Leadership Isle of Wight Preparing for Class of 2015

Leadership Isle of Wight is now accepting nominations for its Class of 2015. Leadership Isle of Wight was created in 1999 to develop informed, responsible and effective community leaders. The program provides hands-on experience in dynamic lead-ership skills, and delves into issues facing the county. Ideal candidates are,

• highly motivated potential community leaders, • committed to community or public service, • willing and able to devote one day per month to the program, scheduled for

January through October. To nominate a candidate for Leadership Isle of Wight, or to download an applica-tion to participate in the Class of 2015, visit the chamber’s website at www.theisle.org, and click on the Leadership tab, or contact the chamber of com-merce at (757) 357-3502 or [email protected].

Student Leadership Institute Underway The Chamber has re-launched its Student Leadership Institute as an annual pro-gram for high school juniors. The 2014-15 program began in September and runs through April. The students learn about team building, utilizing resources, building self confi-dence and making a difference in their communities. An ethics component is built into each class. The program is privately funded through sponsorships to offset the bulk of its expenses, and students pay only a nominal participation fee. Students are participating from Smithfield High School, Windsor High School, Isle of Wight Academy, and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, as well as one home-schooled student. Martha Russ co-chairs this initiative with Rebecca Mercer. Facilitators for 2014-15 are Mary Margaret Wells and Judy Winslow. The Student Leadership Institute is sponsored by Smithfield Foods, Dhamu & Kanchana Thamodaran, the Town of Smithfield, Farmers Bank, and Judy Be-glund. “The Student Leadership Institute taught me valuable skills; such as cooperation, understanding, and dedication that I am able to use, not only for my current leader-ship positions, but also for my future endeavors." - Jenny Saunders (Student Leader-ship 2003)

Member Spotlight Windsor Hardware & Supply Co. 5 Joyner Avenue, Windsor (757) 242-6123

Windsor is a close-knit rural community, where multiple generations stay together, and shop-keepers know their customers by name. The folks at Windsor Hardware & Supply Company are a good example of that.

Opened in 2002 by Tammy and David Ed-wards, Windsor Hardware has woven itself into the fabric of the community, with a business ethic based on trust and respect for customers and employees.

That ethic shows in their caring customer ser-vice and great selection. With the nationwide buying power of True Value, they can offer prices that compare with big box stores, while offering the personal at-tention you get only at a family-owned business, rooted in the community.

Windsor Hardware is a valued member of the chamber of commerce, and re-cently volunteered their help in decorating for the chamber's Isle Fest celebration.

As the holiday season approaches, Windsor Hardware is preparing for its huge Christmas display. Its Christmas open house on the first Sunday in December is a treasured community event.

The Isle of Wight-Smithfield-Windsor Chamber of Commerce is proud to serve and promote businesses like Windsor Hardware. To learn how your business can be featured in the Member Spotlight, contact the chamber at (757) 357-3502.
