International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry 2016 Newsletter December 2016 Message from the President As the current president of the ISHC, it is my pleasure to inform you about past and current developments and activities of our society. I am indebted to the members of the executive committee of ISHC and editors of Progress of Heterocyclic Chemistry who are responsible for several exciting developments that will allow us to communicate between members of ISHC and learn about their activities more efficiently. The 26 th ISHC Congress will be held in Regensburg, Germany September 3-8, 2017 The University of Regensburg will host the 26 th ISHC Congress. Online registration and booking of accommodation is now open. All the details can be found at the ISHC website or directly via http://www-oc.chemie.uni-regensburg.de/ISHC2017. With registration rates starting at 150 EUR for students and postdocs and 325 EUR for regular participants (super early bird special, good until February 28, 2017), we hope to welcome you all in Regensburg. Besides great science both from academic and industrial speakers (slots for oral and flash poster presentations are available), Regensburg offers great sightseeing, being named a UNESCO World heritage site for its spectacular old city as well as for its nearby monuments Walhalla and Hall of Liberation that were built by Ludwig I. Spend an extra few days to visit the famous palaces and castles such as Herrenchiemsee or Neuschwanstein build by Ludwig II (and not by Walt Disney…). Regensburg can be conveniently reached from various international airports in Munich (1 h; train, bus or shuttle), Frankfurt (3 h, direct train) or Vienna (3 h, direct train) and is connected to the German high speed railway system.

ISHC Awards – Call for Nominations Nominations for junior, senior and industrial awards for the 2017 Congress must be submitted to the secretary ([email protected]) by Jan 1st. 2017 with the subject line “Award Nomination Materials”. For more information regarding nomination procedures, please see http://ishc-web.org under “awards”.

New ISHC Website ishc-web.org Thanks to David Williams, the ISHC Website has found a new home at Indiana University. The new design of the Website does not only look great, but provides valuable information on all aspects of the Society. Amongst others, you will find the Newsletters, Bulletins, teaching material and summaries of previous ISHC conferences there. Of course, a membership form can be downloaded from there as well: Please recommend to your colleagues to join ISHC, at 35 USD/year it is a bargain but greatly helps us to promote Heterocylic Chemistry.

ISHC Bulletin David Williams has started a fantastic monthly bulletin, featuring latest publications by our ISHC members. Everyone can contribute by sending to him an abstract on their recently published papers. You should receive the Bulletin via a monthly email (if not please let us know), and you can also download it from the ISHC Website.

ISHC Lectures In 2016, the Society instituted ISHC Lectures at selected conferences around the world. A Society member who is a speaker at an international conference on heterocyclic chemistry is chosen and sponsored as the ISHC Lecturer. The first ISHC Lecture was given by Geraldine Masson (CNRS, Gif sur Yvette) at the 27th European Colloquium on Heterocyclic Chemistry on July 5, 2016, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Progress of Heterocyclic Chemistry – New Contract with Elsevier As part of the benefits being a member of ISHC, you have online access to the annual volume of Progress of Heterocyclic Chemistry (PHC). I am very excited that a new contract with Elsevier has been signed that will ensure the future of PHC. Moreover, Gordon W. Gribble and John Joule have agreed to stay on as Volume editors, which will ensure the high quality of this review publication.

Special J. Org. Chem. Issue on Heterocyclic Chemistry The ISHC and The Journal of Organic Chemistry have worked together to publish a special issue of JOC on heterocyclic chemistry. It has appeared in Issue #21 on November 4, 2016. Of the 50 papers in the special issue, 29 have authors who are members of the ISHC. Thanks to the efforts of our former ISHC president Daniel Comins this special issue was made possible, which impressively demonstrates the creativity and versatility for heterocyclic chemistry.

Special Synlett Issue on Heterocyclic Chemistry to appear in September 2017

Benjamin List, Editor in Chief of Synlett and a Plenary Lecturer at ISHC 26 has will team up with Oliver Reiser (Guest editor) to publish a special issue on heterocyclic chemistry. We are calling for manuscripts now, deadline for submission will be March 1, 2017. If you are interested in contributing, please write an email to [email protected]. Thieme, the publisher of Synlett has been a strong supporter of the ISHC over many years, amongst others they offer ISHC members a 15% discount on Thieme Chemistry titles.
