Winter Edition

NO, the printer of iShares did not

make a mistake and we do have 2

cover pages. We simply could not

make up our mind on which one

of them we liked most, so we de-

cided to offer you both of them.

Freezing temperatures while writing this edi-

torial, but since we probably won’t get a Whi-

te X-Mas, what better way for our readers

than this magazine to bring the joy of Christ-

mas into your hearts. From our lovely excursi-

on to Frankfurt, the Rockettes, Caminito and

even an African safari, we hope you will find

this final issue of the year one that’s well

worth reading. The only thing that’s missing is

your contribution but we’re confident that

with every issue we’ll get a least enough con-

tributions to keep us going.

We know we’ve said it before but please don’t be shy in 2014 and grab your pen to

write us something, anything really, you would like to share. For the New Year we

wish you a lot of joy, happiness, love and whatever your heart may desire. You may

now flip this page and discover what we have in store for you.

Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2014 to all our readers. We might even be back

next year, together with the Easter bunny,

it all depends on YOU.

Buenos Aires By the time you’re reading this edition, our EWR-EZE flight (the one I took 4 times) is no

longer operating, but UA can still get you there. After having spent some time in the EZE

office last time and as promised, the South American story continues. This time we’ll tell

you something more about a part of Buenos Aires you might want to visit:

Caminito ‘Camino means ‘way’ and the ‘ito’ tagged

onto it makes it small, so best translation

would be ‘little way’, ‘little road’. True, this

part of town is only about 100 metres long

but makes up for it’s shortness by its

splashing, vibrant colors. It’s situated in the

‘La Boca’ part of Buenos Aires, in a poor and

a little rundown area. Be careful and do not

wander around here at night, but during

daytime it’s pretty safe and they say that he-

re you will find the biggest concentration of

Japanese tourists per square meter. We

mostly encountered Americans and Ger-

mans, no Japanese spotted.

Between 1830 and 1930 more than 6

million (!) immigrants arrived in

Buenos Aires, more exactly at the La

Boca part, almost 50 percent origina-

ting from the Italian harbortown Ge-

noa. They brought along many tradi-

tions, one of them being that they

painted their houses with left-over

paint used in the harbor. They even

took it one step further and used old

wood and scrap metal from ships to

construct their houses. Most of the

houses do not exist anymore and the

whole Caminito area is more like an

exhibit, even the washing lines bet-

ween the houses are fake, but cer-

tainly represent how it must have

been those days.

While strolling here in ‘Caminito’ you’ll certainly hear a lot of tango music coming

out of the restaurants, or see it performed by musicians on the street. It was here

on the outdoor patios that the immigrants socialised together and the real tango

was born. Most of the houses here now sell every imaginable tango souvenir, most

undoubtedly all made in China. It is a very touristic area and sometimes even a little

tacky, but certainly a great place to take some nice colorful pictures, listen to some

tango while having a beer on a terrace and imagine how it must have been here

when the first immigrants had arrived. Beware of the typical touris traps: A female

tango dancer will put a hat on your head and invite you to dance with her, of course

the photos you will take will have to be paid for after the posing. Hope you will en-

joy some of the colorful pictures I took spread all over these pages dedicated to fas-

cinating Buenos Aires.

Poet ’s Corner For this end-of-the-year’s issue, we hope you will

enjoy this funny poem about the true meaning of

Christmas. Brought to you readers of this magazine

by a bunch of playful puppies. Enjoy!

Puppies' Christmas

author unknown

It's the day before Christmas And all through the house

The puppies are squeaking

An old rubber mouse.

The wreath which had merrily Hung on the door

Is scattered in pieces All over the floor.

The stockings that hung In a neat little row

Now boast a hole in Each one of the toes.

The tree was subjected To bright-eyed whims,

And now, although splendid, It's missing some limbs.

I catch them and hold them. "Be good", I insist.

They lick me, then run off To see what they've missed.

And now as I watch them The thought comes to me,

That their's is the spirit That Christmas should be.

Should children and puppies Yet show us the way, And teach us the joy

That should come with this day?

Could they bring the message That's written above,

And tell us that, most of all Christmas is love.

R o c k e t t e s

A few years ago, I had invited my sister

on a city trip to the Big Apple. We’ve

spent some wonderful days there but

one of the highlights certainly was the

fact that I had gotten tickets to go see

the Radio City Christmas Spectacular,

performed by the legendary Rockettes.

Page 20: Ishares3dec2013 pub

iShares

The show has been up and running

every X-Mas season since 1933 and so-

me of you might have seen it as well.

For those of our readers who haven’t, I

can highly recommend it. For this end-of

-the-ear’s issue of iShares, we’ve deci-

ded to tell you some more about the

Rockettes and the actual theater where

they perform. Actually, I had seen the

show for the first time in 1982, while be-

ing an exchange student in the US and

going on our senior High School year’s

excursion to New York. So long ago, it

was still in Black & White :). I really en-

joyed it so I was wondering if I would

still like it as much as I did way back

then:

I did! Ofcourse it has been adapted to

the 21st century since, they even make

you wear 3D glasses to accompany San-

ta on his flight over NYC. You might have

recognised me in the picture below.

Luckily, way back in 1982, I decided not

to apply for a job as a Rockette but re-

turn to Belgium instead, otherwise you

probably wouldn’t be reading this arti-

cle, now would you? By the time this

edition will finally reach its readers, it

will be too late to go see them, but

maybe next year you’ll get a chance and

give us your opinion in another iShares

magazine.

Some history about the Radio City Music Hall itself: Located inside Rockefeller Center,

its interior in Art Deco style was declared a city landmark in 1978. The actual Rockefel-

ler Center itself was built between 1929 and 1940 by developer John D. Rockefeller on

land leased from Columbia University. During X-Mas season, you can also admire the

giant Christmas tree and if you’re sporty enough even skate on the outdoor ice skate

rink. First opening to the public dates from 27Dec 1932 but the shows weren’t really

a success so later movies were shown. Currently the theater is leased to and managed

by the Madison Square Garden Company and even now, occasional movie premieres

still take place here, such as the Harry Potter film series. The Music Hall has presented

most of the leading pop and rock performers of the last 30 years, as well as televised

events including the Grammy Awards, the Tony Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards

etc. In 2013, the NBC summer reality talent show America’s got talent was featured on

stage for its live broadcasts for the 8th season of the show. As you already know now,

the X-Mas spectacular continues to be a very important annual event.

Page 22: Ishares3dec2013 pub

The Rockettes are a precision dance

company and have been dancing he-

re since 1932: don’t worry, we can

assure you all dancers have been re-

placed since then. They perform 5

shows a day, seven times a week.

This makes their performance one

of the most watched live shows with

more than 2 million viewers per

year. The first East Asian Rockette

joined the troup in 1985 and it

wasn’t until 1987 that the first dark-

skinned dancer got hired. For those

of you interested in a carreer switch:

Annual auditions are in the month

of April, so still enough time to plan

if you’d like to be a Rockette in 2014.

Page 23: Ishares3dec2013 pub

23

iShares

Most of the pictures here I took myself and as you can see, we had a very good

seat. The theater itself is built in a way you get a good view of the stage wherever

you are seated.

Some Christmas quotes

A good conscience

is a continual Christmas.

Benjamin Franklin

Happy, happy Christmas, that can

win us back to the delusions of our

man the pleasures of his youth,

and transport the traveler back to

his own fireside and quiet home!

Charles Dickens

What I don't like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.

Phyllis Diller

I stopped believing in Santa

Claus when I was six. Mother

took me to see him in a de-

partment store and he asked

for my autograph.

Shirley Temple

Unless we make Christmas an occasion to share our blessings, all the snow in Alas-ka won't make it 'white'.

Before giving the page to Mrs Livingstone, just a quick intro from the redaction: Safa-

ri comes from the Swahili and means ’Long Trip’. To prove you that you can experien-

ce a perfect safari in just three days, and at the same time take some very nice pictu-

res, Nancy will tell you all about her recent trip to beautiful Kenia. Take it away Nan-

cy, or to say it in Swahili as well:

There are certain things one must do in a life time: One of them is a safari. Well, the ti-me to realize that one thing presented itself to me when I received an invitation from my best friend to go to Kenya. I had read and heard a lot about Kenya , but nothing pre-pared me for the experience I was about to have..

After a small hitch on arrival at the make shift air-port in Nairobi, all went better than planned. May I remind you that just a few weeks before arriving in Nairobi, the airport was almost totally destroyed by a fire. The resilience of the Kenyan people was de-monstrated when they found a way to return to “normal” operations by building tents for immigra-tion, customs and baggage pickup, arrival and de-parture halls, tourist office, car rentals etc.

My flight arrived late in the evening so not much was to be discovered until the next day when day-light revealed a city full of vegetation, a big, or should I say an immense garden growing wildly wit-hout much maintenance or upkeep. Nairobi is a busy city with lots or high rise buildings but sadly the streets lack the finishing touch of a proper side-walk. Traffic is rather heavy and with the lack of proper public transport, you see lots and lots of people walking on the road sides, I think I have ne-ver seen so many people walking along the roads.

After a few of days in Nairobi, it was time to head

for the highlight of my journey to Kenya, the safa-

ri. We flew in a small 13 seater plane which to my

great surprise turned out to be a smooth ride. I

was terribly scared that the small plane was going

to shake and rattle but it did not. Instead, since it

cannot fly too high, you are able to enjoy the sce-

nery of this vast country.

The flight from Nairobi to the landing strip of Keekorok in the Masai Mara National Reserve took about one hour where, Joseph, our tour guide for the next 3 days was waiting for us in his Jeep. There, a charge of USD70 per night at the National Reserve had to be paid cash.

In the afternoon, off we went for our first safari outing. As Joseph said, you never know what you are going to spot. One thing is certain, not everyone gets to see the Big Fives: Leopard, Lyon, Elephant, Rhinoceros and Buffalo. I must say, my group and I were very lucky. We can say, thanks to Joseph’s expertise, we almost saw all fi-ve. That is, even though we did not see a leopard, we saw 3 cheetahs which accor-ding to Joseph it counts for one leopard.

To see the animals in the wild and in their natural habitat is an amazing experien-ce. No picture can do justice to the immensity and beauty of the savanna. Truly, It is something you must see and do in a life time.

A visit to one of the local tribes is a must, so we took a side tour to a Masai Villa-ge. The Masai tribe is famous for their tall, slender and even considered by some western women as very good looking men, this I think because of their fine facial fea-tures. The Masai tour guide indicated that eventhough they are christians, they practice poligamy. The father of our young tour guide had seven wives and 21 children. As it is their custom, the future husband must pay a dowery to the parents of the future bride consisting of 15 to 25 cows per bride. The Masai build their villa-ges in a circular fashion and their cows are very much part of their lives and sorrou-dings. Their diet consist of cow milk, blood and meat. Vegetables and fruits are ba-sically not a part of their diet.

Q: What did Mary Poppins want from Santa? A: Supercalifragilisticexpialisnowshoes! Contributed by: Jemima

A Russian couple was walking down the street in St. Petersburg the other

night, when the man felt a drop hit his nose. "I think it's raining," he said to his

wife. No, that felt more like snow to me," she replied. "No, I'm sure it was just

rain, he said." Well, as these things go, they were about to have a major ar-

gument about whether it was raining or snowing. Just then they saw a minor

communist party official walking toward them. "Let's not fight about it," the

man said, "let's ask Comrade Rudolph whether it's officially raining or

snowing." As the official approached, the man said, “Tell us, Comrade Ru-

dolph, is it officially raining or snowing?” "It's raining, of course," he answered

and walked on. But the woman insisted: "I know that felt like snow!" To which

the man quietly replied: "Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!"
