LCD Basics

Discovered in 1888 Replaced Cathode Ray Tubes

(CRT’s) More energy efficient than CRT Safe disposal (vs CRT or plasma) Typically a 16:9 flat panel display. Also used in many devices such

as: mobile devices, televisions, computer monitors, etc.

LCD Pro vs Con

Pro Relatively inexpensive Easily sourced Can be touchscreen

Con Not viewed as “special” Wide bezel gaps Locked into 16:9 aspect ratio Relatively few sizes available Limited maximum size

Projection Basics

Reflected light system Can be front or rear projection Simplest explanation:

Light is projected through a color wheel and then through a “chip”

Typically this “chip” is LCOS or DLP Passes through projection lens to

the wall or a screen

Projection Pro vs Con

Pro Least expensive option for very

large display area Easily sourced

Con Not ambient light tolerant Requires “throw” distance Expensive to maintain (blubs)

Video Walls Pro vs Con

Pro High resolution Great for “command center” Can be touchscreen

Con Relatively short lifespan Even “zero bezel” models

have black dividing lines RPU modules are heavy

LED Display Basics

Light Emitting Diode Brief History-

Original LED developed in 1927

First practical developed in the 60’s at G.E.

LCD vs LED

LCD Higher Resolution

Bezel Gaps

Some types are heavy

Difficult to calibrate and maintain

LED Resolution Dependent on

Pixel Pitch

No Bezels

Lightweight

Streamlined calibration and low-maintenance

Projection vs LED

Projection Lowest upfront cost

Requires light-controlled room, NO direct sunlight

Front Projection – Requires unimpeded light path to screen

Rear Projection – Requires “throw distance” behind screen

Lots of bulbs to replace!

LED Higher price point

Can out-perform ambient light

No space required behind display, or in front of display

Low maintenance – No bulbs to replace and a lifecycle of over 10 years with good technology

Video Walls vs LED

Video Walls Heavy

Thick and bulky

Visible gaps between units

Complications with uniformity between units – especially in aging models

LED Lightweight

Thin

No bezels or gaps

A display of any size is one unit, meaning uniform image 100% of the time.
