,NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Third Revision) which is identical with ISO 6621-3:2000 ‘Internal combustionengines — Piston rings — Part 3: Material specifications’ issued by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO) was adopted .by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of theAutomotive Primemovers Transmissions and Steering Systems and Internal Combustion Engines-Sectional Committee and approval of the Transport Engineering Division Council.
The Sectional Committee decided to align the Indian Standard with the corresponding InternationalStandard wherever feasible and wherever the domestic considerations were not so intense so as tohave standards different from the ISO Standards. This decision was taken with a view to upgrade thequality of the products in line with the International Standards.
This standard was first published in 1970 and subsequently revised in 1977 and then in 1986. The thirdrevision was undertaken due to revision of base standard. In this revision, the following technical changeshave been incorporated:
a) Table of Typical materials for piston rings had been modified.
b) Hardness in terms of Vickers, Rockwell and Brinell is given for respective materials.
c) Combinations of Typical modulus of elasticity and Bending strength is extended.
d) Typical applications for respective categories have been provided.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attentionis particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they shouldbe read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the currentpractice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
In this adopted standard, reference appears to the following International Standard for which IndianStandards also exist. The corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in its place aregiven below along with Iheir degree of equivalence for the editions indicated:

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the finalvalue, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordancewith IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant placesretained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES — PISTONRINGS — MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS
( Third Revision)
1 Scope
This part of 1S0 6621 classifies materials intended for the manufacture of piston rings, based on their mechanicalproperties and the stresses the materials are capable of withstanding.
This part of ISO 6621 is applicable to piston rings for reciprocating internal combustion engines up to and includingthose of 200 mm in diameter. It is also applicable to piston rings of compressors working under similar conditions.
2 Normative reference
The following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constittile ~rovi$lons ofthis part of ISO 6621. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these pl.d$iiationsdo not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this part of 1S0 6621 are encouraged tQ investigate thepossibility of applying the most recent edition of the normative document indicated below. For undated rSferen@s,the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and IEC maintain registers ofcurrently valid International Standards. .
ISO 6507-1, Metallicmaterials — Vickers hardness test — Part 1: Test method.
3 Mechanical properties
The choice of material made in accordance with the mechanical strength criteria given in Table 1 shall also takeinto account the final coating of rings, engine characteristics (rating, liner surface, etc.) and microstructural featuressuch as graphite, cementite and ferrite.

1 The hardness values are averages from three measurements on one ring, one being at the gap and the others 90” and 180° around frorrhe gap. HV30 hardnesstestingis in accordancewith ISO 6507-1. -HRB and HRC are given for reference only. The application of the?ardnaes measuring methods HRB and HRC is restricted, due to the geometry and the material of piston rings. The hardness values staterare used only for classifyhg.the materialsintothe individualsubclasses. Other hardness-measuringmethods and their equivalentvaluesshalw agreed between manufacturerand client.
All hardnass figures refer to the finishedpistonrings and segments. However, in the case of nitrided steel rings the given hardness figure:sppiyto the core hardness only.
‘ Hardness for expanders depends on-the manufacturingprocess. Values for finished pads shall be agreed between manufacturer antclient.
