolising suffocation. The gruesome lung in appearance alludes to the real-sheep lungs that were used as a casting. The sculptures are versions of being a carcass, to emphasise the slaughter as a reminder these natural sources power is diminished.

My primary inspiration to design this came from not only my passion for fashion, but also my VOGUE magazines. Chanel was another inspiration for the thought process of this topic as I have always admired their advertisements, especially their perfume ones. Later when I came across Virgil Abloh’s design for Beyonce’s tour it really finalised the idea that I wanted to creat something to sell something else. So, combining those ideas I took on th challenge of designing both a dress and the final advert. Further analysis into Abloh’s work confirmed my suspicions and led me to create a product that would connect to other products within a design.

Ella Liddy(Visual Arts - Art)In order to in cooperate all of my ideas on colour contrasting, and how I am inspired by artists such as vogue and Gucci, for my final piece, it was decided that a video would be created. This would be perfect in portraying my views and opinions on unconventional beauty, not only in the real world, but also how it is portrayed through fashion and art in order to challenge our society’s views on beauty today.

Science is one of the most mysterious, researched, and answered aspects of life. When humanity dies, and we are no longer here anymore, either through disease, extinction, or natural causes, the stems of science is something that will live on for infinity. Science, and all of its flaws, is the one thing that humanity cannot grasp the answers to- although we like to think we know it all. The cure for cancer, a dose of a drug to fix the diabetic, or a medicine to bring back the memory of people suffering with Alzheimer’s, is something that I may not see in my lifetime- but are all things I dearly hope will be breakthroughs in science in the near future.

My final images were taken in a dark room with a black backdrop. The lighting source as stated was a candle which references Bill Henson’s photographic style. I followed my storyboard of poses which I completed and I am extremely happy with these effective results. Throughout this investigation I have developed so much as a makeup artist, I applied these techniques and ideas that I learned to my final artwork. The symbolic meaning behind these images is to portray the devil as both horrific and intriguing, drawing on Gothic aesthetics.

Rutendo Maringa(Visual Arts - Art)My “Talk to the hand” piece explores the unspoken language of emotions and how the body parts are active articulators and express communication. The hand is able to beckon and invite as well as being able to silence and instruct. In my daily interactions with others, I subconsciously use my hands to better convey what I am trying to say. In a way I began to conceptualise how the gestures I direct my hands to perform when I talk is ultimately an alternate means of communicate without my mouth and I wondered how many people realised this.

With its glistening and dripping spray paint splotches, disordered pastel lines, layered bold acrylic paints and fine pop-details – this piece comes to life and encapsulates the viewers attention. When deeply analysing the piece it represents the past year through its pop-cultural influences specifically those that influenced the nation and me. This includes the past years positives and negatives such as the virus COVID-19 and the hit TV show ‘Squid Game.’ However, despite the former the work is ultimately left up to viewer interpretation.

This chosen product is part of my practical skills folder, displaying the Sydney Harbour Bridge projected onto a textured surface. The skills in which I had investigated throughout the investigation focus on the various surfaces that can be projected onto, where both camera angle and lighting are separate skills that interrelate to the effectiveness of the projection on each surface. Through the development of skills within the area of projection, a unique artwork was able to be created.

I have developed a series of sculptures that incorporated Monster cans with bright coloured clay that references the anatomy of different animals. After experimenting with the different techniques and styles, I created a body of work around the theme of the monster.

My design brief required me to develop a logo for a new AFL team that would be based out of the Northern Territory.

I began by researching logos that would influence my design. From there I was able to identify some common visual features such as shape, colour, text and placement. I then researched references to the Northern Territory to get a feel for the area and get a feel for what I wanted for the design.

This piece of artwork is very precious to me since it reflects my sentiments so clearly, although these feelings may not be so easily stated to the human eye. This artwork can only be really appreciated by those who can allow their imaginations to run wild, since interpretation is left up to the beholder. This painting tells the narrative of a zebra trapped around broken hooves and legs, with the dark ensemble of colour reds behind it. This piece indicates some form of struggle and tragedy.

Anastasia Mitchell(Visual Arts - Design)

I chose to create a magazine design as I have previously enjoyed creating magazines for assignments. I started off by creating a realistic and appropriate design that included lots of challenges and opportunities. I believe I met the design brief as my final design was unique and appealing. I used many eye catching and different images to help make it appealing to a larger variety of people. the magazine logo is clear and so is the magazines title. I ensured that all required text was included in the design and that it was easily readable.

Georgina Mollet(Creative Arts)The creative concert portraiture I have produced are currently my most favorited images I have ever taken as all of the manipulations I have created within the images brings out a new life to just a basic point and shoot concert portrait. I have learned how to use the liquify tool while creating these series of images as I never knew how to use it in the specific ‘distortion line’ way that was produced. I also had never tried shooting on completely manual camera settings while at a music gig before I had the opportunity to shoot TOWNS’s tour last month.

I have created a vinyl for Post Malone’s single called ‘Wow’ , this would include the album cover, the back of the cover, the inner sleeve’s which then include the vinyl record. The influence for the design is Post Malone himself because he has a specific style and genre as most artists do and his album covers have always stood out to me as it always has cool and edgy graphics that link to his album or one of the songs within it.

My conceptual development for my art piece revolves around the symbolism of the spiral shape. This symbolism intrigued and influenced my artwork. I wanted to create a rainbow mosaic which would reflect upon my personal experiences about my sexuality and gender identity. The unique thing about mosaics is that they are composed of a vast variety of materials. These materials can range from being natural objects like stone, leaves and shells, to recycled objects like paper, bottle caps, to other materials like coloured tiles, ceramic tesserae, stained glass, beads, buttons, and much more.

My starting idea originated from being influenced by popular skateboard and fashion brands such as General Pants Co and Vans. Both these brands display a certain edge that appeals to teenage audiences as well as adults. I wanted to uncover why this is by creating my own clothing brand that shares similar aspects with these brands but ultimately be a strong competitor within this harsh industry of fashion. I would do this by combining elements from the past such as 80s and 90s colours and slang with the modern world of fashion.

In creative arts I have worked to pursue my passion as an actress and singer through musical theatre. By performing in a lead role in the 2021 College Musical Catch Me If You Can, I have developed different acting techniques that have helped me to grow exponentially as an actress. My role as Carol Strong allowed me to continue to pursue my passions and develop as an artist, inspiring me to become a more fluent and driven musical theatre practitioner.

Mitchel Payne(Creative Arts - Modified)

Mitchel has spent his year in Creative Arts building upon photography skills that he starte exploring in Semester Two of Year 11.

Beginning the year by exploring some of the camera’s functions and photography techniques in-depth, Mitch was soon able to apply his skills to a whole range of photography products. These included visual organisers, promotional products as well as creating visual narratives.

Throughout the process of making my pieces Qimmy Shimmy was my main inspiration. I enjoyed using the idea of unrealistic art as it is abnormal to society yet exciting to the viewers as it creates a sense of imagination. I faced many difficulties such as making the moulds, painting the babies, finding the correct equipment and making the pieces without damaging them as they where very delicate. I think of my art to be creative and unique by using normal everyday things such as food and using that the create pieces that people don’t see in their everyday life.

My work is a 3 series titled ‘処女’. ‘処女’ which is the Japanese word for young girl, however, also the word for virgin. The first work is called ‘串刺し’, which means impaled. In ‘串刺し’ I chose to use death by impalement as it creates an ambiguity. What is meant by this is that through being impaled, the death is not quick and sudden. This second piece is titled 内臓除去, which means gutted, literally translated to ‘removal of internal organs’. As the name suggests, Nozomi is shown with her entrails pouring out. The final piece to the 3-part series is titled ‘腐った’, meaning rotten. Standing closely to ‘内臓除去’ in terms of the gore, Nozomi’s body turns grey as a zombie-like infection deteriorates her flesh. Slugs cover her body, leaving toxic, slimy trail behind them.

Sarah Pettina(Visual Arts - Design)To begin my folio, I analysed promotional costumes designed for previous companions and noted how they demonstrated their characteristics and backstory through different design techniques such as layering, symmetry and complimentary colours. I was heavily influenced by urban photography and hoped to incorporate a rugged practicality into the design, which would contrast against the more refined sophistication of The Doctor. My design has perfectly met the confines of the design brief as I designed it to fit with the limitations and constraints, while expanding on the characters style and requirements put forward by the client.

When beginning the design process for this project. I looked at other 3D artists who were widely experienced using Blender. Examples of these artists are those such as Ian Hubert and Andrew Price. Both professional VFX artists who are commonly remembered by their incredible work with Blender. Although the modelling designs and texturing inspiration wasn’t directly taken from Price himself, the skills and techniques taught by him on ways in which you can do things quickly and effectively using Blender, allowed for my own project to have somewhat of a guide in the right direction.

My work heavily works with vampiric or horror elements as I like to apply these themes to cause the audience to feel unsafe but interested at the same time. This photo identifies gothic and horrific themes as a way to represent the unidentified in life. I used photoshop to be able to present a spooky atmosphere. I originally used the green screen room and masks over the faces of the people in the photograph. The teddy in the photograph has a distorted face made from clay to convey horrific themes through gore, spider like eyes and more. The face swap of the bear represents the trauma projection comforting items go through when faced by a scary event.

The duplication of a simple section of a corridor, ultimately allowed for a clean and hospital-like appearance. The textures were that of simple colours and metallic/ roughness properties. The reflections shown against the metal surfaces from the lighting on both the floor and the ceiling, allow for viewers to be struck with a bit more visual interest. In comparison to what the corridor would look like without the lighting in question.

I have explored singing and songwriting this year. My music is inspired by the theme of relationships and the emotional turmoil surrounding them. The songs I have made are both personal and inspired by other people’s music as these songs have always drawn me in as if I’m immersing myself into scenarios I’ve never experienced. In little white text on the cover art spells “Tenber” a representation of my birthday, the tenth of October. Because most of my songs are about coming of age.

Nathan has utilised his lead role as Frank Abagnale Jnr. in the College Musical’s production of Catch Me If You Can. In his products he has chosen to focus on a musical number and the following scene, both of which are emotionally charged and required him to extend his acting skills to a place that many actors struggle to connect.

Holly Selway(Visual Arts - Design)

I drew inspiration for my necromancer sword from Pedro H. Miranda in particular as they designed a bone sword. They also created a rose and thorn cutlass that helped me develop my ideas of an asymmetrical sword. The wide guard over the grip inspired me to combine the ideas and used bones (specifically horns) to create a guard for my sword. Moniek Schilder gave me the idea of doing an electricity-based sword but the styles we displayed were wildly different. Schilder drew regular swords and gave them electrical features whereas I wanted the shape of the sword’s blade to reflect the theme.

My body of work titled ‘Transit of life’ consists of a polymer clay sculpture, 5 framed photographs and an edited video. The motif in my work is flowers, as they symbolise new beginnings and well depict the fleetingness of moments. My year 12 experience has been especially hard on my mental health and has forced me to consider life in a different way. By acknowledging that my rough patch will pass, I was enlightened to the fluidity of life; from one life to another, we are all existing within a state of simply being, and there is beauty in simply existing.

The purpose and meaning of this product are to understand the pain endometriosis brings to females. Overall, this product was a success as the aim was met, due to the detail and depth in artwork it created a realist affect on the overall product. The body shapes are all different to represent how it can affect all kinds of women, the placement of the women also represent how women want to escape the pain and suffering women experience.

Macy Stoneman(Creative Arts)

Abstract art does not aim to represent any depiction of visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect.

My love of colour influenced me when making these works. How they flow and blend together to make something unique inspires me when painting. Every composition’s meaning is up for interpretation as they are meant to represent something different.

For my second Practical, my main task is to design two female DLC characters for Cyberpunk 2077, a large PC action game from CD Projekt Games. In the beginning, in order to follow the original design style of the game, I collected and analysed a number of characters designed by both Marcin Blaszczak, the original character designer, and Sergi Brosa, a character designer with a similar style. These character designs inspired me in terms of body shape, costume, texture and colour palette, as well as my own collection of reference images of Catwoman and Magician.

Paradise’ is about finding joy in situations where it does not necessarily need to be there. People are often looking towards the next big thing and losing focus on the present by saying “I will be happy when I have more money” or thinking they will find happiness when they start dating someone, etc, but realistically when you continue to push back the date on happiness, you will find that you experienced great things throughout your life and never had the time to appreciate them.

Samantha Wormald(Creative Arts)As part of my commitment to College Musical, in cooperation with my passion for dance, I have used these experiences to produce my final product. Trinity College’s 2021 whole college musical ‘Catch Me If You Can’ provided me with the opportunity to continue to develop my skills as a musical theatre performer, and specially as a dancer. Taking on the role of dance captain for this production has also contributed to the making of my final product and these skills will support me as I make my way into the professional musical theatre and film industry.
