Culture: Reality Television

• Celeb-reality: shows that follow the lives of celebrities or for the purpose of creating celebrities due to their lavish lifestyles.– E.g. The Real Housewives franchise• The women are not typically well known celebrities but

gain “fame” post-production of the series

Research

• During the 1980’s studies showed that viewers were hardly influenced at all by television

• In the 1990’s, Dr. Mark Harmon proved that with the change in programming also came a change in the affect it had on audiences

Research

• With the knowledge that television does in fact influence viewer behavior, Rebecca Glover and a few colleagues performed a survey focusing on children and adolescents

• Results: younger viewers perceive morals differently than adults– Because TV is so ubiquitous in the 21st century it

has the power to shape children's idea of what right and wrong are

Solution

• The Real Housewives franchise along with other celeb-reality shows should be mandated an additional behind the scenes episode showing all items and aspects of the show that were either given to the cast for free or constructed as part of production.

• In addition, every episode should begin with a disclaimer stating that some features are simulated or added for the purposes of the show.
