Islamic geometric designs are beautiful to view and exciting and challenging to color and create. In theseactivities, students will build and reinforce decimal skills while coloring an Islamic geometric design. First students solve math problems and then they follow a key to color the designs. For an extra challenge,students will follow step-by-step directions and create the Islamic design on an isometric grid.
Learning Objectives:
1. Students �nd the sum of decimals.2. Students create an Islamic design on an isometric grid.
Lessons:
There are two activities in this lesson.
1. Solve and Color Supplies: Hexagons and Stars worksheet, colored pencils or crayons Students complete math problems (adding decimals), then color the shapes in the Islamic design based on the answers. Tell students to solve all of the problems �rst before coloring the design.
2. Your TurnSupplies: Create a Design worksheet, Your Turn! worksheet, pencil, eraser, ruler, colored pencils
Students will create the Islamic design on the Your Turn! worksheet by following simple, step-by-step directions on the Create a Design worksheet. Encourage students to color their �nal designsand share them with their classmates. It is interesting to see how both color placement and color choicedrammatically change the appearance.

Solve the problems.If the sum is between 0 and 10, color the shape brown.If the sum is between 11 and 20, color the shape black.If the sum is between 21 and 30, color the shape orange.If the sum is between 31 and 50, color the shape green.Color the remaining shapes as indicated.
Follow the directions on page 3, and create the hexagon and star design on the isometric grid below. You will need a pencil, eraser and ruler to create the design, and colored pencils to make them dazzling. Enjoy!
