AskVCIs Global Warming caused by Mankind?Data table on next page, fieldwork Nov 1&2, 2011
AskVC asked just over 2000 people from the Vision Critical’s National Panel SpringboardUK “Is Global Warming caused by mankind/natural/not happening?”
The results for the total sample were :Mostly caused by mankind 33%Partly caused by mankind 40%Result of natural causes 14%Is not Happening 5%Don’t know 6%Other (specify) 1%
The official view of bodies such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is that most of the warming that we are currently seeing is the result of mankind’s actions. However, a large part of the media and a handful of experts have taken a different view, doubting the cause of the climate change or even its existence.
Amongst our sample 33% said they think climate change is mostly caused by mankind, the official view. In addition 40% said they felt it was partly caused by mankind. So, about 73% of the public said they were broadly in agreement with the official view. Over half of those who answered ‘other’ stated it was a mixture of mankind and natural causes.
5%, or one in twenty, said that climate change was not happening.
Interestingly, there were no strong differences in views amongst age, gender, or region, although those over 55 years old were more likely than others to say natural causes (20%).
