Welcome to ISO 19100!Welcome to ISO 19100!

• A suite of 35+ standards prepared by ISO Technical Committee 211 (TC211) on Geographic Information and Geomatics

• Geographic information is increasing in complexity, diversity, volume and availability, and has more “non-geographic” users accessing it.

• ISO 19100 meant to standardize all aspects of geographic information

International Effort, International Effort, Global AudienceGlobal Audience

• ISO 19100 is being developed by Technical Committee 211 (TC 211). The membership of TC 211 is international.

• The success of ISO 19100 depends upon a broad acceptance of its standards by government, industry and communities the world over.

ISO 19115 - MetadataISO 19115 - Metadata

• ISO 19115 defines a general purpose metadata model that can be used to describe geographic data and services.

• It is now in the DIS stage of the standard process. Final editorial comments on the document have been received by TC211 and will be addressed at plenary meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, next month.

• ISO 19115 is expected to attain IS status in the summer of 2002. This will close over five years of work on this standard by TC 211.

• Once available as an IS, ISO 19115 will be ready to be adopted/adapted by interested bodies such as the Government of Canada

Canadian Adaptation of 19115Canadian Adaptation of 19115

• Profiling a standard defines a (minimum or more) set needed for use by a particular community, e.g. remote sensing community.

• ISO 19115 is being profiled by the Government of Canada. This will provide a minimum (or core) metadata required to enable discovery, evaluation and access to geographic information.

North American Adaptation of North American Adaptation of ISO 19115ISO 19115

• Canada and the United States are working together to produce a common profile of ISO 19115

• This will ensure interoperabililty between nations and the enterprises within.

• Mexico is as yet not involved in profile work, but their languages and other requirements are being considered.

ISO Requirements for ProfilingISO Requirements for Profiling

• ISO DIS 19106, another member of the 19100 Geographic Information / Geomatics suite, lays out rules for creating profiles.

• ISO DIS 19115 lays out further rules by stating what elements must be contained within any profile of itself. These elements (there are 22 of them) are known as the ISO 19115 core metadata.

Canadian Requirements for Canadian Requirements for ProfileProfile

• Define a core metadata set within a comprehensive metadata set.

• Comply with other standards to promote interoperability and maintain value of legacy metadata.

• Lay a foundation to support future innovations.• Support cultural and linguistic adaptability

requirements.

Defining a Core MetadataDefining a Core Metadata

• Met requirement from 19106 and subclause 6.5 of 19115.

• Who, What, When, Where?• Identified and added elements critical for

database administration purposes (DAP) and cultural and linguistic adaptability (CLA).

• Identified and added elements critical for discovery, evaluation and access.
